What a non-stop ride this was!

I had the absolute pleasure of receiving a copy of this book directly from the author. He popped into my workplace (we sell sci-fi and fantasy novels, among other things) to drop a copy off and we ended up talking quite enthusiastically together about it. It was pure joy to hear how much passion he spoke with, and it got me very excited to read it!

The story follows Ramulas, a humble farmer just trying to take care of his family. Only his shrouded past comes back to cause some trouble when a mysterious woman asks for his help. Suddenly he's thrust into danger and our adventure begins in earnest.

I really enjoyed the pace here. This is an adventure story that races along, the action never stopping. It was easy to get caught up in and I quickly found myself in the world within these pages.

The writing I feel is perfect for a middle-grade age group; it tells the story quite simply with no embellishment and doesn't go to any great depths for character building, focused instead on telling a fantastic story. That's not to say these aren't complex characters - they are. We're just often told about them and their personalities, rather than shown. For example, the relationship between Ramulas and Pip becomes something akin to a father/daughter relationship, however we don't really see how this builds, making it harder to fully appreciate the symbolism. Yet the relationship is still one we're invested in. There are also some things that seem drilled in unnecessarily, such as moments of foreshadowing, which may irritate older readers yet is perfect for reminding younger ones.

I was promised a rollercoaster of emotions and this book certainly delivered! There is joy, pain, anger, sadness, compassion, hope ... you will find yourself truly invested in what these characters experience.

Minor typo on page 311 (neither should be nether) but aside from that, the writing sucked me in. Some of the sections were a bit short, and jumping between characters with unrelated stories was a bit jarring to experience within the chapter. But the shorter sections made it easier to keep reading so again, perfect for younger ones (or people who are distracted easily, like me) whose attention span may not be quite as long. To jump from paragraph to paragraph helped add to the breakneck pace of the book, so overall I think it worked. Maybe just needed a smoother transition in some places.

Some of the characters are rather familiar and the logic of the story is questionable in places, but while these things normally bother me I just accepted it so easily in this story. I think there was enough of the story that was unique that I really wasn't too concerned about logic. I think if you can read without judging you really are rewarded with a rich, colourful tale.

This really was a fun read that I devoured easily. It may not be for those looking for epic world building, but if you're keen for a fun, fast fantasy that you don't have to take too seriously then look no further. The characters are a delight to get to know, and I'm keen to learn more about them in book 2!

With many thanks to Adam Scholte for a copy

I understand this is a debut novel, but I'm going to be brutally honest about everything.

It's like the author has never heard of the saying "show don't tell" because the whole thing was written like pure shit. It feels more like a first draft. You can tell the mediocre plot was inspired by a DnD session and 80-90s movies. all the women's characters centred entirely around family and maternal instincts, and all the men are focused on power, whether for good or bad reasons. the grammatical errors feel like this wasn't read through properly. What was the editor doing? Was there even an editor? the plot twists are told to us, the characters motivations are only told to us, all the world-building (or what little there is) is told to us, and we're even blatantly told when a character is good or evil. nothing, and i mean NOTHING is left to interpretation. It's like the readers are stupid. What is the demographic for this book? just 'lovers of fantasy'? but is this meant to appeal to younger readers or adults, because the "graphic" torture and violent scenes seem to be written for more mature readers, but everything else is written at the level of a 12 year old.

A big problem that stood out to me was just racist caricatures used as replacements for 'fantasy races'. There is the 'Nihon people' who are described as having 'flat faces and almond eyes who speak in a fast language Ramulas couldn't understand'. NIHON means JAPAN IN JAPANESE. These people are just Japanese but they're described as some strange people never seen before. Also, they only appear for 2 sentences as background NPCs, what's the point of including them?
And then there's the Khili or whatever. They're black warriors with braids who wear NOTHING but loincloths, even though it's meant to be Winter or approaching Winter in the plot. What, no armour for these epic warriors? They are slaves to the white king named Zachary. (Zachary is meant to be a guy who was once nice but went paranoid and angry after his wife died. we learn nothing about his wife and this information is just told to us with no introspection into the character itself, but anyway..) Also, everytime the Khili speak, there is always a line that says, "my people." "my people do not harm children" "my people serve the king." it just rubbed me up the wrong way.

A quote that pissed me off: "The mess on the floor represented his life. he wanted out of this life." Riveting stuff. thanks for telling us what the floor represents, you know we're supposed to interpret that for ourselves, right?

Another problem: overused phrases. All these characters do is "smile" or "shrug". Jacqueline can't do anything without her "maternal instincts" being mentioned. Shigar can't end a single paragraph without us being told "he wants out of this life". yeah, i got that the first 6 times Shigar was mentioned. The POV's switch too quickly because the writing is underdeveloped and rushed. There was once five different perspectives within two pages.

The "epic" battle was done and dusted within a page. The main villain went through the portal he'd been building for 30 chapters, found the protagonist, and flung him through the air, and attacked the horse and Pip within, i kid you not, 3 SENTENCES. and Ramulas just "knows" all these spells to use against him just in time. The magic is all convenience and there's no explanation on how it works. It's just described as flashes of multi-coloured lights. Yeah, like the written form of a bad CGI effect in an 80s wizard movie.

Oriel was only there to infodump some shit plot and disappear. Pip was only written to be the sidekick. Ramulas' family is shoved aside when they were no longer needed to show what a family man Ramulas is. The villains all get a segment every chapter where they do some evil shit like randomly killing people for no reason or thinking about their evil plans. It's so fucking goofy.

i can honestly go on more but i'm just ranting and ripping this book to shreds at this point. Despite the average and uninspired plot, if this was properly written with fleshed out characters that weren't so one-dimensional, this could have been a decent read.

I can see why the publishing company went bankrupt. They were just accepting anything.

I am very conflicted on this story. I enjoyed it, but also found it hard to read and full of a surprisingly high amount of typos or grammatical errors. I’m not sure if the prose was written poorly, or just in a way that really, really didn’t vibe with me. Super short sentences, constant telling and not showing, repeating basic information as if the story couldn’t trust the reader to remember anything, random exposition, etc. I understand this is the author’s first published book (according to Goodreads), so I’m gonna still stick with the next two (three!) in hopes this improves.

Before I get on to a few other negatives, I’ll mention what I did enjoy! The cover art absolutely sold me on the books and made them an instant buy when I met the author at Clunes. The characters (except a few) I liked, even if their interactions at times felt plot-forced or some of them two dimensional (King, Remus, James, Sheriff, anybody vaguely antagonistic). Pip was by far my favourite character. The ideas behind the story were good too, and I’m keen to see how things develop.

Ramulas’ reasons for not talking about felt incredibly contrived and doesn’t even make sense, he could just mention one without the other. Whenever the plot needed him to trust someone, he just ‘knew’. Whenever the plot needed him to not, he just wouldn’t. Characters overall (Pip, K’ayden, etc.) were weirdly super trusting when the story needed them to be, despite constantly telling us how they couldn’t risk trusting anybody. Bit of dissonance generated there.

Exposition dumps were a bit of an issue in this story, making the start slow and the pace slow down again whenever something new arrives. At one point in the story some exposition about Remus is given by Oriel that doesn’t really make sense for her to know. She talks about stuff that Remus doesn’t know about himself, from 60 years ago, long before Oriel was even born. I understand we need the reader to learn this truth, and maybe there’s a reason in later books for her to know this, but it just didn’t make sense to me.

Jaqualine’s sole trait is maternal instincts (repeated every–single–time she does anything), and at one point there’s a vaguely sexist line about ‘women are unable to express their emotions’ (despite the opposite being true regarding men!), but a later line (pg 160) suggests this was just the mc being sexist, not the author. Hopefully some character development for him whilst travelling with Pip. Grace spelt with lower case g. Misc. typos that I didn’t bother jotting down, some really awkwardly written lines too (see below). A better proofreading could have caught these, but they’re mostly minor and you (at least I) can make out what was intended to be written fairly well.

Just a few oddities that stood out, with page numbers in case a revision is ever made and the author finds these useful:
47 — “Ramulas, accepted the hand and allowed the Khilli to pull him to his feet. Ramulas, almost collapsed from the pain in his legs.“
274 — “…that he stood with any injuries…” typo for without
297 — “The was so much to do in so little time.”
311 — “…holding its neither region.”

"The Beginning of the End," the first book in "The Ramulas Chronicles" series.

From the very first page, this book sets an intense and mysterious tone.

The protagonist, Ramulas, is a farmer leading a peaceful life until he is thrust into a magical civil war between worlds.

The author does an excellent job of building tension and intrigue as Ramulas begins to uncover long-buried secrets about his past and his abilities.

One of the standout features of this book is its unique and imaginative world-building. The concept of a magical civil war between worlds is fascinating, and the author does an excellent job of describing the different realms and their inhabitants.

The inclusion of Ramulas' ability to communicate with animals adds an extra layer of complexity to the world-building, making it feel even more rich and detailed.

The characters in "The Beginning of the End" are also well-crafted and engaging.

Ramulas is a sympathetic protagonist, and the reader can't help but root for him as he navigates the dangerous waters of this magical conflict. The introduction of the mysterious young woman adds a touch of romance and intrigue, while Ramulas' daughters' unexplained abilities add an element of danger and mystery to the story.

I had the privilege of beta-reading "The Beginning of the End" and I have to say it ticked all my boxes. The moment I began reading the first pages, I was immediately thrown into the plot. The story follows a farmer named Ramulas, who gets pulled into a magical civil war between worlds and must use his ability to communicate with animals to save his family and the existence of his world. The world-building and character development fit so wonderfully with this journey of self-discovery and the hint of found family trope.

Adam’s writing style is beautiful, it allows you to easily visualize every scene and dialogue, which made it even more immersive. If you’re into magic, action, and fantasy, and you’re ready for an epic adventure, this should be your next read! The plot is intriguing, the characters are complex and interesting, and the story keeps you hooked from start to finish!

As a beta-reader, it was an amazing experience to see this book come to life and to see the Adam’s vision come together. I was able to provide feedback and suggestions that helped shaped the final product into something even more exciting and engaging.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to fans of fantasy, it was a thrilling ride from start to finish and I found myself thinking about the story long after I had put the book down. It’s a truly well-written story, one that I couldn’t put down and it left me wanting for more!

"Nerdection Must Read"

From the beginning, the story was fast-paced. The action literally followed from one sentence to another. The pace, together with a straightforward story made it an excellent book to delve into. The book, in my opinion, is an absolute treat for the eyes.

The writing is simple enough that fans of Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and other adventure middle-grade readers will love to read this. The adventure alloyed with great characters made this book worth reading.

While reading this book, I felt several emotions. It seemed like the author threw a rock with numerous emotions on my face. I laughed with the characters and became sad and angry for them. In fact, your heart will grow for these characters.

Oriel was my favorite character and how she defied Remus was exceptional. I also liked Ramulus’ character due to his caring and protective nature.

The friendship that grew between the characters, how they were ready to fight for one another, and how courageous they all were is magical. I really adore their friendship.

The tale was amazing and drew my attention rather quickly. The fantasy aspects, the magic, and the writing style were exceptional and to the point.

If you love reading fantasy, you should read The Beginning Of The End. The story is sure to hook you up and make you enjoy it.

I was so excited to read this book. From the very first page I was hooked. It's an edge of the seat saga, fantasy novel that is action packed from the first chapter. I literally couldn't put it down. I related with the characters so well and was sad, happy, excited, nervous and in anticipation throughout the whole novel. I cannot wait to see the follow up to this amazing journey. Adam J Scholte has introduced an amazing new world of fantasy filled with many exciting moments. Likened to Raymond E Feist's Magician Saga. 5 stars is not enough.

It is fast paced, well executed and with well written protagonists that resonated excellently.

The book also managed to have a more modern tone to it without loosing the old-world feel of the plot.

The 1st book was a little slow getting started, but thats just because you are in a new world and have to catch up. There were a lot of people and places to learn.

I loved the way that it picked up throughout the read.

Fast paced. Characters with flaws, but also heroic. Nice world building and consistent “rules of law/magic.”
