I devour the same books I enjoy writing: science fiction, set in an apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic or dystopian world. I love stories about regular people being thrust into extra ordinary circumstances, and having to rely on their own cunning and that of others to survive. And I love a twist at the end.
My just released Ashfall Apocalypse, as well as previous series Madness, Highway and Stone Age are those kind of stories. They're fast moving, have some regular (and amazing) characters who must make life changing decisions, all while the world is experiencing an apocalypse.
Besides writing, my wife and I travel the world (often to research the next book). But often you can find me on a beach, Kindle in hand, with my Toes in the Water (name of my publishing company).
I'm not sure how this book rated so highly. This is a combination of three books and each one gets subsequently worse. I don't understand how a writer takes a post apocalyptic setting and gives characters ZERO self preservation instincts. Most of the characters were two-dimensional caricatures you might find in a low quality western mixed with the internal monologues of women written by a man who has no idea how women actually think. Add to this the constant use of overt foreshadowing ('If only we had known what was coming, we would have acted differently'). Don't tell us something is about to happen, let the reader discover it along with the characters. I trudged through it, but by the end it read like a post-apocalyptic Hallmark movie. Kudos to those that liked it, but I was not one of them.
Gosh, this was truly unputdownable. Alot of gut wrenching, toe curling unpredictable suspense. For a while I thought I knew what was coming but I did not. I certainly cried a little and laughed other times but it was good kind of sadness. It's my first book by this author and I loved it. I thought it would be a survivor trying to get through an apocalypse but I was wrong it was so much more, Ronald and his makeshift family trying to make it out of the hell they were put through. I liked it a lot it may have been long but worth it. I don't have a lot of qualms other than Latica's character sometimes, I understand that she was a child but it bothered me a little. Overall I loved it and would recommend and read more books by this author.
I bought these books as I needed a change of pace from my usual reading matter... Thought it was probably going to be a bit naff at the price !!! ... But boy was I wrong !! I loved the characters... The resolve and strength of them all, I could only hope to be so resilient in their place. The baddies are really bad ... But I believe it would happen that way in an apocalypse? I really liked all the characters .... Except one .... ? Ha ha maybe two !! But it works in the end Well written storytelling.. will look out for other books from this author.
I really enjoyed this series. And to answer the author's question, I like Happy endings. I clocked the owner of the bunker before the reveal, and I was on tenterhooks thinking it wasn’t going to end well. Happy it did. Going to follow the author. One of the reasons being he didn't cop out when it comes to how some men would behave when there are no laws re Nan. I've read many apocalyptic stories where there is always a lucky escape beforehand.
I truly enjoyed the series. I appreciate being able to read the entire book without having to wait. I prefer books to be complete. This is a well written, hold your interest book . Thank you Mr. Banner for sharing your imagination. There is a sense of reality. I highly recommend this author.
This book actually works because it is exactly what will happen someday. Be it an EMP, earthquakes, floods, atomic bombs even another pandemic. This is coming and we had better be prepared. Because this will happen. Great book! M.L. Banner is one of my favorite authors. Keep them coming, I am already reading the next one. Whooo!!!
I'm a sucked for a happy ending and while I didn't think it would happen given all the dangers and rough times, but a tight knit group of people working together can make a difference, apocalypse or not! The resilience and grit of these characters had me hooked. Their perseverance and love pays off!
I can truly see all I read as happening. I have traveled to some of the places Ron and Nan did,as well as seen some of the happenings. Fast paced, attention getting.
I really loved this book, the story was believable, the characters were awesome and each person's personality was right on for them. Loved them all, except maybe OP. Gotta read to know !
This is an adventure so be forewarned and ppay attention because there will be a test. Ok maybe not but this is a good read and not the usual formula. Enjoy but keep up!
Wonderful book! I had to stop reading several times because I didn’t want it to end. Loved the Arizona ranch. Bigelow was funny in a way. He was so self righteous! I would love for the story to continue.
I really enjoyed this series. My only complaint is that it seemed to drag on in spots. I also felt it had kind of a fairy tale ending, that is unlikely to happen.
