The Saint and the First-Time Sinner

Rate this book
Gay natural caregiver meets arrogant first-time gay.

My job isn’t easy but taking care of sick people in the comfort of their own homes is so worthwhile. I like to think I’m professional and know I’m good at what I do, regardless of the circumstances, the patient, or even their families. Maybe it’s because I’ve known loss in my own life, or maybe I was just made for the job. Either way, I love what I do.

However, everything I thought I knew about myself is going to get sorely tested with this new assignment. The patient is a battle axe, and she’s the type to take that as a compliment. If it were just her, there wouldn’t be a problem. I’ve dealt with spirited, hardheaded, pain-in-the-ass patients before.

No, the problem is her son, Shane.

I don’t know what it is about him. I know he’s exactly my type, but he also has a way of getting under my skin, and worse, helikes getting under my skin. The funny thing is he’s supposed to be straight, but the more I keep “running into” him, the more I’m beginning to question that. Which is dangerous because I find myself wanting him to get under my skin. All my personal rules and boundaries are getting tested, and all for some rich, spoiled brat with a gorgeous smile and something vulnerable in his bright eyes.

Basically, I’m in trouble.

***

How long can Kevin ignore Shane’s attention? If he gives in, what will he have to give up? Find out in this first-time gay, opposites attract romance with plenty of witty banter, a bit of snark, and, of course, a HEA.

Oh boy 😕

Kiedy daje się przekonać, że to on powinien zrobić, bo to on zawalił.

Kevin is a caregiver for Sophia Perkins. Her son, Shane, is an asshole. Shane proves this by sexually harassing Kevin continually while Kevin is working.

Kevin has a strict policy about not mixing work and pleasure. Obviously, this doesn't apply when it's about Shane, because he's such a ginormous twatwaffle that he's irresistible. Or something. Anyway, even after having sex with Shane, he still has the gall to decline a date with he cleaner, because he apparently doesn't mix his professional and personal life.

Kevin still hates Shane at this point, and Shane is still a massive asshole. I didn't feel any kind of connection between them, and Kevin has to learn to grow a backbone. Yes, he talks back to Sophia (which is great, by the way), but his inability to resist Shane or even report him for sexual harassment is honestly pathetic for a man like Kevin, who has such a strong personality.

Sexual harassment is not romance.

Kevin and Shane . . .

Kevin absolutely loves his job doing home care nursing for those who need his help. They are more comfortable in their own home, and he is good at his job and makes that possible. When he gets a difficult patient, Sophia Perkins, who thrives on giving him a hard time, that isn’t even the worst part. Her son, Shane, is an entitled, spoiled brat who seems to thrive on annoying Kevin. And somehow Kevin likewise feels an attraction for the annoying man.

It doesn’t help matters that Shane happens to be the type of guy Kevin is drawn to. Shane is allegedly straight, but repeated encounters with him makes Kevin have a few doubts. He doesn’t want to end up losing this job. But how long does he want to keep dealing with Shane? Shane is admittedly playing some kind of game, but will he get serious and show Kevin another side? Will Kevin break his rules about personal relationships with those he works for? Or is it all a game to Shane?

There is so much I enjoyed about this story line. The banter was delightful. And Sophia’s no-nonsense approach to things compared to her son’s game-playing was an interesting juxtaposition. And Kevin seemed able to become close to both of them. Grab your copy and see how it all works out for them.

What an amazing story from this new to me author. Both main characters were so complex, yet so well fleshed out. Sophia was a delight with her prickly ways. Spicy and sensual in parts, the conversations between Kevin and Shane were superb! Loved it.

I enjoyed The Saint and the First-Time Sinner a whole lot. Two imperfect men who don't seem to fit are drawn together and have to do a whole lot of work to make it a happy ever after.

Kevin was a bundle of mixed-up energy, he could be caring, strong and determined, but he could be quick to anger, his job was a calling rather than a task and he had what he called a good moral compass until that is he meets Shane, the son of his newest client and loses all his senses when he is around him.

Shane was on the surface a rich, entitled playboy who liked to play games, especially where Kevin was concerned and he wasn't always likeable but there was a lot more to him once he allowed people to see deeper.

These two had tons of chemistry and despite Kevin's intentions not to break his own rules, Shane manages to goad him into reacting to him and ultimately giving in to temptation. But they have a lot to work through, communication, and trust, Shane especially needed to look at himself and make some changes, and Kevin wasn't afraid to tell him his faults. I liked it when Shane let his guard down and allowed himself to be real and vulnerable with Kevin when he let himself show affection for him rather than pretending to play his games.

Shane's mother, Sophia was a dragon of a woman, she ruled her empire and woe anyone who did something she didn't like or approve of, especially Shane. Kevin wasn't afraid to tell her a few home truths either, especially when it came to her need to slow down and look after her health. It would be a hard thing for anyone to look their immortality in the eye, but especially a woman as in control as Sophia. Kevin and Sophia forge a lovely bond despite her prickliness.

I really hope these two continue to communicate and work together to make their relationship last.

Finally, Kevin takes centre stage

After seeing the lovely Kevin in each of the first three books, I was so happy that he was getting his own book. What we saw of him made me eager to find out what sort of man would be good enough for him, but I never expected Shane.
Kevin and Shane both wore masks, with Kevin's troubled childhood still lurking behind the calm and competent caregiver and Shane's rich kid entitlement front and centre. At each other's throats from the beginning, there was so much potential for sparks but Shane was straight, even though he was exactly Kevin's type.
The conversations, banter, sniping, between them propelled them towards understanding and an appreciation of each other, leading to a thawing and then heat. Their almost anti-romance is set against the backdrop of Kevin caring for Shane's mother, the wonderfully autocratic Sophia who I loved immediately, while Shane struggles to come to terms with his mother's mortality.
I loved every minute of this book, from watching Kevin and Shane dance around each other, seeing Sheila yet again and her conversations with Kevin, and how Kevin and Sophia come to a mutual respect and a definitely not spoken fondness too.
Each book in the Cresson Point series has captivated me and it is completely impossible to pick a favourite couple, which is unusual to say the least. I can honestly say this is a series that will stay with me and I will definitely be re-reading it, which is also unusual.

Very slow start. In fact, most of the first chapter could have been scrapped and that would not have affected the story line.

After that boring first chapter, the rest of the book was pretty good. It was a slow burn and it took for the MC's to get it together, although there was an instant attraction. The book was well-written and interesting to read. I enjoyed reading the MC's getting to know each other and boy that Sophia was a spitfire! It takes awhile for both stubborn men to get over themselves, but they finally get a HEA. I have read several books from this author, and this book was not the best by far, but still worth the read.

I grew very fond of Kevin. He's a very good person as he showed in his cameos in the previous books.
He's a helper, a saviour.

The way his background story shaped his personality is interesting. He lost his mum and grandmother, moved in with a foster family. He seems to have taken his loss, grief, trauma and transformed it into a positive energy. He became a personal carer, supposingly keeping losing people he care about to terminal illnesses, but that's who he is.

Shane is an enigmatic person. I would have liked to understand more of him. He shows a cocky image of himself but inside he's vulnerable, scared, afraid to be lonely. Kevin, being Kevin, manages to see that.

I also liked Shane's mum Sophia, she plays an important role. She is not easy. But I liked that through her we learned a lot about Kevin's ability to read people, care and strength.

I loved Kevin and Shane's development and their moments together and I think Kevin is perfect for Shane. I only wish we had a few more chapters in the end to show more of how Shane takes care of Kevin's too, more of his romantic gestures.

I love this series with all my heart and I will keep rereading it many times. It has been therapeutic, and a very emotional journey.

A gay, natural caregiver meets an arrogant "first-time gay" man. "My job isn’t easy, but taking care of sick people in the comfort of their own homes is so worthwhile. The patient is a "battle axe", and she’s the type to take that as a compliment. If it were just her, there wouldn’t be a problem. I’ve dealt with spirited, hardheaded, "pain-in-the-ass" patients before. No, the problem is her son, Shane. Basically, I’m in trouble".
I really did enjoy this story...but then, I love everything that Romeo Alexander puts on paper...so maybe I'm a bit prejudice??? Nope...I don't think so! This story features two, what could really be called "imperfect" men. They don't seem to "fit"...but none the less, they are drawn to one another and have to do a lot of work if they hope to make a "happy ever after".

Kevin was a mixed-up bundle of energy. He could be caring, strong and determined when it suited him... but he could also, in the blink of an eye, be quick to anger. His job was a work of pleasure...a "true calling" and never did he ever once consider it to be a "task". He processed a great "moral compass"...well, that is until he met Shane, the son of his newest client/patient, and loses all his "good common-sense" whenever he's around him.

Shane...I didn't ever really like him.... but I don't think we were supposed to. He was a rich, entitled playboy who totally enjoyed playing "games", especially when they concerned Kevin. As I said, he just wasn't likeable. I did learn later in the story, that there was a lot more to him once he actually let people see deeper into his character.

These two men had a "boatload" of chemistry. Despite Kevin's intentions not to break his own rules, Shane goads him into nearly always reacting and finally just giving in. I thought that they were the most unlikely couple that any author had ever written and then thrown together. To say that these two had a lot to work through...communication, and trust, would have been an understatement. Shane certainly needed to look at himself and make some changes, and believe me, Kevin wasn't afraid to tell him about ALLhis faults. I liked seeing Shane let his guard down and allow himself to be "real" as well as vulnerable with Kevin. To let himself show real affection rather than pretending to play his silly, mostly obnoxious, games.

Shane's mother, Sophia was a "dragon" of a woman. She might have been sick, but she ruled her empire with an iron hand, and "Heaven help" anyone who did something she didn't like or approve of...especially Shane. Kevin was never afraid to tell her how things should, and would, be, either, especially when it came to her need to slow down and take better care of her health. I believe that it would be the hardest thing imaginable for someone to have to look their own "immortality" in the eye... especially a woman as in control of everything and everyone as Sophia was and always had been.

Kevin and Sophia forged a perfectly lovely bond despite her prickly nature. I thought many times that Kevin should have been a candidate nominated for sainthood.

Overall, it was a good story, but then I would expect nothing else from this author....my fellow Michigander:) I really wanted to give it the same 5 stars that all my other books by him received, but I just couldn't work up that 5-star "feeling" for the "Shane" character...Kevin deserved more than that...so 4.5.

Could these two really be happy together??
To look after people who are extremely sick can be very rewarding but also on the other hand very stressful and it can break your heart if/ when you lose them. And that’s what Kevin was going through he had lost a patient that was extremely important to him and people around him wasn’t sure he was coping. After talking to his adoptive mother he decides taking on another long term case would be good for him. And this is where he meets Sophia. Who is So set in her Ways, she’s sassy and she will take no-nonsense. But it’s not just her that Kevin has got to keep an eye on because her son Shane could become an issue.
Shane is a rich, spoiled man who likes to play with peoples feelings well Kevin that’s for sure. These two just are electric it’s like lightning just striking.
There is something extremely exciting about this story. And I’ve got to admit I totally fell for Sophia I do like a sassy older lady who knows what she wants and she doesn’t mind putting you in your place to get it.
You will not be disappointed in this book it just has a little bit of everything that keeps you hooked turn in those pages until you look at the clock and it’s halfway through the night. It’s just fantastic I cannot wait for Romeo’s next book.

Romeo is one of my favorite LGBTQ+ writers and I'm always excited when a new book of his is published. I was able to get an ARC and felt giddy to start it! But... for the first time, I struggled to read Kevin and Shane's story. I encourage others to read his books, including this one, but *I* just wasn't as invested in one half of the couple as I usually am.

The book is written third person POV (Kevin's) and I felt that I couldn't 'get into Shane' at all. I didn't find him as likeable as other previous partners. Kevin was introduced in a prior novel and I found him so interesting then and hoped to see him in future books. It made me happy to see him in his own book. Shane is just a non-interesting person. Yes, he's fun, smart, engaging, but maybe it was just my personal bias, I didn't think he was worthy of Kevin.

As you can tell, I am invested in my reading because I couldn't 'like' one of them lol.

On the plus side, the writing was, as always, ABSOLUTELY wonderful, descriptive and accurate as far as Kevin's profession of home care nurse. I liked the character of Sophia, Shane's mother and Kevin's patient.

Loved it!

I cannot find better words to express how I felt with this book. My grandma passed of pancreatic cancer last year and as a fan of the escapism of fantasy I honestly was expecting not to like this but boy was I wrong. I loved the characters and Sophia (oh sorry Miss Perkins) reminded me so much of my grandma it was bittersweet. The relationships and the banter just made me feel so warm and it’s so hard to get that mix of seriousness with a chuckle I really commend the author.

I will admit I wasn’t a fan of how the couple had the miscommunication and the arguments were sometimes a little on the nose but I think that speaks to the characters themselves - they are flawed and you want them to be ok with themselves and each other!

There is spice but not as much later on as it focuses on the feeling sand depths of the characters which was a nice touch as it mirrored the relationship between the two main heroes (they are heroes to me) although it would have been nice to see a bit more in the epilogue - so maybe we can look forward to a short sometime soon??

I will leave with this - if you want a quick, heartfelt tale about a carer burrowing into the hearts of a sick woman and her son then please read this book!

I really enjoyed the premise of this story. A palliative care nurse who was assigned to a wealthy headstrong woman. The job also comes with her son, an obnoxious, straight playboy. And boy, Shane is truly obnoxious, in a way only rich kids can be. I questioned for a moment if I would end up liking him….but I shouldn’t have doubted that I would come around, and appreciate him in the end.

Kevin was a great pragmatic optimist who chose a career that isn’t easy, especially given the loss he’s had to endure over the years. But I liked that he was also a little hot-headed, and is excellent at speaking his mind.

What was great about this story is that even though they got a lovely Happy Ever After, it still felt real, personality traits weren’t magically better, they were constantly learning how to communicate and be there for each other. I love that.

This was the first book by Romeo Alexander that I had the pleasure of reading! I’m glad I did!!! I absolutely loved his writing style! I was definitely impressed with how the bantering between the 2 MCs and the 2 supporting MCs! The conversations between them were very witty and made sense to me! I think it would make for a great gay Hallmarkesque TV movie!!!!

The story focuses on Kevin, a caregiver for an agency that provides nursing services to the elderly. He was sent to provide services to Sophia, a very wealthy lady who was battling cancer. When he got there, it was Shane, the youngest son of Sophia who answered the door in sweaty gym attire. Sophia wanted a male nurse because the last couple nurses were women and she wanted her “womanizing” son to stay away from them. However, the last nurse before Kevin had stolen some stuff from Sophia so that was her ultimatum. From there, there were the bantering between Sophia and Kevin and between Kevin and Shane. That’s where I’m going to stop and have you pick up the book to read to find out what the bantering were and whether Sophia was happy with Kevin’s services or not.

Found Lacking

Unfortunately this book also included errors that could have been rectified with a proof reader, in book 2 when Kevin speaks with the main character Robin he states how his mother was an addict and didn't get clean until he was in his teens and then in this book says his parents died when he was eight. There's just errors and mistakes throughout this series, as if the writer got confused and forgotten what he's written as he's just trying to pump the books out. I enjoyed Hero's of Port Dale, Men of Fairlake and Men of Fort Dale but this series Cresson Point has had loads of inconsistencies and felt like bits of the other books/storylines from his other works smashed together. I did not warm to Shane at all, he seemed to have no redeeming qualities and considering there was a lot of focus on him being straight when he did sleep with Kevin nothing much was said. Didn't believe their relationship, it was rather lacklustre as a whole. I will read more of Romeo's work as I have enjoyed his other books as stated above but if I read this series first I wouldn't have bothered.

Kevin’s job as a caregiver takes him into the home of a wealthy woman with cancer and her son. The son, Shane, is always watching Kevin, and mentions a “game” during one of their short conversations. Kevin isn’t sure what Shane’s motivation is nor what the game is Shane is playing when Shane tells Kevin he is special, and he knows he is a man of principal and stubborn. Shane has been leading a pretty hedonistic life, and tells Kevin the only thing he hasn’t done is been with another man. Kevin is gay and is attracted to Shane, but has a firm policy against getting involved with anyone where he works. Much of the story is about the interaction between the two, Kevin trying to decipher Shane’s game—is Shane attracted to Kevin, want to experiment, what? Shane wants a purpose in life, but how does Kevin fit in? Trying to figure out Shane’s motivation and the meaning behind his interactions with Kevin kept me reading and developing theories up to the last couple of chapters. I enjoyed the character development of both Kevin and Shane, the banter between them, and the quest for something more by both men. I will read the other 3 books in this series.

Good lesson in Grace. Kevin is a natural nurterer. His job as a caregiver for the infirm, give him the satisfaction of caring for people that are at their lowest points in life. Miss Sophia Perkins, is Kevin's newest client. Shane is her youngest son, who feels the need to taunt tease and infuriate Kevin. Kevin, is trying to stay professional and is constantly challenged by Shane. When not attending Miss Sophia, Kevin tries to figure out Shane's motivations. Kevin is attracted to Shane who is his ideal, but he has a policy to not get involved with clients' relatives. Kevin wonders if. shane is really into him, curious or just idling his time. Nice story. You grow to love Miss Sophia. The author handles the care giver profession and the client patients with great sensitivity, practicality, respect and humor. Good story. Will shane come clean and be honest? Will Kevin let himself welcome Shane? Nicely done. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Kevin is a compelling character— he’s an interesting mix of idealism, pragmatism, candor, and, at least where it comes to Shane, much more tolerance for awful behavior than anyone might reasonably (or arguably *should* reasonably) expect. For most of this book, I wouldn’t have had many flattering things to say about Shane, and tbh, while he does redeem himself somewhat over the course of the story, he starts out as such an ur-spoiled rich brat (in ways that are obnoxious, boundary-pushing, and not at all charming) that there’s a part of me that still doesn’t completely trust his evolution as a character. I will say that both of their personalities do come to life vividly on the page, as does Sophia, Shane’s mother and Kevin’s employer. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

Moving, tender and intense
It is an excellent romance, the narrative of which does not make it so easy to define who is the saint and who is the sinner.
I really liked the characters who are complex, in an atmosphere that initially arises in a world of death with the character of Kevin who works in patient's home to provide palliative care. Evolving this story into a romance was a challenge. I found this challenge to be very successful because the relationship between Kevin and Shane, the son of the woman he is caring for, is as complex as they are. Shane's character is murky where Kevin's accepts himself. Kevin is emotional when Shane is annoying, then deeper afterwards.
The story is intense, twisted by Shane's behavior, moving by the context and the wounds that this context creates.

Such a great story. Kevin is a caretaker who finally takes on a long term patient. This new patient happens to be Sophia Perkins, the matriarch of a highly wealthy family that founded the small town. She’s blunt, unapologetic, and absolutely awesome. Sophia lives with her youngest child, Shane.

Shane is spoiled, entitled, handsome straight, and enjoys making everyone uncomfortable for his own entertainment.

I loved the banter between Kevin and Shane. The verbal sparring was witty and hilarious. The way Shane’s character reacts to his attraction to Kevin we well written. He sort of goes along with it, but admits it scared him a bit.

Once Shane and Kevin communicate better, they receive a well deserved HEA.

This was an interesting read. I was intrigued by the storyline and love Romeo Alexander's work, so anything he writes is a must-read for me. Kevin is a caregiver. The premise of the book said his new patient is a battleaxe. That's the perfect word for her! Sophia is sharp and in control. She'll keep you on your toes, that's for sure! (I probably would have been completely intimidated!) Overall I really liked her- a lot sooner that I thought I would (or if I would). Her son Shane, though, was obnoxious. It took I long time for me to warm up to him- a very long time, and it's still tepid. Still and enjoyable read. Looking forward to this author's next book. 4 stars.

Shane and Kevin found themselves when Kevin was taking care of Shane’s mother when she had cancer. After a great New Year’s Eve Shane decided that they were finished he had no feelings for Kevin, Kevin convinced him that his mother needed him so he spent time with her. She got better and decided to get Shane to admit that he had feelings for Kevin so they talked it out and it was good. Good book as usual!.

Kevin and Shane’s relationship is tumultuous at the start. As a caregiver for Shane’s mom, Kevin tries to keep a strict policy of not dating anyone related to his patients. It’s a line that he has never crossed. Shane knows what he wants and sets out to get it. And what he wants is Kevin. But Kevin is adamant about keeping his distance. As they get to know each other more, Kevin starts to see a side to Shane that he never knew. He is slowly falling for a man he swore he never would. Can Kevin and Shane find a way to meet in the middle so both can be happy?

Kevin is a caregiver. His latest charge is a refined woman with cancer. Sofia has a son Shane who tends to stay in the background till he meets Kevin. I'm not going to say sparks fly because they don't. Shane and Kevin don't intially start off on good footing until their banter turns into an everyday casual way of talking to each other. A well written getting to know you book, with some light banter & andst that leads to a happily ever after. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

The Cresson Point books always have a point of a person or persons coming into their own through tragedy of some kind.

This book is no different.

This one is the story of Kevin, a caregiver/nurse who is given the responsibility to take care of one of the rich woman in town and her very rigid ways.

He does a great job, but ends up way too attracted to the straight son, Shane.

Not so straight (old story trope) things happen that are good, then not, then they find their way all while dealing with angry, afraid mother, and her just as afraid son.

The dialogue between the characters was great. Back and forth, respect and hostility, fueled this story in the best way. It was very easy to read while being extremely enjoyable, too. Good characters and strong writing kept you reading, while the storyline and the HEA engaged you. Entertaining and fun to read.

Kevin is a professional with a challenging patient who has a son who does not understand that Kevin does not mix business with pleasure. Usually. But Shane is determined to get to Kevin despite the fact that he is supposed to be straight. These two strong willed men who are both at the mercy of their attraction to one another and dealing with Sophia, the patient who is anything but patient and compliant.

Kevin finds his man at the job instead of the bar. Shane is not surprised to find himself falling for a man. He thinks it's not about gender so Kevin swoops in and teaches him what he thinks he is missing. He takes care of mother and son and finds his life changes forever for the better! Great book and nice ending to the series.
