Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie, Vol. 13 (My Kindle Review)
The gang’s class has a special lunch to celebrate the end of their sophomore year, and Izumi makes it an emotional experience while we see the lovebirds on a spring trip to the mountains with his parents. Their junior year is here and despite some being in different classes, the gang still have time together by having a friendly volleyball game while Shikimori becomes part of the school’s morals committee. A (100%/Outstanding)
It’s the end of second year and time to celebrate, just in time for the gang to start sweating where they’ll be assigned in third year. As some friends move on, the chance for new ones emerges, or maybe just old faces in a fresh light.
Oh ho ho, clever clever. I really like the decision to attempt to integrate Kamiya into the core cast via the class change; she’s really been a fun addition who deserved better than being shuffled into the rival role and forgotten and I’m glad to see the mangaka agreed. Her perspective on these weirdos is an amusing dash of reality.
And I might miss my mark, but it sure looks like Kamiya has a type and, with Izumi unavailable for the rest of his life, Saruogi might get the chance to be hapless and shy with the coolest girl in school. It’s early doors, but that potential development is fun to watch as it emerges.
These kids are such a satisfying friend group to hang out with; it’s no wonder that Izumi is moved to tears at the end of term. Even his other classmates are used to his incredible bad luck, which is good because he has some bangers this time out. Yeah, it’s slice-of-life, but that’s some really amazing bread they’re cutting into.
Between Shikimori being more flustered than usual, the deep love between our leads, the joy of good friends (the lunch they drag Kamiya into is very funny), and the general weirdness of Hachimitsu being stranger than ever, it’s a really wholesome, if unremarkable, volume.
Still, gimme high quality unremarkable any time. This may not stand out, but it’s still a treat from beginning to mostly the end, where it might go a bit TOO wholesome with Shikimori taking on the role of the morals officer.
It starts innocently enough - Shikimori learns fast that asking students to behave is hard enough, but asking your friends to do it is nigh impossible. And, to be fair, this is one of those dress code things that never makes much sense to me as it’s more about crushing individuality and being a prude about skirt length (I know it’s more nuanced than that, but just saying).
Ahem, anyway, it’s reflective of both the school system and the series so I can let it go enough, though it does make for a weird story line. Shikimori comes up against a first year who won’t listen to her, but already knows her name. Yes, with no hint of this beforehand, the secret history of Shikimori is apparently about to be revealed.
It’s an interesting idea and certainly one way to explore things, but it would have been nice had it ever been suggested at any point beforehand. Otherwise it comes across as trying to generate fresh drama from nowhere. I’m not against it, I recognize manga operates at a pace you could charitably call frantic, but elegant it is not.
Still, I have underestimated this series before at my peril and do not intend to make that mistake for a second time, especially with how much I have come to enjoy it since then. It gets the benefit of the doubt, especially with the strong writing that’s everywhere else in this volume, but cautiously so.
4 stars - I do have this sinking feeling that the story is about to shame Shikimori for daring to have been an individual during middle school and while I hope I am wrong, I don’t intend to give it the usual five stars until I see where it goes. Everything else is up to the usual high standard though, so there’s that at least.

Hello everyone, dear readers 🌸
Today I bring you the review of the thirteenth volume of «Shikimori». That said, let's get started:
💕The volume begins with an epilogue of the first year of high school, where the group enjoys an all-you-can-eat barbecue buffet, revealing Izumi's bad luck and Shikimori's jealousy. The action culminates when Izumi shares his school nostalgia with his friends. After this catharsis, the author highlights Shikimori's good vibes for the last school year.
💕As an introduction to the upcoming school year, the story features a family picnic where Shikimori, feeling unwell, interrupts the trip. Even more importantly, the couple begins to question their future professional and personal paths after Izumi's parents express their concerns.
The preparations continue with reunions and reactions from the group regarding the new school year, classes, and their implications, providing humorous scenes and iconic moments, such as Kamiya's continued beauty that stands out among the girls.
💕In the last third of the manga, the story prepares for a new arc. After the protagonist's bad luck with exams, Shikimori lightens the mood with her usual tenderness before the academic results are announced.
Then, the plot takes us to the assignment of roles at school, where Shikimori decides to become in charge of the disciplinary committee. Although she knows it will be a challenge, her encounter with Risa Hayase, a rebellious first-year student who challenges dress code rules, immediately sparks her interest.
This attitude inspires Shikimori to question her motives, reflecting her critical and free-spirited nature.
🌸Conclusion: This volume marks a turning point in the series and hints at a prolonged ending for the school phase. The arrival of Miss Hayase suggests a key development for Shikimori, who faces the tension between empathy and responsibilities.
idk what it was about this volume, but everything just worked for me. the sweet and poignant feelings of a school year ending and a new, exciting-but-uncertain future looming was portrayed so perfectly. I'm really glad to see more of kamiya, and not just as a rival to shikimori but as a friend who fits pretty well into their little group. also, there was SO much nekozaki and hachimitsu cuteness in here, including a bonus chapter about how they first met. I love them so dang much!!
