Having completed the first three temples and collected some of the gems needed to defeat the Evil Emperor, the Chosen One (aka the trolling player) and Qube (his ever-cheerful companion) must navigate the increasingly broken game world.
New hurdles abound as the player wrestles with the fact that his companions might be sentient, Qube tries her hand at solo adventuring, and the rest of the party begin to awaken… and not all of them are happy about what they discover.
Book 2 of a LitRPG / GameLit adventure about an NPC freed of its programming loop and brought along on a player's journey of adventure and power progression.
About the Prophecy Approved Companion is a fun an often hilarious parody of old school games, dungeons and dragons, and every player who has ever thought “what happens if I do this...”. An original take on life inside an RPG, from the perspective of a glitched NPC.
This was a good second instalment in Tevagah’s Prophecy Approved Companion series. It built on the strengths of the first book and eliminated a few of the weaknesses and was an improvement in general.
This series is adventure/comedy LitRPG with a fun twist. The twist being the fact the POV character is an NPC character coming to sentience while following around the human Chosen One player on his quest through a fully immersive futuristic fantasy RPG game. The coming to sentience elements did tend to give the story a slightly YA coming of age style tone but it was still a tone that worked well for the story.
I felt like the story was a bit more meaningful and interesting in this second instalment as The Chosen One and the game development team behind the futuristic RPG fantasy world setting of this story had become aware of the developing sentience of not only Qube but of the other characters as well and were actively monitoring their development. It was also a big plus for the story that the support cast were coming to sentience in their own right as it really added the depth to their characters that was lacking in the first two thirds of the first book.
Qube is a pretty fun lead character and it was as enjoyable as ever to see her learn and grow over the course of the story. Even The Chosen One had a bit more depth to his character as he realised his companions were more than just throwaway game pieces so had to adjust his attitude a bit. That even lead to a few touching emotional moments in the story!
All in all I felt like this was a good instalment of the series and that the story seems to be going from strength to strength. Looking forward to the third book and the continued growth of the Chaos Crew!
Rating: 3.5 stars. I’m rounding up rather than down this time to reflect the fact that I did enjoy the second book more than the first book.
Audio Note: This was a Soundbooth Theatre production. Annie Ellicot did the main narration and the female voices WB it was supported by Jeff Hays and Gary Furlong voicing various members of the male cast. Plus there was some singing, music, and sound effects in the production. Not as much as one would find in a Graphic Audio by a long shot but definitely some. As always I felt like the Soundbooth team did a fantastic job with audio.
This continues the story of Qube, a healer and Companion, who is somehow gaining sentience and is currently cursed to be invisible; and her party of adventurers; and the Chosen One (actually a player of the game Cube is unknowingly part of). Do yourself a favor and read Book 1 before this one! There is a huge amount of backstory, character development, plot development, and it will give much more insight into what is going on in Book 2 and Book 3. The main characters are back: Definitely Bad Guy, Sexy Screamy Spider Lady, Sewer Bard, and Squiggles (a sharktopus). Some new characters are added: Scaly Waley (a wyvern), and several monsters who are tamed rather than being killed: a giant scorpion, a pharoh, and others. The team is visiting castles where the Chosen One tries to break the system and Qube tries to figure out what is going on and why. Some secrets are uncovered as Qube gains abilities and understanding, though she and her colleagues are still totally confused about the ‘world’ they live in. This is a fascinating study in the personality of an artificial intelligence becoming sentient. There is also a psychological investigation of how an AI as a character in a game would perceive the artificial world and try to make sense of it.
Qube has proven some level of sentience, so now the Chosen One and Developers want to see if the rest of the party can grow. There are more elemental temples to clear, character sidequests to unlock, and optional content to explore.
The lighthearted tone of the first book get weighed down by increasing existential crises as the story continues. It moves closer to making readers question the ethics of how they treat video game characters. Sexy Screaming Spider Lady's innuendo game gets stronger as she takes more control of her dialog. Still nothing too adult but more of it actually makes sense.
This was a pretty decent book but nothing really happened. I thought this was the final book but it is just the middle of a trilogy.
That's really it. There were funny parts, heartwarming parts, ominous parts but at the end of the day the story is stagnant as nothing really changes. I think book 3 will be much better.
The narration was good but over produced. If someone is whispering on the other side of a door but the characters hear every word then I don't need actual muffled whispering that makes me turn my car volume up.
This series is excellent! I love how we, the readers, know exactly what's going on in so many places, but the narration, from people inside the world, only reflects their ways of comprehending typical player behavior. Really looking forward to the third book.
Honestly, the only thing that stuck out at me was a description of a character crab-walking when it made no sense. After a brief re-read, I think they were actually duck-walking, although I can see how they could make that mistake.
A fantastic follow up to the first book! If you enjoyed the first you get that and more in this sequel! The Chosen One continues to break things in classic gamer fashion and begins teaching his companions to do the same. The companions themselves continue to grow and develop their own unique personalities outside of what was written for them with a potentially tantalizing reward...
This book was even better than the first. I love how the characters are developing, though can't say I'm a big fan of the other two male characters that much. I love that there's more of the player in this one. His VA, Gary Furlong, is awesome. Fits the character perfectly.
Well written and fast paced, full of action, adventure, magic, glitches, and learning with a cast of likeable characters with found family and allies. I love how the characters are written, they feel alive, and I can’t wait for the next one.
Really liked book 2. Thought the change in the characters was awesome. I loved the character interactions in the book and I am really excited for the next book.
Funny, charming, and meta AF. A good book for lighthearted fun. Characters are likable and have growth. Well integrated with the story. Will definitely listen to the next book.
Am standing smiling and clapping, book #2 in the Prophecy Approved Companion series was another instalment of challenges, explanations, adventures, madness, much laughing out loud with audience suggestions. Waiting patiently for narration on book #3 in the series. Thank you for another collection of your words Tevagah and yay… Annie Ellicot, Gary Furlong and Jeff Hays for your superb eloquence, very much appreciated Everyone. :-)
I loved the second book in the series. I just about peed myself laughing so hard. The growing questions of personhood and agency are excellent, and I can’t wait for the next book!
