Hockey Girl Loves Drama Boy

Rate this book
New York Times bestseller Faith Erin Hicks is back with Hockey Girl Loves Drama Boy , a young adult graphic novel romance about a hotheaded hockey player who asks for temper management lessons from the cool, calm boy in drama club.

It should have been a night of triumph for Alix’s hockey team. But her mean teammate Lindsay decided to start up with her usual rude comments and today Alix, who usually tries to control her anger, let it finally run free. Alix lashes out and before she knows it, her coach is dragging her off Lindsay, and the invitation to the Canada National Women’s U18 Team’s summer camp is on the line.

She needs to learn how to control this anger, and she is sure Ezra, the popular and poised theater kid from her grade is the answer. So she asks for his help. But as they hang out and start get closer, Alix learns that there is more to Ezra than the cool front he puts on. And that maybe this friendship could become something more....

Born in the wilds of British Columbia, the young Faith frolicked among the Sasquatch native to the province before moving to Ontario at age five. There she was homeschooled with her three brothers, and developed an unnatural passion for galloping around on horseback, though never without a proper helmet (because you only get one skull). After twenty years of suffering through Ontario’s obscenely hot summers, she migrated east, and now lives beside the other ocean in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She worked in animation for a bit, and now draws comics full time. She’s not sure how that happened either.

Hockey Girl Loves Drama Boy is out today! I hope readers enjoy my comic about a couple of messy weirdos who unexpectedly find out they'd like to kiss. Warning: This comic has multiple silly Canadian references.

This was a cute story! I know Faith Erin Hicks from her work on Pumpkinheads and I’ve always enjoyed her art style. This had a lot of sweet romance, friendship and family oriented moments in it. I liked the focus on hockey as well as theater. This was a nice and easy story that I had fun reading.
Side note, I’d love for writers to pick a new name for the stereotypical mean girl in their books. I’m tired of the Lindsays in books making us real life Lindsays always look bad 😂

If someone was like “Hey Brian, if one of your favourite authors wrote a book where one character plays one of your favourite sports and also might be on the autism spectrum and another character has your son’s name and does one of the activities you respect the most and they just genuinely find each other amidst their own high school drama and generational trauma and it’s sweet and honest and funny and real, what would you rate that book?” I’d clearly give it 5 stars.

So yeah, this book gets 5 stars.

I was so happy when i found out this book was available on libby after i randomly stumbled upon it on goodreads.

Need a hockey romance read but don’t want any smut and just want cozy ones that make your heart warm reading them? (+ very pretty illustration) then this book is for you!

Alix is a hockey player who is on a team with Lindsay who is very rude to her and always says something mean, basically bullying her in the locker room after every match even though Alix always does her best. Until one day Alix just couldn’t take it anymore and lashes out before she knows it.
Her coach warns her because of it; if she can’t handle her anger then the invitation to the Canada National Women’s U18 Team Summer Camp is on the line.

Alix then seeks help from the theatre kid, Ezra. Their relationship is going from friendship to something more.

I feel bad for Faith Erin Hicks. Hard as I try, I just can't like her graphic novels. I keep trying, but they all have the same problems, and I'm tired of attempting to enjoy them.

The characters are one-dimensional and basic: Alix is socially awkward and likes hockey. Ezra is sassy and likes theatre. That's about it--except for the fact that Ezra is bisexual, which is obnoxiously hammered in every few pages. It feels like a PSA about bisexuality written by a straight person, and it only gets progressively more cliche and clunky as the two characters' relationship develops.
The characters also don't act like real people, for the sake of the plot. Ezra has a best female friend who he slept with once, but this doesn't seem to affect their dynamic in the slightest until it's necessary to further the story. Alix's hockey coach (and every other member of the team) casually watches the team captain, a stereotypical over-the-top mean girl cliche, verbally abuse the other girls and just stands there doing nothing, because if she reacted at all, we wouldn't have a plot. And Ezra just decides to help this random girl he does not know because she approached him in the hallway. Nothing rings true or plausible, and there are no catalysts for the characters' choices. It feels kind of like watching amateur actors in a play who didn't study their characters; no one seems to know why they're doing what they're doing, other than because Hicks wrote it.

The story is clunky and strange, and it isn't helped by the weak character writing. Because there are no catalysts or reasons for major decisions, the pacing feels really off and like characters are just moving from one item on a story list to another. I've always felt this way about Hicks' work, and it's a major weak point that needs to be addressed and just never is. It bleeds into every other aspect of the story until there's nothing left to enjoy. It's predictable, cliche, and very unenjoyable. I was just bored, so bored, and counting the pages until the end.

Hicks' art style is charming when viewed statically, but she doesn't have a firm enough grasp on expressions to do sequential art storytelling. Her characters are always blushing, all the time, which makes it very hard to read their emotions. There are a few interesting panel choices, but not enough to make this a story that needed to be told as a graphic novel. The hockey action sequences especially are very hard to understand. There's also a lot of strange cross-hatching going on, which I think is an attempt at shading, but reads more like scratches or hair or other texture, and makes things feel muddy and busy. I've always liked the basics of her art style--I actually love the busy lines!--but it just doesn't work as a black-and-white graphic novel and is hard to read. Even the color splashes feel pointless and awkward rather than aesthetically pleasing. I think this, as well as her other works, would have been much better in full color, as it would complement her busy linework rather than leave it hanging. Her art looks fantastic in Pumpkinheads , and it's jarring to see it look so mediocre and borderline bad here.

All of this is business as usual for Hicks, and it makes me feel bad for her. She clearly has a passion for the medium, and I enjoyed her novel, Comics Will Break Your Heart . She has cute story ideas, and her art style could be great in a graphic novel. But there's something essential that all of her work continues to miss, and I desperately wish she could find it, because I want so badly to enjoy Hicks' work. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like that will be happening any time soon.

This was a sweet, feel-good high school romance between a hockey loving girl and a queer theatre geek. Opposites attract in this heart-felt graphic novel perfect for fans of Heartstoppers. I loved that it's set in British Columbia and all the Canadian references and thought the bullying/anger management rep was really well done. Highly recommended, especially if you enjoyed the author/artist's earlier work on Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell or the series Check, please! by Ngozi Ukazu. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review!

This was such a fresh breath of air to read. The book was cute, the graphics were vivid and the characters were realistic and likable, the plot was relatable. The author and the graphic artist really worked well together in this book to create a great graphic novel that has substance, likeable characters and a well defined plot. Would recommend this graphic novel to any Young Adult.

3.5

A lot of interesting and relevant topics (bullying, sexual identity, rage management, complicated family relations...), and some fluff to add to the mix; but, for some reason, I always find Faith Erin Hicks' graphic novels slightly lacking when it comes to character development, or the romantic aspect.

Things felt too rushed, and the art, albeit really good, somehow didn't match the tone of the story for me.

So while I enjoyed the reading, it's not really one for the ages when it comes to my personal shelves.

Actual rating 3.5/5 stars!

I loved this graphic novel- a quick read with poignant topics and a fluff plot!

It felt a bit rushed to me, and the art was a tad distracting which made the flow a bit off for me. The art was gorgeous, don’t get me wrong, and the two tone was lovely, but the way the faces were drawn disrupted the story for me sometimes!

Unfortunately a miss for me. I could tell the author had never been on or around a girls hockey league lol. Also, plot points kept coming in out of nowhere and there wasn’t enough emotional development in the characters to really resolve anything???? The whole arcs with Olive and then Alix’s dad were crazy to me???
Honestly Ezra’s dad situation too!!! So much happened in such a short time that it didn’t feel organic or believable.

In case you didn't notice my updates exploding with my love for this comic... I loved this. It was absolutely spontaneous read, I'm not sure how it even appeared on my radar but I saw it and my brain went "want! want! want!" So I did the logical thing = dropped everything and started to read this. And omg, I absolutely didn't expect it to be this good!

I will try to not go into too many details in the review, because if you look at my updates, I updated about every three pages, so... if you want more details you could just read through those...

I recently read Pumpkinheads which Hicks illustrated. And while I didn't care for the story-line of Pumpkinheads I really did like the art... No shade to Rainbow Rowell intended here, I love some of her books, but the story here is so much better than in Pumpkinheads and...! I'm just so happy with this little story and I want more of the characters!

Okay, so what do we have here... a female hockey-enthusiast & player protagonist Alix with anger issues. Bisexual love interest theater kid with a queer clique and some issues of his own, though I think I'm going to leave those secret. As a bisexual, I really appreciated the bisexual portrayal here and I liked the role it played in the plot. (Also, just remembered now Ezra, actually doesn't use any label and is vocal about not wanting to use any label, so sorry for labeling him...)

Also, she is a little taller than him (and also way more buff) and I loved that! Honestly, the amazing bisexual thing happened to me here, where I had sort of crush on both of them and... living my best life! I really love how both of them were drawn - I would pick Alix if I had to, but... ugh... they were so cute! And the romance was great! And... oh, I can see we are returning to the gushing here... what can I say, one month was clearly not distance enough for writing this review...
description
Ezra was incredibly kind and respectful love interest and I was really into that. Although

Depiction of abuse is part of one of the backstories and I loved how that was handled - especially artistic-wise, I thought the visual aspects were great.

There was one trope I didn't love , but I think it was handled kind of well here and either way it's not a trope that ruins the romance for me.

I really loved the ending, it was an option that didn't cross my mind at all while reading, but that was carefully planted and actually made a lot of sense. And I also felt justified in

Also, I just realised... Usually when girl asks the boy to coach her in something - it's in dating, there is a different guy she wants to snatch. I really loved that she asked him to help with her anger issues instead? It's just... so much better! And it might sound a bit silly at first, but there is a great scene that really justifies her asking him. I mean, I would have asked to if I witnessed that...

Overall, I adored this, which makes this a hard book to recommend because I'm not sure I could handle people disliking it 😂 I guess I'm just keeping this one for myself!
No, really I thought it was really cute, if you like YA romance + comics + a feminist subversion here and there I think you might enjoy it. Don't tell me if you didn't! 🙈

Okay I'm not doing an actual full length review because this is not a full length novel. Yes, i agree that mangas/graphic novels are still books, but I prefer novels WAYY more. There is more time to get to know the character, you're in the characters head, where in graphic novels it feels like you're just surveying, things tend to be more rushed in a graphic novel, and I think I like imagining stuff in my head more. Now the actual book. I actually really enjoyed this one!! It was very cute. I liked how it was set in my province (CANADAAAA) and I also love hockey so it was cute. That's it, I would recommend!!

4.5? Was really not expecting that from what I saw on the cover! It is always the YA romance books where the girl plays hockey that surprise me… I wish it had delved deeper into some things they brought up but also it is a graphic novel and I don’t think that would’ve been possible in this medium. Throughly enjoyed!!!!

Angry girl loves drama boy to przeuroczy komiks zdecydowanie w stylu „Heartstoppera”.

This was an absolute delight to read! It was so refreshing to see a girl being the one in sports and a boy being the one in theatre. I loved getting to see Alix growing as a person and finding that she can actually stand up to her teammate/bully. I also really loved that Ezra was still figuring out his sexuality and didn’t want to put a label on it and just dated whoever he was interested in regardless of their gender. It was so nice to see rep for queer people who don’t want/need a label! I really enjoyed the way that Alix and Ezra became friends first and let their relationship develop into something more. Plus the way that Ezra was smiping after Alix was absolutely hilarious. Hockey Girl Loves Drama Boy was so much fun to read! It’s getting four stars from me. 😊

Really cute graphic novel about, well, a hockey girl who likes a drama boy at her high school.

I liked the story and the art both. Watching Alix get her first crush was so cute, and I liked how she finally found proper friends and community trough the theater people, and managed to stand up to her bully. Ezra was great as well, with his level head and likeable nature.

A note: I saw this in a rec for pan rep, but while Ezra likes boys and girls he's adament about not labelling himself and prefers to say he just "likes people"

I wasn't expecting to love this as much as I did! I love the way this novel pushes back on tropes and stereotypes and writes a really cute love story between a hockey player and theater kid. I love the way Alix and Ezra learn from one another and support each other. The art style was really fun to read as well!
