In addressing both the personal and the political in her wonderful, new book, Sunrise Ruby, Karen Warinsky shines a light on the struggles we see in the world, as well as the unseen struggles that make us who we are. These poems are timely and timeless, touching upon gun violence, Covid, the ravages of war, as well as our most vulnerable moments with family, and what it means to create ourselves. In the end, Warinsky reminds us that our mission is to “help each other through. / Keep your needle handy. / Get ready to make a stitch.” These are poems of action and heart. You will want to re-read and savor this beautiful collection!

The 'Sunrise Ruby' is a beautiful image as described in the poem "Battle Ground States." There is more than one way to look at something and she embraces all of it. Thoroughly engaging throughout, we go on quite a journey with the author! We see the small town early life with its joys and imperfections sitting side by side, then the bigger dualities of modern life wonders and the overwhelming challenges of pandemic and political strife, technology and pollution. And finally in the third section, she shows us the ways that connect and give hope, relief. It all works! An ambitious and accomplished work, you can't help but feel uplifted by the end. Very relatable, many of us have felt this way. The author makes a "Case for Hope!"
A keen observer, with clarity and confidence, a bit sardonic, Warinsky dispatches a fearless take on our wayward condition, a fix with heart in dispirited times. A beautiful cover draws you in. The poet's engaging voice keeps you from putting it down.
These poems celebrate life while at the same time advocating for justice, care for the environment and the end of oppression --all delivered with grace and good humor.
