“Greg Pruett is a man of absolute integrity and faith; a modern-day Elijah. . . . His passion is contagious. You will love his heart, his words, and his wisdom." Max Lucado

"What if you [knew for sure that you] could hear God speaking? What difference would that make in your life?" This is the teaser question (slightly edited by me) that the marketing flyer for this book starts with. I added the words "knew for sure that you" before could hear form God. I added those because I find that most people believe (in theory) that God speaks, especially in special circumstances, and especially to His choice servants, like Billy Graham and others who have a special admittance to His courts. But this book isn't about God's ability to speak to His people. It's about our ability to hear Him, an ability that all Christian believers have, but most have remained ignorant of, or have explained away into oblivion, to their own hurt.

The truth about God/. is that He reveals Himself to everyone, all the time, without exception. "The difference between God’s people and all other people scattered over the face of the earth is this: When God speaks, His people listen." (Again, a quote from the flyer). I believe, just from my personal experience, though, that a large percentage of God's People don't hear Him, don't listen even if they're pretty sure He's speaking to them, and relegate their lives to decisions made by their own wisdom, come what may, rather than living by God's tender, compassionate and direct guidance. That's why this book is so powerful.

Those who don't have any relationship to world mission circles won't likely know that Greg Pruett is the President of Pioneer Bible Translators. Like Max Lucado, who endorses him, Greg, and the mission he serves with, are part of the very conservative Church of Christ, an un-denominational group of Christian believers who hold strictly to the Scriptures as God's main way of guiding people and have a no-nonsense approach to things like spiritual gifts. His engineering background comes through in the first part of the book, as he builds a case, using the whole Bible as his knowledge base, for the fact that God's people are supposed to be hearing Him speak on a regular basis. This is not a philosophy book, like Dallas Willard's "Hearing God," which I loved, but found a bit out of reach for many of my friends and loved ones with whom I wanted to initiate a conversation about relating with God on a personal basis. Decidedly practical and relational in his approach, Pruett simply makes it look silly for any believer to attempt the Christian life without the guidance of God.

If you have been a believer for 40 years or just got saved yesterday, whether you're a workaday person who attends church or a missionary trying to extend the Kingdom of God, read this book.

Does God still talk to us today? Did he go silent now that we have His Word in Bible form? In this book Greg Pruett explains that God very much still speaks and in the many ways he does.
The information given in this book is biblically founded with references. Each chapter begins with a verse and contains a story, related information, and discussion questions. Some chapters come with additional learning tools like acronyms.
Pruett is a skilled story teller with plenty of interesting stories from the adventure God has sent him on. Pruett tells both his own stories and the stories of others that he has met. These stories tie in with what Pruett teaches and makes what he’s saying easy to relate to and understand.
This book is a great tool to help deepen your faith and to become a better listener. It can help with having better spiritual practices and deepening your relationship with God. I had so many “click” moments when reading this book where things just suddenly seemed to make more sense.
I highly recommend giving this book a read. I received a digital copy of this book for free in exchange for this honest review. I did also pay to preorder a copy for my father because I truly believe he will enjoy this book just as much as I did. You probably will too!

God will reveal himself in your life and use you for His mission. This book shows you how to implement the spiritual disciplines necessary to grow more intimately in relationship with Jesus.

If nothing else, read chapter 11 and apply it to your life! The church doesn’t talk/teach about spiritual warfare and demonic presence enough.

My biggest takeaway: more silent uninterrupted time in prayer.

BEST BOOK OF ALL TIMES OTHER THAN THE BIBLE

This book changed many parts of my life and made me much more serious about prayers, disciplines of life, and listening to God. This is a book you need to read yearly and after the first read, read it again within 6 months. I am not a guy who rereads books, this one is a must read!

not bad

This book has great information, but lots of it is found in other Christian books. I like reading Christian books that are outside the norm for popular Christian books and I thought this would be one of them. It was good, but not as good as I had expected.

An amazing book about how YOU can hear God's voice and be involved in God's mission! Worthwhile to read on your own or with a small group. I'm even preparing a summary of it to teach my Sunday School class this week.

Greg has such a way with anecdotes! He really takes Jesus's example of communicating deep Kingdom truths in relatable, bite-size stories to heart. The Lord saved Chapter 13 for the time when I needed it most 😂. Implementing extraordinary hearing into my quiet time as we speak.

Very good. I listened to the audio and was a little bummed because if it was a physical book I think I would have marked my copy up.

There is always 1% of a book that will change your life. The 1% gathered from this read is having a quiet soul during prayer and learning how to listen to God. Many thoughts can come up through your prayer life. I normally would dismiss many of them and continue onto what I wanted to talk about with God. Greg proposes the idea some of those thoughts are from the Holy Spirit pointing us toward what we should bring up. This has greatly aided me in having a conversation with the Lord!

Next to the Bible this may be the most important book I have ever read. Even in the reading of it, it changed some of my thinking about life. It opened doors to hearing from God, reflected on what God wants from us. Upon completion of this book you should reread it within 6 months and then every years until Jesus returns. It will prepare you for that day.
