U.S. Marshal Shifters #5

Hellhound Marshal

Rate this book
He’s trapped in a nightmare. She’s a dream come true.

Logan Vega has been stuck as a hellhound so long that he’s almost forgotten how to be human. Some days, he can’t even remember his own name.

But then a new prisoner is locked in the cage next door. She’s more than the cure for his loneliness: she’s the bravest, kindest, toughest, and most radiant woman he’s ever met. And when their minds touch, it unlocks a shocking secret: she is his fated mate.

He stokes the flames inside her. What happens if they both get burned?

Rookie U.S. Marshal Iz Benoit has waited years for her badge. When she finally gets her first big case, she jumps at the chance to prove herself. But tracking a psychopathic dragon is a dangerous game—especially when it turns out he hoards magical creatures the way other dragons hoard gold. One wrong move, and Iz is part of his collection.
But it turns out that her missing half is in the cage next door. He's everything she's ever dreamed of: smart, handsome, funny, and brave.

He also believes he's too broken to be the mate she needs. All Logan wants to do is keep Iz safe, even if it means walking away from everything they mean to each other.

And breaking out might be the easy part, compared to healing a broken soul ...

Trigger warning

This book is as sweet and action-oriented as the rest of the series. I had a lot of trouble getting into it though, and it took me months to finish instead of a few hours.

Knowing a character was going to be captured and imprisoned was difficult for me. Claustrophobia is an issue for me. I was even triggered by a Duck Tales episode.

I look forward to the next book not taking place in a cave!

This is a good shifter romance, with a likable couple. I would have liked more backstory on both Iz and Logan, but especially on Logan. It gets 3.5 stars from me, rounded up to 4 stars.

Logan and Iz were both likable, and were really good together. Logan had been held prisoner, and forced to stay in his hellhound form for so long that he felt he was losing his humanity. When Iz was imprisoned with him, they were able to work together to escape. I liked that they were both US Marshals, and both shifters. Combining that with the fact that they were both held prisoner by the same evil man, they had a great deal in common.

One problem I have with all of Zoe Chant's series is that there is so long between books. Lots of times I have to go back and reread some of the earlier books in a series, simply because it has been so long that I don't remember all the characters. That is frustrating. I know Zoe Chant is actually a group of authors, and one person writes all the books in a series -- but I wish the books in a series could be published closer together.

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

Iz and Logan - all the swoons mixed in with all the danger

I love this series and was excited to see another US Marshall shifter team with more fated mates stories. Iz and Logan were the perfect pair to start. The story was well written and included witty dialogue, three dimensional characters who grow, and an engaging storyline with a bit of mystery and light danger mixed in with all the swoony love. Iz is a dragon shifter and a brand new US Marshall on a all shifter team. Logan is a Hellhound shifter that has been imprisoned and stuck in his shifter form. Iz first “real” case is trying to track down Sebastian, a dragon shifter, for illegal imprisonment and kidnapping. But nothing goes as expected and Iz finds herself trapped in her dragon form in a cell next to Logan. The book is fairly low angst and has a little bit of everything - sweet moments, a bit of steam, a small amount of dangerous action, strong friendships, fated mates, shifter magic, and painful pasts. Experiencing the journey of Iz and Logan as they endure captivity, try to escape, and work through their individual issues to get to their HEA gave me all the feels - you will definitely laugh, tear up, swoon, and happy sigh. All of the shifters Zoe Chant creates are loyal, upstanding, loving, all around good people who generally want to make the world a better place and Iz and Logan are no different. I am excited to read the stories of the rest of the new team. And I would mind a fluffalo or an air snake.

Newly minted Marshal Isabelle ‘Iz’ Benoit’s most qualified in the office to work her first solo assignment; Randolph Sebastian collects supernaturals is a dragon. Iz stumbled into cunning Sebastian’s territory and promptly found herself paralyzed and forced into her dragon. Sebastian wants Iz for his menagerie but he also wants something special with her. Iz refuses him and she’s forced into a shifter resistant cage in his cave lair.

Logan Vega’s hellhound’s almost feral he’s been captive over a year. Intrigued by Iz’s scent both sides of Logan struggle to find his deteriorating humanity and drags himself up enough to link with her telepathically. There’s easy camaraderie between the two as they help each other cope during their ‘dark’ time with Sebastian. Months later, Iz refuses to back down from Sebastian, the couple make a surprising discovery or two.

Freeing themselves from captivity, Iz and Logan recognize each other as mates but struggle past insecurity and loss of their humanity trying to reach the intimacy they shared. The months of captivity had eaten away at their confidence and mental stability. Within 24hours, Iz and Logan’s new found freedom is endangered when Sebastian puts a new plot in motion.

Fast and furious with some neat supporting characters

Iz has just started as a U.S. Marshal when she is tasked with finding and capturing rogue Dragon shifter Randolph. Unfortunately, Randolph gets the jump on her and adds her to his "hoard" of mythical beasts. There she meets spellbound Logan who has been there much longer. But together they are more than they are apart. Can they escape from his cages? If they do can they capture this evil Dragon who always seems to be one step ahead of them?

The pace is fast and the tone is uncertain yet hopeful with a character and action oriented storyline that has some steamy suggestions but no real details. The characters are vibrant and kickass. You can read this story on its own but you will get the most out of this series if you read them in order. There is a ton of action, some good character development and some really cool different mythical creatures! Enjoy!

Another fun instalment in the Marshal Shifters series, albeit a somewhat darker one compared to the first few.

Iz was just a teenager when we met her in the first instalment, so it's interesting to see the woman she's grown into - and I did enjoy the relationship development between her and Logan.

BUT. Holy communication breakdown, Batman: this instalment leans WAY more heavily for way longer than I'd like into the 'communications breakdowns that could be solved with five-minute honest conversations instead of assumptions about what the other person is thinking/feeling' trope.

Yes, I get it, they're both ragingly insecure, and it makes sense for them to be, given the plot. But as we've established in previous reviews: just because it makes sense doesn't meant that this is a trope where I enjoy hanging out with characters while they're navigating it. Hopefully in Keith's book, we'll get back to the characters who communicate like grown-ass adults...

Long awaited Iz story

It's been a while since I've read the other books in this series but this book brought it all back. Theo's cousin works with Gretchen's mate from the original books. There is crossover from previous books which just makes the characterization deeper. This book seems to be setting up a new subseries for new team mates. Plenty of adventure and as always mates who make each other stronger. Definitely a great read and worth the fight with Amazon to get it back online (because some bonehead has decided the author didn't own her own work)

I couldn’t remember the previous books and found this just too slow at times.
I also found the negativity by both Iz and Logan off-putting.
Their self doubting about their bond, being good enough for each other and being good marshals became depressing and I found it easy to put this down.
Really thought the villain Sebastian was just mean and creepy but not sinister. Just a typical nasty selfish piece of work.
Was glad her suffered poetic justice.

This is the 5th book of the marshals. This waa very interesting that the asshole thinking with his big ego instead of his brains!! Lol but in the end after he crossed the line who will win or will they loose everything even more? Hellhounds r from hell but this one is really unique 2 the cause. He may b down but he's not out yet. I loved how it was interesting and flowed really good. I love their little pack.

He'll bound Marshall

Randolph Sebastian is so greedy it's criminal. His hoard includes rare mystical creatures including Logan, A hellhound Marshall. Isabelle on her first big assignment is captured by him while hunting him. She and Logan mesh and learn they can enhance each other's powers and are able to free themselves and all the others. Lots of twists and turns they rescue Isabelle us mother from him and he ends up dead. I loved this story. Zoe Chant is the best.

An interesting read

I enjoyed the story. I found the book quite interesting. I liked how the mates found each other and how they made the other have more and better powers. The fun animals that stuck around were a great addition. I love the fluffalo shedding everywhere and the air snake being a bracelet. The ending was great. Love that he got himself in the end the evil dragon.

True justice

You have to love Elizabeth. She's not only a lady but also a very strong woman. Interesting how, as mates, the strengths of their dragon and hellhound compliment and strengthen each other. It was a very fitting end for the villian. The sea snake was a nice touch. Wonderful how he saved the day.

the series keeps getting better

I love the US Marshal Shifter series! The stories can be stand alones or read in order. The focus is on one couple but the outlying characters are from the other books and will keep you updated on their lives in an overview kind of way. I hope some of the new characters get their own spotlight.

Unfiltered!

Another exciting read in the U.S. Marshall Shifters’ series. Hellhound Marshal has heat, sweetness, family that we make ourselves, magic, action and yes! - the bad guy gets his! Entertaining read! One gap in the story - we don’t get to see how Iz’s wolfhounds react to the new menagerie???

Good book

Hi again. I really liked this book too. But I didn't like the depressing parts. I just skimmed those. Empathy isn't for that type of book. Your characters are always spot on, I have really been enjoying your books. I think this is my 17th book I've read by you. I really like your style. I see you.

Wonderful book

Logan was locked up for over a year. Iz is a newly Marshal and wanting a big case to prove her worth. Together they escaped from their prison and freed the other animals. Having a mate is like love at first sight. Iz was forced to shift to her dragon by the killer who captured her and Logan. On to #6

Brilliant Series

Hellhound Marshal (U.S. Marshal Shifters Book 5) by Zoe Chant. New Marshal Iz is given the job of brining in criminal dragon shifter Randolph. Unfortunately Randolph gets Iz first and she ends up in a prison cell. In the next cell is a Hellhound, Iz’s fated mate. Together they get out.

Complex shifter story

I thought this was a good addition to the series.
The mail need was so tortured. You felt bad for him, but together they made a good couple and were definitely, stronger.
However, the female lead was so insecure and doubting herself so much, it made me absolutely crazy.
But of course, you got your happily ever after.

Another Hit for Zoe.

Beginning to end action and romance. A different picture for the lore of who hellhounds are from most other stories, and quite creative. All makes for a solid afternoon reading experience. Even the air snake hero!

Iz and Logan
The characters that come off the pages and pulled me into their tale, a story that is well-written, with a strong plott, and great dialogue, with setting descriptions and action sequences are wonderfully vivid which brings this read together perfectly.

Totally worth the wait

This is the first US Marshall Shifters story which I have read, so all the hassle to find it was worthwhile. It is so very true. When you find the right one, the sum of you is greater than on your own.
