May isn’t your average child. Neither is Ted. May is controlling and manipulative. Ted is brilliant. May is obsessed with Ted.
May’s love for Ted isn’t just some childhood crush. She knows that. Ted knows that, too. At least he should. They’re meant to be together, right? That’s why May has spent her whole life waiting for him, watching him. Ted just needs to understand. Then, everything will be perfect.
May and Ted is about passion, it’s about conditional and unconditional love, and it’s about what a person will do to make things right.
J.D. Robertson is a retired corporate writer and journalist. She has a degree in Creative Writing and Journalism and has won an award and honourable mention for her non-fiction piece, Goodbye Dad. J.D. lives in Edmonton, Alberta, with her husband, Bill, and her puggle, Charlee.
Please note, I've recently had my work stolen and pirated, possibly poorly formatted copies of May and Ted might be floating around the internet. Please let me know if you see any copies of May and Ted where the title is misspelled or my name (J. D. Robertson) is slightly changed.
Okay, so, there’s a LOT to unpack in this book. First of all, it was written in 3 years (with gaps in between) and perspectives of May & Ted.
May becomes obsessed with Ted when they were kids, even later in life when Ted tells her he is gay and is in a relationship. She still thinks he’s in love with her (even tho that was never the case). May has a lot of issues and constantly pursued Ted, enough that it led to what happened in the second part of the book.
This book has a lot of triggers in it such as rape and stalking and even gun violence among other things. I actually think it should become a required reading, as well as a regular for book clubs. There’s a lot of things to unpack and discuss here. It’s definitely a psychological thriller of a rollercoaster ride.
The only issue I have with it is that the ending was horrible. It didn’t resolve anything I felt like. After all that they went thru, this is the end?
Remarkable writing. I read it straight through The slow building tension, the heart stopping sadness,. It all pulled me into the story and the evolution of May and Ted s relationship Real good reading
Interesting read. A friend recommended the book as he is familiar with the author. Purchased on a whim and without real knowledge of what the book was truly about. Direct. Suspenseful. Unexpected. Twisted. Perspective is such a peculiar thing!!!
Well I wasn't expecting this, from a book I got for free on kindle! This was just brilliant, different and new, full of suspense, disturbing at times, but also made me cry. A bit of everything, very well put together. Characters all believable, and very true to the time periods. Hope the author writes more novels soon.
May and Ted are two children living in the same neighborhood, the story details their life experiences. The two characters have very different temperaments and their own unique challenges. May is controlling, manipulative and gregarious, while Ted is introverted and clever. May becomes increasingly obsessed with Ted - this fixation leads to her stalking Ted and his partner. May’s mental state deteriorates as the story unfolds.
The author focuses on several themes throughout the story, including emotional stress, physical and emotional abuse, sexuality and gender roles. May is subject to abuse and manipulation by family members from a very young age. This is a gritty and heartbreaking story, not for the fainthearted or squeamish. The author describes the events in the story in a gritty and stark manner.
J.D. Robertson has written a book that paints vivid pictures of the complexity of mental illness. The writing is strong and hard hitting. Overall, it was an interesting story that could have been improved with a more detailed outcome – the ending left some loose ends. I have scored the book 3 stars out of 5; my rating would have been higher if this had been addressed. The book will appeal to readers who enjoy uncompromising stories with psychological themes.

Before I delve into a book, I read over other reviews to help decide if I want to spend any amount of time reading this particular book. I enjoy psychology-based books, ones based on clinical research and that was the impression I took from the reviews for this book. Along with it being entertaining, delightful, comedic, etc. I found it crude, disgusting, sick, and shameful throughout 99% of the writing. I only finished it because it was free and I felt obligated to read through it to give an honest opinion. I have no doubt people such as May exist: thank God I haven't met them. Thankfully, I've never been on the other side of erotomania, either. I'm sure it exists, but this read was one I could have skipped right passed. Very vulgar in language, themes, and actions. Such a sad story of inappropriate feelings being displayed in so many criminal and destructive ways. Definitely not a 'feel good' story.
I was tempted to abandon this book after reading the gross details in the first chapter, but I persisted...and was glad I did. This is an intriguing story of a young woman who is obsessed with a childhood friend and believes that he returns her affections.
The characters' thinking and emotions are well-captured; the plot is, for the most part, believable (lots of parallels can be made to celebrity stalkers); and the ending is satisfying. The woman as perpetrator and the man as victim is an unusual twist to usual 'stalker' stories.
The weaknesses of this novel are the "Uncle Jake" storyline and the lack of overall plot unity. My sense is that, with more expert editing, the story would flow more easily and thus engage the reader more fully.
Note: Some readers will be put off by the crude language and sexual content.
I don’t know how to write a good review for a book that had me horrified the whole time. May is a whole new level of psychotic and unhinged and the things she did because of her infatuation and obsession with Ted were INSANE. I N S A N E. This is a fantastic stalker book but be ready to be grossed out and terrified …and maybe even looking over your shoulder while reading to make sure May isn’t behind you.
Fascinating plot. May's complex feelings for Ted, which she decides is love. Ted's repeated efforts to explain he is gay. It quickly spiral out of control, in a way reminiscent of fatal Attraction. Compelling, if a bit overly long. It could have used a bit of editing. Still, a very good read.
I really enjoyed reading this book, it had that feel that I wanted from the description. The thriller element was there and had that suspenseful atmosphere that I was expecting from the genre. J.D. Robertson has a strong writing style and was glad I got to read this, it was everything that I wanted.

I love to read debut novels to find a new author to read. May trapped me into this one. Her troubles started young and just grew from there. It was interesting to see the perspective of a male being obsessed over when many books written in this way are men doing the obsessing.
Bought this book on a whim after meeting the author at a book signing... I was not expecting this. If you are looking for a book that captivates you to the point where you forget you're even reading a book, this is it. Amazing. Very unique.
To me, this book was about conflict—in relationships and within oneself. Each character had their way of justifying and reconciling their actions. Nature vs. nurture. I found this book to be a good read; certainly thought provoking.
First time published author, J.D.Robertson hit the nail on the head with this book. It had me on the edge of my seat. Begs the question, is it genetics or are you a product of your environment. Great Read!
Perception is reality. May and Ted makes that very clear. May sees love. Ted sees obsession. While I normally hate stories written from multiple first person perspectives, the style serves a clear purpose in this story and is actually what made it intriguing.

An emotional story of childhood friends and what they mean to each other . A great read. I received this ARC copy via Booksprouts and recommend this book to other readers.
I didn't think I would like this was much was I did. This is a new author go me and found this book by a recommendation from Amazon. May and Ted's story is not a love story. There are a lot of triggers in this book such as rape, kidnapping, incest, mental illness, and stalking. The extent of May's warped mind of this romance between her and Ted was crazy and terrifying. I couldn't imagine being Ted and constantly worrying when she would come and destruct his life. I did not like the ending. I felt unsatisfied with it. I just needed a like bit more closure.
