Fable and her friends are on a mission to restore her grandfather’s memories. There's only one thing in Starfell that can heal his magical injuries—the ashes of a recently reborn phoenix. They head out to visit Thorn's family in the Windswept Mountains, who can guide them to a phoenix's den near their home. But finding its ashes and unlocking their magic is not going to be easy. Especially with Endora vying for the bird’s flames, desperate to use them to break her bond with the immortal dragon.
Can Fable and her friends reach the phoenix before Endora and find the key to unlocking its power?
Jessica Renwick is the author of the award winning The Book of Chaos, the first book in the fantasy series, Starfell, for middle grade children (and adults who love fantasy, magic, and adventure!).
She enjoys a hot cup of tea, gardening, her pets, consuming an entire novel in one sitting, and outdoor adventures. She resides in Alberta, Canada on a cozy urban homestead with her partner, tiny monster dog, four chickens, and an enchanted garden.
This is the fifth book in the Starfell series, and it was another solid magic-filled read.
After stopping Endora in the Oakwrath Thicket, Fable and friends are determined to restore her grandfather's memories and free Brennus's parents by traveling to the Windswept Mountains and collecting a phoenix's ashes. Can Fable and her allies succeed against the prying eyes of the magic-fearing folkvar colony and ominous revelations about Fable's magic?
With a series this long, it's hard to keep character progression going, but Renwick has really pulled out all the stops. Fable continues to discover more about her mysterious past, her parents, and her magic. At first I thought her concerns were unwarranted but I was surprised at some of the things I learned along the way.
Thorn continues to be my favorite character, and it was interesting to see how she struggled and persevered around her own people who have conflicting thoughts about magic. Timothy has grown to be a great supporting character, and I like that he's stepping up to the plate with his necromancy skills.
A special shout out goes to Leena, a new and mysterious character.
The writing was super easy to read and blaze through, and the plot was a lot of fun with oodles of magic! Once things really picked up I was totally immersed, and I think the next volume of this series will be quite the epic battle for Starfell. Can't wait!
If you like middle grade books and magic adventures, you can't go wrong with this series.
With each instalment, this story has grown around each character, bringing them forward into the next steps in their lives. There are moments of fear and self doubt throughout the group, but they continue to persevere.
This time we get to see inside one of the Folkvar colonies, and while it’s easy to get swept up in the stunning description, the group is struck by the reality of there being different varieties of prejudice to find there as well. Continuing on with Fable and co on their journey to find a Phoenix, in the hopes of restoring her grandfather’s memory, each stage becomes more treacherous than the last, and they need to rely on themselves (and each other) to make it to their destination.
While the characters we know are wonderful, as always, we continue to meet new and enchanting ones. The character development has such an organic feel to it, it’s as though you truly know these characters; they’ve filled out their dimensions throughout their adventures in each story, and grown in the way you’d always hope people do. The magical elements are levelling up in each tale as well, even beyond Fable’s own abilities; of one of my favourites would be this time we learn of evocation magic, which leads to learning all sorts of new things, taking Fable on a roller coaster of emotions, culminating in a bombshell discovery.
With each story, the challenges are becoming greater and they’re learning that for better or worse, not everything is as it seems.
Another hit from Jessica Renwick continuing to impress with this series. 🥰 As always, the characters' own stories are expanded, and the world too. This time we get some understanding of the past, and more exploration of magic and creatures.
It starts with personal struggles and an increasing threat from the Lich, leading intriguingly into the next book with nifty new info and impending doom, and, of course, hope.
An overall fun read of Fable and friends! I was super excited to receive an ARC, even though I have been in quite the reading slump lately. Even so, I happily read this book, which I think says something to its quality :D
