A dragon terrified of being discovered by the government, Ravenna Drake is constantly on the move. When the woman who raised her gets cancer, Ravenna trades her nomadic work restoring black market magical goods for a steady job. But her cautious life ends after her name is found at the scene of a werewolf murder.
Dr. Ian Chen, a sorcerer bonded to a powerful relic, works for the government treating supernatural citizens. He insists on investigating when his patient’s body is discovered completely drained of blood. His search leads him to the beautiful but frustrating Ravenna Drake, who refuses to stay away from the case or follow his instructions.
As more bloodless bodies surface, threats from secret societies and corrupt politicians force the dragon and the sorcerer to work together. If Ravenna and Ian can’t catch the killer, the people they love the most may be the next to die.

SEARCHING is the first book in the Dragons of New York series and is first and foremost a mystery. Bloodless bodies are showing up and Ravenna Drake is linked to each scene by a piece of thread, an email, her name. Ian Chen wants to trust her but until he knows she's not a suspect, he won't do anything.
Told from both Ian and Ravenna's perspectives, it takes you into the story, giving you details about both their lives prior to them meeting. It also tells you how the case is moving along, what they have found, and what still needs answering. Whether you get those answers is another story.
The world-building was descriptive, giving clear examples of prejudice and how living in a world where magic exists might not be accepted by everyone. The pacing is smooth, and the story flows to its natural conclusion. There is a HFN ending with the case unsolved so I am presuming their story will continue on in the next book.
A good start to a series that will leave you with questions unanswered. If you like paranormal mysteries, then I can definitely recommend this one. ** same worded review will appear elsewhere **
* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and the comments here are my honest opinion. * Merissa Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books! Nov 1, 2022
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
First time read the author's work?: Yes
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
So my favourite things about paranormal urban romance are the law, the history, the art, the dresses, the illegal black market, the magic blending with our world, and the problems that ensue. This one has all that plus dragons. And the Dragon has an actual draconic personality, rather than just being a shifter with a totally human outlook.
Sweet romance that felt real with real relational problems about to lonely people who have been ostracised from their communities for one reason or another, finding someone to connect with after a long time.
Had some weird magic sex, and that’s never really my thing. So grain of salt as I’m not target audience. But the sexual ethics were pretty sound all the same. No real complaints.
After reading the summary for Searching it didn’t take me long to know that I had to read this one. Oh, and let me tell you that summary does not in any way do the book justice as it was so much better than the summary indicated that it would be.
I love the world that was created for Searching. I like that it has more than one paranormal creature. I like that the paranormal creatures are all living together in the same world and even working together. Searching is told from more than one point of view. I like getting the story from more than one character. I feel as if I get more of the story that way.
Searching is filled with lots of mystery as more and more bloodless bodies keep popping up all over the place. A dragon shifter and a sorcerer must work together to solve the murders.
Who is draining all these people of their blood and why? That is just one of the questions I had while reading Searching. It had me racing to the end to find out who was draining all these people of their blood.
I would recommend Searching to anyone who likes vampires, dragons, werewolves, or any paranormal creatures. Grab your copy of Searching today!
