Clio Farren is a bride in pursuit of the perfect venue for her wedding. More than that, she's searching for answers concerning her best friend's sudden death a year ago. She believes Raðljóst Manor holds the key to figuring it out. When Clio shuts herself in with the owner during an Arctic freeze, she unravels more secrets than she expected to in both Nikolai's manor and mind.
Nikolai Trousseau is an unlucky soul, bound to Earth for eternity after drinking a noxious tea millennia ago. He runs a hotel in the Arctic, where polar night liberates him three months each year. With his stash of demon blood running out and a beautiful, uniquely-scented woman poking around his manor, he may discover more thrumming through her veins than he bargained for.
Beka Westrup is an author of fantasy romances. When she's not reading, writing, or chugging exorbitant amounts of coffee, she can be found watching The Office with her husband and two kids at home in Boise, Idaho.
Wow—what an incredible read. This is one of those stories that is going to stay with me for a long time, several scenes in particular. If you think you're picking up just another vampire romance, you're mistaken. The underlying themes in this book are so eye-opening and inspiring and will leave a lasting impact. At least, they certainly did for this reader. Westrup is truly a master of her craft. The author's cadence is effortless to read, guiding you through the story with stunning imagery and lyrical prose. The worldbuilding and lore are top-notch, the romance is addicting and filled with the perfect amount of tension and spice, and the small foreshadowing details were very well-placed. Nik and Clio have earned a special place in my heart, and I'm certain I will be thinking about them long after I've finished this book. Thank you to publisher Lake Country Press for providing me an arc in exchange for an honest review.
The book has that spooky but cozy vibe, if you know what I mean. I'd read this again during winter, while I'm curled up by a fire and sipping on hot cocoa.
WOW. What a book! This book sucked me in immediately, and I only continued to be more pulled in with each turn, twist, and reveal. The beginning was a wondrous slow burn that built a beautiful and natural relationship between the two main characters. There's just enough foreshadowing and hinting so the reader knows there is something deeper going on, and when the reveals happen, they HAPPEN. I love being able to pick out details from earlier chapters that were little hints that all came together towards the end. I was NOT expecting the twist when it came, and yet it made SO much sense that I couldn't see the story going any other way! It was incredible how the author crafted the perfect atmosphere, and even micro-atmospheres, within scenes that made me feel exactly what the character was in that moment, almost like I was in the room with them. The callbacks to earlier scenes were fantastic. The descriptions were gorgeous and some of the lines in this book almost brought me to tears (I did cry a few times in fact, which is a pre-requisite for an amazing book imo). If you like Arctic/ snowy atmospheres, characters with lots of secrets and heartache, and a book that will keep you up reading way, way past your bedtime, I can't recommend this enough!
Such a dynamic and engaging read. The arctic setting was gorgeous and immersive, and Westrup has some of the most beautiful prose I've ever read. Watching the characters grow over time, seeing their relationship deepen was extremely rewarding. If you're looking for a spooky read with a unique setting, and hot yearning this is the read for you!
Do pay attention to the trigger warnings listed as the story does contain instances of abuse, religious trauma and themes, as well as blood references (which is to be expected when the love interest is a vampire lol)
This book has such a pretty cover I just had to get my hands on it! It was touted as having vampires, slow burn romance and a library. And oh man did it deliver!
Nikolai Trousseau owns and runs a manor in the arctic. It’s fancy and secluded and is the perfect place for him to live during the days of polar night. You see, Nikolai is not human. He lives off of demon blood and can’t be in the sunlight. The upcoming freeze will mean 2 weeks of endless blizzards. He intends to close the manor and maybe hunt during this time, until Clio walks into his life. Clio is the daughter of a movie starlet and is engaged to an apostolate of The Divine Light. She is due to be married in 2 weeks and wants to be wed in the Observatory, which boasts a crystal dome and a beautiful view of the Aurora. She negotiated with Nikolai to use the Observatory and hunkers down to spend the next 2 weeks in the manor, alone with Nikolai.
Ok, so, to start off: I hated Clio at first. She was rude, selfish and had no concept of personal space or boundaries. She was not shy about what she wanted and threw cash around to get it or would just muscle her way in. I spent the first bit of the book feeling badly for Nikolai, because she just kept prancing into his personal rooms. However, over the course of the book we learn more about Clio and why she acted that way. She’s looking for answers and was doing what she could to get them. By the end of the book I liked her and better understood her actions.
I loved Nikolai. He seemed like a genuinely good dude. He cares about his staff enough to send them away during the freeze and seems to have a grasp on good client service. He is well spoken and, even when Clio is being aggressive or unreasonable with him, is pretty polite. He has a pretty interesting backstory which we get to hear during the course of the book and I appreciated that it was explained pretty thoroughly!
The book was well written and the pace made sense for the events that were unfolding. I felt myself being sucked into this book and I did not want to stop reading! There is definitely spice and before that there is tension. And it was excellent tension, too! The will they/won’t they was great~
One thing I wish (if we get a book 2) is that we get a bit more insight into the world itself. I want to know why there was a third war and I want to know a bit more about the Divine Light and how it was started as a religion. Fingers crossed for book 2!
Beneath the Bloody Aurora has a bit of everything ~ vampire-like beings, demons, the arctic, an over bearing chef/housekeeper, an amazing library, a heroine who finds her voice and so much more. I definitely recommend this book for anyone wanting a pseudo gothic romance with supernatural elements.
Thank you to Lake Country Press and Beka Westrup for providing me with a free ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I absolutely loved the thought put into the details in every aspect of this story. The descriptors really helped visualize events that were happening. One of my favorite parts about this is the character development of Clio and watching her come into herself and work past trauma. The internal story within the story is absolutely compelling and different than the common take on Vampires, I absolutely loved the lore of it. The ending was a definite cliff hanger, but the events leading up to it was pivotal in the plot twist!
Twilight meets Beauty and the Beast with it's own unique spins and lore. I enjoyed this book and all of the tough topics it explores; from abusive religious cults, to vampires, and soul mates this book has so many deep topics to explore. A true finding of oneself, even if it is your former soul being reborn and your long lost love. I recommend this romantic enticing read!
This is a perfect book to read while winter storms rage outside. The story of Clio and Nikolai is tantalizingly fascinating. The author does an amazing job dropping breadcrumbs for the readers to devour page after page. I was not prepared for the twists and revelations, making this book unputdownable!
Clio has been drawn to a mysterious manor on the edge of the artic circle. What she discovers might have her questioning her past and her future. What sort of secrets does the owner, Nikolai, hold? Let’s find out!
Read if you like: fantasy romance, contemporary fantasy, vampires, forced proximity, slow burn, ‘she’s not mine,’ sensitive vampires, and a leading lady determined to find herself.
Clio is about to marry the picture-perfect, and often absent Duncan, but she’s feeling uneasy. Ignoring her nerves, she jets off to a snowy manor to find a breathtaking wedding venue… and possibly some answers about the death of a friend. What she finds is an inexplicable draw to the house and its incredibly captivating owner. Nikolai has been waiting for polar night and the long freeze so that he can have more freedom to do as he pleases in the dark. When suddenly a meeting with a potential client ends with her forcing a two week stay so she can plan her wedding in his hotel. And he can’t seem to tell her no.
Beneath the Bloody Aurora is a debut by Beka Westrup and the writing is beautiful. The slow burn romance has you screaming at their silly hearts to just go for it, but it’s done so well. The forced proximity within such a beautiful setting makes you long for a getaway of your own with the Aurora Borealis as a backdrop. The couple is the main focus to the plot and I love understanding their story and the unique way they are brought together. And when they get together, it’s very spicy indeed.
The world building with magic, the Church of Light, and beasts and other vampires is interesting, but I need a little more consistency. I loved the idea of the Light and how humans and evil can corrupt it and therefore asking questions and building true faith and not blind faith is very important. A great healing story for those with religious trauma. However, the origins of the fall and how evil and beasts and vampires are created and what’s going on in that realm needed more attention. Also, without knowing if there is a sequel in the works the epilogue is a little out of place. And I love an epilogue.
Overall, a great romance story with fantasy elements and a gorgeous setting all surrounding a tale of personal growth and inner strength. 3.5-4 stars.

Thank you to NetGalley and Beka Westrup for a copy of this book for review.
Cleo is a bride to be with an agenda when she puts sets her site on a remote upscale manor in the Arctic to hold her wedding.
Nikolai is the owner of the manor and an old soul with many secrets and a unique tale to tell.
The Church of the Light, which Cleo's fiance Duncan happens to be a missionary and representative for, is an ominous presence lurking in the background and an integral part of both Cleo and Nikolai's life, even if both don't know the full extent yet.
So when Cleo decides to shut herself in with Nikolai for two weeks during the Arctic freeze sparks fly and a centuries old story is unraveled. This story puts a twist on old vampire lore with elements of magic and of course romance woven in. It's definitely a slow burn romance but the tension and forbidden aspects make it so worth it. There is an underlying mystery to it all with Cleo trying to put together the pieces of her best friends murder and her connection to the manor and Nikolai. There is also more to Cleo than meets the eye.
Beka Westrup's first novel doesn't disappoint. Beneath the Bloody Aurora has a beautiful and wonderful background setting with the Aurora Borealis casting magical lights through the sky and over the characters. The romance and build up to the spice is well done and you know from the beginning that Nikolai and Cleo are just IT for each other, despite the push and pull. The element of mystery surrounding the manor and death's is also there in the background and comes to the forefront throughout the story adding that extra layer to the story. There are a few details missing, some things are a bit rushed, and the ending is left well-open-ended so I'm personally hoping for another book!
A woman desperate to find answers about the death of her best friend, all while in the midst of planning, what should be the happiest day of her life. A journey north to the Arctic, to a hotel, owned by a mysterious man, who may or may not know what happened to her best friend. There is so much to this book that sets you up for a wonderful and intriguing journey not only to find truth but also true love.
Clio for me, was a very well written character, because there was such complexity to her. There were so many layers to her character, layers even she didn’t even know she had until the later part of the book. I found that getting to discover that alongside her character was a very unique reader experience that I thoroughly enjoyed. One of my favorite aspects of her character was the part of her deep inside she couldn’t even identify that rebelled against everything she was putting herself through, including the marriage to her fiancé, who was a no go from the start with me.
Nikolas was an absolute 10/10 from the very beginning for me, because although he is very grumpy and moody, it seemed that almost instantaneously there was a sort of unconscious recognition of Clio in a way that allowed a kinder, more playful and sensual part of Nikolas emerge. That becomes super significant towards the end of the book and it adds to the romance in ways I can’t even describe without spoiling.
The way that vampires are created in this book is very different from the norm which I found extremely refreshing to vampire lore. One thing that really stood out the most to me was the way that Beka introduced the vampire lore for this particular world. Having Nikolas share a tale of folklore, that we learn later is much more than just folklore, was inspired.
There is a religion in this book that is a reminiscent of religious orders that actually exist in our world and I wasn’t sure how this aspect was going to play out in the story, but it actually had a very crucial role. I was very intrigued, with the way that this religious order exists in this world, and how it played a major role in Clio and Nikolas’s story beyond the surface.
Again, this was just a fantastic first debut novel in my opinion, and I am fascinated by the world created by Beka. I will definitely be looking forward to any future novels, I know she currently has a novella, Blood in the Tea Leaves, that is sort of connected to Nikolas and Clio’s story that I will absolutely be reading!
Also, if you are obsessed with elegant writing, Beka is a 10 out of 10! Highly recommend, I will be bragging to all of my friends that I was part of the ARC team for this novel for the rest of my life!
Beneath the Bloody Aurora is a lush bouquet of romance, mystery, and fantasy. The draw in is the Beauty and the Beast forced proximity relationship that builds between Clio & Nikolai. As a story within the story unfolds though, we are invested in the murder mystery and the sinister or supernatural forces that may be responsible.
The slow burn romance here is a delicious simmer. It inspires all the impatience of waiting the last few minutes while a pan of brownies are in the oven. The kind where you're in the other side of the house and still that thick chocolate scent finds you. Inescapable. This burn was so worth the wait.
Also, excuse me, but you happen to have snuck in my favorite trope ever (redacted to avoid spoilers) into this gorgeous romantasy murder mystery. I am eternally grateful and mad at myself for not seeing it coming. Not really mad. So hyped actually. I literally said, "Oh Schnapples!"
The social commentary here is also just as important as the romance. While we're riddled by what is real and what is fantasy, we are still set in a very familiar world with toxic relationships, plague, war, and religious extremists. Each element was treated with deft hands. Content warnings provided at the beginning and available on the publisher's website are greatly appreciated.
Beneath the Bloody Aurora is a perfect choice to add to your winter TBR list. Snowed-in, forced proximity, cozy libraries, steamy snow fights all set against the backdrop of the auroral lights. Get bundled up and tuck in for a great read.
Did you read King of Battle and Blood and think, 'I wish this was better...' If so, FEAR NOT! Because Beka Westrup has arrived to save the day! I couldn't put the book down and I'm so excited for the sequel teased in the epilogue. One of the best parts of this book was how realistic the relationship development felt. At no point did I feel like anything was rushed or forced. Both characters were incredibly genuine at all times and had unique personalities that kept me on my toes.
This book has it all: -Vampires -Forced proximity -Murder mystery elements -A man absolutely simping for his woman (in a very hot way) -A literally INSANE plot twist I didn't see coming for a second, but that was still a perfect fit for the story and made me read even faster -Spice, spice, baby
Also, this book dealt with big themes that are often difficult to tackle in a tactful, understanding way I really admired. Much of the book discusses religious abuse and, while done through a fictional lens, reading about characters overcoming things like this truly helps so many people.
I sincerely look forward to buying this book and supporting Westrup's career, considering I am now determined to read everything she writes! Many thanks to Lake Country Press for the digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.
There's a note I made about 23% into the book stating "what the hell is going on here?!" I kept feeling like even as that question was slowly answered, there were still missing parts to the story. Low and behold, OF COURSE (spoiler alert), there were missing parts to the story, because the characters themselves didn't have all of the parts of their own stories! I received an ARC of this book, and I fell into the story and binge read it. I truly loved that it opened with Nik's POV; I feel like we don't usually get the MMC's POV-when it is included- until further into books. As the story unfolded and more pieces of the puzzle were put together, my heart broke for both characters(don't worry, Beka put it back together by the end) and I really wanted to jump into the book and fight a certain someone. There are still puzzles to be solve (yes, I absolutely was like "WTF?!" at the end) and I can't wait to see what Beka does in book two!

- A unique fantasy romance with a dash of spice, a lot of tension and blindingly beautiful scenery -
I felt like i had read so many books in this catagory. But this one took me by surprise. Without spoiling to much of it´s content, i would like to say the powers and world in this book are simply unique.
I can´t wait to discover more of this world Beka so kindly shared with us.
I have recieved an arc of this book, but my review was not affected by this. I am simply stating my opinion. And if you don´t believe me, you should read the book yourself.
Wow. Just wow. This was an incredible book, it’s not your average vampire romance of “I want to suck your bloooood” book. Nik is a deep character and Clio overcomes so much and grows into a new woman. The themes throughout are incredibly relatable, the world building was beautiful-I swear I saw it all in my mind, and the twists were AMAZING. I honestly cannot wait to do a re-read when I get my pre-ordered physical copy.
This book is stunning, truly. The storyline is intriguing and unique, the characters are fully developed in all their flaws and attributes, and the descriptive language is absolutely gorgeous. I could not put this book down and am instantly a fan of Beka Westrup; Beneath the Bloody Aura is easily in my Top 10 of all time.
Beneath the Bloody Aurora was a delightful surprise! I knew I was walking into a vampire romantasy book, but since I like to go in blind, I don't read the blurbs of books. When I dove into this, I quickly realized I'd signed up for something a lot deeper than a typical fantasy romance.
To start, the book takes place after a third world war, and though it mimics our own in terms of technology (phones, computers, cars, etc) it is is also a world in which there's been a religious upheaval and a "Divine Light" religion has stepped in as the "moral" beacon for the world. Surprise surprise-- they aren't.
We open the book with Clio, who is at Nikolai's arctic resort/manor in search of a wedding venue. We know her fiancee is overbearing. We already don't like him, and her mother is a turd. So when smooth Nikolai is duped into letting her stay during a two-week arctic freeze--with literally *no one* else around-- well, we're rooting for some CHANGE OF HEART.
And we get it... SLOWLY. Talk about a slow burn! This book didn't get steamy until the 75% mark, although the tension was ratcheted up to a delicious state. Instead we get a lot of interesting subplots which become very integral to Nik and Clio's story. Clio's best friend was killed two years prior, and the only clues she can find have led her to this manor. But it gets so much deeper than that, becoming an indictment of organized "our way is the only way" religion, the objectification and abuse of women within those communities, and an exploration of how parenting and childhood can have lasting effects. If that sounds too heavy, don't worry-- it doesn't feel heavy in the moment-- it feels like a good, fast paced story with interesting characters and lots of action.
This story wraps up nicely, but it's not a stand alone. Looking forward to reading more about this world, and about Nik and Clio. --- As a side note, let me offer kudos to the author for not being at all weird about Clio's virginity. Virgin trope is one of my least favorites and yet sometimes you gotta have a virgin...But Beka Westrup knocked it out of the park. ---
Thanks to Net Galley and LCP for the review copy in exchange for an honest review.
What a magical and amazing read! Beka's prose is truly unmatched, and her characters have real depth that gets you right in the heart. This isn't your typical vampire book, and it will suck (no pun intended) you in from the very beginning as you read to unwind Nikolai's past and Clio's secrets. I love the Beauty and the Beast vibe, and the artic setting is so unique and fun. Behind the plot is a deeper story about finding the good in yourself, overcoming trauma, and learning you're worthy of love. I don't have the words to express how beautiful this novel is, which is fine because Beka's prose is beautiful enough to show you all on its own. if you haven't read Blood in the Tea Leaves, I highly recommend picking it up as a companion to this novel to find out more about the side characters. I can't wait for the sequel and eagerly await Beka's next book.
My feelings about this book, as told by gifs. Minor spoilers.
Nikolai aka the perfect book boyfriend:
Clio (I was so proud of her):
How I felt about Clio's fiance. Nobody wanted this guy, and yet there he was.
Now - this book ; OH MY GOOOOODDDDDDDDDDDD The twists, the turns, the tension, the pull, the push, the world base. Just PHENOMINAL. It gives you all the feels, and you go from AWW to wanting to throw your kindle and than back to MAN F**K HER to AWWWW again to WOW!!! WHAT A CLIFFY
To say I enjoyed this book would be putting it MILDLY. This book reached in and literally has me consciously streaming my thoughts chapter by chapter.
SUCH a good read. I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book, cause I see the storm just BREWING. Its happening.
Oh, and Duncan still just needs to fall down a well and go BYE BYE
Clio & Nikolai now have a place in my heart ❤️ I love a nice spicy Vampire Romance (& this is that😏) but it’s also so much more. Clio is trying to find her place in the world, and questioning her beliefs as well as the religious institution she was raised in. Nikolai is hurt and jaded, shutting himself away from the rest of the world. When their paths cross, THE TENSION. Ohh I loved it. Such a great slow burn 🔥. Their relationship grows as they both learn more about not only each-other, but themselves, their pasts, and their beliefs. Since this is fantasy there are also some cool powers involved as well. 😎 I truly enjoyed this book!
If you like mystery, forced proximities, vampires, magic, and a slow burn with a bit of angst, then READ THIS!!!!
I loved this story. It was definitely a bit different then the average vampire romance and I really liked that.
At first I wasn’t a huge fan of the fmc but once you get to certain parts of the book you realize there was definitely reasons for her behavior. Nikolai was definitely an amazing mmc and I truly liked him.
The perfect wintry, comfy-cozy read. I was lucky enough to read an ARC, and I fell in love with the world the author creates. While technically a "vampire" story, the lore that Westrup gives feels anything but cliche. I can only hope she turns this into a series, because I can't wait to dive back into this world. Prose was amazing, and the MMC will make you swoon.
OMG!! I could NOT put this book down. I went into this book completely expecting to get a fluffy “snowed in with a vampire” vibes and I got that and SO much more. This story took an unexpected and amazing turn. The tension between Clio and Nikolai is immaculate and when it finally reaches its breaking point, ooooh is it amazing. Beka did amazing with this book and I cannot wait to see what she does next!
Absolutely fantastic! Definitely worth all the high ratings and praise. You’d never think this was a debut novel. Yes it’s that good! This is well written and executed. This isn’t your typical vampire romance. There’s twists that I didn’t expect and yes there is some smutty scenes. The ending leaves an opening for a book two, though with a story line that isn’t a secondary character. Trigger warnings are listed by the author at the beginning of the book. Seriously READ THIS BOOK!
I absolutely loved this book from the first page I was hooked. Clio and Nikolai’s snow ball fight was so cute! And that ending almost made me throw my kindle!! I cannot wait to see what Beka has in store for us in the next book!!!
