Every Day is a Fresh Beginning: Meaningful Poems for Life is a stunning collection of poetry chosen by Aoibhín Garrihy to uplift and inspire, delight and comfort. These powerful verses will guide you through the stresses of modern life, touching on themes such as friendship, love, home, parenting, and grief.
With lines of classic and contemporary wisdom taken from a wide range of poets including Emily Bronte, W. B. Yeats, Seamus Heaney, Anne Casey and Jan Brierton, this anthology will bring joy to every reader.
Some lovely poems, some not so much. A couple of things spoiled my enjoyment of this:
Aiobhìn wrote a little paragraph before each poem stating why she chose it and what it means for her. I eventually stopped reading those as a lot of them initially mentioned covid lockdown. I work in a hospital and so worked through all that, and I can't really relate when people talk about the lockdowns as I just continued to go to work as normal.
The second reason is more on the publisher. Aiobhìn is Irish, and some of the poems are from Irish poets, yet American English was everywhere. I find that to be so irritating 😒
I thoroughly enjoyed Every Day is a Fresh Beginning: Meaningful Poems for Life by Aoibhín Garrihy. There were many uplifting and inspiring poems in this book from well known writers to new poets on the scene. A number of poems I knew from studying them at school, such as ‘The Road Not Taken’ by Robert Frost. However in reading this collection I did discover some poets unknown to me and enjoyed their work, for example ‘To A Child’ by Christopher Morley. I took away 0.5 of a star simply because a number of poems in this book just didn’t resonate with me but I do still respect the thought and creativity put into said poems. Overall, this book is a pleasure to read and I would highly recommend it !
I got this for Christmas and honestly thought it was just going to be cringy but it was everything but. I loved the themes and broad collection of poetry, it really made me think about my life and values
3.5 🌟 this is the first poetry collection I have picked up in so long and I enjoyed it. A range of poems from a range of times but they still feel as relevant today as when some of them were written. These poems provide comfort, reflection, strength and support and I found a few poems I will know I will keep with me. The themes throughout flow nicely and you feel as though you have been taken on a journey and learnt important life lessons along the way.
"It's nice to be important but it's far more important to be nice."
I got the audio version initially and was then gifted the book. Unfortunately, the audiobook turned me off. Aoibhin's voice grated on me, perhaps different readers would have been better. I have so many poetry books like this but the best (layout and cover design is very very similiar to this) is still "A Poem For Every Day Of The Year" edited by Allie Esiri.
Beautiful poetry book that I've really enjoyed. I listened to this version on audio-book and listened to it at night or while I was doing my daily chores. Some of the poems were so beautiful that I started to copy some and tried to remember them by heart. It gave me more understanding of poetry and to read more of the poets mentioned in the book.
A wonderful collection of poetry for all of life's ups and downs. The themes are fluid and subtle but still mesh together well, as you journey through life through some of the world's most famous and Aoibhín's favourite poems.
