I am so glad I grabbed this while in the check-out line at Michael's.

As the magazine emphasizes often throughout, the research on cats is not nearly as fleshed out as that on dogs, and their history of domestication is also much shorter. There is so much still to be learned about these amazing fur balls and Secret Life of Cats is a great introduction for anyone who wants to learn more.

I appreciated that it as divided into several sections that focused on different topics, including proper care and nutrition, as well as the history of their domestication and their impact on human culture throughout time.

Since felines have a tendency to adopt us, our house always has at least one cat in residence. Although no two cats are alike, each having their own unique behaviors and personalities, I thought I knew a lot about cats in general. But as I read this delightfully informative book, I realized how little I actually knew about the secret life of cats. Each page revealed things I'd never known about this mysterious animal species, because cats like to keep their secrets to themselves!

Thoroughly researched and beautifully illustrated, this book covers the entire history of cats, from the first felids millions of years ago to the cats starring on the internet today. Human domestication of cats began around ten thousand years ago, in a Neolithic village in what is now Cyprus, and the human-feline bond has been unbreakable ever since (though stretched thin at times).

Beyond the history of domestication, this book contains a wealth of information about the modern cat: its characteristics, maturation from kitten to adult, and how it interacts with its world, including its social life and the human-cat bond. Scientists have documented that "people who live with cats were happier, less stressed, and better able to face life's problems than their feline-free counterparts." I wouldn't want to be without cats in my life, and I'm glad I read this book, which cleverly revealed parts of their secret lives. (Humans will never learn all of their secrets.)
