Rate this book
A woman with the desire to heal. A lord with a shameful secret. And a contract that binds them together.

Wishing to follow in her father's footsteps, EVELYN PROCTEN has always tended to those in need. Despite social convention, the only future Evelyn can see for herself is that of a doctor…until she is called to Farnworth Manor to tend to the young viscount's sister, who finds herself unmarried and with child.
Unfortunately, her stay at Farnworth Manor once again throws Evelyn into the path of Lord Ashwood, a man she has loved from a distance for many years. A man who has never looked at her twice. A man who disapproves of her professional ambition.

As far as society is concerned, RICHARD DAVENPORT, VISCOUNT ASHWOOD, is a cold-hearted and uncaring man. Although he does not overly care for society's opinion of him, he cannot deny that there is truth in their assessment. Nevertheless, Richard knows his duty and would never act against propriety.
However, the whispers retreat into the background when his unmarried sister reveals to him that she is with child. Determined to maintain her secret, Richard keeps her locked away at Farnworth Manor. Still, in order to ensure his sister's well-being, he is forced to call upon the one woman who has always been able to melt the ice from his heart.

Will he be able to resist her? Or will he succumb to her tender heart and share with her the one secret that has always determined his life?

I started this series with installment #11 for some odd reason. However, the book is totally able to stand on its own and entertained quite compellingly.

Evelyn Procten had been trained by her father in his profession, the local doctor. She had an intuitive nature, was very knowledgeable in her field, and a strong desire to follow in her father's footsteps. However, women were not acknowledged as bright enough to assume the position of doctor and were shunned in favor of a man even if he had less training.

Richard Davenport, Viscount Ashood appeared to be a cold-hearted and uncaring man, who strictly followed society rules, including his preferential choice to call for a man training under Evelyn's father to administer healing needs in his household.

Neither of them had any idea that destiny would play a part in crossing their paths on a permanent basis. Prior to the advancement in their relationship, many struggles were addressed, including a medical condition that would have been extremely rare to diagnose during that era, which caused shame and misery for Richard all his life. Evelyn was indeed an inspiration, playing such a strong and capable woman.

As far as I can remember, this was a clean and wholesome with the exception of some hugging and kissing.

Heat Factor: winter

Character Chemistry: they communicated well

Plot: redundant

Overall: nope

Evelyn Procten is the village doctor’s daughter and has been training with him since she was young. Doctoring is her calling. Now she’s in her 20s, her father is ailing, and they’re planning for the future, which involves her marrying her father’s apprentice who is both sexist and arrogant but also unskilled and lacking empathy.

Richard Davenport is Viscount Ashwood and his family manor is close to the Proctens’ village. Ashwood is supposed to have a form of high functioning autism such that he is unable to interpret people’s expressions and intentions, so he is reserved and most people believe him to be to be cold and unfeeling.

At the outset, the story is projected as being about a woman doctor who’s very skilled, but who, living in a man’s world, will never be able to achieve her potential. Nevertheless, she will persevere because medicine is her calling, and who needs a man anyway? This thread unravels quickly, although is periodically picked up a few more times in the story, but really Evelyn adjusts to not being a doctor quite readily when it comes to the point. And the point is that Richard and Evelyn’s fathers had arranged a marriage for them when they were much younger, so E becomes Lady Ashwood approximately halfway through the book. Apparently they were already attracted to one another, but they had different life trajectories until they learn of their fathers’ agreement, so they’re both super angry about it for about 20 pages before simply capitulating. Because honor. Never mind the hypothetical engagement between Evelyn and the Dr.’s apprentice, which was mentioned very early and then left to trail behind the rest of the story in the dust. And also never mind E and R secretly have the hots for each other but let’s not let that get in the way of the being angry at the fathers and the honor.

There are three points of conflict, all somewhat tied together. First, Evelyn is a doctor and wants the independence to be a doctor first, love second, and the title of “wife” for its own sake not at all. Second, Evelyn wants to have her skills and knowledge as a doctor respected, especially by Richard. Finally, Richard’s sister is unmarried and pregnant, which means that if she doesn’t want to face social ostracism, she’ll need to remain secluded until the baby’s birth and then give up the baby to an adoptive family.

The story is driven by the sub-plot of Richard’s sister. Claudia attempted to elope, was left behind by her spineless intended husband when his brother came to fetch him, and subsequently got drunk and had sex with a stranger, which left her compromised in a pretty big way. She is a vivacious and social young woman, so the ostracism that would follow her after the birth of an illegitimate child would be akin to death for her. Richard is trying to protect her for her future, and Claudia is chafing against the restriction of having to hide her pregnancy, which is the whole conflict between brother and sister when the story begins. Somehow this struggle for Claudia’s happiness transforms from her own careless social selfishness to a heart wrenching trauma of a mother losing her child, which at first seems wholly projected onto Claudia by Evelyn. Honestly, Claudia acknowledges in chapter 6 (of 45 (?!), so pretty early) that Richard’s decision is good for her, so she basically comes across as a petulant young woman who made her own impetuous bad choice (also acknowledged by the lady), and refuses to live with the consequences both in the short and long term. If I were Richard, I would also be like WTH is wrong with you Claudia? And Evelyn, why are you the most naive woman on the planet for thinking an unmarried noblewoman could have a child out of wedlock? He’s way nicer about it than I would be, though.

Just a quarter of the way through the book, after E harangues R as a cruel and heartless tyrant, Richard explains why he’s doing what he’s doing, and they both agree that he’s thought through every angle and is probably in the right. So although a quarter of the way through the book, Claudia, Evelyn, and Richard ALL AGREE that it’s probably ultimately best for Claudia to be sequestered until she gives birth so she has a fighting chance of maintaining her reputation, this argument recurs AT LEAST TWICE MORE. And again, Evelyn is somehow surprised by R’s emotional intelligence and caring for his sister. Seems like maybe not the greatest foundation for a marriage.

Also, something of a non sequitur here, if Claudia has positive, loving feelings about the man she slept with even though she has no idea who he is (wait, what? But yes, Claudia says this), why is it that no one suggests that they go to Scotland to see if they can find this man? This would have made pretty much every character feel better about his/her life choices.

Enough about the story. It’s a little all over the place. Is the problem that Evelyn wants to be a doctor? Is it that Richard is autocratic with his sister? Is it that R and E have an arranged marriage? Is it that they’re secretly in love with each other and aren’t convinced that the feeling is reciprocated? Is it a murder mystery? I just don’t know! Let’s talk about the romance, because the plot can be totally bonkers as long as there’s a solid romance!

There’s not. R and E are supposed to have some steamy kisses and lustful yearnings, but I am totally not convinced. Evelyn does realize that Richard has a hard time understanding the emotions of others, so she begins their romantic relationship with an agreement of open communication. I commend Wolf’s presentation of this. It drives me crazy when the conflict between protagonists is exclusively due to the fact that they refuse to talk to each other and make unfounded assumptions. In terms of communication in their marriage, R and E are pretty solid. In the bedroom…eh. The writing is very tame and euphemistic with respect to sex, so almost all of the passion and urgency in their romance is in the kissing, and it’s just not there.

In the next instant, his hands reached for her, sweeping her into his embrace. A small gasp escaped Evelyn before his mouth closed over hers, kissing her with a passion she had never known before.

Congratulations, Evelyn. I also haven’t known it because you have effectively described nothing.

In another instance of why is this even happening vacillation: When Richard and Evelyn become formally engaged and determine there will be one month until the wedding, E kisses R with one of those kisses and they both say “one month” to each other with breathless anticipation at the end of it. They have a conversation during which Evelyn says they don’t know each other very well, and after some back and forth they both acknowledge that they know each other at an “our souls speak” level. And then on the night of the wedding out of the blue, without having previously discussed it with her husband-to-be, Evelyn decides she doesn’t want to consummate the marriage until they know each other better. Are you for real right now? You had a MONTH to talk to Richard about this, and you spring it on him on the wedding night when, up to this point, you had been consistently signalling you’re emotionally ready for this moment. My problem isn’t even that she doesn’t want to consummate the marriage. It’s that she goes blithely along and then pulls the rug out from under Richard. A++ communication there.

Just save yourself the frustration and skip this one.

Oppressed & Empowered moved a little too slow for me. I set it aside a few times, but I finally finished it. I'm glad I did. The last few chapters had one twist after another and offered a surprise ending. I give this book 3.5 stars.

Interesting.

Whilst the idea for the novel is good. Plus the difficulties borne by those unable to read facial, body or social cues is addressed . I feel a bit disappointed. Not entirely sure why. The isolation felt by those with these difficulties is obvious and the maneuvering through life is made more complicated and more isolating is well dealt with. The point is definitely made as is the issue surrounding illegitimacy and the expectation of women in the period.
The twists and turns are intertwined well but I'm still a bit deflated after reading. I'd prefer not to be.
I think it's because reading a novel to me is not a forum in which I want to be lectured.
T'is not Ms. Wolf's fault. She does not know the experiences of her readers. Not all their expectations.
For those of you with less knowledge of Aspergers/ ASD it's a good read . Even for those who have more, but for you it would be a whirl wind of remembering perhaps.
Of the books in the series this is a novelty. It stands out unique in the saga. A standalone! It does say in the blurb.
Roll on 2019 for the next installments.

Another well written book from the author, this is part of a series but could be read on its own. There are appearances from some characters of earlier books & It was enjoyable to find out what has been happening to them. Evelyn is a strong woman who really grows to fully understand Richard & his difficulties & it was so touching how she used that understanding to help him. Richard is misunderstood but likeable. I simply loved their love story & I was captivated all the way through. Another worthy addition to this outstanding series
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

SETTING: Two women’s stories are developed: one the daughter of a doctor, trained from youth to be a physician learning all of her father’s skills and all she could by reading; the other, a flighty young woman (sister to the current Viscount) who becomes pregnant after a run to Gretna Green, which fails to produce a marriage certificate, as the groom’s brother intercedes before the ceremony. The 2 young ladies, Evelyn and Claudia are brought together when Evelyn and her father come to attend Claudia after a fainting spell. Despite vast differences in training, skills, character and social status, both women face similar problems in working out their own lives in the early 1800’s—women are under the power of men, not free to make their own decisions and careers in the general view of society. To effect change, men’s minds have to be convinced, one man at a time. How will Evelyn gain the trust and respect of Richard, Claudia’s older brother, who initially does not want her to care for Claudia? What will it take to earn the respect of an arrogant, new apprentice to Evelyn’s father? Will Evelyn be able to find love and a husband and STILL be viewed as a competent physician in the community? And what of Claudia’s child-must it be surrendered to another couple to escape the disgrace of being a bastard? Will Claudia even have a voice in what is to become of the child?
CRITIQUE: Once again Ms. Wolf has executed a stunning novel, wrestling with complex social issues of the day. She masterfully woven a story depicting women struggling for the right of self-determination in the 1800’s. Yet, there is something more in this novel-an attempt to view the life of a young man struggling with Asperger’s syndrome at a time when such a problem had no name, nor any particular recognition by the medical community or by society. It is with Evelyn’s love and her attempt to understand Richard, that the self-protective shell he has built around himself is cracked, allowing Richard to enjoy life to a fuller extent.
The writing is excellent, the storyline superb—leaving us hungry to know.....’and then what happens??’ Of course, such a cliff-hanger will have it’s followup in another story. The depiction of how difficult it was (and often times still is) for women to be looked upon as having the same level of competence a man has, is right on target. The qualities Evelyn shows of quiet confidence and careful observation, truly are important qualities in any practicing physician. So, with excellent writing, a true grasp of the difficulties of women physicians and pregnant single women in the 1800’s, we have an outstanding novel for our enjoyment.

Holy Smokes!! What an awesome historical romance. Oppressed and Empowered is a book that you'll have trouble putting down once you start it. This well-written book will have you cheering in spots and tearing up in others. The characters are spectacular and a perfect fit for this book. Richard's sister has managed to get pregnant and doesn't remember it. Richard is struggling to do the right thing for her. He has trouble reading people's feelings so it's not an easy task. Evelyn has trained with her father her whole life to become a doctor. Because she's a woman it's hard to be accepted as a doctor though. Evelyn and Richard's story is loaded with drama, humor, spice, action and suspense. I loved every page of this book and look forward to my next book by Bree Wolf. Oppressed and Empowered is book 5 of the Love's Second Chance: Damsels and Knights Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

Born before her time in an era where women were not allowed to have a career and had to be satisfied with marriage and homemaking being their ultimate goal, Evelyn finds herself at odds with not only Viscount Ashwood, but the people of the village as well. In spite of his strong views on the subject, Richard Davenport cannot help but be attracted to Evelyn, even though she is way below his station in life, added to which her unorthodox views on doctoring break all his hard-held rules. The Viscount, on the other hand, has his own difficulties and keeping people from discovering his secret, he holds himself to a rigid set of rules. Little was known both then and now about the Viscount's condition and sadly people are no less judgmental when it comes to dealing with victims of disabilities. Slowly but surely Evelyn breaks down Richard barriers and she discovers that under the stern exterior there is a man who feels and cares deeply. This book has to be one of my favourites written by this author. It is well written with a tender and clean romance that develops into full-blown love between Richard and Evelyn, taking the reader along with them as they explore each other's worlds. Although this book is part of a series and some of the characters from previous novels appear in this one too, it is a standalone and comes to a happy conclusion, with a hint of the next episode in this series. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

This author never ceases to amaze me with the storylines and characters she comes up with. This book is no exception. What was life like for someone dealing with autism before the condition was even identified medically? It’s a good question, one that I never have thought of before, but it made an excellent story. I loved how intuitive Evelyn was as she learned how to logically pose questions to help Richard reason matters out. It was so interesting to see how the story unfolded, things you don’t expect to happen happening. It was sweet and loving. I like that no one tried to change anyone. They excepted who others were and acted accordingly out of love. As always I can’t wait to find out about the stories of the other characters involved in this book.

Come on Women’s Lib! During the era when women were not encouraged to do more than raise families and look good, Evelyn’s father taught her the knowledge and skills she would need to become a doctor. But who would ever call for a woman to treat a member of their family? Against Society’s dictates, Evelyn is determined to make her mark and when a situation presents itself, she takes it with an open heart and mind. Richard Ashwood, loves his sister but cannot show it. When she becomes ill, will Dr Procten be able to help her? This is a lovely story with enough twists and turns to keep your interest all the way through. I highly recommend this book.

It absolutely amazes me how Bree Wolfe can hit it out of the park again and again. Each book is different, and each book is a delight. This is the story of Evelyn, a heroine that anyone would stand up and applaud. A doctor in a time when woman were seen as incapable, her spirt makes you smile page after page. Wolfe has also shown her writing mastery, with the characterization of Richard, a personal emotionally distanced from the world through no fault of his own. The love between the two is a life-line to Richard. The relationship is one readers will not forget. The book creates a wonderful mystery with Richard's sister, leading the reader to look forward to the next book.

I would like to thank the author for a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Evelyn is the doctors daughter who only wants to follow in her father's footsteps.
Richard doesn't quite understand the world around him, he struggles to read others emotions. Their father's made an agreement that they would marry.
I love the slow burn romance and that the MC has high functioning autism.

I really enjoyed this book. The personalities of the various characters were developed in such a way that I felt that I personally knew them. I also enjoyed the relationship between Evelyn and Richard--with their conversation becoming more intimate as they "grew" into the relationship. Communication was definitely the key to a loving, deeper relationship and understanding. I also was fascinated by the author's characterization of what it might have been like to have Asperger's syndrome during the Regency era. This was a clean Regency romance, and I'm looking forward to reading about Claudia's story very soon! I highly recommend this book.

Richard Davenport, Viscount Ashwood, has a hard time reading those around him and social situations that do not follow strict rules and guidelines. He strives to always do his duty and adhere to society's rules. As a result of acting on facts and rules over emotions, people assume that Richard is cold and unfeeling, including Evelyn.

Evelyn has been studying under her father in order to become a doctor, her life's passion being to heal and help others. But as a woman she is consequently met with resistance or brushed aside. She consistently has to prove herself to those around her. Therefore when Richard calls her father, instead of her, to his sister's aid she feels over-looked and that she must prove her abilities once more.

Richard truly doesn't realize that he could have offended or hurt her with this choice. By his view of things: her father is a doctor, his sister needs a doctor. Therefore his sister should be attended to by her father. And as the story progresses they both must work to see things from the other's point of view.

I quite enjoyed this one. I work as a teaching assistant in a classroom for students with autism spectrum disorder and I love that this book showed that not everyone thinks and processes in the same way. That if your just open your mind to the possibility that not everyone interprets things the same way, like Evelyn did, it enables you to understand others better. I was very happy to see this portrayed in a book.

This book also had a mystery in it, my favorite! Sure, I was able to work out who our villian was, but it was still fun to read. Plus it ends on a pretty intense cliffhanger that leads us right into the next book. This has been on of my favorites from this series thus far.

Many thanks to Bree Wolf who shared an electronic copy of this book with me in exchange for an honest review, all opinions above are my own.

Amazing!
This book is based on a brilliant idea that forces one (very gently) to look at things through someone else's eyes, to feel what they feel emotionally and to understand, in a small way, what it is like to have Asperber's Syndrome and what it is like to live with someone with this syndrome.
I tutor two little boys with this syndrome and found this story at times very enlightening and others quite true to form.
The story itself is well written with clear and precise situations that make it very interesting and I couldn't put it down.
I loved the strengths shown in Richard's character as well as his frustrations and at times total helplessness. His wife, Evelyn has trained virtually all her life in the medical field but being a female, her qualification goes unrecognized.
I truly loved everything about this story and so am happy to recommend it to you, a potential reader and hope you will enjoy it as much as I have.
I read an Advance Reader's copy of the ebook and my review above is given voluntarily and it is unbiased.

I love Evelyn and Richard! Evelyn is such a strong woman who knows her mind and will not be intimidated. So many times I thought she'd just walk away in frustration, but she always stood talk and spoke her mind. Richard is such a sweet misunderstood man. I love that he puts his trust in Evelyn to help him understand and that she takes the time to truly understand him. They have a beautiful relationship. I'm definitely anxious for the rest of Claudia's story, but will have to be patient. Another great book to this series.

This was pretty "meh" for me. While I liked the main character and the book itself was exactly what I wanted from it, I had a few problems. 1. The other major character of Claudia was clearly s0meone I was supposed to feel sympathetic towards and I just...didn't. Which is ridiculous cuz she WAS in a situation that you SHOULD feel sympathy for. However, despite the narrating characters pointing out how she wasn't a spoiled child but a woman in a bad situation that couldn't win, I really couldn't help but read every one of her lines as a spoiled child in a bad situation that couldn't win. 2. The next book in this series focuses on Claudia and while I understand some set up for that, this entire book really felt like the main plot was exposition for Claudia's book, while the main characters who I DID like were kind of a secondary plot. 3. While the beginning was fine, towards the end this started to become very melodramatic. Which, I can deal with a little melodrama, but this just got ridiculous. It was one thing after another, and it felt very bad soap opera-y. 4. Every single one of these characters was too progressive for the time period. I'm not saying I want to read about racist sexist jerks, but the fact of the matter is that I at least want to see them STRUGGLE to look past the society they were raised in. But instead every single one of these characters was progressive and very "well, that's how the world is now, and we cannot change it in a day, but someday the world will hopefully realize that all are equal and fairness should rule and people should be able to make choices to be happy." A nice sentiment, but the big problem was that this really made the characters feel very anachronistic. I am ok with reading about women in the past who are working on changing minds and taking steps forward and pushing barriers, but I also want to read about their own difficulties and the difficulties of those around them to see past what their society has taught them since birth. We have a woman trying to be a doctor in this book at there was basically only one character who had an issue with that. Which is just too unrealistic for me. There was so little opposition that I didn't even get girl power feels from this.
So, while I did not hate it, I did not love it, and I was left feeling like the major romance of this book was really a subplot for setting things up for the romance of the next book, which was not what I came for. So two stars.

Love flourishes when opposites attract and empathy and the analytical collide!!!

Sensitively and cleverly written tale with an engaging plot, dipped in suspense, and a fascinating array of characters brimming with vulnerability.
Everlyn is a fabulous character struggling with the prejudices of establishing recognition as a female doctor, despite her immense skill and compassion in the field. She's incredibly driven and a feisty champion to those she deems in need which inevitably leads her to clash with the hero. Steadfast in the comfort of following duty above feeling, Richard's brutally honest logic and found solace in the structure of rules, unfortunately gives the impression of him being coldhearted because of the shield of ice he grasps to hide his perceived social inadequacies. As a result, the intimate scenes between the pair swing between the deliciously compelling, highly touching and sweet to overwhelming tension fuelled by turbulent attraction and stomach churning misunderstandings that boil and simmer to the point of volcanic eruption. A combination that really kept me entertained and addictively glued until the end.

Overall I found myself fighting back tears, my heart melting and enthralled/enlightened by the debilitating condition Richard suffers from. The emotions conveyed really revealed the frustration, confusion and torment of the condition and sensitively portrayed a refreshing insight into the daily struggles and painful consequences of misunderstandings and the fear of opening yourself up to the possibility of rejection and ridicule.

A great read that really surprised me with how much the lead characters got under my skin and touched an emotional chord with me - compelling me to dig deeper and truly try to empathise with the couple's struggles to find understanding through honesty and exposure to vulnerability.
One of my favourite books in the series so far; one that is as refreshingly turbulent as it is endearing!

Although he does not overly care for society's nonsense.

Several setbacks include her father's apprentice, who insists that he knows more than she does with matters of the medical field. He does not win her heart but instead wins Richard, heart.
Just as their new life as partners on Christmas Day her husband is poisoned & almost dies. And Evelyn with fear is the only one that is willing to try to save him.
See what transpires in the beginning of their new lives. Who is Richard enemy to want him dead,
Beautiful story on how to people grow to admire, respect & love one another. Also what determination, strength & love win over hate.

Goodread!

Unexpected twists and turns abound in this book. We have the grudgingly eccentric viscount who does everything in his power to keep his uncertanties well- hidden from the rest if tne world while taking care of all he is charged with, as well as a frustrated but capable young doctor wannabe in a time when women were not allowed to write books, do any sort of research, speak or act professionally, anything that might show a brain being used, never mind become a doctor. While Evelyn's father, a doctor who taught his daughter everything he knew as well as giving her complete access to all his medical books and papers, encouraged her in chosen lifework. When asked by the viscount to attend his sister's illness, the doctor took his daughter along, and she was able to quickly nurse her back to health. She also realized that she was drawn to the viscount, despite his rather brusk way with people. Nothing could come of it, of course. The doctor and his daughter were not society, as was the viscount and his family, despite the fact that the viscount's father had considered the doctor to be his dearest friend before his death and the two families were often togetner.
All the makings of a great regency romance lie in this book. Ms Wolf has done a fantastic job again. Thanks for an incredibly goodread.

This book was given to me. I hope others will chose it as well.

I couldn't find anything engaging about the characters in this one. The female main character was another one of this author's anachronistic feminists who could have worked in an early 1900's setting but was placed where she just didn't fit. Make them time travelers or something!
The male main character had some form of autism or some kind of neurological disorder... I don't even know what that was supposed to be, but the female main character was "fixing" him through slow logical explanation of emotional cues. Ummmm. That's just not how that works. It was super awkward and having grown up with someone with Asperger's, I found it a little offensive.
The villains and the "punishment" make very little sense, once again, the author hasn't done much research into the time period where life in prison would have meant a very short and miserable life whereas transportation would have been the gentler alternative. Yeah, they didn't have nice punishments back then, deal with it.
The situations with the sister and the 'are you kidding me?' cliffhanger ending just ruined the whole thing.
What was up with the Victorian era tracheotomy? Infection alone...
Anyway, these books just drive me nuts. I hoped the author would improve after a while and her writing actually has gotten better but I can't suspend my grasp of reality long enough to fall into these.

This book in the series was prefaced with a note from the author about writing about a character with Asperger’s. I thought that was good to include, as well as the information included there. People with Asperger’s have difficulty reading facial and social cues as well as interpreting gestures. In the novel, this character is portrayed as significantly socially isolated, even from his own loving family. To everyone, he is just a hard man, cold, heartless.

In the novel, it contrasts the phenomenon we still see today in the difficulty and struggles women have to be viewed on the same plane as their male counterpart. Evelyn has worked alongside her father her whole life, learning doctoring from him. His new apprentice is far lesser experienced and lacking in the field, but sought out above and seen superior to Evelyn and her skillset. And she is a phenomenal doctor that no one will ever acknowledge. Not even the man who’s haunted her dreams since the last house call at the manor.

Richard Davenport is the Viscount Ashwood, and all see him as uncaring, unfeeling. He follows the rules to the T. Even if it means pain for those he loves. After his pregnant-with-no-husband sister faints, Richard calls for Dr. Procten, who in turn shows up with his new apprentice and daughter, Evelyn. He had seen her before when his father died and his mother took to her bed. She stayed for weeks and cared for the dowager viscountess. And she has been a woman he avoided while she was there. He…felt things. As it turns out, Dr. Procten and the late viscount had an arrangement for their children. Now that it is made known, they are set to choose to either honor it…or not. As much as Richard hates what he feels his father saw him as, he is honor-bound to uphold the contract.

Eventually Richard is able to overcome some of the barriers of his condition with Evelyn’s help. And even with a pregnant-with-no-husband sister who would be a pariah if it ever were to be known, Richard and Evelyn both do their best to find the right solution for Claudia, who is withering under Richard’s house arrest. She is a social butterfly; she thrives on people. There is clearly only one course of action here that will protect Claudia, and it is a cause of issue between them.
There is drama of all sorts. Family drama. Personal drama. Relationship drama. An almost mad-man semi-fiance. A mysterious attempted murder. A fight for life. Intrigue! But little romance or steam. I did like the playful way Evelyn and Richard are able to build in their marriage.

This is a historical romance between a lord and a doctor's daughter. They have to get over their rocky start as they end up married and figure out what to do with the hero's sister's child. This romance started off slow for me but really improved with the character development. This book could have so easily been misunderstanding after misunderstanding, treading the same ground over and over again, but it really surprised me but introducing outside conflict and having the two of them talk to each other to make sure they were understood. The author's note at the beginning made it clear that Richard was written to be on the autistic spectrum, so he had trouble reading facial expressions and social cues, and I appreciated how Evelyn handled it by changing her own behaviour and communication skills, rather than expecting Richard to suddenly understand what he never had. I also appreciated how Richard had love and support before Evelyn, even though they couldn't understand fully what he was going through.

I do wish the ending conflict had been expanded on just a little more and as I said, the beginning was very slow (though I appreciated how everything was linked and the easy route wasn't taken with the culprit). This book really does make me want to check out the rest of the series though.

3.5 stars!

From unfeeling to feeling. From fear of rejection to loving and being loved, this story has it all. Mystery, suspense, love, faith, and heartache. You will love it though. Bree is such a wonderful author you can't go wrong with any of her books. While this is a stand alone book, you should really read it in order to get the back stories of some of the characters in this one.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The plot was original and the characters developed, especially the Hero, Richard Davenport, Viscount Ashwood. He can't seem to be able to read people and they think him unfeeling. Only his family seems to love him, even though he can't see it and has a hard time with it.

The heroine, Evelyn Procten is the local doctor's daughter and he has taught her everything he knows about being a doctor. However, society does not recognize her as a doctor as women can't be doctors. Evelyn proves them all wrong as you will see when you read this book. And you just have to read this book. It's that wonderful. So pick up a copy and get to reading. Enjoy!

I was given a complimentary copy of this book by the author without expectation of a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are purely my own and I voluntarily leave this review.
