I thought it was the end when my car flew off a cliff. But a beautiful goddess stepped in and offered me a second chance.
Now I have the power of light itself within me, and that power is growing.
Which is just as well, because I have to battle villains, monsters, mutants and more. Not my type of thing, if I’m honest, but it’s about more than just me.
It’s about Bree, Amara, and the goddess herself, among others. Powerful women in their own right, and to keep them on my side, I have to be seen to be playing by their rules.
I’m not a natural born superhero, but just maybe, I can become something more.
Beyond Superpowered is a full length, 75,000 word isekai superhero novel with both fantasy and science fiction elements. It contains a definite sense of progression, a ton of violence, untraditional relationships, and an MC capable of actual growth. It is the first of a series, with book 2 to be published on November 18.
Not bad. A good addition to the genre but nothing great stands out. MC is a guy who is trying to kill himself. He has a brain tumor and doesn't want to live. He drives himself off a cliff and then in midair he is visited by a goddess and offers him a chance to be her champion. He thinks he is dreaming so why not. She picked him because he has been known to do the right thing but is also a little selfish. She states she has had champions before, but they get killed trying to play the hero. That's great but she states they have one the battle but lost the war. She wants someone that can do the right thing but also be pragmatic. He wakes up in a new world that is similar to ours but different. The people dress like the 1950s but there is other technology. There are also different species and people with powers. On this world there is a procedure that can give you powers but at the same time give you other characteristics. Elf ears, horns, etc. So, everyone is human but have been altered. Not everyone does this because the procedure is dangerous. 80% survival rate for women but only 15 percent for men. Meaning that there are many more women supers. One of the big problems is one of the only ways to get these powers is to have a cooperation give them to you. Once that happens, they basically own you. There are a couple of independent heroes but not many. The Mc shows up and ends up fighting some monsters and meets one of these Independant heroes. The system here is weird. Heroes get paid by what they do. Everyone has insurance that is used to pay the heroes when they are in trouble. The first one there gets the biggest claim and the most money. The use satellites to record events to verify these claims. Overall though the characters were interesting, the story was okay, and the magic system was descent. I would continue the series.
The mc is described as selfish, but then spends the entire book acting in selfless ways. The mc is so hard headed that he kills himself instead of letting his cancer "win," and with an iron will born out of his military career, but is then led around by the nose by a group of women as if he's a horny teenager with no sense of self. It almost feels like the mc was brainwashed when he was sent to the other world and the story tries to hand wave off those concerns, but does a poor job of it, so poor that it actually highlighted the issue for me and caused me even greater frustration. That being said, the writing quality is otherwise solid and the other characters are at least consistent.
Morally gray protagonist, but leaning towards the good side.
Constantly advancing plot. (Could slow down a bit so the mc could get a handle on their powers, but oh well)
There wasn't 10 sex scenes before the mc actually gets to know the girl, there is an attempt to start a real relationship before jumping right into it.
So far, the characters have some depth.
The fatal flaw that loses this book a star: The author occasionally makes the characters ignore all common sense to create a conflict that should have been avoided fairly easily. Examples include:
Gray completely let's his guard down when entering his hotel room. He should have been tipped off by Sariah leaving him, she always leaves before something major is about to happen. He should also have still been cautious because Omicron had kidnapped him twice in the past two days already. In the ensuing fight he doesn't think to try using his powers until he had already been shocked by stun batons 20-30 times and lost most of his potency.
While infiltrating Omicron with "not-Herman" as his hostage, NH goes from scared and defeated to suddenly being smug and holding back a smile when he tells Gray the server room is through the door ahead. Gray notices this change in behavior and then brushes it off as inconsequential and goes through the door anyway.
When they go through the door, NH rushes ahead to a console and starts monologuing while opening up a huge capsule and revealing a huge Super. NH explains that this super is very strong and has the combination of the powers of 3 Supers. Then the huge super, Herman 17, takes off the cables attached to it and steps out of the capsule to begin the fight. During this whole time, which had to have lasted at least a minute or two, Bree and Gray just stand there and don't try to stop NH or H17 at any point before H17 is ready to fight.
Scenes like these are very frustrating as a reader because it seems like the author couldn't think of a way to organically advance the plot so they have to turn off the brains of their characters for it to work.
Also, on the typo front, there was one mistake that stuck out to me. In the scene at Amara's house, before they infiltrate Omicron, the characters there are Gray, NH, Bree, Amara, and Dahlia. However, Sahria randomly gets mentioned as sitting in a chair.
All in all, I will definitely continue reading the series, but I hope the author figured out how to advance the plot in certain spots without temporarily dumbing down the characters.
At my request I received a copy of this audiobook in order to give a fair and unbiased review.
Genre: Isekai superhero action filled slow burn harem Power dynamics in harem: Early to say outside of mutual attraction. MC is assertive. Explicit/adult material: One explicit scene.
Summary: Grey has cancer and has decided to end it on his own terms. As he drives off the cliff a beautiful being pops into existence next to him and offers him a new life somewhere else, with a new set of super powers. He accepts and is soon involved in his first crisis where he meets another super and soon join her and her team. As grey gets to know his new powers and his new sexy team, a nefarious plot starts to unfold.
Narration Voice diversity: Each person have different voices that are easily recognised. Pacing and intonation: The story is well told. Sex scenes: Well done. Overall Narration: 4.5/5 stars.
The book’s strengths. - I like that even though the culture supports harem the MC takes time to get to know the girls - I like that the girls have goals and lives outside of the MC - The villain was interesting and relatable (should I be worried?) - The narration
The book’s weaknesses. - I didn't notice anything I would have liked differently
My first time reading something from this author. Not bad lads! I enjoyed it. I’m glad the MC isn’t some chad. But I am glad he kinda had the “seed” and then started to get OP… I’m curious as to what would happen with onyx. I hope we haven’t seen the last of him. I’m at least curious to see if he’ll appear in the next book. The women are interesting and I think make great characters for a harem. The goddess is very enjoyable. I loved her personality. The one thing though, scratch that… there’s a couple of things our guy did that’s completely idiotic and that’s he didn’t change hotels… I mean come on bro, they know where you live and two he leaves loose ends behind… Herman would have been put to sleep 💀☠️. 100% my son. You don’t let that kinda person walk around. No sir. But with that being said I really enjoyed the book. I hope we don’t have to deal with more attempted kidnappings though… that kinda got old… also, shocker, gigantaur and the invisible woman would have been 💀 as well. But I’m just a simple pragmatic man. Let’s check out the next book. Onward lads!
Not your average goddess giving an MC an opportunity at a new life + superpowers. She's instead a bit sensual, a bit of a flirt as well a maybe a bit of an uptown girl, hanging with a downtown guy.
The MC does not identify as a hero, being rather pragmatic, but as Kenny Rogers sang, its good to know when to walk away and when to run. He meets up with a few hotties right away and surprise the wolves in sheep disguises immediately introduce themselves. The MC did what was necessary while working to increase his power, yet wasnt as ruthless or as destructive as he could have chosen to be.
The story was a quick, light read with an intimate encounter at the end. Thankfully this encounter flowed with the story and wasnt just an excuse to show how studly the MC was, multiple times, unlike too many in the genre.
New series And a fun one. A light harem Series Set in a world full of superheroes. The MC is brought here With his knowledge But not given A definitive mission or task. I assume Some of this will come to like in the future. The characters are fun and mostly unique. Certainly the powers are. The sexy scenes are middle of the road nothing special nothing over the top. Doesn't get in the way of the story too much. Unlike some of the other in the genre of late the hair aspect is not a requirement for power growth. Just a side effect of the creation of the local powered. A Large male to female Imbalance. Of course that means most of the supervillains are female And require a punch to the face. Still an enjoyable read I will continue to read the series until it's not.
I'm an unrepentant fan of power fantasy. I like power fantasy, there's nothing wrong with liking power fantasy, power fantasy can be fun. It gives the author a chance to make the story more interesting than just another higher level villain as well. More nuance in the characters. It almost forces it honestly
This book was pretty standard first in a series book. Introduces the main characters backstory and power set, introduces a couple love interests and their power sets, begins building their relationship, and has a random throwaway villain. I enjoyed the book start to finish. It was exactly what I wanted the first book in the series to be
It has problems. The idea is fine. The setting has potential. But the characters are a mess. They are bland and very poorly developed. All the corporate villains are interchangeable, while the heroes are one dimensional. The relationships are explained with one throw away sentence, that is just lazy and unoriginal. The goddess aspect is ignored from a series perspective, that could have been a hook for book two. If this was not a start of a series it would be a one star, but there is an idea of something here. It just needs a lot of work.
Didn’t know what to expect with this book but am definitely happy I read it. Great MC who while a hero isn’t the goody goody Dudley do right that a lot of other supers tend to be. While not a villain he definitely falls more into the gray area of things. Which makes him a great character to read about since he will do the things that we all would love to do at times but don’t because our moral compass doesn’t allow it. Or more likely getting in trouble prevents us from doing so. Already queueing up the next book in this series to read ASAP.
I've gone through so many mediocre books lately that I've bailed on half way through, I decided I would finish this no matter what. Not sure if that was a great idea, as it was not enjoyable to force myself to finish the second half. Nothing about this book stands out or is impressive. It's all been done before, but fair enough, not expecting Shakespeare. The protags power is basically just wish fulfillment. Whatever he thinks about doing, he does - no rules or structure as far as I can tell. Anyways, snoozetown is done, on to something else!
I really enjoyed this. Usually these types of books are cliche and one note. This was fun. A couple things I’ve seen before but with some new paint and a different setting. Semi modern steampunk like world that’s similar ish to what we know but somewhat not. Supers having a strange attraction to eachother. The mc actually getting captured and not being a walking cataclysm just because a goddess gave him powers. I like it. Good entry
The first two female characters you meet are utterly sexist. 1 in 20 supers are male and supposedly most of the male supers are villains? This is right after the MC and said sexist female character survive a murder attempt from two different FEMALE supers. A murder attempt that the female character only survived thanks to the MC. Other than the out right sexism, this book is quite good.
Seriously enjoyed this book. I like books where the MC is transferred to another world. He doesn’t start out overpowered but it looks like he will keep getting stronger. Storyline is very good and it’s definitely slow burn but that’s fine with me,it fit right in with the story telling. Definitely looking forward to book 2!!!
This is a very good example for the "O Sh_t,I'm not dead" way to get started on a good story. It was a bit slow in a few places, but it will reach out, grab you, and take you away for another adventure. The storyline is ready to takeoff and make all of us happy.
Harem not usually my thing but I am a sucker for super hero genre...a good solid beginning... I'm usually pulled to litrpg but I will grab the next and see where I am... Recommend JD Glasscock Author of the Series Blood Brothers and the Dream and Embers and Ash
Very interesting world. Liked the Mc, just like his name implies he is more morally gray then you would expect from a hero but it works. Liked the powers and the love interests were nice. Looking forward to the next book.
I liked this one. The characters are well written and the story is interesting. No spicy bits u til the end, which is good. I recommend you pick it up. It is a good solid book, and I will read the next one when it comes out.
Really fun isekai superhero story. Great action and adventure. Fair amount of grammar errors so really more like a 4.5 but didn’t detract from the overall story. Looking forward to the next one.
I dis enjoy this. Liked the slower romance as well. He is already above level 5, but when is power is spent he is weak until recovered. Meet onto next and see how a hero (male with harem) operates.
A pleasant mix of super powers and fantasy magic !!!!! An interesting and intriguing world the author is developing and I for one can't wait to see what comes about next!!!
I enjoyed this book I understood the main character drive due to my own issues, and liked the switch to the jump to the new world. I want more information on the world and the people. So I look forward to reading more in the new books to come.
I really enjoyed this short novel, it has action and some sexual characters to keep you reading. The storyline is fantasy believable and the author tells it well. I look forward to the next one.
Decent example of the genre (supers/isekai) but nothing really stands out. I don't want my time back from reading it, but I feel I've invested as much as I care to in this story.
