The path of a doppelganger is a simple one-target the victim, isolate them, consume them, and become them. This is what Scott Cane has become. He exists as a mythical being-a thing of nightmares. Except. Scott Cane is our hero. The real nightmare is not some creature of the night. It is those evil vile things who walk amongst us wearing normal faces and living normal lives. In the low country of South Carolina, a serial killer stalks his prey. Chloroform in hand, he waits just off the trail, for a cute little brunette to jog helplessly by. Unfortunately for him, the brunette is hoping he will strike. The pattern repeats itself for decades-target, isolate, consume, become. Scott Cane is not merely a shape-shifter. Nor is he technically a Doppelganger. Using one single drop of blood, he can replicate that person at that exact time. He inherits all of their strengths and weaknesses. Their memories exist as flashes of words and images but their carnal instincts remain. Instincts becoming harder to control.

I am a writer of Dark Fantasy Crime Fiction. My novels (I hope) are entertaining and keep you on the edge of your seat. They are not highly stylized nor pretentious, and they do not take themselves too seriously. I believe that books should be enjoyable and easy for the masses to read, like a great television series, I strive to leave the reader hanging at the end of every chapter. I don't think books should 'build up' to a climax and then fall off.

My debut novel, Lazarus Cane, was released on December 1, 2011. The follow up novel, Michael Faust, is finished and waiting on my publisher. I am currently writing the third in the series, Cassandra Gates. I intend to take the series to a fourth book, and capping it off with a first person prequel.

I won this book in a firstreads giveaway.

Scott Cane is a twist on the concept of a hero. He has a strong desire to see justice done and defend the innocent from falling prey to violent serial killers. In order to do this he tracks the killers himself and uses his unnatural abilities as a sort of shape shifter to exterminate them and take over their life as he hunts down his next victim. The catch is not only does he inherit all of their physical abilities, he also has to cope with flashes of their memories and killer instincts which can be hard to control.

I really liked the doppleganger aspect of this story. It set this book apart from some of the other murder mysteries I've read. I also liked the storyline between Scott Caine and "Four." In fact this an area that I wish would have been further developed. I would have liked to have seen more chapters from the perspective of "Four." I felt like there wasn't enough there especially since the book ended with him.

The other thing I would have liked to have seen was a little less time devoted to the relationship between Cain/Ally and Cynthia. I liked how the relationship seemed to help Cain with fighting off his "demons" but sometimes it was a little distracting from the hunter/hunted aspect of the story line.

I do hope that there is a sequel, especially considering the cliffhanger ending! I'd like to see where the struggle between Cain and his inner urges as well as between him and "Four" play out.

I would call this story a sort of Dexter story with a twist. The twist is what makes this story so compelling. Anyone that loves a story where the bad guy gets what he deserves will love this one. There is just enough violence, sex and weird goings on that you just can't help to keep flipping those pages to see what happens next. I highly recommend this book and think that Jeremy Kline has a great future as a writer! I will be looking forward to his books in the future!

This was a really good read and by the end of the story I felt a solid connection with most of the characters. There were several twists and layers to the story that really required you to pay attention so you need to commit to this one (which in my opinion is a good thing). I thought this was a unique story that at the end of the day left me very pleased that I found it. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

This was a great read. It was fast paced, had a story line that drew me in, lots of twists and turns, and the characters were engaging. All I want to know now is, Mr. Kline when will the next book be out?

This is a very fun and nontraditional thriller. I expected a little more violence, I did not expect such well drafted characters. There were many fun twists along the way, some that an adept reader might foresee, but many were just nice surprises. Mr. Kline has pre-sold me his next book.

Fiction. 2012. Read 2012.

I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

Interesting story. There's a lot of dialog making it read more like a screenplay than a novel & that kept the pace fast. It isn't a book that makes you regret the time spent reading it, and that's something! I almost gave this book three stars but couldn't. It's a good story, but not an engrossing read. The characters are not empathetic and the writing isn't stylish; nothing pulls in the reader other than the fast flow of dialog. That is less the author's fault than the editor's. Repeating myself, the story's interesting. The book needs a good editing, from basic typos to style and flow. A few of the typos are so glaring that my hand itched because I didn't have a pen to correct them. Their frequency was distracting. So, 2 stars but I'd encourage you to read it.

I actually won this book on Good Reads (this one and the next one, Michael Faust) and I was excited to try the series. It was different from what I expected but I enjoyed it. The series has a very clever concept behind it, with the narrator communicating with those whose roles he takes on.
