A must-have for visitors to Portugal's capital city!
Like most of its competitors – Lonely Planet, Blue Guide, Fodor’s and National Geographic, for example - , DK Eyewitness Travel’s LISBON is designed to help you plan and get the most from your vacation stay in the area. But, for this lover of international travel, it is the photography, the hand-drawn 3D streetscape graphics and the regional and neighbourhood organizations that separate DK Eyewitness from the rest of the field.
My first trip to the area was a full region trip out of Lisbon that included day tours to Faro in the Algarve, Coimbra, Evora, Braga and Porto. Mission accomplished with the invaluable assistance of DK Eyewitness' marvelous guide PORTUGAL.
The second trip (one that I am looking forward to in March of 2022) is a much more leisurely week long investigation of Lisbon with the purpose of taking in many of the sights that the previous day trip simply didn’t allow for PLUS a more relaxed approached to the tapas, Portugal's varied culinary delights, the burgeoning craft beer industry, the wines, the sherries, the bars and the restaurants. Obviously, a guide book dedicated to a single city will be much more detailed than the section dedicated to Lisbon in the guide book for the entire country. SO ... using this guide as a starting point to slightly more extensive investigation on the Internet, I feel confident that DK Eyewitness has once more proven its worth as an addition to my travel library.
I've used Eyewitness guides for quite a few city trips now and they really are good, way better than Lonely Planet and actually better than any other travel guide brand. Color photos and illustrations, compact maps of each area, and a waterproof map of the whole city, each section comes with recommendations for cafes nearby. The guide is structured in such a logical way that it makes planning an itinerary really easy. There are also "specialty" guides for those into specific things the city is famous for. Plus of course a short history of the country and city itself and information about what to see in the surrounding areas.
This book does a great job highlighting major and even some minor attractions in Lisbon. It also has some decent walking routes via map of different lengths in assorted neighborhoods, giving readers some options. There’s also a decent section of practical information about Portugal, relating to power outlets, driving, savings tips, etc, in the back. The book isn’t great with information about getting between different parts of the city, nor does it have much information about places to eat or stay. This guide is definitely useful, but doesn’t seem like it can be used on its own to plan a trip.
One of the most charismatic and vibrant cities in Europe, Lisbon has an incredible mix of historic museums, colorful buildings, eclectic music and nightlife, squares, and cafés to watch the world go by. Hop on one of the city’s yellow trams, see a traditional Fado show or take a day trip to the fairy tale village of Sintra. DK Lisbon is the ideal pocket companion for your trip to the gorgeous Portuguese capital. It was a beautiful city. This guide was perfect to stroll the city and learn about it to the fullest.
I like this series of guides. Unfortunately this edition is rather out of date. Do no try doing the 90-minute walk in the Alfama - it is no longer possible to do. However, the other information was very helpful and the illustrations are a bonus.
This is the 9th Eyewitness Guide that I've used. It is not up to the standards of the others I read previously.
Other locations in the series give extensive detail on all attractions within a section of the city. Instead the Lisbon guide just provides one or two "must sees" and a few other places of interest.
Travelling in Amsterdam, London, Paris, Rome, Greece and other locations, I never saw an interesting place that wasn't mentioned in the Eyewitness guide. The Lisbon guide omits many interesting places to visit. One example is the small but fascinating Roman Theater Museum.
Most of the other guides I've used started each section of the city with a map of that area. These maps are usually better than the free tourist maps given out in the cities. The Lisbon guide, at least in the kindle edition, links you to Google Maps. If I wanted that format, I would not have purchased to Eyewitness guide.
There are many other small things that were disappointing in this guide.
Overall the DK Eyewitness guide is completely dissapointing. I will have to look closer at the guides before buying them in the future.
My first Eyewitness guide. I bought this second-hand and only paid £3 for it, which is good, because I would have been annoyed if I had paid the full price of £10.99. It was good for reading about the various sights, but difficult to use. I did not find it intuitive, and it didn't even cover the whole city, just four parts of it. It's practical sections, such as the restaurant guide, were uninspiring and very difficult to read, with no photos or features. Not recommended.
I do recommend this book. My visit to Lisbon wouldn't have been the same without it. That said, it focuses on the north bank, with Alfama, Baixa, Chiado and the Bairro Alto. The place highlights, travellers' information were excellent. The maps were invaluable.
Whereever I travel, I will hereafter look for an Eyewitness Travel Guide. Lisbon is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.
I took two books along on my recent visit to Lisbon - this one and Rick Steve's Spain and Portugal. They complemented each other in their coverage and both are fairly small for ease in carrying around. This DK guide has great photos and short description paragraphs about the sites and the history.
