Two Sisters. One Single Event. A Family Changed Forever.

At the turn of the twentieth century, sisters Emmy and Callie Bullock are living a privileged life as the only daughters of a wealthy Alabama cotton farmer when their well-ordered household gets turned upside down by the arrival of Lily McGee. Arrestingly beautiful, Lily quickly--and innocently--draws the wrong kind of attention. Meanwhile, Callie meets a man who offers her the freedom to abandon social constraints and discover her truest self.

After Lily has a baby, Callie witnesses something she was never meant to see--or did she? Her memory is a haze, just an image in her mind of Emmy standing on a darkened riverbank and cradling Lily's missing baby girl. Only when the sisters are separated does the truth slowly come to light through their letters--including a revelation that will shape the rest of Callie's life.

Bestselling author Valerie Fraser Luesse weaves a complex and suspenseful tale dripping with intrigue, romance, and Southern charm.

Wow, all I can say is, LETTERS FROM MY SISTER blew me away! Be prepared to go on an emotional roller coaster ride like you have never experienced before. I want everyone I know to read this heart tugging story! This beautiful story takes place in Alabama in 1911. Callie and Emmy are sisters, as different as night and day, but the very best of friends. Two families, one black, one white, who rely on each other through thick and thin and are always there for each other no matter what! I just loved this story so much, not to mention how beautiful the cover is!

Valerie Fraser Luesse sure knows how to make the reader feel as if they are right there at the cotton fields with the family dealing with all their troubles and LETTERS FROM MY SISTER is exactly that! She made me sad, then the next moment I was smiling and giggling out loud! You can never go wrong with a Valerie Fraser Luesse book if you are a fan of the Christian fiction genre. All of her characters feel genuine and relatable and put your emotions on one heck of a roller coaster ride. As you are reading, you will find yourself praying that they can work out their problems and you will also wonder how much heartache a family can stand before it completely breaks down and splits.

LETTERS FROM MY SISTER is a heart tugging story filled with grief, heartbreak, and love that will hold you hostage until the very last page. Once I started this emotional story, it was very hard to put down! The Bullock family is so wonderful and giving, but Hepsy and her family are just as amazing. Oh, as a warning to the reader, keep the tissues handy and do not read the ending in a public place unless you don’t mind crying in front of strangers! I’m so excited to continue catching up on all of Valerie’s previous books.

Along with the heartbreak there is also hope, faith and healing. I felt so close to the whole family as I finished up LETTERS FROM MY SISTER and really didn’t want the book to end. It was wonderful watching the sisters change and grow in ways I never expected. Valerie is an excellent story teller and she gets you so caught up in their lives right from the very first page and never lets you go. This is a book that will stay with me for a very long time!

LETTERS FROM MY SISTER is all about family and the past and the secrets that come out are heart tugging. It had me flipping through the pages like a woman on a mission. I had to know what was going to happen to Callie and Emmy and all the secondary characters. The characters are all well written and totally believable. LETTERS FROM MY SISTER is without a doubt one of the best books I’ve read in 2023 so far. I was instantly emotionally invested in all of the characters. My heart broke for Callie as well as Emmy and for all they were dealing with.

Valerie Fraser Luesse really knows how to write about family drama, heartbreak, and forgiveness. I can not wait to read more by this wonderful and heart tugging author.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Reveal Reads. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

There was something about this book that completely captured my heart. The storytelling aspect reminded me so much of novels I used to devour and re-read when I was in my teens. Books written in the 1800’s and 1900’s with stories that have nothing and everything happening at the same time. The cadence of the story just had a sweetness to it that spoke of nostalgia and memories untwining like leaves blossoming in the sun.

It was such a refreshing read to have a book take place in the south without all of the chaotic race-baiting and to show a family without prejudice similar to some that exist, but seem to have been nearly completely left out of fiction. I loved the depiction of a family that loved all people and raised their children in the ways of the Lord and family. I will say, the large family and lots of siblings trope was one of my favorite parts of this book as it was something that I could relate to and find is unusual to find in fiction.

The mystery had me on the edge of my seat and this was the first book in a long while to keep me up late to finish it. Did I read until one in the morning just to have the story completed? Yes, yes I did.

The romance was sweet, innocent and adorable and one I didn’t just highly enjoyed, but that I hope one day to emulate. It’s a treasure to find a romance where the characters are respectful to each other, love each other truly and are focused on commitment and honoring the other person and we need more fiction that models this.

There were some tough topics handled in this book so while I found it clean in the romance aspect, I would recommend it for adults or those that don’t mind topics such as racism, abuse, and murder being mentioned or discussed. Nothing was gratuitous in anyway and I found the story told very tastefully.

Highly recommend it if you love gentle stories, historical settings in the south and soft romance.

Disclosure: I received this book free from the publisher/author. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a positive review. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Callie was a sympathetic character with a fun personality. I also enjoyed the side characters.

From reading the description, I assumed this story would feature more of a mystery, but the mystery didn't come into play until well into the book. I appreciated that Valerie Fraser Luesse kept both the romance and language clean. I wasn't a fan of the whole vision/seer aspect of the plot though.

Overall, Letters from My Sister was an entertaining read that I'd recommend to those who enjoy Christian fiction and historical novels.

Deep South fiction is not my favorite genre. It takes a lot of talent and a light touch on the melodrama to sufficiently draw me into such a book and keep my interest throughout—even more so to wow me into granting a Deep South book five stars.

This author did all that and more with Letters from My Sister.

Mrs. Luesse’s author voice tugged me in swiftly, and as the family dynamics unfolded and the mystery deepened, I found myself so riveted that the melodrama felt juicy and inviting rather than annoying.

I was surprised that the letters didn’t come into play until well past the halfway mark (57%), but there were plenty of other things I enjoyed about the story that I only began wondering about the letters a few chapters prior to their appearance.

Things I loved were the tone, characters, family aspect, that the servants were beloved like family, that sisters were featured, and that the mystery involved amnesia. So many favorite things all in one place! There was so much to love about this story, and I hardly have the words to do them justice.

Letters from My Sister

I think this might be the best book I have read so far this year. It is such a gentle read, I cannot think of another way to describe it. It just flows along and around you in such a peaceful way. The story is about a family, in particular, two sisters who are so close and so gentle with each other it was lovely to read. I loved all of the characters, the mother, the father, the boyfriends, and everyone in the family.

The book is set in farming Alabama in the early part of the 1900s. While free, Blacks and women are still treated as second-class citizens by many and beloved members of families by others. The story weaved a spell on me and I could not put it down. The story entranced me.

It was a great read.

1911 Alabama

Valerie Fraser Luesse' novels are engaging and include family tension. Letters From My Sister fits right in line.

The two main characters are young adult sisters from a wealthy family. Emmy and Callie are incredibly different yet the best of friends. Emma thrives on socializing while Callie would rather climb a tree exploring nature. Each find love. Unfortunately, the twin of Emma's fiance stirs up nothing but trouble.

The tale unwinds slowly. My favorite part of this novel was the romance between Callie and Solomon. And the cover is lovely.

My gratitude to publisher Revell for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

Letters from My Sister is an enjoyable slow burn Southern historical mystery/romance. It’s my first book by Valerie Fraser Luesse and I look forward to reading more. Set in turn of the 20th century Alabama, two sisters share everything from first loves to secrets. Though opposite in many ways, their love for each other forges an unbreakable bond. When trouble comes in the form of a new house guest, the sisters’ lives are forever changed. It’s the story of love, loss, family, murder, amnesia, and a touch of faith.

I thoroughly became engrossed in the Bullock sisters’ story which is loosely based on the author’s own relatives. Callie and Emmy were both likable characters who tugged on my heart strings. Despite it being the early 1900’s South, this close knit, wealthy family treats their African American workers like family.

Emmy is engaged to Knox Montgomery and looking forward to their wedding day. While Emmy enjoys socializing, Callie would much rather climb her tree and go on secret raccoon hunts with her father. Her life is changed though when new neighbor, Solomon Beckett bought the nearby home she’s always admired.

The trouble starts when their housekeeper Hepsy’s granddaughter Lily comes to stay. Lily is gorgeous, and unfortunately attracts the attention of Ryder Montgomery, the very married brother of Emmy’s fiancé. The mystery involves something Callie witnesses that she can’t remember due to a blow to the head. The tension and mystery build as she tries to recall what happened that fateful night.

Along with the endearing Bullock family, I loved Hepsy and her family. Hepsy and her daughter have the gift of sight and I loved how it was portrayed in the story. I also enjoyed the romance between Solomon & Callie. I loved the part where he finds her up in the tree with her petticoat flying. Their love story provided some light, humorous, romantic moments to balance the heavier ones. The title is slightly misleading as the letters don’t appear until well after the halfway mark. However, the letters provide crucial clues to the mystery.

It’s a well written, slow burn mystery/romance, women’s and historical fiction fans will enjoy. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided.

This is my first novel by Valerie Fraser Luesse. LETTERS FROM MY SISTER is a compelling title, but it was not what I thought it would be. The southern historical romance is really a coming-of-age story of privileged sisters, Callie and Emily that learn with privilege comes responsibility.

Emmy wants the typical life of a wife and mother with the man of her dreams, Knox. Callie is restless and not sure what she wants. She sees the injustice around her and feels helpless to do anything about it.

The story winds and turns in unexpected ways that kept me turning pages well into the night. There’s mystery and murder—all shifting my expectations into a desire to better understand the themes of this story. Beautiful. Unexpected. Well worth every minute.

Highly recommend for those who are looking for more than a historical romance, but a mystery and message.

The title to this one is misleading. I figured it would be epistolary - it is not. OK. The premise caught my attention, so I decided to read it. Two sisters and four brothers. The focus of the story is on the relationship between Emmy and Callie.

I kept waiting for the letters to play into the narrative - it took a while to get to those letters and there were very few of them. There is something of a mystery in the book, but I felt it added little to the plot. The more interesting story is about Callie and how she is determining what kind of life she would like to live.

I read to the end, but it was a big let down. Still, the writing was interesting enough that I made it to the end.

The beautiful cover drew me to pick up this book by this new-to-me-author and I was awarded with beautiful writing.

I did expect the letters to play more of a prominent role from early on, but it did not take away my enjoyment of the story.

Callie and Emmy won me over from the start with their tight bond and different but complimenting personalities. They had their own struggles and fears, losses, and happiness.

It was the first time in a while I was heartbroken with some huge losses and would have preferred to be in that everything just have a happy ending fairy land.

I will be reading more books by this author for sure!

2.5 ⭐️ In Letters from My Sister, Callie Bullock finds herself unable to remember how she received a head injury that removed all her memories of a curious family incident. The book tells of her journey to remember while she also falls in love and copes with tragedy.

My favorite part about the book was the sisterhood relationship. Callie and Emmy were so sweet to each other, and I thought their unwavering love and support was beautiful. Emmy was the best character, in my opinion.

For the rest of the story, though, I had a difficult time caring too much about what happened. From the get go, I didn’t understand what the big deal was about the plot elements that were supposed to be dramatic. It took a very long time for me to really even understand what the plot was. At first, it seemed like Lily would play a larger role, but she pretty much disappeared abut 25% of the way in. Then it seemed like the letters would feature more heavily, but they didn’t come until about the 60% mark, and there were maybe only 4 total (give or take, but there weren’t very many). When the secret was finally revealed, it felt very anticlimactic. Also, I felt like there needed to be more relationship development between Callie and Solomon. It started off well but then progressed too quickly.

My biggest problem with the book was the emphasis on “visions” and “seers.” That was weird coming from a Christian fiction book, and I wasn’t a fan of that theme.

DNF at 30%.

This book review was a bit tough to write. I loved the author's writing style and she's very talented in the storytelling department, but bits of the content in some of her books tend to be risque. So that spoils things quickly.

In this book the character is hot, so they decide to go skinny dipping at night. 😳😖 I mean, really!?! And this is after there's a predatory/harassing married male going about the community hitting up on random women? So stupid and just plain indecent.

The other thing was a mention of a book similar to the Odyssey and the sisters being allowed to read tales including that of the "sensuous Aphrodite" a false goddess of fertility, war and romance.

Then there's the element of racism and slavery that I could have done without.

This book had a lot of promise- a great setting, a nice family, and historical elements, but the negative content ruined my enjoyment of this book.

So, if I was looking to buy a book, sad to say, I would pass on this one.

Thanks to the publisher for the complimentary e-book I received to review through Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review, and the thoughts above are my own.

'Letters from My Sister' is a beautifully, poignant novel of family, in particular two loving sisters—heartbreaking yet humorous at the same time, tragic loss yet nonetheless full of life, and dark captivity versus glorious freedom. I absolutely adored this family because in spite of their affluence and want for nothing, the benevolence of the parents spreads to their offspring . . . ensuring a lot of joyful, humorous moments in this household! The author certainly does witty banter like no other.

Although this novel contains romance, this is not your typical sweeping romantical fiction read. I would categorize it more as literary fiction—which focuses on details of the characters' lives more than the plot. Which makes for a slower pace and time to dawdle in the details, but nonetheless still fascinating reading. And as in most literary fiction there is plenty of grief, despair, and unpredictable moments that are pretty hard to read—just as in real life. Although there are mixed reviews on this one, I found it totally unputdownable!

An emotional coming of age story about two twins who live in the south and the love and sorrow they both face.

I loved the characters in the story, from the beginning I thought that it was a feel good story, boy was I ever wrong 😅. I was not prepared for the emotional coaster. The romance in the story was my favorite and loved the character of Solomon.

I enjoyed the interesting mystery going on in the pages of this story too, when Callie ends up waking under a tree and can't remember the past few days. Going on the journey with her to discover what happened and also finding more faith and love in the God who heals her wounds.

I can't way too much more about the story without spoiling anything, you'll just have to read it.😄

This is the first book I have ever read from this Author, what a pleasure. Thanks Libby for a great audiobook.
Takes place shortly after the Civil War in Shelby County, Alabama.
I ‘thought’ I would be reading mostly letters between sisters, I was pleasantly surprised I was wrong.
This was a real feel good saga of how family members are supposed to treat each other.
I learned much about T.B., especially how deadly it can be.
A nice clean wholesome saga with romance and mystery throughout.

I just love the cover of this book! I was excited to read another book by Valerie Fraser Luesse and I really enjoyed the first half of this story. The main characters are intriguing and I was interested in Lily and what her life was all about. Some of this part of the book seemed a bit choppy to me so at times I had a hard time following what the author was writing. There is a running "mystery" that doesn't really develop until a few chapters in. The romance is sweet and doesn't overtake the entire plot. I wanted to find out what happened in the end but this book did take me a bit to finish. It was a slow read and so for me it wasn't my favorite read by this author. I did enjoy the diverse cast of characters and the historical perspective of life in Alabama.

Very interesting story.
Not exactly what I was expecting, but intriguing none-the-less.

This the story of two sisters, Callie and Emmy. They are daughters in a well-to-do family.
Emmy has found her love, and Callie is still looking... Their relationship as sisters is so sweet. Really, their whole family was just about perfect. But, there are definitely some unsavory characters to be found in these pages.
Bad things happen. Only, Callie doesn't know what or why. She is found with a head injury at the foot of her favorite tree one morning.
For awhile, I had a lot of questions. The author has masterfully written a gripping tale of those long ago days in the south.
This story has mystery, love, humor, and so much more.
I've loved each and every book by Valerie Fraser Luesse, and this one is definitely not the exception!

Valerie Fraser Luesse, bestselling author, totally impressed this reader with her writing skills. Flipping through the pages of this novel feels like gazing through a constantly shifting kaleidoscope of wonder. This captivating narrative radiates a blend of southern charm, cryptic allure, palpable suspense, and heartfelt romance!

If you are a devotee of Christian historical romance fiction, seize the opportunity to immerse yourself in this remarkable, five-star book -- its pages hold a journey you will not want to miss.

Swiftly, I found myself deeply engaged with the multifaceted, endearing characters and the intricacies of the narrative.

The echoes of Letters from My Sister will continue to resonate within my heart. I honestly believe God placed this novel in my hands at exactly the right time and truly helped me with something deep I was going through.

There is one caution I need to share. In the Bible, a seer is another name for a prophet. Is the gift of prophecy still in existence? Seers are mentioned in this book. I found myself being extremely cautious and praying my way through these. The author carefully and genuinely shares the details regarding this term and the gifts. We must be incredibly careful, as the author does, to always give God glory for all wisdom and gifts He gives us. Additionally, we are to pray about anything and everything anyone shares with us as we remain faithful and obedient to God.

Letters from My Sister is an irresistible journey of riveting, perpetual page turning.

What a compelling story! My first experience with books by Valerie Fraser Luesse, and I cannot wait to read more by her.

Letters from My Sister is a beautiful story steeped in Southern charm with a bit of mystery thrown in. Inspired by the author's own family, this work of fiction tells the tale of the "bonds between two Southern families-one White and one Black". I enjoyed all the endearing family members and whose bond enabled them to work together to overcome hatred and injustice in their neck of the woods.

A gripping tale of two sisters coming of age who are separated for a time and write to each other. There are real life, every day experiences of this close knit family. Including some sad times as well as sweet/ funny dialogue.

I highly recommend Letters From My Sister. Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley for allowing me to read this wonderful story. All opinions are my own.

I was blessed to receive this book as a gift and I’m so thankful I did. This is my first book by this author and now I want to devour everything she has written, as it was that great. Southern women’s fiction at its best is my opinion as the writing, pacing, and characters were spot on. It is a poignant tale that you will find yourself immersed in with a secret that keeps you guessing until the end. From the stunning cover to the last page you will carry it with you and think about it for days afterwards. I highly recommend adding this to your must read books.

What a simple story. The story of two sister living life and loving each other through it all. It is so much more than that.
I loved this story mostly because it is that. A story of two sisters who loved each other through it all. Times of great happiness and times of great sorrow. Times of complete trust and times of doubt. Valerie captures them all.
Callie and Emmy’s story is told in true southern tradition, gently, slowly and perfectly. I just wanted to climb onto a porch swing with sweet tea and enjoy.
Do yourself a favor, do just that.

*I do not rate books I don't finish.

I'm disappointed with this one. I did receive a copy of it for review and the back blurb really intrigued me. However, I dnf'd at around 40% in and there were no letters up until that point, which I assumed would have played more into the story considering the title.

The writing style is very amateur, with paragraphs of info-dumping to slog through. There was also the classic "she felt her face turning red" type of error, which happened frequently. (For those that don't understand, one cannot know the colour your face is turning, you don't see that. You only can tell if it gets hot or cold. Not a big deal for most people but definitely for me). Additionally, we mind-hopped quite frequently; we're only supposed to get Callie's POV but often got insight into other characters for just a sentence or two.

I did find the idea of the story intriguing and would have continued on if it had been told in a different manner. As it is, those kinds of errors keep pulling me out of a story and not wanting to pick it up again.

My thanks to Revell for the complimentary copy of Letters from my Sister to read and review. A positive opinion was not required, and all opinions expressed are my own.

Letters from My Sister by author Valerie Fraser Luesse is a three-hundred-and-fifty-two-page paperback. Published by Revell, this historical Christian fiction is poignant with heavy topics of physical abuse, illness, and death. It also includes relationship and family life lessons with a bit of mystery and romance.

Set in Alabama during the twentieth century, this is a touching tale of sisterly love. It is the story of sisters Emily and Callie. These sisters are extremely close to one another. When trials come, they begin to occasionally write letters to each other. In the letters they pour theirs hearts out about the issues they are facing.

The author did a wonderful job crafting the characters in this book. They are endearing and most have baggage that make them seem real. The sisters are Southern girls with a bit of sass. I felt transported to the time and place of the story by the author’s exquisite words. It took only a few pages to become invested in the story and the lives of the sisters. There were different subplots and a few twists that kept me turning pages. In fact, the ending was not expected by this reader.

I loved that their servants/slaves were treated like family and friends. Civil War books or books dealing with the horrors of slavery are difficult for me to read. I hate the injustice of it. This book pulled at my heart and made me shed a few tears.

I recommend this book to historical fiction lovers. For me, I wish it had just a bit more Christian content. This would make a wonderful book club choice. There is so much to discuss! It gets a 4 star rating from me. A copy was provided by the publisher, but these are my honest thoughts.
