"Samahani" by author Abdelaziz Baraka Sakin, & co-translators, Mayada Ibrahim & Adil Babikir threads stories of memory and identity, and has been celebrated for its refusal to frame East African narratives within colonial paradigms. Through the work, we are invited to deeply reflect upon words, and the emotional, historical & cultural resonances they carry.
What strikes me about the translators' approach to translation is their ability to craft prose that feels alive, urgent, and sings in its new form. I find their choices inspiring and instructive—reminding us that translation is not merely an act of linguistic acumen, but also of care, activism, and a collaborative practice between author, translator, & reader.
