Everything can change in a single moment… With a conversation. With an accident.
Months of being torn between Duke and Knight, being loved and being hated, and I thought we finally caught a break. I knew that the three of us together could heal and be happy again. I had a second of glittering hope.
But I should have known better. Hope is a backstabbing bitch.
Life comes crashing down around us and it’s on me to stop it. My dreams of escaping and going away to college are nothing but distant thoughts now. I have more important things to worry about.
How to fight back without risking my life. How to save Duke and Knight when every breath they take is relying on me falling in line. How to drag my father down to hell where he belongs.
I’ll do whatever it takes to secure a safe future for everyone I love. Even if I don’t recognize myself when this is all over.
*Part two of a duet. Must be read in order. This is a MFM, stepbrother romance with mature themes that may be difficult for some readers. Please check full trigger warning page before deciding if this book is right for you.*
…I forgot how angsty HS romances can be though, my goodness that was a ride 😂. Remi (FMC) really came into her own in this book, we got to see her become independent and stronger than ever. There were times she, and her beaus, acted irrationally and dramatically, and I wanted to scoff, but then I remembered they’re all in high school and 17 😆.
Duke, one of the MMCs, was dealing with the aftermath of his SA. I really appreciated that we saw a male SA survivor being represented, respectfully too.
Knight, the other MMC, made me love him so much. He matured and was way less of an asshole here than in the first, finally coming to his senses and opening his eyes to the world around him. He was selfless even, which I thought was the perfect character arc. Kinda excited to see if Atlas, Maddox, Ellie, or Rhett get a story in the future.
I do think the plot was OTT, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it was one thing after another, you couldn’t really catch your breath. Some of the plot points were wrapped up too quickly or abruptly after a lengthy amount of time emotionally wrecking us lol.
The writing was fabulous once again, I will be reading whatever Ebony Brewer publishes.
When they say check the trigger warnings, you definitely need to do that for this.
I thought the first book was going to be the tip, but this was just crazy.
The revelation at the end of the first book made my stomach turn, but all of the hard-hitting truths and just plain evilness. I was super nauseated with everything her father has been doing, and I’m just glad that everything turned out the way it was.
I do kind of wish that the characters got therapy, but this is fiction.
This is book 2 in the Lies & Secrets Duet, so if you have not read book 1 please do so to understand the story. With that being said let’s dive in ( I won’t be telling you what the book is about-that’s what the blurb is for 🤣)!
Holy cheese on a freaking cracker…Ebony Brewer you killed it with this AMAZING book! I don’t think I have ever cried or screamed soo much at a book before! This book has some pretty dark content (so please check TW) but damn, I was gripped from beginning to end. I had to take a couple breaks when things were getting intense, my watch was even telling me it was time to breathe 🙃!
The things that our main characters and even side characters went through broke a little part of me but it was all worth it in the end! Everyone got the ending they really deserved 🥰!
The intro to new characters (that will be getting their own story) has me very VERY excited and a tiny bit scared 😅.
Ebony Brewer I can’t wait to see what’s next 🖤.
* I received an ARC from the author, and this is my honest review.
**This book is Multi POV and is written in first person perspective.
SYNOPSIS (of Duet): The FC, Remi, has a romantic summer with a boy and gives up her virginity to him only to be ghosted straight after. A year passes and her abusive father gets engaged to her Ex‘s mother and he and his twin, who hates her, move in with her and her father. There is a mystery running in the background and you get snippets dropped through Book 1 with the „big reveal“ towards the end of Book 1. Book 1 covers how the FC gets back with her ex and also falls for his twin as well as revealing the nightmare through which she has lived. Book 2 sees the nightmare that has envelopped the FC and MCs lives play out and ultimately a HEA.
Heat level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️/🍆🍆 - The sex scenes are relatively hot and not badly written and there‘s a few of them but not too many. However this author does suffer from what some other authors do which is inappropriate sex scenes - just been whipped so you cannot stand? Let‘s engage in some sex. Just been almost raped & murdered and badly injured? Let‘s have a big sex scene 🤔 That‘s not hot it‘s laughable.
The story is unoriginal and there are a few editing and typo issues which are annoying. That would not have been a big deal if the writing had been engaging or the characters strong and likeable. Remi was yet another girl who the 2 MCs find beautiful, kind, caring etc. despite there being no evidence of this other than the author telling us this is the case. In the story she simply comes across as weak and stupid. She does not try to fight back against her father or stand up for herself. There is the obligatory bad boy who does the bullying (for what turns out to be ridiculous reasons despite having loved her for years) and the caring loving Ex. Neither MC felt original and they also both came across as quite weak. There was no background development and the FC/MCs relationships just simply were, they didn‘t really grow or develop.
The underlying plot was just frustrating and, whilst books are supposed to have a degree of fantasy this story contained too much suspension of belief and manufactured plot lines. The reality is that, as mentioned by many reviewers, the villain would have been reported to the police long before things got to where they did so the story was fundamentally flawed. I found the climax to be too unrealistic. The author just disregarded the reality that of course the police would be allowed to go into a house if they believed someone was in danger and not wait days for a warrant, or that a confession is not coerced if given up freely when a person is gloatingly describing what they have done or that you cannot simply keep a person tied up for endless days while you have movie nights and go away for a camping weekend (🙄) without someone asking questions especially if you have already spoken to the police….These just seemed a lazy way of trying to introduce more drama but came across as bizarre only for things to suddenly come to a head with no real explanation. I found the ending very frustrating.
The description of what the villain was doing I also felt treated a very serious subject without the sensitivity with which it should have been. It’s one thing to use this type of serious issue as a plot line but then deal with it properly and take it as seriously as it should be taken. Show respect to those that suffer this type of abuse. This author, as many authors seem to do, clearly just decided she wanted to introduce drama and angst to her story and did no research on the issue. Also, for the love of God, if you are going to have your characters beaten or hurt then don‘t have them jumping around the next minute or having sex. So many authors do this simply to introduce drama and without following through on the real consequences. If you have just been whipped with a belt until your legs give way and slapped across the face I am pretty sure that sitting down or getting off are not going to be high on your agenda.
There were a lot of clunky (or lazy) plot mechanisms such as the introduction of Remi’s friend Sara - clearly just an attempt by the author to create more drama when actually it just accentuated how stupid the FC was and also treated yet another serious issue - date rape - without any of the care it deserves. No one with any sense would have given Sara a second chance. The plot line around the MCs mother is again, clunky - of course the villain is going to suspect something and there were better ways for the mother to bring the villain to justice - as is the introduction of the boarding school which is clearly inserted to bring yet more drama but just comes across as out of the blue and over the top. Whilst you get a brief reference to the others from the boarding school at the end of Book 2, once the boys have returned home you hear no reference to it again nor do you get the impression anyone tries to help those left there.
In summary this duet was not for me and nor is this author. Too many unoriginal and manufactured plot lines and unengaging characters.

Remi and knight were in a car crash and wake up in the hospital. Remi remembers what she discovered about her dad, Charles. When they get out of the hospital, Rose still plans to go forward with the wedding to Charles, but she lets Remi know she had a plan. At the wedding, Charles introduces Remi to Benjamin, the man he has sold her to for marriage. He states she’ll be married to him the day after her 18th birthday. After the wedding, Charles sends Knight and Duke to a private boarding school which actually has been known to “dispose” of trouble makers. He gets away with this by drugging Rose and locking her in the room. He forces Remi to go to Benjamin’s house on the weekends. Remi records Benjamin saying the things he’d do to her and that she’s underage and he’s forcing her into marriage and she sent the recording to his share holders who fire him. He shows up at school and takes her out saying that she’s to be home schooled from now on and is moving in with Benjamin. She had hidden cameras in her father’s office and they caught that on camera so her friend George told the police who showed up as Benjamin was trying to kill Remi and ended up shooting him and resuscitating Remi. With nowhere to go she goes to the boarding school to rescue Duke and Knight and she does. They go back to the house to save Rose only to run into Charles. The fight him and tie him to a chair where he confesses to killing the twins father and to assaulting all the boys at the school. Remi gets it on tape, but the police can’t use it because he was under duress. However, when Rose hears him taunting how he killed her husband she shoots and kills him. The three of them recover. Rose goes to jail for four years, and the twins and Remi live HEA.
We revisit the lives of Remi, Knight and Duke. These kids go through so much and with their hands tied, bidding time to pass for the right opportunity - even I got frustrated. There's more insight on certain actions of characters from book 1 that makes sense now. I had been harsh to judge soon.
The layers in this dark story just kept peeling off as I had turned the pages. Manipulation, scheming, blackmailing with love and trust anchoring the trio through the harsh storms.
Kudos for Charles. As an antagonist, as hateable he is, he's well written. Realistic. Abusers are pillars of the community, they are liked by all but only the victims know their true face. He's one like that.
Remi, I was rooting for you girl and you have made it. Finally got your happy ending, with your boys getting their own, even if it wasn't the best possible one.
If it wasn't obvious, I cried. I needed that. Thank you Ebony, for writing such beautiful characters.

This book is Part II book I is Charming Cruel Boys
"The abused, scared Remi is dead. Whoever it is I’m becoming now is angry , depraved, and planning to steal back the future I deserve, no matter what the cost."
I absolutely loved this story. Remi, Duke, and Knight have gone through so much and just when you think it can't get any worse it does, but they all fight to get the outcome they want, to be together and go to college far away. At one point this book had me in tears over what was going on with Remi but she was strong and pulled through. It ends with a HEA and the way the story is written there will be another book with some of the side characters so hopefully we will hear from these three again.
Wow, wow, wow. This is the last book in the Duet. If you thought 1st book was dark then you're in for a shock. This was worse. But I'm a sucker for all things dark. There are plenty of triggers so please check them before you read. The story continues from the accident In Cruel Charming boys.
The truth comes to light about Charles. But the torture Continues. It was so heartbreaking to see what they all indure including Rose, the boys mum. Charles is cruel and evil. He also sells Remy to an equally cruel man. There were times I had to take a breather. They do get their HEA but it is at a very high cost. There was just right amount of spice too. You need to read it and find out as I don't want to spoil it for you. Well Ebony has well and truly sucked me in to her world through her amazing writing skills. I felt all the emotions through her writing.
Finally the epic conclusion of this stepbrothers why choose romance!
Wow this book is slightly darker and way more action packed than book one, if you can believe that. It will pick right back up where book one ended and new and crazy madness starts happening.
Remi and her guys (Knight and Duke) have been put through the ringer in this book. Secrets and lies are just flying all around. Charles is the absolute worst especially in this book you actually get to see how devious he really is. So if you any type of sensitivities make sure you check the TW on this book first.
If you want dark, why choose, action packed chaos, suspense, and spice this is your book. The author gave a epic conclusion on this one and you get a little insight to what will be coming next at the end. Definitely recommend for any reader who wants the spicy why choose with suspense.
Gosh this finale had me so on edge I wanted to take my hair out piece by piece. But it was such a good on edge feeling. This story evolved into something so beautiful and tragic but seriously it made everything so much better.
Knight and Duke’s story was so heartbreaking and truly made my heart hurt sometimes. Remi’s wasn’t any better and I felt so bad for her. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.
The love the 🌶️ all of it was so worth the end to their story and truly made the read worthwhile. This has so many twists and turns and it kept me reading I couldn’t put this book down.
I had so many hopes and anticipation for this book! I absolutely loved book one which you must read to understand where the characters are at for this book. Without giving any spoilers, I loved the development and growth of all three characters but that they also seemed to stay true to themselves. So often in stories the characters change into these completely different people to fit the story and that was not done here and I loved it! The topics and some scenes are very dark and heavy so please check trigger warnings on both books before reading. The Ashbury Twins will forever have a piece of my heart! As always Ebony Brewer did an outstanding job!
The story had to continue.... I mean, where are the Boys? Will Remi be a slave to a man she was sold to? What happened to Rose? Would they get their happily ever after? Will Charles get what is coming to him? This book will answer those questions for sure! The emotional roller coaster it takes to get to those answers will keep you turning the pages and thirsting for more. I fell in love with these twins just like Remi did. The yin and yang of what every girl wants in a man, but she gets to have two! You will love their continued story for sure.
I did enjoy this conclusion. Yes, it had some dark moments and cringe-worthy, reading through your fingers moments (ahem; Benjamin, ick), but the happy ever after was there, which is what we all ultimately want! I did find the situation/story, as a whole, quite frustrating due to them all allowing Charles to get away with everything and not once going to the police. So I lost a little bit of passion for the story through that but I still enjoyed the duet.
I couldn’t open this one fast enough after finishing the first one (Charming Cruel Boys). Trigger warnings, lots of them. Practically any you can think of they’re in here. Ebony wrote it so well though and the way it flowed was amazing. The only part that sometimes confused me is that the three main characters are high school students - so in retrospect everything that happens is a lot for high school and often I forgot and thought that they were older. I’m looking forward to starting another one by Brewer!
This duet was so amazing and also so difficult sometimes. This particular book was one of the hardest things I've read in a bit. I said in the first book that Charles needed to ☠️ and I didn't think I'd get that for a while. I had to put it down for a bit and get back into it praying that the family would get justice. In the end, I got what I wanted but it felt like it took so long to get there (it was necessary, I know). Anyways, I'm excited to hear more about Eleanora and the boys in the future because I definitely wanted more about them here. Highly recommend but check triggers first!

What a ride! The suspense, action, trauma, and emotional devastation could not have been more delicious. Loved this conclusion, I could have read more books on these three and their journey but I’m glad it was a duet. It ends it on a high note and leaves you craving more from this author in general. Beautifully done, realistic in its trauma responses, healing, and emotional journeys. This author is most definitely an instant download now!
His transformation from the first book is absolutely amazing! After saying that this book wasn’t my favorite of the two. The end seemed a bit rushed and I had hope Charles death was more gruesome than that because of such a vermin he was!
My heart broke for Duke, Knight and Remi their trauma they had to endure it’s unthinkable!
Overall this duet I would rate a solid 4! It had good spice and the story of healing is what makes it memorable 🫶

This series was amazing. I was hooked from the get go. I loved Duke and Knight and how they were twins but completely different from eachother. The relationship between the boys and their girl was great I loved the way we saw them grow and change together. The spice was very good. I would definitely recommend. Unfortunately it had to loose a star because everything could have been avoided if these characters just phoned the police on a number of occasions. I would 100% read more by this author
I loved this book as much as the first. Knight and Duke grow so much in this story, even Rose surprised me with her arc. Remi is still as head strong as ever and I loved every line. I’m sad to see the story finished but also glad they got their HEA. I’m secretly hoping there is another series coming with Atlas and Ellie and the other two that survived Elliot Huxley so fingers crossed!🤞🏼
Not suitable for everyone! Check your TWs. Love love these three! Gosh the things they went through. The twists the turns. The little happy moments were great to read about! A topic that needs to be wrote about more and talked about! Such a beautiful story told by this author. Loved the spice. A nice duet with a HEA.
Well that was a rollercoaster ride and a half!! Ohhh the way I wanted to jump into the book and punch a couple of people 😆 If a book can make me that angry and make me go through all the emotions then it's a winner in my eyes! That was A LOT... it all just kept happening and I couldn't tear my eyes away from the book 🥰
This is book two in the Lies & Secrets duet and wraps up the story of Remi, Duke, and Knight. Remi's father is definitely the enemy and his sinister plan is to sell Remi off as soon as she turns eighteen. Duke and Knight will do everything they can to protect her but Remi's father always seems to be one step ahead. Can they beat him at his own game??
I loved how real this book was! The author didn’t shy away from tough topics and I appreciate that. Love is not all sunshine and roses. The three main characters of this duet are strong and determined. I’m really looking forward to seeing more from this author.
General mfm is not something I quite read, but the story had me intrigued, this is full of triggers so be mindful of it. I liked reading about these characters and how they matured from it
Good story Not enough happy moments Those painful to read scenerios where the mmc is being mean to the fmc because her dad is blackmailing her Attempted rape on the other mmc
The second book also makes the mmcs seem like little bad boys as thet are shipped off to a school for bad kids
