Durante a época da Guerra Civil Americana (1861-65), a população da remota cidadezinha de Hailstone, em Montana, está faminta e com um número crescente de desaparecidos. A situação piora quando uma garota local chamada Mary desaparece enquanto procura comida com sua mãe.
Publicado originalmente em inglês de forma seriada no site Comixology, Hailstone ganha edição brasileira na íntegra pela marca DarkSide® Graphic Novel. Com roteiro de Rafael Scavone e ilustrações de Rafael de Latorre, a graphic novel reúne horror, ficção científica, ficção histórica, faroeste e mistério em uma história emocionante e assustadora. Entre as inspirações para a história, Scavone destaca séries como True Detective, filmes como O Regresso e A Bruxa, quadrinhos como Hellboy e romances como O Grande Deus Pã, de Arthur Machen, e O Iluminado, de Stephen King.
O xerife Denton Ross, traumatizado e incapaz de ajudar seu povo, e seu assistente Tobias, intervêm para manter a paz, mas seus esforços os colocam em um caminho perigoso. De acordo com o roteirista Rafael Scavone, “Hailstone apresenta uma história de mistério, misturada com elementos históricos, de terror e sobrenaturais, todos temperados com a boa e velha ação do faroeste. Se eu tivesse que escolher apenas um gênero para defini-lo, eu definitivamente escolheria weird fiction”.
O ilustrador Rafael de Latorre pinta uma atmosfera bonita, mas incômoda, uma combinação que casa perfeitamente com o teor do enredo. O ambiente pesado que ele criou fica mais denso à medida que a história vai aprofundando os medos dos personagens.
Todos esses elementos permitiram que os autores brincassem com sequências e ritmos. Hailstone é um daqueles quadrinhos que revelam novas camadas a cada releitura, imperdível para os amantes de uma boa história, que prende o leitor desde as primeiras páginas.
Rafael Scavone começou a escrever histórias em quadrinhos em 2014. Seus principais trabalhos incluem Mulher-Maravilha, Grandes Astros Batman e Hit-Girl. Em 2017 adaptou o premiado conto de Neil Gaiman, “Um Estudo em Esmeralda”. Seus trabalhos mais recentes são Hidden Society e Funny Creek.
Rafael de Latorre é um quadrinista brasileiro. Ele fez sua estreia com Fade Out: Painless Suicide, seus trabalhos anteriores incluem Superzero e a série best-seller Animosity, ambos para Aftershock Comics, o que o levou a ser indicado ao Ringo Awards em 2017, e ao prêmio Russ de artista mais promissor, no mesmo ano.

This was almost a 3-star rating but in the end, it was an enjoyable reading so I couldn't do it.
First, the easy part, the art through the whole story is simply amazing. Perfect for the story. It's definitely the best part of the book.
Now, the story and the writing is not up to the same quality. The writing in the first two chapters was not that great but it got better.
As for the story, I like the concept but I was expecting more. I didn't like that we get to understand what is behind the missing cases so early in the story, and at the end everything feels very hollow.
It was still very enjoyable to read but it could have been much better. The art saves it.

Wow beautiful illustrations and a haunting story. This was so quick, but left me with all the feels. It left a feeling in my heart that resembles grief because I know humans are capable of such evil. It’s a great read and I look forward to the rest. *Update* Turns out I read the copy that was all 5 stories in 1 book. Now I'm sad because there are no more. I wish they had stretched it out more and given more details. I would read more of this if they made it.

Hailstone has some very good character designs and the overall plot is compelling. For the story it's telling, it might have benefitted from being extended out a couple issues. Some characters feel under explored, but overall there's enough positive here that I would recommend it.

Livro ótimo! O visual, as páginas, o traço, cores, tudo perfeito. Enredo sensacional.

Story starts as a interesting, solemn western and turns into something completely different. I really didn't get into this one and it wasn't solely on the story twist at the end that I didn't like.

Really Really solid piece of work. A western horror that is pitched to perfection in terms of the setting (isolation) the season (starvation and winter) and the story (sorry no clues).
The Power in these one shpt stories is because your time with them is finite there is a real sense of jeopardy as to what might happen. You do not know if the characters you like are going to make it or not and you do not know where the twists will be.
This was a nicely written story. I liked the characters and their voices were different. The plot was a little too flagged and was not breaking hugely new ground but it did not diminish the horror of the situation or the story.
The art is wonderful. It suits the the story perfectly and I thought was particularly good in the action sequences.
