Brown. Bob, (2008 ) Give me a home among the gumtrees. Omnibus Books, Scholastic Group, Gosford, NSW. An old poem made into a song, part of old folk tales which has become famous over the time of history. This poetic tune captures the heart of those listening, they struggle to stay still or not sing. This imitates an idea of a lush and peaceful lifestyle. It brings out the idea that the bush is full of colourful animals and lively characters. The characters and pictures in the book demonstrate a happy go nature of those who live there. It uses iconic places of the world to demonstrate some really important places around the world, but reveals that they the love the home in the bush so much more. Although this book is aimed for the younger readers, it is the tune and the music that will capture the hearts of its readers. The illustrations are so busy, that children would spend time mulling over the pages to try to see everything in them. The book uses a lot of Australian animals from all kinds of areas, it could be a great book to research the animals and where they actually come from. I myself would possibly use this book in an S+E lesson to teach the comparisons of the places they name in the book compared to Australia/their local area/ or where each particular animal comes from. This would also be a good book to help with doing assembly skits, by using some of the beautiful pictures to give ideas to the children of backdrops and stage props to do the song. It is a good book to use in the curriculum for the arts/drama/music, easy for children to learn and remember. With the simplicity of this book, it would be a good book to teach with accelerated learning, as children would be able to remember the words a little easier because of being a song as well. Helping them to recognise the words that you are centering on in the low to middle order in the style of teaching. Using this within Poetry is another area of being able to teach children their phonics and singing this will help children listen for the syllables and break the words up into their phonetical sounds. This book could fit into many areas of the curriculum it would be a matter of being creative with your thinking, but would recommend using this book at some stage.
Classic Australian song which can be just read or sung! Has both verses! I wasn’t a big fan of the illustrations on the front but inside they are much brighter and come to life. A fun read!
They've taken a classic Aussie song made famous by John Williamson (for a preview see here. This song was broadcast weekly into our home for over a decade as the theme song to Burke's Backyard (which incidentally occasionally featured a great children's book author Jackie French enjoying her other love of gardening).
I like and agree with many of the points made by Claire Saxby in her review.
The illustrations really capture the 'Australianness' and fun of the original song.
I suppose the only problem is to keep up with the timing of the original song you need to flip through the pages pretty fast!
The other books in the Aussie Gems series also look great.
A (modern) classic Australian song is accompanied by brilliant illustrations. Starting with the photo album style illustrations of holidays around the world, the warm illustrations then focus on "home". The song captures the laid back Aussie spirit and the illustrations enhance it with an additional storyline depicting the welcoming Aussie spirit of mateship.
