Shopocalypse Saga #2

BuyMort: Smart Shopper: How I Became the Accidental Warlord of Arizona

Rate this book
The algorithms predicted that Nu-Earth would fall. That all Nu-Earth humans would soon be extinct.

The algorithms didn't understand Tyson Dawes.

After pacifying the old Earth underground military base and defeating the Sleem, Tyson Dawes and Silken Sands are flush with new items and morties. But the Dearth Conglomerate has been circling over them in Arizona, and they want his land.

Which wouldn't be such a problem if the boss weren't such an incompetent and spoiled child.

Bad business decisions, cronyistic impulses and an unrelenting invisible hand continue to hem in Tyson and his Nu-Earth refugees. Allies fall and life, already cheap, moves to the discount bin as he's forced to face the bottom line.

This story features an amalgamation of Amazon, Walmart, every service fee, sales algorithm, membership perk, advertising jingo, Microsoft mascot, and insane discount that you have ever experienced in your life coupled with the madness of the multiverse, a dash of invisible hand monopolism, feudalism, straight-up cronyism, and LOTS of profanity.

This MC is unlike others you have read before. He cares about other humans, even his crappy boss. He doesn’t seek to be the leader — he just naturally is.

It’s him leading the desperate and hopeless against the machine.

There is fantasy violence, base-building, tons of market loot, monsters, a dungeon, affiliate and credit levels, and progression. It is single PoV and has no harem elements.

It has been an adjustment since BuyMort took over. Most of Earth's population is gone, alien races are attacking, and food is a constant battle. But, I have established an alliance with the hippie commune in exchange for food. Our biggest concerns are Mr. Sada and the sleem infestation. Luckily I have an app that gives me pointers and wants the same thing I do: to destroy BuyMort. To do this I need to establish my affiliate and save as many people as possible. Even if that means that some dead weight must be removed.
I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. I was crazy about the first book with the main character's sense of humor and that has not changed. While he is still getting used to stepping up and taking charge from the person he was before BuyMort began he does what needs done. I can't say I was surprised what happened with Mr. Sada and I am glad that they have their operation in place.

I am curious about the new development of the elvish people and how Tyson plans to resolve it. We got a bit more insight into Molls in this book and I am happy to say that Phyllis is still a big part of the affiliate. She is still my favorite character and I'm sure the granny will continue out the series as long as old age doesn't take her first.

I enjoyed the addition of the new characters Axle, Jada, and Cube. Cube seems like he is going to be a handful, but it will be worth it for what he provides. Also really curious if they finally found a way to deal with the stupid tape. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book in the series.

This book will be released on November 10th, so if you haven't already read book one there is still time before book 2 comes out. Both are impossible to put down and every second is enjoyable.

Surprisingly good, a bit dark

I'll just come out and say it. The ending was pretty darn dark. Overall I feel like this novel had the right level of drama, but I have to state this: the series seems to be amping up in a way where corporate intrigue and political scheming will start to take the forefront of the drama. For me, that's a deal breaker. I truly hope I'm wrong, but I also know the next book is likely already written due to this being a royal road series. Honestly I don't have high hopes going into the next book.

Alot of people enjoy that kind of drama, but to me it's just frustrating and feels forced and weak. This book had a fair amount, but nothing too bad. But the foreshadowing was very heavy with the fact it will likely become more prominent.

Like the first book, this one again feels fairly realistic given the theme, and everything feels like it would naturally occur. The world building is fantastic, and the characters are enjoyable and different. The authors have a true talent for those two aspects. I will say that a more professional editor is needed at this point, as a lot of sections required multiple rereads to confirm I was understanding the situation. A good example is dealing with the starfish affiliate. It repeats phrases, but it isn't clear that it's glitching out. It takes some imagination to picture that. There are also a couple points in the story that were written twice. And several areas had very strange paragraphs, clearly a thorough look needs to happen.
My guess, the author just copy/pasted the royal road version over to Kindle without any serious edits. A common flaw with RR authors.

Anyways! Great book, really hope the sequel is similar and not to political.

Solid improvement over the first book. My main issue with the first one was that it had some slow parts but this one fixed this issue. I really enjoy the mystery around the Teslak Cooperative and I'm looking forward to finding out more. I find it kind of sad that the main character has an aversion to Clippy, I'd really like to see more of him, but I'm hoping there's more in the coming books.
Already started book three!

BuyMort: Smart Shopper: How I Became the Accidental Warlord of Arizona (Shopocalypse Saga #2)

Author: Damien Hanson

In a world where survival depends on your shopping prowess, Damien Hanson delivers a unique, hilarious, and often surprisingly insightful take on the apocalypse.

Damien Hanson's *"BuyMort: Smart Shopper"* is the second installment of the *Shopocalypse Saga*, continuing the madcap adventures of BuyMort, a smart-shopping savant who, through an absurd series of events, ends up as an unexpected leader in post-apocalyptic Arizona. In this installment, Hanson ramps up the absurdity and humor, while maintaining a clever critique on modern consumerism, survival, and leadership.

Plot Overview:

BuyMort, our lovable, accidental hero, is thrust into the chaos of the Shopocalypse—a consumer-driven dystopia where corporate strategies and survival skills intersect. This book picks up from the first, where BuyMort, armed only with his bargain-hunting skills, ends up running a faction in the Arizona wasteland.

The once mundane act of shopping becomes a high-stakes battle for resources.
Leadership and power dynamics are explored in quirky and unexpected ways.
The plot weaves in themes of loyalty, strategy, and personal growth under duress.

But what really makes this novel stand out is Hanson's witty, tongue-in-cheek writing style that transforms a potentially bleak premise into a comedic rollercoaster.

Writing Style & Humor:

Damien Hanson excels at blending humor with insightful social commentary. The world he creates is absurd, but it’s that very absurdity that allows readers to question the state of modern consumer culture and the lengths to which it can be stretched. Hanson’s writing is filled with:

Quirky, often laugh-out-loud humor that keeps the pace light, even during intense moments.
Sharp dialogue that mirrors the cynical outlook of a post-apocalyptic world, yet with a humorous twist.
Action scenes that, while exaggerated, feel exciting and fresh because of their unique premise.

The novel often reads like a parody of dystopian fiction, but it does so with heart. Hanson doesn’t just aim for cheap laughs—his humor is layered with meaning, making readers think about what we prioritize in our own lives.

Character Development:

BuyMort himself is a fascinating character—an ordinary man thrust into extraordinary circumstances. What makes him so compelling is his relatability. He’s not a hardened warlord or a cunning strategist; he's a guy who knows how to find the best deals on clearance items.

Through his journey, we see BuyMort develop from a reactive participant in the chaos to a more assertive, if still reluctant, leader.
The supporting characters, though quirky, all add depth to the story. Each has their own motivations and quirks, leading to funny yet touching moments.

The way Hanson portrays leadership as something not necessarily tied to competence but to the right person being in the wrong place at the wrong time adds a refreshing spin to the narrative.

Themes & Social Commentary:

While the book is primarily a humorous adventure, it’s hard to ignore the underlying commentary on:

Consumer culture: In a world where shopping becomes a survival skill, Hanson pokes fun at our obsession with material goods and corporate manipulation.
Leadership: BuyMort’s rise to power is as much a satire on leadership in modern society as it is a comedic plot device.
Survival & community: The novel explores how people form alliances, communities, and systems of governance in extreme circumstances.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:

Original and hilarious premise that puts a fresh spin on the post-apocalyptic genre.
Fast-paced and filled with clever dialogue and action.
Witty social commentary that doesn’t detract from the entertainment value.

Cons:

The humor, while clever, might not appeal to everyone, especially if you prefer more serious dystopian fiction.
Some readers might find the absurdity overwhelming at times, as it leans heavily into parody.

Fans of satirical, dystopian fiction will find much to enjoy in BuyMort's journey, though the humor may not land for those who prefer more serious tones.

Conclusion:

"BuyMort: Smart Shopper: How I Became the Accidental Warlord of Arizona" is a wildly entertaining, tongue-in-cheek novel that combines shopping, survival, and satire into a unique reading experience. Damien Hanson’s wit shines throughout, making readers both laugh and reflect on the strange nature of consumerism and leadership in extreme scenarios. For anyone looking for a light-hearted yet sharp critique of modern society packaged in a fast-paced dystopian adventure, this book delivers in spades.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

A solid 4 out of 5 stars! This is a highly entertaining and clever read, but the niche humor and absurdity may not be for everyone.

Don’t get me wrong—I’m still enjoying the story. But Book 2 became chaos; Tyson is juggling too many different things and interests and more can appear at any time. Although possibly an accurate scenario in a semi-apocalypse, it reads scrambled. The book could also use additional editing in some spots and the ending is abrupt. The main positive of the chaos is that it helped the ending feel more natural, as otherwise it is suddenly not in tone with the rest of the book. This would’ve been even more jarring if the emotions hadn’t read “disorder” prior. The ending feels like an adaption of a webnovel where a chapter was chosen to conclude with... and I found out it is.

Hope Book 3 can resume some storylines put on pause in Book 2 in order to juggle the numerous new additions.

Series Info/Source: This is the second book in the Shopocalypse series. I bought this for audiobook from Audible.

Thoughts: I think I enjoyed this book even more than the first book in this series. Each of these books only covers a few days, but a lot happens in that time.

When we start off here Tyson has escaped the Sleem and decided to work with the gobs to create a Sleem farm for profit. He still has to decide what to do with his jerk boss and is learning how to take advantage of BuyMort. As Tyson pulls more people together and tries to create a safe haven, he finds himself taking on more and more leadership.

This is such a darkly funny read, but it has a lot of heart as well. I love how hard Tyson works to try and keep everyone safe and how he is trying to make things better. We have a number of new characters join the story and I particularly enjoyed the gnolls. It is fun to watch Tyson try to make friends with everyone (well not everyone, but a lot of people) and to see how he gets them to start working together. I also love the addition of the dark elves and Beholder to all of this mayhem.

This is action packed and fast paced; there is a lot of character growth. We learn more and more about the BuyMort system and how to navigate it. We also continue to get hints at a rebellion brewing. This volume had less drug use, as Tyson realizes that he has better things to do with his time and needs a clear head. It has more star suit. It also had less objectification of women, although Tyson is still obsessed with Mohls (sp?) the snake priestess. All in all, I thought this was better than the first book, and I really loved it.

This is gory and violent, and fairly offensive at times, but it is also hilarious and heartfelt.

I listened to this on audiobook and the narration is really well done. This is super fun to listen to, so if you enjoy audiobooks, I would recommend listening to this one.

My Summary (5/5): Overall I loved this and am eager to continue the series. This is action packed with an intriguing world and characters. I love the little mysteries that hint at something bigger happening in the background, and I love watching Tyson pull people together and take on more responsibility as he tries to build something amazing out of this apocalypse. I would recommend to fans of Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman. This has a similar feel and, while not being quite as spectacular as DCC, is still very entertaining.

I really love the premise of this series, but unfortunately, this book seems to double down on what I didn't like about the first book, and as a result, I struggled with this one.

There's a lot more mindless action in this book as the story has hit its stride and the author is trying to establish less with each scene and instead focusing on each action scene for its own sake. This is a mistake because without each action scene meaningfully moving story elements forward, it just becomes boring and tedious to read.

There's also an issue of a lot of things being started and not enough finished. The protagonist has so much thrown at him that it is becoming chaotic. It would be good to start closing out a few issues before moving on to new ones so that the story can move forward at a more controlled pace. Spinning plates is a perfect analogy for the problem that this is creating.

Finally, maybe my biggest issue with this series is the lack of downtime. The plot moves from one disaster to the next, never pausing to try and enjoy a moment or two, develop some relationships, or basically do any of the things that make life worth living. It's a non-stop slog of disaster after disaster and it basically got exhausting enough that I called it a day on this book at the 60% mark. I took a break from reading it to go do something else and I just couldn't find the strength to pick it up again.

So overall, this is a series with a really interesting premise and I thought the first book capitalised on it enough that I wanted to keep reading. However, in this book that premise is getting so buried under so many things that I'm not enjoying that it no longer has room to breathe, let alone carry the series.

So it's 3-stars for me on this one, the third of which is mainly to account for how personal tastes may differ from reader to reader.

Questo numero è ottimo: risolve tutti i problemi di gestione dei tempi - trame e sottotrame vengono risolte e aperte. Ottimo world building con i primi accenni a cosa è storage.

I don't give out many 5-star reviews, so when I do its normally because it scratched an itch I didn't realize needed scratching. BuyMort scratches the itch.

The characters are decent, the story is mostly well written with a few strange oddities cropping up here and there, but what makes this worth reading is the fact that the story itself is different. The MC is NOT the perfect personification of the author's moral alignments and has flaws that crop up in believable and sometimes unexpected ways. The choices he makes are grounded in situation and often against his own will, which further extrapolates on the feeling of desperation and urgency that seem to be fueling each choice.

I didn't expect the ending at the onset, but it was neatly packaged in a justifiable manner. Leaving the reader FEELING the weight of the decision. Bravo!

Feeling down? Future not looking bright? Well, worry not as it could be monumentally worse!

Welcome to Buy☆Mort.

Fear an alien invasion? Falling stock prices? A Grey goo scenario? The ever-growing e-commerce iron fist of Amazon?

Well you're in luck because Buy☆Mort is all that and much much worse.

The painkillers and on-again-off-again flirtatious nature of the local snake priest should help smooth away that anxiety.
Be prepared to break some shit. Like a LOT of shit. Makes dealing with the trauma easier...nah I'm just kidding this is still gonna hurt a lot. You have no idea.

3.5 stars rounded up.
I do enjoy it. But it's just too random and thrown together. The arc is built with a few large hurdles to tackle, but the book ends and they've sort of done one, and it was mostly done for them. There should be significantly more action and plotting, but there's just so much random chatting, calling each other on the phone, and the same "jokes" over and over. I want to like it more. But pretty frustrating. And Molls is a big drain on the story. Supposedly from a high society family but had has no idea how the real world BuyMort works? And the overly sexual desires between a human and giant snake doesn't exactly work for me... It's been 5 days since Earth ended.

I've already finished book 3, and the cringe continued...

When I read book 2, I was happy that the authors reduced the page time of the insta-love relationship that they were setting up between Mols and Tyson. They pushed too hard with the pairing and it felt unnatural. I was waiting for them to tell us he took too long to stop the starfish suit from repairing his brain and he was now experiencing the side effects, but no.

The primary storyline is cool. It's what keeps me reading and funneling my audiobook credits and Kindle selections to the series.

The subplot direction, however, makes for an unreliable narrator and it is nearly unbearable.

"BuyMort: Smart Shopper" is a zany adventure set in a dystopian world, where Tyson Dawes unexpectedly becomes a warlord. The story offers a unique protagonist, Tyson, who balances humour and leadership. It combines action, base-building, and satire on corporate culture, though some may find the love interest between Tyson and the naga a bit cringy. Overall, it's an entertaining and thought-provoking read in the LitRPG genre.

My New Favorite Series

Very fast paced. Great characters and story. It’s a new world. Survive and thrive or die. It’s science fiction and horror, but with some dark humor. The main character is on a quest and we are there with him. I am not a gamer, but love quest based stories; I’m loving this one. I’m also thinking life would be very interesting to me if BuyMort would land on this Earth.

Back to this very enjoyable SF apocalypse LitRPG adventure. Gotta built that post-apoc settlement on earth, thanks to Galactic Amazon. Um. I mean, BuyMort.

Ever wonder what a true capitalist nightmare is? Try this out. There's even a pretty great market on dead bodies, and instant transportation for any product is fantastic.

Bloody, funny, and I feel like I'm in a sim battle manager. :)

Excellent 2nd novel where we see Tyson struggling to protect his people from other Affiliates as well as from the idiocy of his boss, Mr. Sata. BuyMort can be your best friend or your worst enemy so it's Tyson's best interest to understant this 'app' that is destroying his world. Being a smart shopper is the only way to survive.

dark comedy

I would compare this series to ‘Dungeon Crawler Carl’. Both are dealing with an apocalypse, both deal with darker sides of humanity, and both have a somewhat broken MC.

Looking forward to book 3.

Shopping was never so fun

This series is a hoot and a change from so many of the grim
apocalyptic novels. BuyMort takes over planets with the usual monsters, but they buy and sell just about anything. Can't wait to read the next book.

From Partner to Boss

Tyson had a real battle with the Sleem in the base, but he survived but just barely. He is creating a strong area for his people, and he is doing what is best for them. I found one glitch in chapter 10. It is printed as Chapter 3, but that was not that bad.

I think I will give book three a try.

The protagonist finally stopped being a carpet for everyone. It sucks that I had to read two entire books for this to happen.

Hope better things happen in the sequel.

Book 2 was a great listen.
Not only is the idea behind the story very original, but the thought and imagination put into all of the BuyMort adverts is great.
This book ends well with the out come to end one of Tyson’s biggest problems

Another Audible listen.

Just as good as the first one. I love all the characters besides Molls. I don't know if it's the narrators voice for her or if its just her character but she just annoys me.

Was a little sad at the end which was a nice touch to a scifi/litrpg type of story for me
