I'm not sure if this is fiction, but it's definitely inspired by real life. A really heartwarming and heartwrenching book at the same time. Some parts were hard to read because you wish the characters made different choices but it feels so real too. I love that this book is written by an author whose family was from quanzhou and it explained so much of the beliefs that my ancestors would have and the journey that may have taken to move out of China and to Malaysia. Feels unreal to to even have a peek into how that may be like for my great great great grandparents. A really captivating book.
One problem I often have with stories like this one is that they often glorify generational trauma. The dynamic of it in this book was interesting and possibly unintentional, meaning when the narrator was young, the story treated generational trauma as pain and unfairness; after the narrator grew old, (the manifestations of) generational trauma was coated in all kinds of positive connotation and endearment.
