Most of the film makers featured in this book are inarguable (Griffith, Godard, Wilder) and it is great to then have a short list of those directors must see films. But some of the more recent directors listed are a little more questionable. "Blade Runner" and "Alien" are classics, but I have problems with Ridley Scott making the top fifty when there is no place for Buster Keaton. "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" is great fun and "Ed Wood" is one of the great films about film making but there is no place for Ozo, Lubitsch or Cassavetes?
One of the great things about a book like this with lists is arguing with it and picking it apart.
And there is fun trivia throughout. Such as the time John Ford tweeked John Wayne by listing the military rank of players in the cast of "In Harm's Way" so that the Duke's lack of a service record would stand out. Or the obituary headline for Billy Wilder in La Monde, "Billy Wilder Dead: Nobody's Perfect".
Fun book, worth having in a film lover's library.
