Rate this book
Jade was one of the strongest mages in the world, boasting the coveted post of Court Wizard thanks to his standout abilities. Unfortunately, mysterious events got him fired from that gig, and now he's the newest teacher at a magic school way out in the boonies. Worse yet, he's in charge of a class of losers and misfits who've earned the scorn of the academy's elite. Channeling both his skill as a royal magician and his earnest desire to help his students achieve their dreams, can Jade turn this class of rejects into a force to be reckoned with?

I actually found this very enjoyable.

If I sound surprised, it's for a few different reasons:
- This isn't really one of my usual genres, but I was intrigued by the super long title and the summary
- I ordered this a while ago - April 2022, with delivery in October 2022, but am only just now getting around to reading it, because
- For some reason, Volume 2 has been delayed repeatedly, to the point where it eventually got shoved to January 2025 - for reference, it is still 2023 as I'm typing this - which makes me wonder if the series just got cancelled after one volume, or if something weird is going on behind the scenes.

To be perfectly honest, I was finally reading this one today just so I could clear it off my shelf, cancel my Volume 2 preorder, and move on, but now I'm annoyed because I liked it.

To be frank, the short story included at the end, written by the author of the original light novel series, was terrible. So maybe the issue is with that series, or struggles with the adaptation, or something along those lines. (How did Seven Seas even come to license something that had so little material ready to print?)

But the manga version is engaging and full of interesting characters, so I would have liked to see where it went, and how Jade dealt with his class of misfit magic school dropouts. It might get a bit dull as it goes on, and the art style isn't my absolute favorite - Jade is a bit too baby-faced for a 29 year old super powerful magician - but I suppose I'll just hang on for now and see if Volume 2 really does show up in 2025.

Jade's dramatic backstory of being fired as a court magician was ultimately a little anticlimactic, since it seems it all boiled down to a single confrontation that didn't seem all that bad. He was protecting a friend from an unfair arrest, and I suppose threatened someone in a position of authority - enough authority to get his job taken away, although the logistics of that were kind of unclear.

The important part is that he's now in a backwater town, teaching first years who aren't terribly good at magic, and who are treated terribly by their classmates and other teachers as a result.

There were a lot of good reflections on discrimination, isolation, and injustice throughout, with Jade really warming up to his role as someone who can protect, inspire, and truly help students who need someone to believe in them. The headmaster seems to firmly be on his side - a bit mysteriously, in the manga, which is why the whoopie cushion jokes in the short story were so weirdly out of place. In the manga, I felt like I'd want to find out more about him, and what made him want to hire someone who'd been so looked down on by their society. In the short story, he was just...strange and annoying.

May not be a keeper series in the long run, but I would like to find out what happens next, so we'll see if it ever arrives.

This is the same cookie-cutter "high fantasy" (but somehow NOT "isekai") manga that is every other book on the manga shelf at the store, just with a main character with a particularly punchable face.

Yet I actually want to see where this goes, since the art is competent, and the MC (Jade) actually wants to give the problem children a chance. It's like an extended version of Rimuru teaching Shizu's pupils (but with less slime). I don't know if I would recommend it to anyone yet; normally a not-completely-terrible series takes me a few books to make a decision either way.

I really enjoyed this and am excited to read more.
It's about a powerful wizard who was low born. He worked hard but people gave him hate for his humble birth. He ended up fired for standing up for a friend.
His childhood friend got him a job but he got stuck with the worst magic using kids. I am hoping he can turn things around and get them to excel.
The set up of this reminds me of the movie Renaissance man with Danny Devito. Was one of my faves as a kid. Hoping this series continues those vibes. I am here for it.

Now THAT's my kind of fantasy/magic manga! The main character was written very well, the premise itself was fun and I liked that the author actually included Jade's story of how he got fired as a court wizard, instead of giving us snippets over a few volumes.

The art was very well drawn, the story kept me interested throughout the volume and I felt there was enough magic and fantasy elements to keep me intrigued. It's a series that I would purchase the physical books.

I recommend the series to everyone!

Pacing feels off

I love that we get so much content in the first volume, especially without the manipulation of a cliffhanger ending, but the pacing of the story feels rushed and shallow somehow. I love this kind of story though, so I may get the next volume to see if the pace feels better now that the introductions are out of the way.

A fun read with a great design of the environment and characters. A little disappointed there was not more interaction with the students just yet but I expect that to change with the next book. Overall am very happy I got this.

6/10

Very basic plot so far. Felt like it could’ve been longer. Extremely generic vibe so far. Still decently good quality, so 6 over a 5/10.

I really like Jade and I wonder how his story will continue. Hidden strength and casual competence are my favorite things about heroes and he has them in spades!

Decent as a power-fantasy, but doesn't seem particularly interested in either teaching or magic as a thing on their own, so I'm not going to continue. (It's fine to have bad teachers to root against, but like, they should be bad in the way that actual bad teachers exist - there's plenty of horrible options to choose from.)
