Great story!

I was thoroughly engaged by this story and put aside my chores to finish reading this today. Body image issues concern many women and this story involves such issues as well as insanity, old gothic buildings and horror stories. Well done.

I absolutely LOVED this book. If I could give it ten stars I would. We have Dr. Rebecca Cavendash who just opened a clinic for women who wish to lose weight and make some changes in their lives. The clinic is located in the old Pine End asylum. Both the asylum angle, since there are still a few ex patients of the asylum in town, plus the clinic part are incorporated into the book. This is the only book I see by this author. Perhaps it is a debut. Excellent job. In the afterward, the author writes about her own struggles with unhealthy weight loss which really touched me as her honesty was incredible. If you don't mind a few cliches often found in psychological thrillers, this is a great book. I highly recommend it.

Snap, Crackle, Pop! 😳😯🤯😳😱

Beauty is skin deep... right? Holy caboodles & doodles! Insane in the membrane! If you want an absolute gothic thriller with a tinge of horror this is perfect for Halloween! Absolutely dark, creepy & undeniably insane in the best way possible for a thriller! If you enjoyed Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty, this is gonna be up your alley, with a devious twist. It is absolutely darkly and slightly disturbing but yet so darn delectable like the best piece of dark chocolate cake with a surprisingly yummy filling! This sensational, highly gripping novel will leave you with chills, goosebumpies & needing the light on! An absolute heart-stopping thriller that never stops and amps up continuously from one sinister event to another. Grab your pet, your stuffy, heck even grab your neighbour! Because you will not want to read this alone! This is going to give you the creeps in the best way! PS: I highly suggest comfort food / snacks with this one darlings!

TW: If you have food or diet-related triggers, then proceed with caution as this book & this review deal with fat-phobia & diet culture.

Six women are chosen from dozens of applicants to attend the Beautiful You clinic which has been established in what was a Victorian asylum, then psychiatric hospital, until it was finally closed down in the 1980s. The clinic offers the women a program of exercise & beauty treatments, & when the women arrive they are greeted by Dr Cavendish, her two assistants, Kim & Tina, & physical fitness coach, Robert. The women, Amy, Gaynor, Audrey, Caroline, Vicky, & Jasmine settle down to their routine for the next few weeks. There are a few odd things, such as the contract they all had to sign, the fact their suitcases were checked for 'contraband', the very restrictive diet, the 'vitamin' injections, & the nightly pills - but they all seem to get a good night's rest & the first week most of them successfully lose weight.

Still, the clinic is situated well away from the nearest towns & apart from the four staff & a few security guards patrolling the grounds, they are isolated & their phones have been confiscated from them. Meanwhile, former patient, Jenny, is paid by an ambitious housing developer who wants the land the clinic is built on, to sneak into the old building & take photographs of any health & safety breaches. Jenny was in the old hospital for over 10 years & knows her way around the building, but whilst she is there, she realises that there is something not quite right.

The narrative is told mainly by Amy, with some chapters from Jenny, & Dr Cavendish's point of view. Cavendish starts off as gently encouraging the women but as some start to rebel against the strict diet & exercise regime, that veneer is gradually chipped away. The clinic is marketed as self-improvement but let's be honest, it's a weight loss clinic, & those who fail to live by the rules are punished. Amy sneaks a chocolate bar & some sweets in but when Dr Cavendish finds out (she checks her 'guests' rooms whilst they are exercising), Amy is given laxatives, but even this didn't prepare me for the conclusion of the book.

It's a gripping read that examines the societal pressure on people, women especially, to look physically perfect. The clinic's motto is “Diet and Discipline Determine our Destiny”, basically looks matter & to be successful, you have to look the part, no matter what it takes. 4.5 stars (rounded down)

My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Joffe Books, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

I got to read this as part of an Intstabookstours Instagram tour and I'm so glad I was given the opportunity to read the book.

There is so much to digest in this book but ultimately pretty much every woman can relate.

The pristine Dr Cavendish runs the clinic, which was once an asylum, with an iron fist promising that if you follow her rules you'll have that dream body and the man/job you've always wanted. She has that "weight loss magic" that you've been waiting for.

A group of women find themselves within the walls of the clinic and subjected to the mandatory treatment to get them results fast.

Jenny is an ex patient of the asylum and is tasked to find out some incriminating evidence by her landlord so he can get the lease for the old asylum that he feels was unfairly granted to Dr Cavendish. Not only does she find that evidence but also uncovers more than she bargained for.

Amy is woman sent to the clinic by her mum and step dad but she soon starts to realise that something isn't right and she teams up with a stranger, but can they stop the devilish Dr Cavendish?

I think this book was so relatable in that loads of us are trying to lose weight and can succumb to fad diets and quick fixes and are never truly happy with how we look due to social media.

There's a difference between being skinny being healthy and these fads are never of the healthy variety. So the author here has taken this theme and ran with it in this disturbing thriller and I really enjoyed it.

Life isn't about being skinny. It's about being happy. Love yourself no matter what and who cares what anyone else thinks 💗

The Clinic was so intriguing I had to get my hands on it. I'm glad I did.

Women will become their very best selves at the clinic under Dr. Cavendish's care. Her clients become today's beauty standards. The facility was once an asylum! I absolutely LOVED this aspect of the story and how it's woven in.

This was deliciously disturbing. Very Stepford Wives. Chilling and full of suspense. Fantastic page turner.

Reading this book felt like eating a half-baked cookie — very disappointing 🥴 The Clinic was all over the place and left so many questions unanswered. I almost feel like the general synopsis gave away too much of the book, and there wasn't much left to chew on or interpret. If you're wanting a better version of this book, watch Death Spa, the 1989 film that shares the horrors of a beauty/exercise spa that gets possessed. Very camp, and a very good time :)

A book about a beauty clinic which has been set up in an old building which used to be an asylum. Yes please! I couldn’t wait to read this one, and I was not disappointed!

Amy and a small group of women apply to the clinic as they all want to lose weight, for one reason or another.

Dr Cavendish, the glamorous owner, has selected this small group for her next intake. Having signed a disclaimer they begin their very strict regime of pills, injections, exercise and very little food. They are not allowed to leave the clinic during the duration of their stay, nor can they contact the outside world. Then one of the group disappears, sent to hospital according to Dr Cavendish.

What is that music Amy can hear playing?

Jenny used to be a patient when the building was an asylum. As she knows it so well, and desperate for money, she has agreed to sneak in to take photos of any health and safety shortfalls for her landlord, who wants to make a case to the council to get rid of the clinic so he can buy the building. He is annoyed that the council let Dr Cavendish have it instead of him, as he wants to build more housing for the community.

On one of her visits Jenny finds more than she bargained for and her life is in danger.

What a chilling story.
The building was so creepy and well described by the author. I could visualise those old rooms full of the trolleys and instruments which used to be used on the patients.
I felt so sorry for poor Amy who had been sent to the clinic by her parents, and Jenny who had tried to make a life for herself since leaving the asylum.

A gripping psychological thriller I highly recommend.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'The Clinic' by Sally-Anne Martyn.

Read and reviewed for ZooLoos Book Tours, Joffe Books, NetGalley and Sally-Anne Martyn.

Publication date 27th October 2022.

This is Sally-Anne Martyn's debut novel.

I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching cover and intriguing sounding synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is 'Perfect for fans of Freida McFadden, Colleen Hoover and Lucy Clarke' and that 'Fans of One of the Girls, Nine Perfect Strangers, Sarah Pearse, Sue Watson, Alice Feeney and Patricia MacDonald will love this taut, dark thriller.'I am a HUGE fan of Freida McFadden and Sue Watson so am looking of the book lives up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Joffe Books. I have yet to read a book published by Joffe Books that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of a prologue, 92 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in Crowthorpe, North Yorkshire , England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, UK 🇬🇧. The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture. I have visited and holidayed in England on a couple of occasions so am looking forward to see if I recognise anywhere.

This book is written in third person perspective with the main protagonists being Doctor Rebecca Cavendish, Jenny and Jenny. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.

This book is extremely well written with vivid descriptions that really set the scene and kept me on the edge of my seat. The cover and synopsis suited the storyline perfectly.

An absolutely spine tingling page turner!!!

Love, LOVE, LOVED this absolute page turner!! It may be the first book I have read by Sally but I can promise you it won't be the last!!! As soon as I've written this up I'm off to add all her books to my wishlist. The storyline is absolutely ram packed with mystery, tension, suspense and OMG the twists just kept on coming again and again!!! Every time I kept telling myself one more chapter the one I was in ended at a point where there was no way I could stop reading so I absolutely devoured it in one sitting!! I absolutely LOVED the creepy asylum setting which turned this psychological thriller into a fantastic creepy and gothic horror where women are just dying to lose some weight and look good. I am a huge fan of horrors and anything that is set in asylums are definitely a huge bonus for me and will guarantee I will read it!!! I loved the unique storyline which is actually extremely thought provoking as well as quite sadly realistic. We live in a world where how you look seems to be more important than who you are on the inside. When I was younger size 10 and 12 was considered slim but now it is size 6 and 8 and anything over seems to be considered too big which is a disgrace. Women are always getting body shamed on person on the TV and everywhere you go there are adverts for slimming products, photos of models and magazines filled with beauty products. It would be amazing if we could all compliment each other for who we are and where every woman picked each other up instead of putting others down. Anyway, sorry I digress this book just goes to show the lengths people will go in the name of beauty and what happens when it becomes an obsession. I WAS absolutely blown away by the twists and considering I read approximately 30 books a month that is certainly no easy feat so a HUGE congratulations on that Sally. If you are looking for something unique, filled with suspense and that will blow your mind then this is definitely the book for you!!

DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT READING THIS UNTIL YOU HAVE CLEARED YOUR SCHEDULES AS YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PUT IT DOWN!!!

I wasn't just 100% invested in the storyline but also in the characters. Every single one of the characters were well defined, realistic and strong. They all had their good and bad sides and I enjoyed watching how the different women reacted to each other at the clinic. My heart absolutely went out to Jenny who had been originally locked up in the asylum for being a typical teen and her life spiralled downhill from there. Sadly you would like to think this would never happen in reality but I was absolutely shocked and disgusted when I discovered a lost of things that would have got you sectioned many years ago and if you are a woman reading this then that would have included you!! Thank goodness times have changed!! I really hope that Jenny does get the answers she is looking for and I would have loved to know the truth but sadly in real life you don't get all the answers you want. However, the ending does have me hopeful that there will be a sequel so fingers crossed 🤞. It wasn't just Jenny I felt sorry for but for each of the women who didn't feel they were good enough as they were and that they had to go to a clinic whether for themselves, to win back an ex or to continue to model. It does make me sad to realise how realistic these characters are and how many women out there are slimming for the same reason. I can't say I felt sorry for all the characters but I also won't say anymore as I don't want to spoil it for future readers. However, you can't get along with everyone and each of these characters had the perfect personalities to make this book as addictive as it was!!

A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Sally on what promises to be a massive best seller!!! I WAS absolutely shocked by the twist was absolutely shocking!!! I can't say anything else but when you've read it you'll know!!! Welcome to my favourite author list Sally and here's to your next explosive success 🥂!!!

Overall an absolutely addictive, mind blowing, creepy gothic page turner that will keep you up with a racing heart until you've finished!!!

Genres covered in this book include Crime Fiction, Thriller, Women's Detective Fiction, Psychological Thriller, Debut, Suspense, Women's Crime Fiction, Detective Fiction, Mystery, Psychological Fiction and Women's Sleuths amongst others.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Angela Marsons, Helen H Durrant, Rachel McClean, One of the Girls, Nine Perfect Strangers, Sarah Pearse, Sue Watson, Alice Feeney, Freida McFadden, Colleen Hoover, Lucy Clarke, Patricia MacDonald and just anyone who is looking for a page turning addictive read!!!

378 pages.

This book is just 99p to purchase on kindle, free on kindle unlimited and £8.53 (at time of review) via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
This book was exactly what I wanted Nine Perfect Strangers to be but that one missed the mark for me, whereas I loved this!

I have just read a thriller so I wouldn't usually immediately go into another but I was so tempted by this one and everyone was raving about it and rushing through it in the group chat!

We follow a few different characters in this one and the story is twisted, but a great story. I wish I'd had more time to read this in a couple of sittings as I easily could have done.

The only bit that lost half a star for me is that I still don't really know what happened at the end? But I think that might just be me needing more clarification on a few points!

I'd love to know what some of these characters got up to after and would definitely love to read more from Sally-Anne. There was a really important message about body dysmorphia in this; something we need to see more of in books.

This is a very haunting and compelling book with twists that you won't see coming. Sally-Anne Martyn is a very talented writer and it shows in her writing. THE CLINIC gripped me from the first page and refused to let go until I'd devoured every last word. Unputdownable!

The Beautiful You Clinic. A place that women are falling over themselves to be able to attend. Six women are chosen to attend the Clinic to take part in their programme of beauty treatments and exercise. It sounds like heaven and Dr Cavendish is determined to make every single womans dreams become reality, but just how far will she go to achieve this?

An ex-asylum, this Clinic seems to be perfect, too perfect for me anyway. Everything about this Clinic made me want to shout at every single woman to not be so stupid and get out. This storyline was packed with a dark, twisted atmosphere that has mystery pouring from the pages. So much suspense too!

Told from the multiple perspectives of Dr Cavendish and Jenny, a woman there for more than the treatments. As the story develops and we learn exactly what both characters motivations are, everything gets so much more darker and crazy.

The character development is great too, which adds another layer to this novel that definitely keeps you on your toes. There are plenty of twists and turns that don't stop until the final page.

Another book that I didn't want to put down. Sally-Anne Martyn may be a new author to me but she has sparked my interest in her work. The Clinic is one heck of a rollercoaster ride that I didn't want to get off. A dark twisty, spine tingling psychological thriller that I recommend to the psychological thriller readers out there.

This was such a great read. Certainly something I could connect with after trying lots of different diets and fitness programs over the years.

It is scary to think the levels some people will go to. I didn’t like Dr Cavendish at all I knew there was something off with her. I liked Amy she was loyal to her friends throughout.

The setting of the old asylum gives creepy vibes the author did a great job describing it.

I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

Thank you to Instabooktours and the author for having me on the tour and for my gifted ebook.

I received an advance review copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you @sallyannemartyn, @JoffeBooks, and @zooloosbooktours for my #giftedbook!

The Clinic is highly engaging and will keep you engaged from start to finish. The clinic is unlike other clinics for a variety of reasons and who wouldn't want to stay in an all-inclusive stay and be pampered all day? Guests are hand selected and all they have to do is take a few pills per day, join in the activities and their lives will be transformed? However, all is not what it seems.

This book is creepy, fast paced, and was a perfect read for fall. The book takes place in a former insane asylum that has been transformed into a high-end, luxury wellness center. Filled with a cast of eclectic characters, this book will keep you engaged from start to finish. I appreciated the author's ability to create depth within the characters while moving the story forward. The descriptions are so good, they gave me the chills. Filled with red herrings, twists, and turns you won't want to put this one down.

I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good thriller with an unexpected end!

I really enjoyed this. A clinic for weight loss and revamp. The stylish Dr Cavendish runs a tight ship at her new clinic. She promises a select few applicants to undergo her treatment plan. She promises results!

I was excited to have a couple of 'oh my god!' moments nearing the end.

Dr Cavendish is not all she seems!

Nothing deep and meaningful here. Just a great story, engaging characters and a good pace.

I had serious FOMO when I saw the @instabooktours readalong for this but I was kindly accepted the book from @netgalley so I didn’t feel too left out!

I had so many thoughts as to where the story was going and who was who but I was so wrong, I never would have guessed who Dr Cavendish was at all.

The moral of the story for me hits home, I have always suffered with being on the heavier side of life and my weight plays havoc with my mind. So much so, I have tried things to get rid of certain parts and it has been unsuccessful. I’ve been on a diet for the past 2 years and successful lost nearly 2 stone but my mental health for the way I look has hit rock bottom.

This was such an incredible book, it showed the extent some go to to look a certain way that society nowadays says you should look like and what people will do to get that ‘model look’. Im trying to remind myself that we are all human and our bodies are beautiful but its hard when you’re overweight :(

Dr Cavendish was a douche from the get-go. You could tell she had a vendetta but against what, it took me a while to figure it out. I also felt a bit ‘iffy’ about Robert, he was very much a creep in all ways.

I wondered where Jenny came in to it all but at the end, it all made sense and fell in to place and very smartly written. Amy was a great, strong minded character who fought for her friends until the end.

I really enjoyed it, so much so, I binged it in about 20 hours. A fantastic book to end a great month of reading for me and to finish on Halloween!

Thank you to @netgalley for allowing me this ARC and to @sallyannemartyn for writing such a fantastic thriller. I’m obsessed, and I want to say, your acknowledgement at the end regarding weight and how we look, touched me.

And a thank you to Vic (@instabooktours) for sending me your prompts and allowing me to use them!

Thank you to Instabooktours and Sally Anne Martyn for the opportunity to read this book on The Clinic blog tour.

What can I say? I love me a good asylum based story, the creepier the better and this angle was really unique, interesting and suspenseful.

Dr Rebecca Cavendish has opened her women's wellness clinic in a former asylum to a few raised eyebrows, including those who used to be former patients of the asylum when it was a psychiatric hospital. The ladies attend the clinic to lose weight and become their best potential selves, but at what price? Former patient Jenny is being tasked by her landlord to find out the clinic's dirty secrets. Little does she know the asylum's roll in her life will continue long after its closure.

I loved the range of characters within the clinic, Amy I felt was quite a gullible character but her inner strength and intelligence shone through. Jenny I liked also, as troubled as she was, she really was moving on and building herself up after a very difficult start. The twists and turns of story keep you on the edge of your seat at times and desperate to know more. The little drips of details that you may miss end up being really significant.

I definitely didn't predict the outcome of this one! I would most definitely have been out of there and fast! 🤣.

There's a lesson within the story about being kind to yourself, about the enormous pressure to be "perfect" and how the social pressures can really affect a person's wellness overall. So much pressure is placed on women to be small, skinny and young looking which is reality isn't the most important thing you can be.

Loved the story and would 100% recommend. 5⭐

THE CLINIC by Sally-Anne Martyn.
Would you go to a beauty clinic that promises to transform your life? If you’re prepared to put the work in. It seems like the opportunity of a lifetime. An all-inclusive stay at a top-of-the-line wellness retreat for a month of pampering and luxury. Not just anyone gets in. Guests are hand selected. They promise big results: a total transformation. All you have to do is take a few pills every day. Join in the activities. Make some new friends. But then you start to lose track of time. The meals get smaller. Everything is taken away from you. And the guests start disappearing . . . Will you be next?
Really enjoyed this book. Gripping and tense. 5*.

4.5⭐️

I really enjoyed this one. It started with a Nine Perfect Strangers vibe with the retreat, total trust in the Dr running it, drugs and changing yourself (I’ve only seen the tv show). It certainly became something of its own.

I loved the setting of the old asylum and that it wasn’t all renovated. It added even more of a creepy factor. I liked the story and the sub plot of former patient coming from the outside. The spattering of patient files and history of the asylum added to the story.

The author chose a topic that many can relate to (weight loss, diets) and showed how beauty standards can drive people to desperate measures and make them vulnerable.

This was a well written and dark thriller. I enjoyed it to the point that I finished it well before the readalong I was part off was over. This is one that I would definitely recommend.

Thank you to @sallyannemartyn @joffebooks and @instabooktours for the gifted copy.

The history behind the clinic and how it turned into or at least it’s in the process of turning into a beauty clinic it’s a really interesting plot, that I knew I was going to love.

The doctor seems very dodgy and although I really enjoyed the passage in which we get to know the girls, I wanted them to turn around the moment they entered the clinic.

All the clauses to what they’re signing up were big red flags, but I loved the concept that more often than not is actually reality: Trying to do everything to fit in and meet the impossible beauty standards imposed by society.

The author’s note is also a must read, as she goes through her own struggles that led to the conclusion that ‘there is so much more to us than what we see in the mirror’.

AD-PR product - I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Such a fantastic book! Showing the measures people will take to be ‘perfect’ and the extreme measures that people will go to reflect their opinions/idealisms on others.

Whilst this book is very creepy (the mental images I had of the basements were as mental as Dr Cavendish 😂) I loved the interactions within the group and was cracking into at some of the stuff they were coming out with.

The different POVs really made the story! Especially reading about the clinics previous set up.

I absolutely loved this book, I found it really hard to put down. The characters were easy to like - well the ones you're supposed to like and those you're not were easy to dislike. Loved the premise and thought it was well written.

The Clinic
By Sally-Anne Martyn

Warning: this book will put you off your snacks.

A dark and twisted psychological thriller set in an exclusive diet clinic based in the grounds of Pine End Asylum. Dripping in horror tropes and ‘hold your breath’ chilling moments, this novel made the perfect spooky season read - written in a way that is richly descriptive, the reader is taken on a slow but suspenseful journey through the clinic and it’s sinister goings on.

Ok. Il admit it. I didn’t read the blurb properly on this one… and if I had I probably wouldn’t have read it as a clinic based around hard core weight loss is massively triggering for me, a plus sized woman who has struggled with body image most of my life. HOWEVER. It was a really good read actually. Martyn is a very talented writer, her prose jumped out of the page and into my imagination effortlessly. While I did find the first 50-75 pages harder to get into I was totally invested by the midway point and spent an evening totally engrossed in this books pages.

A disturbing and unique novel which straddles the genres of thriller and horror beautifully, with an ending that left me feeling satisfied. This novel is one that I’d recommend widely but please do consider if you’ll find the focus on weight disruptive to your own mental health beforehand.

What price would you put on beauty? What would you be willing to loose?
Strangers from different places meet at this new beauty clinic (ex-asylum) were you surrender everything for a new you. Will it be worth it?

We got spooky gothic vibes from the start.
🚨TW: eating disorders and diet culture🚨 Sadly I find these topics were not treated with respect and this alone was a big no for me. DNF, as it was too slow paced, we get various POV’s with no purpose and the story just goes nowhere.

Thank you NetGalley for my copy!
