One Bad Knight

I'm not the hero.

I'm the bad son they send to do the dirty work when the demons come out.

My brothers save lives, but I ruin them.

I ruined hers, years ago.

I should stay away from her.

But something might be coming for the girl I left in pieces all those years ago, and I might not be able to stay away.

The question is what's more dangerous than me?
And can I for once, not ruin someone?

Omg this book gives you EVERYTHING! This is is the first book I have read of Holly Roberds, but let me tell you, it will not be the last! This book had all the swoon moments and made me so happy, sad, and all the smutty yumminess!

Gatsby is my new favorite book boyfriend. His story is heartbreaking and how he thinks of himself made me bawl like a big baby. Gatsby deserves all the love and this man knows how to dirty talk like no business!

Kat is fantastic and I loved watching her develop and change as a character. Family for her was everything and was willing to give up her life and passion for her family and their career goals for her. I loved reading the inner struggles and how she changed overtime in the book.

All in all, this book was fantastic and highly recommend everyone to read it, you WILL NOT REGRET IT!😍❤️

I received an ARC of this book at no cost from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This was a fun read, I enjoyed it most of the time as the story gets unfold. As i was lucky to have an ARC here are my thoughts:
What I liked about the book:
- Both of the main characters were likeable
- I like the way Holly addresses the issues they each had
- Please tell me that I'm not reading into things and there's a Vietnamese character in there????
Cause that made the Vietnamese little girl in me jumping up and down
- They both went through an insane amount of trauma, I'm surprised they could stay sane after all of that
- I like they way the set up of how they meet, reminds me of Peter Pan
- I also like there are previous characters that got to show up
- The spice was intense
- The reveal was nicely came in circles answering questions that were set up the story

What I was a bit hesitant about:
- The ending was a bit rushed, I'd like to see more Gatsby's interaction with his other brothers as well as his point of view when he told them his side of the story and how they react to it
- I also wanted to see more of the two main character's interaction outside of the sex scene, I need more sweet moment between them, like, how does he treat her outside the bedroom and I desperately want to see how hung over the moon he is with her on day to day activity.
- The way Gatsby started to open himself is really nice but I also want to see a slower process as he came to terms with things

All in all this is a entertaining book and I'd recommend this to others once it released.

I really enjoyed this book. Gatsby is a grade A villain who will literally burn down the world for you.

I will say that this book had my brain working most, if not all throughout the story with all the moving parts. But Gatsby? Nah, he turned my brain to mush.

This is the perfect amount of grumpy/sunshine, and Kat and Gatsby just made the perfect dynamic, the peanut butter to his jelly.

I thoroughly enjoyed all the action that went on. I really felt like we were Sam and Dean-ing our way through the demon slaying all the way down to the black eyes, and I just really enjoyed that.

Things that I felt could have been improved on, was the dirty talk in the beginning. It did get better the further into the book, but a lot of the terms other than what they actually are, are off putting to me.

And the ending I felt was rushed. Gatsby found the light and wham, bam, thank you ma'am was immediately a better person (not that I thought he was ever a bad one, does that make me a bad person 🤔)

And then a slip up in the end with what happened to the uncle.

If you need a quick, dirty read, OBK needs to be your next book.

Gatsby and Kat are adorable together. You find yourself rooting for them from the beginning. Kat will frustrate you at times. But she comes around and you’ll find yourself forgiving her.

There’s a plot twist you don’t see coming. That one threw me off.

Oh and a little Easter egg? Look at the first word of chapters 1-5. You’re welcome.

If you like your FMC naive and resembling a doormat, and if you like your MMC feeling sorry for himself the entire damn book....

Also WTF is this:

"I went about cleaning [her wound on her bare thigh] with as much clinical precision as I could. The effort it took not to do anything else, while the girl from my dreams lay before me in only a pair of pink panties with a bow at the top."

Excuse me, the effort to not do what now??? While she's passed out??! 😬😬😬

ARC review. Spoilers...

Such a good book!! I love how she wrote Gatsby with how insecure he is and the way he views himself as the bad guy that just kills people but can't save them. I loved seeing how he grew and finally realized he was looking at his power in the wrong way and that was causing his issues with his power not working. Also how the whole time Kat never gives up on him and forgives him. I never trusted the uncle and had a feeling he was involved somehow but I never guessed what his involvement was. I could tell there was something fishy about him but I did not see the twist coming at the end. I hate a book where you can guess the twist before it happens. I feel this book was even better than the first and I am so excited for the coming book(s) in the series!! Definitely worth picking up and a well-worth ride throughout the story.

WOWZER! That was a story of epic proportions!!

Hmmm how do I start off this review without spoilers as I basically just want to word-vomit all of my feelings about this book? (Obviously there will be no spoilers… but still!)

First off let me just say that this book has everything you could possibly want in it all rolled up into one! Romance, mystery, family secrets, past traumas, demons, touch her and die vibes, and a strong, possessive alphahole MMC, a family oriented, bit submissive but strong when it counts MFC, and a whole host of side characters including a smart talking parrot and an adorable dog, and enough spice to make you need a shower!! And if none of those descriptors immediately make you want to buy this book… we’ll then obviously I’ve done something wrong 😂

If for some reason the description of this book hasn’t been enough to immediately convince you to read this book, then let me just give you a little bit more of a run down… spoiler free obviously!! In this book we finally get the elusive Gatsby’s tale. We’ve met Gatsby previously in some of Holly’s other books but he’s been a show up when we need him character and disappear before we’re allowed anywhere near him. That all changes in One Bad Knight though, here we get to learn about not only his past with the Luxis, but also his past with our free spirited, art loving, family driven Kat. Now I’ll admit when I first started reading about Gatsby I was on the fence, he seemed a bit egotistical without anything to balance him out from previous run-ins with him from other books, but man once you get his full story you won’t be able to help yourself from falling head over heels for this bad boy with an angels heart!! Let’s not leave out Kat, though as she was quite a strong presence from the get go!! I loved her free spirit and her willingness to be kind to everyone around her even though who may not have deserved it!! And while she had a few cave to the pressures put on her moments she had so many moments where she stood up for herself and the things and people she believed in!! Overall though, while I loved these two characters individually, I absolutely adored them together!! Their romance was off the charts, and who they were to each other and for each other was simply amazing! This whole book and story was a top tier read and would implore all fantasy romance readers to throw this one on their TBR!!

HAPPY READING!!! 📖

Chapter 3: My massive chocolate brown Newfoundland...
Chapter 7: The black and white dog caught up with me and escorted me to Kat’s bed.
Is the dog brown or black and white? (either is possible for that breed)
****
Chapter 8: My eyes opened at dawn’s first light. (Takes shower and reflects on the previous day’s events)
A few pages later: I slept in too late to greet my uncle and cousins at the breakfast table...
Did she get up, shower and then go back to bed?
****
Gatsby has apparently appeared in earlier books which I haven’t read (yet) Kat first encounters him sitting in the tree outside her bedroom window. It’s the night before her 11th birthday and she’s too excited to sleep. She eventually lures him inside and introduces him to various activities that make her happy. Gatsby is actually there to kill her father so he won't sacrifice her aunt to a demon to guarantee him an election win. (If Kat’s 11 years old why doesn’t she know this aunt? An adult Kat claims she didn’t know her father had a sister)

Gatsby reappears ten years later. Kat is now living in the same house with her uncle and two cousins. The uncle is involved in politics and she is used as an attractive prop in social situations. He wants her to attend Harvard but she’d rather pursue her love of painting. Gatsby encourages her to seek out what she really wants although she claims submitting to her family’s demands is what she ultimately desires.

Kat eventually discovers Gatsby’s past and why he feels he is a failure as a knight. She believes in him despite his doubts. They become lovers although he intends to disappear once he feels she is safe. Circumstances keep forcing them together and Gatsby eventually discovers his genuine strength.

One of my favorite things about this book was how it was set up from the beginning - the look into our main characters lives as children and how their backgrounds shaped them as they got older was a unique approach and it drew me in right away. In general, I enjoyed the plot of the book where we can clearly tell that something is wrong, especially with the characters around our female main character, but we're not sure exactly what or how we're going to find out the truth. I liked the world the author has created too, with paranormal elements that have merged into basically the current world we live in.

Characters were one of my favorite parts of the story - both of the main characters are strong and likeable, while still flawed and obviously defensive. I liked the conflict that Kat was facing between her passion and her familial obligations because it felt realistic, and showed Kat's naivete as well. Gatsby is a possessive, growly, burly book boyfriend that is also dealing with his own conflict about what he's been taught versus what he feels. I liked them together a lot - lots of tension and the spicy scenes are certainly spicy (and unique - it's good to have some variety now and again!)

The struggle I had with this book was the pacing - the first half (or even 2/3?) was really relationship development, and then all of a sudden, new characters and secrets and conflicts and history are all revealed and rushed through to an ending and a resolution. I wish it had all been fleshed out a bit more or integrated more into the first bit of the story.

It's not a secret, Holly Roberds is my favorite author. This book, the second in the Demon Knights series, just proves my case on how awesome she is. This book is for those who love paranormal romances and don't mind spice. If that is not you, you won't like this one.
Gatsby is the bad knight. He was selected as a child and groomed in order to serve the Luxis. His problems was he didn't have the skills the other knights had and the man chosen for his mentor was abusive. So Gatsby grew up thinking he was worthless and no one could love him.
Enter Kat. She grew up being taught that family is everything and she should do all she could for those she loved. Raised by her uncle, she was supposed to be a good girl and help him get reelected. It wasn't until Gatsby reentered her life that she started to see how manipulative her uncle was.
Opinion
This book had me screaming at the pages (phone.) The ups and downs of the way each character was treated made me want to punch someone in the throat. This book brought out all the feels and then some. If you want a book to bring out all the empathy in you, this book is it. Be warned, it is part of a series and you may want to read the first book before reading this one. But don't worry, that book is just as good as this one.
Many thanks to Holly Roberds for providing me with an ARC of this book.

After her mother's death Kat lived with her father. A busy man he was up for re-election and she saw little of him. But her 11th birthday was soon and they would spend the whole day together. Looking out her bedroom window she saw a boy in her tree. They develop a secret friendship but all goes wrong on the eve of her 11th birthday when the boy kills her father. 12 years later, the boy from her youth is back in the area. Gatsby was a Knight of the Light fighting demons, but he no longer felt he earned that title as there was a darkness in him. He knows from the past that Kat is in danger and he has returned to protect her. She is still living in her family home with her uncle and two cousins. As the story slowly unfolds it becomes clear that Kat is as risk and Gatsby is there to keep her safe. But will he succeed? Will she trust him after what he did in the past? This is a well written, detailed story. With many twists and turns, danger and adventure. For me there was a few nail-biting scenes too and I couldn't put the book down. There is chemistry between Kat and Gatsby which was hot! I really enjoyed reading this book and look forward to the next one in the series.

One Bad Knight is the second book in the Demon Knights series, and is another thoroughly enjoyable read.

Katherine (Kat) and Gatsby met 7 days before her 11th birthday. Gatsby would appear each night in the tree outside her bedroom. Over the course of the week they become friends.

The night before her birthday she finds Gatsby standing next to her fathers body, and covered in her fathers blood. I won’t give away what else happens, as you find out more/why later, but after this Gatsby disappears.

12 years later, Gatsby is back and he is no longer the little boy she once new. He is now a man and the only one who can protect Kat from the danger she finds herself in.

I thought I loved Leonidas after reading One Savage Knight, but he has easily been replaced by Gatsby.

The only thing I didn’t like was that some parts if the books felt rushed, as though there should have been more, but there wasn’t, but it didn’t really detract from the story itself.

I received an ARC copy from the author.

Wow!

Holly never seems to miss with these!

*I received an ARC and am giving this review on my own volition *

One Bad Knight is the second in the Demon Knights Duology. Demon Knights duology is a spin off of the Five Orders series Holly has previously written. One Bad Knight focuses on Gatsby, a former Knight of the Light of the order of Luxis. Gatsby believes himself to be broken, his light magic doesn’t manifest the way his “brothers” magic does, it’s not even reliable. He also believes he’s broken internally due to the intense and horrific treatment and abuse he went through under the Order. On one mission, when he’s 11 he gets distracted by a sweet 10 year old Kat who spots him hanging in the tree outside her room. Lonely and starved for attention and friendship, Kat immediately takes a liking to Gatsby. She shows him not everything has to be cold and dark, sharp and unforgiving, and most importantly she shows him that not everything has to be used for something. Sometimes things are just there to love and be loved.

But on her 11th birthday, Kat finds Gatsby over her father’s lifeless body and her entire world changed instantly. 12 years later, a few weeks before her 23rd birthday, Kat senses Gatsby again. Convinced she’s gone crazy, she tries to ignore him, but finds it futile. The only question is has Gatsby come to save her or finish what he started?

I absolutely loved this book. I like that Holly gives us enough detail from the Five orders that even people who haven’t read that series can still understand these books. I like that Holly doesn’t shy away from who Gatsby is at any point. He’s “broken”, he doesn’t understand or believe in love, he believes he is the same as the demons and evil spilling from the Hellmouth. A man like that wouldn’t be soft and kind, he wouldn’t romance a woman, especially when he barely understands “civilian” customs and speech. The Villains are never immediately obvious, if you’re not looking hard enough and I like that. I enjoy being shocked when someone turns out to be bad or when the situation isn’t what you’ve been led to believe. Holly does a great job of integrating the spicy chapters and scenes in a way that flows and doesn’t seem like an “oh carp they need a sex scene here”. I absolutely have to go back and read the Five Orders now!

I received an advanced review copy of "One Bad Knight" by Holly Roberds to give my honest and unbiased opinion. The storyline was amazingly well-written and captivating. The characters and their interactions were relatable and likeable. The world of the Knights was intense and at moments sad and lonely.
From the opening chapter your attention was captured and held prisoner. One moment you were an eleven year old girl awaiting her twelfth birthday and the next you were a "cursed" knight fighting a woman possessed by a demon. Kat and Gatsby's story was beautifully written and had you rooting for a happily ever after.
The book was highly immersive with moments of laughter and tears thrown in for fun. The ending was perfect and appreciated. I highly recommend this series to paranormal fans of headstrong heroines and guilt-ridden tortured sexy alphas. I cannot wait for the next installment. Loved it😍

Oh wow! Holly Roberds has done it again! This second book in the series is totally brilliant. It can be read as a standalone book though I would recommend at least reading the first book. I wouldn’t say you need to read the five orders books to be able to enjoy this book. Some of these characters get mentioned but aren’t a big part of the book. Anyway back to this very impressive book. God I totally loved it. I have read every book by this amazing author so I might be called biased but I don’t care. The story in this book is so good and keeps you on your toes right to the very end. Gatsby is one very naughty man and I’m seriously jealous of Kat! How can I be jealous of a fictional book character I hear you ask? Well read the book and let me know if you agree with me. Chapter 10 is where the fun begins! If you don’t like your books super naughty then you have been warned.
Can’t wait to read the next book by Holly.

"But that's exactly how I knew that I was the villain. I didn't want to save the world. I wanted to burn it at her feet, so she would know the desire she ignited in me."

The strange boy who hung out in her tree as kids returns 12 years later acting as her bodyguard, protecting her from demons. Once a knight of light trained to kill; Gatsby is a swoon worthy, morally grey character who would burn the world down for Kat if needed. He believes he is unworthy of love and that love is just a form of manipulation and that he is there to do a job and protect her from a darkness that is coming but unexpected feelings arise. However, he has one huge secret he's kept from her that could change it all, what will she do when she finds out?!

I LOVED this book & devoured it in under 24hours. I highly recommend reading if you like paranormal, secrets/betrayal, touch her and die vibes with spice!

This book was so spicy and the unexpected twists were truly mind blowing!

Kat makes friend with a boy that has been seen outside her window in the tree. After hanging out with him for awhile, Kat’s father was attacked and killed on her eleventh birthday and nobody believed her that it was a demon was there.

Fast forward to her approaching twenty third birthday and she still doesn’t want to celebrate it. All she wants to do is to become an artist that her uncle respects and not the lawyer he wants her to become. After a night out at the bar, Kat is attacked by a She demon. Gatsby is there and fights off the demon and saves Kat from the poison coursing through her. She then realizes that he is the boy from her childhood. Gatsby is not the hero in this story but he feels like he needs to protect Kat at all costs.

If you love:
-Dark Romance
-Magic
-Morally Gray men
-demons
-spice
You will love this amazing book!

yes girl!!!!!

absolutely LOVED this book. Holly definitely has a way to capture and suck you into their world. Gatsby and Kat… Lordy what a push and pull!! I had one too many internal yelling matches at them while they sorted through their inner turmoils. I’m not going to get into plot details and spoil anything but it’s definitely a book that was hard to put down! I love meeting all these characters in their own elements I was a huge fan of Leonidas in One Savage Knight and now I’m def also team Gatsby!!!! I can’t wait to read more of their stories…. Holly, girl you sure have a gift, thank you for putting pen to paper so to speak…. Truly talented and definitely don’t forget your level of spice.. fantastic read!!

The second book in the Demon Knights Series -
I was lucky enough to be offered an ARC of this book.

Knight of the Light of the order of Luxis manifests light, only Gatsby's light doesn't occur like his brothers. The only clear reason this is happening is that he's broken from the abuse he dealt with. When he's a child, he meets Kat - who shows him the good in the world. Then things change when Kat finds Gatsby over her father's cold dead body.

Their friendship broke my heart. The way Gatsby thinks he's a demon and not good like his brothers, it's so sad. He doesn't see the good in himself, yet it's there in everything that he does. Kat and Gatsby are 4th of July fireworks together.

Run to grab this book. Don't forget the first book too!! You'll love it.

I was really excited to read One Bad Knight given how much I loved One Savage Knight, but unfortunately it felt like something was missing in this one. I was intrigued for first part of the book, but started to get frustrated with Kat and her rose coloured glasses. Her interactions with her uncle and cousins also felt awkward and somewhat unrealistic given that she’s lived half her life with them. Gatsby’s about-turns from a badass survivor to his ‘poor me’ attitude also grated and the mushy, flowery dialogue in the last few chapters felt sappy and out of character. So, all in all, not a really satisfying read for me given the expectations I had. It’s not bad, it’s just not great either.

greatest author improvement I’ve seen!

Honestly, I liked the theory of the first book but HATED the storytelling. However, this book is an absolutely DRASTIC upgrade - as in it seems like it’s a different author. I devoured it in a day, and loved a lot of the scenes (naughty and not). I always like to play idea of the book and the topic from the very beginning, however, I did not like the writing style, and how it skipped over so many important part of it could have been more monumental to the story. However, with this book, it feels like the author actually took the time with descriptions with the way the character spelled with a little bit of logic, just with the overall bringing the reader into the moment.

I’m so sad that this didn’t work for me because I was really looking forward to reading it after reading One Savage Knight and reading the little sneak peak. I can’t really put my finger on what it was that was missing for me, but for starters I really had a hard time connecting with Kat, I didn’t enjoy and scene with her uncles and cousins I didn’t get why she was letting her uncle dictate her life and maybe that’s revealed or resolved later but I dnfed this so I guess I’ll never know, and by 40% I just didn’t care about her and Gatsby anymore. The spice also wasn’t working for me? Like the first time they’re intimate it just didn’t seem fun to me and very aggressive and by the time they actually fuck I basically skimmed it bc at that point I had checked out.

Outstanding!

Hold on to your seats with this one! This is Kat and Gatsby’s story and what a story it is! These two meet for the first time when Kat is eleven. On the eve of her twelfth birthday her father is killed and Gatsby is there to save her. At least that’s what she thought. She never saw him again until it’s almost her twenty third birthday. The year before a hell mouth opened by the mountains in Colorado and released all kinds of demonic and evil creatures. Kat doesn’t know it but there is a demon coming for her and Gatsby is trying to protect her. Both of these two must learn to co-exist or it may just be to late for both of them and the rest of the world. Fantastic Book!

ARC Copy for honest response so here I go. I was not for sure what to expect. I have read the others but, while good, I just never really connected with them. BUT THANK GOODNESS I DIDN’T LET THAT STOP ME. One Bad Knight pulled me in from the get go. I was totally invested in the characters from page 1. You will hear from characters from the other books and get an update on them too. Gatsby has all the inner angst you would expect from a character with that name. As a boy he makes you wanna wrap him up and love on him. As a man, he makes you wanna unwrap and do everything but cuddle (well cuddles can come after)

It seems as if one of the Knights was turned into an assassin as a child and has since struck out on his own. But his target has an 11 yr old daughter who sees and befriends him, which makes him want to protect her. This, he does over the years, until he realizes the danger she really is in. As a man, he has to balance his job with his need to protect her. But that is going to require him to dig down to find something he thought he lost long ago. A really good story of the girl who grew up to help her family in their political aspirations, and the man determined to save her soul.

Ooooh, I had been waiting for Gatsby story! Finding out more about the bad boy that just doesn’t fit in with the others was quite satisfying. It made me smile to see Krysten, Travis and their Whack-A-Ghoul Business reappear. Kat posed an interesting challenge. There was so much family history with so many details that just didn’t make sense until the end. I really enjoyed watching the healing relationship that Kat and Gatsby finally achieved together. The playful banter and dialogue between Kat and Gatsby as well as so many of the other familiar characters was truly entertaining.

If you like dark bad boys, with broody personalities this book if for you. There is lots of spice, and bad boy persona in this book.

I enjoyed reading this story. The plot of this story was super original and I enjoyed it very much. The characters are super lovable and relatable. The spicy scenes are just as god as any other that Holly has written. The only thing I didn't like about this book was how much death/ violent death there was in it. I am not opposed to death, but there was just to much death in this book for me.

Great story that I couldn't put down. Great engaging character development, great storyline that intrigue me to the end. This story is about Gatsby and Kat. Loved how it starts with them meeting when they were young when Kat finds a boy on a tree limb near her balcony to when she finds the boy over her father's dead body. The flashbacks in this story give us depth and insight into the characters. There's angst, drama, romance and action in this story along with family connections and unique pets. Loved her "Vegas Immortal" series and this is another series I'm loving. I received a copy, and I am volunteering to read and review.
