Intermezzo: The Morality Plays Interludes

Rate this book
Everyone has an origin story.

Battle-scarred and dismissive of love and intimacy, Alexa Winston and Mateo Da Rocha aren’t prepared for what they feel when a chance meeting brings them together. They’re as different as they are determined to resist the pull of their passions. Time and wisdom would warn them away from one another, but their soul-deep connection makes denial impossible and their eventual coupling inevitable.

Intermezzo is a collection of short stories that share the origins of Alexa and Mateo’s connection. This prequel is also the “intermission” between Masked Intent: A Modern-Day Morality Play and Intents + Purposes: The Final Act, coming in 2023.

What a deliciously exciting return to the lives of Alexa and Mateo! Reading the prequel made me remember how much I enjoyed their intricate dance toward love in “Masked Intent”.

“Intermezzo” by Kimberly Greer gives the reader a glimpse at how the spark between Alexa and Mateo was ignited. The attraction is instant, and their physical reaction to each other is incredibly strong. Still, they both are grown-up, sensible people. Moreover, they were deeply hurt in their previous relationships. They aren’t going to dive head first into something that promises more hurt and disaster.

I like the way the author made me feel Alexa’s doubts and insecurities. Yes, indeed, getting involved with someone like Mateo – a man with a reputation of a Don Juan – isn’t what a woman in her thirties, with a successful but challenging career, three sons, and a divorce in her portfolio should do without considering the consequences. On the other hand, how will we ever find real love if we never give it a chance?

“Behind the scenes” interactions between Truth and her sisters make me look at the relationship issues from a slightly different angle. Under what influence does people’s perception of what is right or wrong change? Do we accept those changes simply because we don’t notice that they are pushed on us or do we make a conscious decision?

I heartily recommend both “Intermezzo” and “Masked Intent” to lovers of clever and deep reads that offer more than an interesting story. Kimberly Greer's books will make you turn the pages as well as evoke thoughts about things that matter.

Intermezzo: The Morality Plays Interludes by Kimberly Greer is the captivating and intriguing second novel of the series Masked Intent: A Modern-Day Morality Play and follows Alexa and Mateo's adventures. Greer takes readers on a thrilling journey with Alexa and Mateo, two passionate individuals trying to navigate their complicated relationship. The first-person narrative allows readers to intimately experience their internal struggles and secrets, making it impossible not to root for their love to prevail. However, both Alexa and Mateo find themselves facing their past and secrets. Their relationship must face inside and outside menaces, enduring jealousy, and honesty to be together.

The novel is split into interludes, which are bookended by conversations with personified emotions, such as truth, honesty, and accountability. This unique storytelling style adds depth to the novel, making it more than just a simple love story. The attraction between Alex and Matteo is magnetic and easily perceivable from the beginning, where the focus is on his green eyes and her golden ones.

The author's attention to detail and character analysis is impressive, and she does an excellent job of keeping the reader engaged with a good balance of descriptions and conversations. The plot twists kept me on edge. What makes this novel even more intriguing is how Greer weaves in contemporary themes that readers can easily relate to, including mentions of masks and vaccines, which adds a realistic touch to the near-future setting. While the story of Alexa and Mateo continues beyond Intermezzo, the promise of a sequel will leave readers eagerly anticipating what comes next.

I recommend this story to readers looking for a captivating and fast-paced love story with a touch of intrigue. The novel's quick rhythm and good balance between descriptions and conversations will keep the reader entertained, and its plot twists will keep everyone on edge. Intermezzo: The Morality Plays Interludes is an excellent read for those who enjoy magnetic characters and an engaging plot.

“I feel hunted and cornered, held captive by his will as he excavates my mind. I don’t resist because I don’t want to. I want him seeing every part of me, and I want inside of him.” – p. 23

Mateo Da Rocha is a psychology professor at American University, he’s a campus favorite and easy on the eyes. He decides to attend a conference session on “The Death of Journalism and the Rise of Information Domination” which just happens to feature Alexa Winston. It is during this speech that Mateo and Alexa first spark, from there the sexual tension only continues to bubble across the pages.

“Intermezzo” is broken into several interludes; each perfectly corresponds with the crucial plot turns of every romantic love story. From the initial attraction and meeting, to the dating and convincing of oneself this person is worth it, to the input from friends and confidants, Alexa and Mateo’s story unravels beautifully across the pages, through all the interludes. Every important romantic plot point is hit before the next interlude continues to carry the story onward and it is so brilliantly done. The scenery and dialog only further aid in adding to the tension built into this contemporary romance as readers alternate between Alexa and Mateo’s points of view, as they writhe in sexual tension.

Author Kimberly Greer has an exquisite way with words. She builds a tension so palpable and fun, with her plays on words and rotating points of views I was hooked from the first handful of pages. As a romance lover who craves diversity of character and wit, this read was everything, from the dialog to the supporting cast of characters I knew early on this book was going to be a great one!

This is the prequel to Masked Intent which I had the honor of reading and reviewing. I adore the fact that the author has chosen to give us the back story and origins of her series.

The two main characters Alexa and Mateo have an unsuspected meeting that neither were expecting. Both having intimacy issues from the past they weren't looking for romance. Each character does there best to not fall victim to the intense passion they feel for each other. However, the heart does want what the heart wants!!!

I love that the reader gets a background on both of the main characters and what they have been through to get them where they are at now, together.
It's really neat that this is done through short stories breaking down each of their backstories.

The author gives the reader excellent character building in this prequel. The imagery and descriptive writing is great as well. If you have read Masked Intent this is a must read. If you haven't then both should be on your reading list. All fans of a good love story, this is a series you do not want to miss!!!!

This is such a unique read. I absolutely loved the writing style and everything about it.
When Mateo first met Alexa, he fell in love with her mind.  Alexa, a single mom of three, has her hands full already and doesn’t want to add a new relationship into the mix. Mateo’s insistence leads to weekly lunches and then to a whole lot more.  They both have a strong friend group which provides the support they both need as they try to decide if fear or love will prevail. You'll have to grab a copy and read this exciting original story to discover what happens between Mateo and Alexa. An excellent story indeed!!

Kimberly Greer’s got such a gift for writing; her style is unique to herself and is even more exceptionally unique to the writing world.  This is an enthralling story with a lot of depth to it.  Reading this book with its short style makes it a fast read, and yet, her writing style is so good that she makes readers feel at home almost immediately.  As a reader, I really liked the play style of this text; I haven’t read anything like this at all.  The play style also offered an interesting variety to the overall story.

I had the pleasure of being a beta reader and enjoyed this story very much. It was amazing! The sexual tension and chemistry between Alexa and Mateo, our romantic leads, was sizzling hot! I could also feel their yearning and fear of letting down their walls. This story was very well written and the author paints a vivid, beautiful portrait with her words. I look forward to reading book 3. I highly recommend this book.
