After graduating from Seikei University, he worked for a number of different advertising production companies and as a freelance copywriter. In 1997, he published his first novel, Ikebukuro West Gate Park, which won the 36th All Yomimono New Mystery Writer's Prize. In 2003, he won the Naoki Prize for 4-Teen.
His novels describe the culture of young people in Japan, particularly young women and otaku without a college education. Many of his works have been adapted for manga and television. As an actor, he made his first appearance in a leading role in the 2006 film Love My Life.
Ishida's pen name, Ishida Ira, was derived by splitting his real family name Ishidaira.

Ikebukuro West Gate Park (IWGP) volume 2 picks up right where volume one left off and wraps up the main storyline from volume one pretty fast. I'm actually surprised at the direction the story went because I was sort of assuming that the murder investigation was going to be the main storyline for this while series. A few characters seem to have moved on, it will be interesting to see of they come back considering what happens. The new arc involves Makoto and friends trying to help an old classmate that has fallen into some trouble with a drug dealer.
This volume is an improvement over the last, but I'm hesitant to give it 4 stars, perhaps 3.5 is more like it. it still has a balance of humor, drama, and even naughty material, but the balance is better here than volume 1. I plan to get volume 3 and see where this goes.

The tone of this volume is definitely more balanced than vol 1, but the content itself is less compelling to me. It starts in the middle of one story, and ends in the middle of another unrelated one, so it doesn't feel at all self-contained or whole. Also, the written-out accent thing gets more on my nerves every year except in very special circumstances. So, this one really wasn't much of anything to me, unfortunately.
