Anna Elliott is an author of historical fiction and fantasy. She enjoys stories about strong women, and loves exploring the multitude of ways women can find their unique strengths. She was delighted to lend a hand with the Sherlock & Lucy series, and thrilled to continue a new spin-off series featuring Becky and Flynn. Fiction can teach us many things, and what better fiction for this purpose than a tale of Sherlock Holmes and his compatriots? He is logical and dispassionate, and he always finds a solution to the stickiest of problems.

Circa 1900, England is embroiled in the Boer War and not all Brits are in favor of the monetary outlay the government is making to fund the conflict. Parliamentary elections are right around the corner. These facts - war, money, and politics - seem to haunt the world scene in history and continue today.

If you are an avid reader of the Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James series as I am, you will recall from the previous novel, GALAHAD'S CASTLE, former Pinkerton Agent, Violet Leverton is attempting to recover millions of dollars in stolen U. S. Treasury bearer bonds. That action continues here.

How do war in South Africa, stolen bearer bonds, and an election in Britain add up to anything? Sherlock Holmes and company will unravel the mystery, and Holmes will arrive at the perfect solution to the ultimate handling of the criminals to the satisfaction of two governments while keeping the citizens of both unaware. There is no doubt that politics and diplomacy go hand in hand with corruption ostensibly for the greater good.

Once again, the team of Elliott and Veley have combined history and crime to present a Holmesian tale worthy of the canon. I always appreciate the Historical Notes that follow at the end of the book and recommend reading them to put the account in true historical context.

The Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James series can be enjoyed by all ages. (I was probably eight when I started reading the classic tales of the great detective.) Reading the entire series from the beginning allows for passage of time and development of the Holmes legend beyond Dr. Watson and the Baker Street Irregulars. I can think of nothing better on a cold winter's night than curling up with Sherlock and Lucy in an exciting adventure.

First, a warning: you'll want to read 'Galahad's Castle' first, as this one is a direct follow-up of that story and, although maybe not necessary, you will certainly enjoy it more if you do so.

That said... wow! what a great, great story! Fuelled by close-calls, political intrigue and danger everywhere, our heroes are each following their own leads in the different aspects of the mystery that is present here.

I adore Becky and Flynn's part in this story, they are such wonderful characters and they are always a joy to read :)

And I like Violet a lot, she's such a stubborn, impulsive woman and yet you can help but understand why, sometimes, she acts as rashly as she does. I really, really like her ♥

And having the Loch Ness monster involved is kind of the cherry on top *laughs*

Another fantastic read in this series, I wholeheartedly recommended it. Oh, and please, read the Historical Notes, they are fantastic!

1900 Continuing on from Galahad's Castle, an explosion underground has cut off the water supply in Whitehall resulting in three deaths. As Beau Preston, a Pinkerton agent, and Violet Leverton, are still chasing the theft of bearer bonds which are in the possession of Blinder and Urquhart, where will they go now. Is there a connection between the events. Holmes and the others must decide and follow their leads.
An entertaining historical mystery with its cast of likeable characters. Another good addition to this well-written and enjoyable series.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is a continuation of a great series about Sherlock Holmes and his daughter Lucy. FRom London to the Scottish Highlands they search for the person behind some London bombings and the murder of several people. I think I've read all or almost of this series and this is the best yet. The books are hard to put down and when reading I often wonder how they'll get out of dangerous situations. I did receive an advance copy for free to review, however, I would buy it even if I wasn't an advance reader.

I was thankful to read an Advance Review Copy of this latest in the Sherlock and Lucy series that began with The Last Moriarty. I have thoroughly enjoyed every one of the stories I have read in the series, and this was no exception. It was gripping from beginning to end. It will likely come as no surprise (so I don't consider this a spoiler) that it shares the same basic idea as the "canonical" story The Hound of the Baskervilles–namely a criminal taking advantage of a local legend to spread fear while covering up a crime. One warning. If you are not the kind of person to enjoy one close shave and deadly peril after another, this book would not be for you. Otherwise, I highly recommend it, especially to Holmes afficianados. Note that this carries on with an ongoing plot that began in Galahad's Castle, but it is not necessary to have read it first. On the one hand, enough details are given to understand what is going on in this book, while on the other hand the statements about the ongoing case do not really count as spoilers for the overall progression of that book.

Fans of this series will definitely want to pick this one up, especially if they have read the previous book, as this is part 2 of a two-part story. It is fast-paced, with new perils for our (extended family of) heroes and heroines, and much interesting character development. A bonus is that much of it takes place in the Inverness of 1900, nicely evoked.

This is definitely a series that should be read by every Sherlockian in its entirety and in order; readers who have made it this far need not (and doubtless will not) hesitate to acquire this excellent continuation.

The Sherlock “team” continues an adventure begin in Galahad’s Castle, moving on to Loch Ness. As always Lucy Becky and Flynn find ways to get in and out of fixes joined this time by Violet. What is endangering the empire and what can they all do to save it. The characters are those we are by now familiar with as from all the previous stories, the action is fast paced and we are drawn quickly. This whole series has been good and is easy to recommend. I received an advanced review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I was offered a review copy for an honest review. This is the first novel that I have read by Charles Veley but will not be the last. The story grips you from the very beginning and it is hard to put down. The author has a great understanding of Sherlock and his methods of deduction. Extremely well written and very engrossing. Great use of the politics of the time but does not have it overtake the story and characters. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a great mystery and is a fan of Sherlock Holmes.

This was loaded with surprises, some pleasant and others not so pleasant. Holmes was like an action hero in some parts, and I found thrilling and exciting. I didn't expect a subtle romance to grow as the progressed, and I enjoyed that element. I like how the author gives you some bread crumbs and then drops the whole enchilada on you!!! Intriguing, suspenseful, and totally unpredictable, just as I like it to be. It kept me turning pages and guessing to the end.

I have not read the previous books in this series, but I was so impressed with this one that I plan on reading all of them. I really like the storyline and the back stories. I like the characters. I like it that the characters take care of each other, go looking for each other when they’re missing and even willing to follow them to death’s door to help save them. Very exciting!!

Comes now the 32nd book in Anna Elliot’s and Charles Velsey’s Sherlock and Lucy series—and there are 3 Becky/Flynn novels in a series set after this one but with Uncle Sherlock a continued presence.

The series has returned to full length novels over the last two or three after an extended run of roughly 20 novellas/short stories that, cleverly arrayed in story arcs like a television series, pose and resolve capers.

As a 272 page novel, we can experience the full force of Holmes and Daughter, Ltd—Holmes and Watson; Lucy, husband Jack and his colleagues from the Yard; ex-Pinkerton Violet Leverton and her rival/nemesis/admirer Preston; Jack’s little sister Becky and Flynn, the leader of the Baker Street Irregulars; and even Mycroft Holmes—are brought to bear on a conspiracy to wreak havoc in London that could sway the 1900 parliamentary election and impact the Boer War.

The many threads point to Scotland and Loch Ness where rumors of a creature impact the mystery even as our heroes give no truck to the myth even as that story serves as cover for the villains.

With this particular set of corrupt traitors dispatched, book 33 is sure to set in motion another caper that will test the ever expanding enterprise as Becky and Flynn grow into full partnership and, perhaps, Violet and Preston make possible American adventures.

Another great adventure for Sherlock, Watson, Lucy, James, Becky, Flynt. Violet and Preston from America join the team to discover the evil plot to skew an English election and poison many via the London water system. The team travels to Scotland in pursuit of the criminals only to discover the Loch Ness Monster is involved with the evil plot. Great characters and great imagination in developing the twist and turns of the story. Based on some historical facts enlivened with a fertile imagination. Highly recommended for all who enjoy the adventures of Sherlock and Watson.

Sherlock Holmes and Family

The finale to this season's read on the mystery of the stolen bonds.
Holmes and family converge to prevent a brewing catastrophe.
The story is a little more centered around two characters, Preston and Violet, but all our favorite people are involved. Got some fun action out of this one!
Charles Veley's writing is fast and smart as he takes us a little beyond London to conclude the case.

I didn't want to put this down. The latest in a number of Sherlock Holmes stories by these authors. If you have never read any of these, there are a number of characters not created by Arthur Conan Doyle, such as Sherlock's daughter Lucy, her husband Jack, Jack's sister Becky, and Baker street irregular Flynn. If you like mystery adventure stories, you'll like this.

A satisfactory ending

As with all Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James mysteries, this one is an exciting race to find out if the rumors about poisoning London’s water system are true. The reality is much worse as this team rushes to prevent catastrophic death and devastation. And the ending? I didn't see that coming, and it was satisfying elegant.

Another great addition to the Lucy James series.

However -- I can't give it 5 stars. There were too many narratives and characters that were being showcased to bring me to "love it." Lucy James was not a key character at all -- more like an add-on at the last minute.
The numerous characters and their "insights" were a bi difficult to follow and keep straight. It would have been better to have 1-2 key narratives to smooth things out.

Yet, with all that being said -- I still enjoy this series and look forward to more stories.
