Are you totally stressed out, overwhelmed, or completely burnt out caring for a loved one? Are you feeling alone, isolated, or wish you had more help? Are you feeling resentful or guilty?
If this is you, keep reading.
While there are rewards to caring for those we love, there is no denying being a caregiver is a stressful job.
It’s physically demanding, mentally exhausting, and emotionally draining.
The responsibility wears us thin as we become a shadow of who we once were.
In 2020 it was estimated there were approximately 53 million caregivers in the United States alone, with up to 70% reporting symptoms of depression. With our ever-growing aging population, the lack of caregiver support, and the growing demands in our evolving personal lives, this number is likely only going up.
Even the most well-prepared and organizedcan’t escape the strain and burden that come along with caregiving.
Having felt all this and more, Katie Duncan, a nurse practitioner, Death Coach, and former family caregiver, reveals the secrets she learned throughout her own caregiving experiences, and the shared wisdom of other caregivers she’s encountered along her path.
It takes a very special person to be a caregiver, and you are one of them. You deserve to find your peace, your joy, and yourself again.
And there’s hope.

This is one of the best I've read for helping caregivers take care of themselves while caring for a loved on in their lives. Katie Duncan, the author of this book, is a nurse practitioner, and her experience as a caregiver herself in this role and in her personal life shines in this book. She provides 71 tips for caregivers to manage their stress. Each tip focuses on one item and is brief enough for a harried caregiver to digest and practice. As a caregiver myself for a family member, this is a reference guide I will consult over and over again for my self-care.
If you are a caregiver or have been suddenly thrust into the role as I have been, this is an excellent read. Not only is it challenging to find time for yourself, but there is also the guilt you feel when you even think about wanting to take some time. This book doesn't just give you tips for how to take care of yourself, Duncan gives you the mindset needed to take away the guilt. In order to be a good and effective caregiver, you MUST make that time for yourself.
I went into this book as a Caregiver in full burn-out. I admit that over halfway through I was still only willing to give 3 stars; the resources for trying to get help with and for your loved one earned the 4th star. Much of this advice is important for new caregivers to hear, but after having been at it for almost 7 years with an abusive family member as my patient, I sometimes felt the advice wasn't enough to pull me out of burn-out where I am; it was just repeating what therapists had already suggested. Just because the book wasn't a perfect fit for me, however, in no way means it won't help others! If you are a new caregiver on this crazy journey, READ THIS BOOK!
