Donning a precious keepsake dress made by her mother, ex-selfish-princess Mia throws open the doors to the ballroom and prepares to confront the swirling conspiracy threatening to swallow the whole of Sunkland. It is here that the Crown Prince Sion is prophesied to be fatally poisoned by his younger brother, Echard. The death of either brother would surely lead to ruin, so Mia needs a plan to avert disaster.
After considerable (by Mia standards) thought, she devises a brilliant (again, by Mia standards) scheme. It’s time for Operation Keep-Sion-Dancing-So-He-Never-Has-a-Chance-to-Drink-Anything! Unsurprisingly, her plan falls flat almost immediately, as the myriad factions and players in this game of power are hardly willing to sit idly by and allow her to interfere with their goals.
When she’s up against Sion’s burden of justice, Echard’s inferiority complex, AND Sunkland’s complex political background, can Mia lead everyone toward a better, brighter future?
Picking up right where we left off in the previous book, vol. 9 sees the continuation of Mia's quest to stop Sion from dying in his youth. The attempt on Sion's life itself already failed by the end of vol. 8, except it leads to an even bigger problem that not only involves Sunkland's royal family, but also Sunkland's upright principle of justice itself.
This ties all the way back to Mia's memories of her first life, including her regrets, bitterness, and also fond memories of her journey with Ludwig. Despite her still being the same old, selfish Mia on the inside, she has nothing but good intentions when dealing with the situation. This book also sees the conclusion of the love triangle involving Mia, Abel, and Sion. As we all know, Mia marries Abel in the future so Sion's love for her is fated to be doomed, but her response to his confession is just so sincere. It made me realize that Mia really has grown so much, because vol. 1 Mia would 100% be petty about this.
Since the love triangle is no more, the story opens up the path towards the question I've been wondering about for a while now. What happened to Sion and Tiona? We did see what the future had for them after Mia's death, but in the current timeline they've been mostly just friends because Sion is in love with Mia. Now that it's been resolved, it's finally time for Tiona to step in and fill in the role she was meant to play all along. It links nicely to Sion and Tiona's future, as well as showing glimpses of Esmeralda's marriage to Echard, and also Sion's relationship with Echard. Everything is wrapped up neatly in the end.
Personally, I really liked that Sion and Mia aren't meant to be because Sunkland and its people are too important for him to let go. He can't just leave them behind to follow her. It provides a nice contrast to Abel and his sole devotion towards Mia.
This might be my new favorite volume! The previous volume might have set up the situation in Sunkland, but this volume really delivered on the drama. 5 stars.
Forget great Sage, for the day to be saved this time we will need Mia to be a great judge, but can our Mia-First girl really provide such righteous judgment on anything...even Mushrooms? Another quick moving and hilarious volume in the adventures of the most overly hyped princess in literary history...but that is what makes her our heroine!
El capítulo extra de Ludwig fue hermoso, y me acabo de dar cuenta que Rafina es más tierna de lo que creía, es adorable, por otro lado Tiona me cae cada vez más mal, no ha hecho nada malo pero su personalidad no me gusta.
Just finished reading book numbers 9, and once again I have to give 5 stars. I absolutely love the story and character. I can't get enough! Looking forward to book nr.10!
A refreshingly heart-felt entry. I know that it's sort of the central joke, but when every act of virtue by the protagonist is followed by by an authorial aside telling us that of course she was secretly being venal and selfish, it can get pretty tedious after a while; it's nice to see Mia resolve a bad situation with some degree of genuineness. This volume also resolves the threatened love triangle between Abel, Mia, and Sion, which pleases me, because I find love triangles very boring most of the time.
