My first read for May & what a cracker it is. This is the third in the Tangled Web series but reads well as a standalone. Plenty of backstory is given to you but, personally, I would start at the beginning to see why this story has the impact it does on Ziggy, Lolly & those around them.

Ziggy is taken off the case he longs to investigate & is instead partnered with a Met officer investigating financial misdemeanours including money laundering. Needless to say, he is not impressed & continues to investigate off the books.

A surprisingly emotional police procedural which is well written but leaves you hanging at the end. Can’t wait until the next one.

This started off with me thinking…. seems like your regular cop story, a bit formulaic. Detective’s best pal gets killed. He is told to stay off the case. And then, wow, I fell in love with the characters and became really invested in the story.

I loved how Lolly and Ziggy get their names.

There is some really interesting back story in the middle parts of the book, which makes you relate to and feel sad for the victim. This section also helps you understand, and empathise with Ziggy too.

As the story unfolds it becomes more and more exciting! Ziggy is determined to bring justice, to discover who has killed his best friend Lolly and all the while his job, and the safety of his family is at stake…

The more I read, the more I wanted to turn the page, (metaphorically speaking as I was reading an ARC copy!)

Highly recommended for those who like a fast-paced well written crime thriller, a financial thriller with a human touch. This is part 3 in a series – I have read this novel only – it can be read as a standalone but I’d recommend reading all three books.

I could say more but I better not in case I spoil it for you. Do read this! I would be happy to read this author’s work again.

Many thanks to the author and to Donna Morfatt at DLM tours for including me in this tour and for the advanced reader’s copy.

I loved it. The characters were flawed but believable and I rooted for Ziggy to find his best friend's killer. Ms. Yaffe has a talent for developing an exciting story and drawing the perfect characters to bring it to life, making it come alive as you read each page. I was surprised by the identity of the killer. If you are looking for an exciting crime thriller, this book is a must. I received an advance copy of this book via Story Origin and I am voluntarily leaving my review.

Devastated by the death of his best friend, Detective Inspector Andrew ‘Ziggy’ Thornes is out for justice. At any cost.
I really enjoyed this book. Twisty like a rollercoaster. Gripped from the start. I love Ziggy how he wouldn't give up looking for the killers. I did not see that coming. I do hope there is more to come. 5*.

Well bloody hell what a read this was. Safe to say I wasn't expecting that!!!
I have loved the first two books in the series but this has gone up a whole other level. Quite hard to fully review without giving away spoilers.
Ziggy is working on a case that is personal, and is seconded to a money laundering case, but begins to wonder if they are linked.
The action properly ramps up and the reveals are shocking and totally from left field with the the final couple of chapters leaving you breathless.
Characterisation is fantastic. I feel like I know every character. Main or peripheral. I lived this story with them as if I were sitting in amongst them.
I flew through it. The one more chapter effect in full force until I finished. I would recommend you read at least book 2 before you read this but equally book 1 because they are all brilliant.

This was a great police procedural. I think I liked it more because the main character, Ziggy, had a stake in the investigation so it made it really personal for him. Since he was so invested in finding out what happened to Lolly, I was invested in what happened to her. There is more than one layer of deception happening here, but that’s all that I will say to that so that I don’t spoil the book! This book is broken up into three parts, the first and the third are from Ziggy’s point of view of the investigation, and the second part is Lolly’s point of view of what happened to her leading up to her death. Personally, I preferred Ziggy’s chapters just because there was more action in them. Overall, a good read! A perfect murder mystery.

An emotional thriller with relatable characters!
This is the third investigative adventure of DI Thornes or 'Ziggy' and it is the best one so far.
The novel starts straight away with the murder of Ziggy's best friend and his race to find the responsible. As he's taken out of the investigation due to conflict of interest his frustration is very palpable and real and I shared his emotions whilst reading.
I highly appreciated the part dedicated to Lolly's story as I felt more connected to her and her death and thought it really added depth to the novel.
As the case unfolds I have to say that I had worked it out well before the explanation, which I was disappointed about, although I still enjoyed the book. Also because the author dropped a massive bombshell at the end which left me wanting to read more straight away!
If you like thrillers with enjoyable characters you would want to read this one, and I can't wait for the next one to come out.

Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read it and this is my honest review.

When we deceive by Catherine Yaffe

So this was book 3 in the series and we continued right where we left off in book two 🙌 so straight away I was engaged wanting to know where the story was going, as book two ends on a omg sort of moment 😂 this one was quite a sad story and I really felt bad for our main character Ziggy. This case truly shattered his world and he was trying so hard to put himself back together. I really liked that you got more insight into Lolly’s and Ziggy’s childhoods as that’s something I was curious about from book two. Will I be reading book 4 ? Absolutely 👍 a great mystery thriller, likeable characters and well paced. 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

When We Deceive is the 3rd thriller novel by catherine Yaffe and it is Inspector Andrew 'Ziggy' Thornes story. Ziggy and his team are working on a money laundering case and when he clocks off in the evening, he is doing his own murder investigation. He believes that there is a link between the two cases and must decide if he should break the boundaries of acceptable behaviour for a Di.
Catherine Yaffe has done it again with another brilliantly written crime thriller novel, with lots of twists and turns and leaves you guessing till the end.
I highly recommend when We Deceive and Catherine's other 2 crime thriller novels. She is a brilliant writer and I can't wait to read more by her.
💖I received a proof copy of when We Deceive from Catherine in exchange for a honest review.

When We Deceive: A fast-paced thriller that will leave you breathless (D I 'ZIGGY' THORNES CRIME THRILLER BOXSET Book 3), my second read from author Catherine Skeet-Yaffe. A 279-page suspense thriller. “I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. One not to be missed !

Another cracker of a novel by Catherine Yaffe. You can’t help liking DI Thornes, or Ziggy, who he is fondly known as. The murder of his best friend bought a lot of emotion to the story, and I was rooting for him throughout. It was full of twists and turns, with a big surprise at the end. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this series! I hope the author has another book on the horizon.

Although the third in a series and felt right at home in the pages of this story and while I don't doubt that it pays off to read the other two books first, I certainly didn't feel out of sorts by starting with this one.

DI Thornes 'Ziggy' to his friends, and pretty much everyone else, is a great character and was a joy to follow and get to know in this book. The rest of the team were fab too and I enjoyed their interactions.

In this book, Ziggy can't be on the one case that he can't stop thinking about and would give anything to be pursuing. His best friend has been murdered and there's no way he can keep away from the investigation.

This character driven story made for a fast read and developed some memorable characters - poor Lolly for one - alongside a clever and intriguing storyline. This was my first time reading one of Yaffe's books and I suspect it won't be the last.

My thanks to Zooloos Book Tours and Catherine Yaffe for letting me be a part of this blog tour.

This is my first read by this author but it wont be my last. It was well written with a compelling storyline and well developed characters.

It was more emotional than I was expecting but I think that worked really well and the book is full of tense atmosphere, suspense and twists a plenty that left me guessing the whole way through.

I couldn't put it down and I would highly recommend to anyone who loves thrillers but especially police procedural thrillers

I have been a fan of Catherine’s work for a little while now. I read and loved the first two books in the Detective Inspector Andrew ‘Ziggy’ Thornes so when I heard that Catherine was due to release another book in the series, I knew that I had to grab a copy and read it at the earliest opportunity. Well ladies and gents the wait is over because the third book in the series is called ‘When We Deceive’ and it was released on 27th April 2023. It’s another belter (cracker) of a story from Catherine, which I thoroughly enjoyed reading but more about that in a bit.

I have to say that I was drawn to this story by the fact that I saw Catherine’s name and ‘DI Ziggy Thornes ‘on the cover of a book that I knew I hadn’t read yet. As soon as I managed to get my hands on a copy I hibernated until I had read the very last word on the very last page. To say that reading this book became seriously addictive is a bit like saying that I like eating cake – in other words a massive understatement. I would pick the book up only intending to read a chapter or two but I would become so wrapped up in the story and in the lives of the different characters that I would still be sat there reading several chapters and an hour or two later. I had my own suspicions as to what was going to happen and of course I had to keep reading to see if I was on the right track or if I had wandered off in the opposite direction. The pages flew by at speed and all too quickly I reached the end of ‘When We Deceive’. I found ‘When We Deceive’ to be a tense, gripping, dramatic and emotional story, which certainly kept me guessing and kept me on the edge of my seat.

‘When We Deceive’ is superbly written but then I have come to expect nothing less from Catherine Yaffe. Catherine certainly knows how to grab the reader’s attention and draw them into what proves to be one hell of a story and then some. The story starts in a particularly memorable way and maintains a fast pace throughout. This was something of an emotional story given that the murder victim is somebody very close to Ziggy and it felt personal in some way. Ziggy is stubborn and determined and can’t help but go against official guidelines. I found that I cared about Ziggy so much that I ended up going through every emotion that he went through. I love the way in which the author makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story and at the heart of the action. That’s how I felt anyway.

In short and overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘When We Deceive’ and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. For me, ‘When We Deceive’ is the best book in the series so far. I will certainly be reading more of Catherine’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

DI Andrew ‘Ziggy’ Thornes turns up at a crime scene that is where his best friend Lolly lives. He gets into the white suit and overshoes and enters the apartment but doesn’t get much further than that before he is ordered out by his boss, DCS Whitmore, saying he can’t work this case as he knows the person involved and it would be too complicated. He rushes out and doesn’t know what he will do now that she is gone apart from working the case privately to find her killer The next day Ziggy is put onto a money laundering case which he has a little knowledge about and plus he has an informant that may be able to get some information for them which will be helpful.

One day he receives a call from Rachel, his ex-wife, saying she needed to see him and he had never heard her speak so tersely before. He said he would be there asap. When he arrives, she shows him a threatening note that was put in Ben’s backpack that afternoon with a glove left behind as well. Ziggy was being warned off the case, he said he would take them to forensics, get them checked out. In the meantime, they worked out a system to make sure Ben and Rachel were safe. Chrystal Mack, a reporter for The Yorkshire Press, came to Ziggy when she received an email warning her off the case too. She wrote down the IP address as well. He took it and said he would get it looked at. The next morning he asked Angela to have a look at it for him, she said she would. The next morning, he went to the lab early and asked Jo if she would look at the note and glove that Rachel found, she said she’d try.

Will they get who murdered Lolly? Will they get the money launderer’s?

This was a fast paced read and a really great read. I got into the book straight away and I was hooked. It was really well written with great descriptive prose. Lots of twists and turns. I would like to read the earlier books as this is book three but it can be read as a standalone. I liked Ziggy. I thought he was a great character and really pushed the boundaries of being a police officer.

When We Deceive is Catherine Yaffe's 3rd thriller crime novel. It is a Wonderful Well Written Plot and story line that had me engaged from the first pages. Detective Inspecter Andrew 'Ziggy' Thornes and his team have a race on their hands when a body is found in an apartment block. Ziggy hears about the murder and races to the apartment and is devastated to find his sister and best friend Lolly has been murdered.
Due to a conflict-of-interest Ziggy is taken of the case and this shows as his frustration is very palpable and real. Along with Nick, Angela, and Inspector Peter Stiles Ziggy is put on a case to investigate and solve a Money Laundering Case, but Ziggy is determined to find Lolly’s killer at any and all cost. During the day he helps the team unravel the web of money laundering and organised crime and at night Ziggy conducts his own murder investigation as he uncovers a link between both cases. When Ziggy’s son is threatened at school Ziggy then faces a dilemma as he has to decide does he break the sacred oath he has taken as he struggles with whom to trust at work as he unravels the clues to both cases.
Catherine has done an excellent job in allowing the reader to truly grasp Ziggy’s conflict and the plot focuses on murder money laundering and kidnapping. A fast-paced story filled with great suspense and action that adds so much to the story with fantastic characters and a plot that is believable, gripping you with an atmosphere of tension and suspense as you turn each page.
I promise you will not want to put this book down nor will you want to finish it and Catherine Yaffe dropped a massive bombshell at the end which left me wanting to read more straight away. Catherine is a truly exceptional author and I highly recommend when We Deceive and Catherine's other 2 crime thriller novels. I received an advance review copy for free from Catherine Yaffe and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is the third book in an excellent series and DI Andrew (Ziggy) Thornes faces his most gruelling case ever. Set in 2002, pathologist Dr Leila “Lolly” Turner is found murdered in the bath at the apartment of her girlfriend Frankie. Along with Ziggy, DS Nick Wilkinson, DS Sadie Bates and DC Angela Dove form a tight knit team at West Yorkshire Police in Leeds but the DI is under strict instruction from DCS Whitmore to stay away from the case since he is far too close. Instead Sadie is second in command to SIO Whitmore and Ziggy is put onto looking into a money laundering gang with Nick and a detective up from the Met. Of course Ziggy cannot keep away from the case, after all Lolly was his best friend in the world after they grew up in foster care together and he will do anything to get justice for her. However things turn nasty when Ziggy’s son is threatened, along with reporter Chrystal Mack. As Ziggy skirts around the murder investigation, calling in favours and conducting his own inquiries, he stumbles upon some alarming evidence: Lolly had been suspended from her work and there is a connection between her murder and his own case. When a witness goes missing, time is of the essence, even if it means Ziggy risking losing the job he loves.
The reader is treated to a glimpse of the young Ziggy and Lolly with their foster parents and learns how they became such close and loyal friends in this very solid police procedural featuring a team of likeable detectives who all bring different valuable skills to the mix. It has a well told clever plot and an exciting ending to keep the reader engaged throughout whilst, one step ahead of the detectives, we get to hear Lolly’s side of the story at the same time. Left on such an explosive cliff-hanger, I cannot wait to read the next story. Highly recommended. 5*

TRIGGER WARNING: child and domestic abuse, foster care
Detective Ziggy Thornes is devastated by the death of his foster sister Leila. He is forced to stay out of the case due to his personal connection but cannot leave it alone, especially when his own son is threatened...
When We Deceive is the third police procedural to feature Ziggy. I have previously reviewed the second book in the series, The Web They Wove.
Ziggy is determined that nothing will stop him finding the truth about who killed Leila. However, his superior has taken him well away from the case and someone else warns him off by threatening his son. He is torn between his love for his former foster sister, finding justice for her, and his love for his son, wanting to keep him safe.
The second part of the book, about halfway through, shows Leila's unhappy childhood. This is very emotional as it shows her abusive stepdad and her arrival into foster care. We have already seen in the first part about some of the escapades with Ziggy. It then moves to Leila's present day situation wth her girlfriend Frankie and her personal and professional issues which could have led to her death. In the final part of the book, the strands of plot come together.
I flew through this book. Ziggy's character is great so I was eager for him to find the truth. There was a depth of emotion that surprised me as the plot rattled along so quickly. The plot twists kept me guessing and seeing Leila's sad past made me root for Ziggy's success even more.
And the ending...what a cliffhanger!
When We Deceive is an engaging and enjoyable police procedural with a strong emotional thread.

#ad I received a gifted copy of this book and leave this review of my own accord. Many thanks to the author and @zooloosbooktours #partner

This is a gripping crime thriller that takes readers on a rollercoaster ride through the shattered world of Detective Inspector Andrew 'Ziggy' Thornes. Ziggy is deeply affected by the loss of his closest companion and is determined to seek justice at all costs, risking his own well-being in the process.

This novel cleverly intertwines two stories, allowing readers to fully immerse themselves in both worlds that Ziggy exists in. During the day, Ziggy is dedicated to leading his team in the fight against organized crime and money laundering. As he unravels a complicated web of corruption, he also investigates the murder of his friend during his personal mission at night.

The author creates a tense story where the protagonist, Ziggy, faces moral dilemmas as he delves into a dark world. We follow Ziggy on a thrilling adventure filled with secrets, betrayals, and surprising alliances. This detailed story and the writing style transports us into Ziggy's world.

The author's ability to create a palpable sense of suspense and mystery, combined with a protagonist driven to the brink, makes for a compelling narrative that keeps us guessing until the final pages.

This book is a must-read for fans of crime thrillers and complex, morally ambiguous characters. Prepare to be captivated by Ziggy's relentless pursuit of justice, as he teeters on the edge of his own personal and professional collapse.

The third installment of Catherine Yaffe's Tangled Web series is being re-released, and I am pleased to be a part of her re-release team.

When We Deceive is the third installment in the DI Ziggy Thorne series, but it can easily be read as a standalone. The book opens with the death of someone near and dear to Ziggy. Due to a conflict of interest, he is not allowed to work on the case, but that does not stop him from trying to find justice for his friend. The book does shift perspectives at times, so you do get a glimpse into the minds of some of the other characters. I did like how we were given context through the flashback chapters. Those passages enabled readers to have a better understanding of two of the central characters. Though I had my suspicions, the twist was fairly well done, and some may not see it coming. The case is wrapped up rather neatly, and justice is served. There are a few loose ends that I would like to see tied up, but perhaps that is coming in the next installment. I try to keep my reviews spoiler free, so I won't elaborate. The book ends with a bang that will keep most readers invested in finding out what happens next. And you don't have to wait long as the next book in the series is due out in May.

If you like a good police procedural with plenty of action, then definitely give this a try.

This one hits harder emotionally than I expected. Ziggy’s world feels fragile, torn between his duty and his heart. I loved how Yaffe doesn’t shy away from showing grief, guilt, and the messy aftermath of loss.
The links between the organised crime thread and the murder mystery are satisfying. Clues are scattered well, and though I guessed some twists, others totally surprised me. The pacing is strong ‒ not slow, but giving enough space to feel what Ziggy feels. I felt for Lolly, learned about her past, empathised with her struggles. The threats to those he cares for made it more than just a procedural.
Some moments felt a little familiar (cop story + revenge + family threatened) but the author’s voice, the emotions, and the side characters make it stand out. The cliffhanger toward the end left me breathless and wanting more.
If you like crime thrillers where the detective >just> solving a case but also trying to heal, this one is for you.

loved loved LOVED this one. This book continues where we left off from the last book "The Web They Wove". The story is intense right off the bat following detective "Ziggy" who was just told his best friend who is a pathologist was brutally murdered in her home.

Since he is too close with the victim he is not allowed to work her case, but that obviously does not stop him from going rouge and looking to bring justice to his best friend.

We get a big background upbringing to both Ziggy and Lolly (the victim), how they grew up and how that slowly led to Lolly's tragic end.

I loved how this was written, how we get 2 POVs throughout the book and the twists and turns that ultimately led to the murder as well as the justice at the end.

Loved ,loved, Loved it. Another great book from Cat. She's being for me an auto go to author, if she writes it, I'll read it.

The plot is sublime, the short chapters keep your attention, again it's a perfect travel companion book and the characters are fantastic.

I loved that that the important elements of the back story (so hard to write this without spoilers) was in its own part 2 so it was clear and concise.

Full of twists and turns and high levels of suspense you need to read this (and the other Ziggy books. I can't wait to read number 4 and 5 and I'm really hoping there will be a number 6 this winter.

I'd say it's a standalone even though it's part of a series so It's very highly recommended.

“The one case he MUST solve might just be the one that BREAKS him. When murder is this personal, DI Ziggy Thornes is prepared to risk everything to solve it. During the day he’s tracking down money launderers and organised crime gangs. At night he’s conducting his own murder investigation [of his dear friend and colleague]. He is yet to realize how intertwined they are.”

This was a fantastic third book of the Tangled Web crime thriller series, as it closed out the second book and also ended on a cliffhanger…I am hooked!

ARC Review ✨️
☆An unforgettable thriller♡
This series has been completely amazing. Catherine is able to instantly captivate readers with her writing and plots🙌 I loved how the suspense kept growing throughout this book. It was like watching a horror movie and having that nervous feeling when you know something is about to happen. In When We Deceive, Ziggy, our detective, takes on a case that ends up being personal. One aspect I really enjoyed was how POV switched to the victims. We got a background of what led up to the incident, and it really played into the thriller/suspense aspect of the plot. If thrillers are your jam, give this story a chance! It won't let you down🙌🙌

Thank you to the author Catherine Yaffe for the ARC copy of her latest book.

The story begins with a death of someone that Ziggy knows and he grew up with in a foster home. He is not allowed to be the SIO due to his friendship. He is given a Money Laundering Case to solve. Along with Nick, Angela and Inspector Peter Stiles from the MET police to investigate the ring, where students give their bank cards to a member of the gang and they get a cut after a couple of weeks.

I will be recommending this book to my fellow book worms.

When we deceive starts with a startling murder which knocks the main character for six. His best friend is dead and he is prevented from doing his job as detective. Childhood memories are scattered throughout this thriller as Ziggy tries to unravel his friends involvement with serious crime while battling his grief. This book is fast paced with twists and turns that take you through Ziggy's determination to find his friends killer.
