I thought re-reading all 8 volumes before this one would kinda wear me out but oh my god this one was so good!! I never really know what gonna happen when I read this series but I know I like it!
After that church scene, I honestly had to take a short break from reading because the fear I felt had me in a chokehold, and couldn't seem to shake the fear I felt at that moment for the characters involved!!
I feel like with every new volume I'm always saying the stakes are higher than they've ever been, and that is exactly what I want to say about this volume! However, I think the stakes are different because, unlike previous volumes, MULTIPLE people have been wiped out. These are innocent civilians and can't even imagine how many people have been taken out due to there being an overwhelming amount of nationwide attacks that are extremely well planned. I honestly felt more fear in this volume than I have any other volume thus far!
There were A LOT of fighting scenes and hand-downs that last chapter was the most intense and my favorite! I was internally screaming why it had to end on a cliffhanger because I NEED to see what is going to happen next!!
I appreciated the focus on Kafka again! This was a surprisingly touching volume as well that had a few reunions that made me tear up a little bit. I truly hope that his fear that people will turn away from him and/or be afraid of him has diminished due to everything he has seen and heard from people who care for him. <3
And Shinomiya!! SHE COMPLETELY SLAYED!! This volume reminded me how much SHE has grown and that it's not just other characters that have grown in their skills. I was such a proud reader seeing her shine in all her fierceness because she is SO fierce!!
Definitely another amazing volume and continue to love this series so much!
The first half of the book continues the lull started in the last volume, giving us a little more character interaction before the next big battle kicks off. When kaiju do finally appear, the main characters of the cast begin entering the fray one by one, each displaying how they have leveled up over the past month. As alway, Kikoru Shinomiya steals the show and makes a case for why she's really the main character of this book.
The author keeps hitting hard on the theme of power passing to the next generation, a message that must hit pretty hard in a gerontocracy like Japan.
The calm before the storm. As Kaiju No 9 prepares the chess board with new devastating kaijus to unleash on the world, the Defence Force looks to work on their own skills and the possibility to harness the power of previous Kaijus.
The volume offers a quick and short sneak peek at two new fusions as the war against Kaiju No 9 begins. There's not much that happens beyond establishing new power struggles and the heroes' motivation to destroy these kaijus and maintain the peace.
SOOOO GOOD!! All my favorite characters, great balance between action and story movement, PERFECT ART 😍
and don't forget- NARUMIIIII 😍😍😍 his mentor/mentee banter with Kikoru is so fun and I can't wait to see where it goes. This one also has a way less intense cliffhanger than the other ones, which I'm grateful for!
i loved every single page of this volume — absolute peak. i had to revisit the chapters just to give it a rating, since i’d read it about a week ago and didn’t even notice i’d binged through volumes (and it still hit just like the first time). the stakes are high, the character interactions are warm as ever, and there’s even some tenderness?? it almost doesn’t make sense — this world is harsh and brutal — but reading it just fills me with warmth. they can be snarky, they can joke at each other’s expense, but at the end of the day they care and genuinely want to help one another.
also: everyone is cool. literally everyone. not in an overexaggerated way — i’m just genuinely invested in every single character’s story and growth. and the art is brilliant. it delivers all the tension, and some pages make you stop and just go whoa.
The stakes have been raised as no 9 has created some more Kaijus and they all look pretty cool, my favorite is the one that looks like it came from Evangelion. But now we have a full on invasion with multiple fights going on at the same time. But they use this to show off how every major character has improved since the last time they fought as many of them are now using the number weapons. And we also get some emotional moments as Kafka gets his phone back and manages to reunite with his former team mates from the Third Division it was really touching and well done.
I binge read all 12 volumes that are currently out because this is an absolute MASTERPIECE.
I love all the characters, the message, the art, the plot, the everything !!! 😭😭😭 THIS IS EVERYTHING. I can’t wait for this to get animated. And yea I’m a mf simp for Hoshina 🤠
The author really *gets* what it's like to be in your 30s. Also bold move to glaze over the training arc but I think I prefer it. now we get to be surprised by their power ups but they still earned them by training. Smart move.
“I told you I had faith that you’d come back, right? When I said that, I wasn’t speaking for myself, but for everyone.”
This volume has a strong mix of character emotion and looming danger, but it doesn’t quite hit as hard as I expected. Kafka’s inner struggle is front and center, especially with how much he doubts himself and fears losing the bonds he’s built. Those moments of hesitation, mixed with some much-needed encouragement from people around him, make him feel human even in the middle of extraordinary circumstances. The humor still lands too, and Kafka’s ugly crying brought both laughter and sympathy in equal measure. The series shines brightest when it balances vulnerability with determination, and that comes through here.
The pacing, though, drags in places. There’s a lot of buildup, a lot of talk about what’s coming, and while it successfully raises tension, it sometimes leaves you wishing things would move faster. The training sections are interesting but repetitive, and some plot beats feel stretched longer than necessary. Still, the focus on relationships—whether it’s Kafka reconnecting with his squad or subtle moments with Mina—adds warmth in the middle of chaos. These quieter interactions are what give the story heart, even when the kaiju threat looms in the background.
Visually, the artwork captures both the intensity of the fights and the softer character moments well. The creeping dread of what’s ahead is effective, and there are chilling glimpses of how dangerous the world is becoming. By the end, the sense of calm before the storm is undeniable, leaving the impression that something much larger is about to unfold. It’s a solid entry, even if it feels like the series is taking a deep breath before its next big moment.
Kafka finally reconnected with old friends- it was actually kind of sweet and emotional, but still done in a comedic way to lighten the mood. I'm worried about the sudden appearances of Kaiju, no doubt brought about from No. 9, it's definitely beginning to feel like the start of a war. The Director might be a lost cause now, which I did think would happen but at the same time I had faith everyone would save him in time- maybe there's still hope? Kikoru donning her mother's old suit is poetic, just the circumstances aren't great. We got a super cute lunch date between Kafka and Mina (I'm delusional, but whatever), I'm so glad Mina still hasn't entirely left Kafka behind and still believes he can catch up to her. That wedding scene was quite brutal, bringing a darkness to the series once more, but Captain Narumi was really freaking cool in the new suit, along with Kikoru! I kind of like their playful student and master dynamic. Also, who's the Captain Soichiro Hoshina? Relation to Soshiro?? Hoshina wearing No. 10's suit...wow, and of course it's the first suit that can talk and have a will of its own, hahah, it's going to be so fun seeing Hoshina trying to wrangle him into shape!
As the series progressed through its 9th volume, I’m engaged as ever and one question is on my mind. What are Kaiju no.10’s plans? What is their alignment and are they truly good or are they planning something deadly, this is something I think about a lot given he’s refusing to bond with the person wearing him, and it seems he just wants a body to control / posses. We shall see in vol 10, I hope it’s out of left field, his plans!
Highlight of this volume is Kikoru using weapon no.4 and Hoshina using weapon no.10. As expected, Kikoru is a top class Kaiju combatant and she took after her parents’ best traits: their strength and mobility. I also feel like she’s grown a bit more mature after her father’s death. Besides that, Hoshina and Kaiju no.10 are having trouble cooperating so I’m excited to see how their fighting style will evolve as they get more chances to work together.
