At first, I didn’t completely hate the book. It was whatever—even though I was annoyed with how much description there was. We would literally get a step by step ritual of what the character was doing... for it not to be even relevant. I skimmed PAGES of useless information. There was even chapters/scenes dedicated to these descriptions.
But still, at that point, I was considering a 3 star rating. Until I hit 30% or so.
We’re going to do jot notes, so I can try to calmly list what’s wrong with this book.
1. Lisa is way too good at being a secretary. I’m sorry, but she made no mistakes at all for a month, and I find that completely unrealistic—but what was worse? The MOMENT she makes a “mistake”, she gets fired. This is why you set low expectations lol.
2. He FIRED HER BECAUSE HE WAS ATTRACTED TO HER? I’m sorry, but what? How is that her problem? Yes, I know this is a CEO boss relationship, but I’m so dumbfounded. I’ve never read a book where someone gets fired because of the MAN’S feelings. Maybe learn how to control your emotions and be professional. Or??? Don’t punish her at all?? For your feelings???
3. Their “attraction” for each other came out of no where. Literally. One chapter she respects him as a boss, the next one, she’s getting off at the image of him. Vice versa was him. He literally said how good of a secretary she was/saw her as a good employee. Occasionally he thought she was attractive, but he quickly shot it down until suddenly “she makes him lose control”?? what control?????
4. When he fires her, I’m happy she’s threatening to bring a lawyer into this but LMAO?? Tell me how within a few chapters, her DAD calls and thanks him for offering her a job/saving her years ago, AND THEN SHE CALLS and thanks him for the opportunity??
5. “Oh by the way you probably don’t remember me but you saved me 10 years ago” almost quoting this. And it was so cringey during the phone call. Like, now it seems like youre telling him because you want your job back??? I dont understand why she told him AT ALL. Not only that I still don’t understand why she didn’t tell him right away. Or, I wish she didn’t tell him, and he found out himself.
6. HE ASKS HER TO BE HIS FAKE GIRLFRIEND. Where is the rationality in this. THIS is where my 3 stars went to 1. The audacity of this man. The lack of brain cells of the FMC. I know I’m being harsh, but the fact that when Axel offered her money, SHE SAID NO? take the money. He just fired YOU because of HIS emotions, and youre not gonna take the money?? Maybe I’m petty. Maybe I hold a grudge, but the fact there is NO grovelling on his part, when he KNOWS it was wrong to fire her is beyond me. And that she accepted his offer so easily. I cannot.
7. How quick they got together during their “fake relationship” is almost laughable. Her saying “I’m not like other girls” was gag inducing. Her wishing he meant it when he said “he loves her” is again, HILARIOUS.
8. I’m going to assume Bethany is Axel’s age. So, I let out a snort when, I’m not even kidding, RUNS AWAY when she’s confronted on putting her hands on the FMC.
9. Also, when he gave her job back, I wish she wouldn’t have shown up. Again, I am still entirely bitter and hate the MMC. And this is nothing against “mean” MMC’s. I LOVE a grumpy guy—but there’s a difference between being justifiably grumpy/mean, and whatever Axel is. He’s entitled and just annoys me.
10. You’re telling me. When axel rehired her. And they were still fooling around outside and inside of work. He never told her. They were actually dating? — how is it that he wanted her to be his girlfriend the moment they hooked up, but told her, what? A month or two later? AFTER SHE WAS ALMOST SA-ED?
11. Lisa, honey, while I understand some mother in laws can be completely terrible, you shouldnt say her hating you “doesn’t bother you” unless you actually TRIED to build a relationship with her. It’s natural to WANT a good relationship with your partners family. And Axel, maybe try putting your mother in her place, for the love of god. I don’t know how he has a “good relationship” with her when she doesn’t respect his boundaries and treats someone he loves with such disgust. And the talk of children is hilarious during this whole situation.
12. I believe any victim with SA should not be judged for their decisions, but I do question the logic in not charging her abuser, so he wouldn’t charge Axel for beating him up, AFTER he saved Lisa from SA. In the eyes of the court, Axels behaviour should be seen as justifiable and within reason to restrain the abuser.
13. His mom confuses me. One day she’s ignoring her existence but the moment she learns Lisa donated her hair for charity, she’s a “sensible partner”
14. Bethany’s character is straight from a cliche book from 2010. Her desperation and obsession for Axel is both comical and embarrassing for all women. I haven’t read a stereotypical second lead female character in years.
15. The most hilarious thing ever. She was planning on leaving. Without telling Axel. Without telling him she was pregnant with HIS baby. WHY you might ask? Because she thought he didn’t love her. I’m sorry, but in any universe, how is that a justifiable reason to quit work, hop out of the state and raise a kid alone because you THINK he doesn’t love you. Even IF he didn’t, that’s his baby, and he deserves the right to know.
16. Lastly: what the actual hell happened to her dad. We never figured out what was the magical illness, but he just went to a fancy clinic and came out better? I.... no words.
Overall, the couple didn’t meet (or reunite) until the 20% mark. First kiss/sex around the 50%. After that, it was just them in a relationship but not really a relationship because neither confirmed anything. But they’ve been in love with each other since the 50% mark. Literally no drama in their relationship besides the sudden “oh you don’t love me” but that was resolved within a page. She was also kidnapped, but found her so easily that it lost its impact.
This book has taken the light from me. I feel dull. Destroyed. Broken.
I need rest after this. Goodbye.
