Psychotique

Rate this book

Powerful story of one man's experience with mental illness and hospitalization. It was so engaging, both narratively and visually and the author/illustrator combo was a match made in heaven. I really felt like I was wandering the streets, riding the train with him and his shadows in the middle of an episode.

This is not a fun book (though I wouldn't say depressing or defeatist), and not easy either. I can usually read a graphic novel quickly (even in French) but this took a few days to handle. Some might find the disjointed timeline irritating but it seems quite relevant to the subject. Ditto for Jacques' personality: he's not the most likable person (his relationships/treatment of women leave something to be desired at best) but somehow that's secondary to the experience.

Not sure how I had the courage to read this with a loved one currently in psychiatric care, but what's interesting is that even though each person/their mental illness/ is unique, there are some universal experiences- other patient "types", the staff, the routine of the hospital.

The first 2/3 of this book were 5*++, but as we drew towards the end it lost a bit of steam. I just didn't care for the parts about writing the book, getting published, CNL financing etc. That being said, thank goodness for the publisher La Boîte à bulles and the CNL, because without them, this wouldn't have been published!
