La verda koro de Julio Baghy sen ajna dubo estas la plej konata instrua legolibro Esperanta, kaj ĝi aperis en multaj reeldonoj. Laŭ sia subtitolo ĝi estas "facila romaneto el la vivo de esperantistoj en Siberio", kaj ĝi do baziĝas sur la samaj spertoj de la aŭtoro kiel liaj grandaj romanoj Viktimoj (1925) kaj Sur sanga tero (1933). Ĝia rakonta fadeno ankaŭ enhavas multajn el la ingrediencoj de tiu duopo, tamen en aliaj proporcioj. En La verda koro ĉefrolas Esperanto, la instruado kaj lernado de Esperanto, kaj la ideoj kaj emocioj ligitaj al Esperanto. Krom tio ni tamen ricevas ankaŭ interesajn priskribojn de homoj kaj medioj, dramajn historiajn eventojn el la interna milito en orienta Siberio en 1918-1920, kaj kompreneble amhistoriojn kun obstakloj. Kiel ĉiam ĉe Baghy, temas pri platona amo inter la alia memo de la aŭtoro - ĉi-verke la Esperanto-instruanta hungara militkaptito Nadai - kaj loka junulino. Pro nediritaj kialoj tiu amo ne povas plenumiĝi.

A charming little novella by one of the most celebrated Esperanto authors aimed at post-beginner Esperanto learners. It's a lightly graded reader that attempts to impart to the reader some feeling of the "interna ideo" of Esperanto through the lives of prisoners of war in Siberia. The story is inspired by Baghy's lived experience, which he also uses as inspiration for his two novels, Viktimoj and Sur Sanga Tero.
Worth reading if you are interested in Baghy or the war experiences of that period of history. I wouldn't recommend it as a graded reader though. Not because it is unsuitable for the purpose, but because I don't think it would appeal to most people.

Mi legas tiun rakoneton lastjaro. Mi trovis ĝin tre interesa. La karakteroj estas tre malsimilaj sed povas grupiĝi per komunan deziron.

I'm not interested in the (early) political aspirations of Esperanto becoming the international language of peace and understanding in whose spirit this short book was written (in 1937) although this makes it somewhat interesting to read from a historical perspective.
However, I was mainly annoyed by the absence of any clear plot and the unsuccessful attempt at progressively using more complex language. Baghy merely strings together several anecdotes of a community of Esperantists in a Siberian POW camp during WW1 - an experience that he shared as well. I don't think it is very useful as a graded reader either. As an intermediate learner, the beginning was far too simple and boring and I can imagine that beginners would have difficulties with later parts. The grading was mainly one big jump from chapter 8 to 9, when the previous dull and basic sentences were replaced with somewhat more varied language.
