A wealthy oligarch, a failing business and a man who sacrificed everything for one final shot at freedom.
When Danny accepts a job from wealthy Conrad Szekely to spy on his business partner, Jerry, he finds himself with a world of trouble. Within days of Danny’s arrival, the business is destroyed in a catastrophic fire, which also claims Jerry’s life.
Torn between conflicting interests, Danny starts to suspect that Jerry’s business had been anything but straightforward, and finds himself trapped in a spiral of treachery and lies, which rapidly begins to degenerate into a cat and mouse chase across the fens.
With former allies turning violently against him, Danny tries to solve the mystery that surrounds Jerry’s death. But can Danny find the answers when those answers themselves prove lethal?
A deliciously dark thriller. I thoroughly enjoyed the writing. Jones is a master at entertaining voice and edge-of-your-seat suspense. His style drew me in first and foremost but then I was fully invested once the mystery crept up. I had to know what happened. Great read.
A thriller by an author who is as great a writer as he must be a surgeon! This arrived through my door, and I couldn't wait to start reading. I love a book with a great blurb when I have no expectations. I just go with the flow. Well, this book flowed so well that I didn't put it down for an hour. I did only mean to read one chapter.
From the moment of Danny bumping into his old school friend, Katy, his life will never be the same. He gets embroiled in things he couldn't have imagined. Matthew Jones has written a thriller that has all the ingredients needed to create a fabulous read.
His characters make you feel like you could know them, well developed and all with their own unique voice and part to play in the story. The detailed descriptions of the settings transported me to wherever the story was playing out in my head. So cleverly written, and when all put together, they create a truly immersive reading experience.
The short chapters reminded me of a James Patterson book. Where you can't put the book down until you see what's going to happen next. I loved the amount of suspense that just flowed all the way. I was curious from the beginning, and that didn't abate at all!
It's such an atmospheric read, too. I almost inhaled this book as I turned the pages, and the story just flew by. Before I knew it, I was on the final chapter. Dancing With The Devil is a fast-paced, complex, multi-layered thriller. One that I highly recommend to any thriller reader. Thanks to Rachel's Random Resources and the author for the gifted copy of the book so I could write a honest review.
Offered a job as an engineer at a boat yard, Danny realises he’s being asked to spy on the workers by the firm’s wealthy business partner, Conrad Szekely. But things get off to a bad start and Danny finds himself an unpopular and unwanted addition to a failing business. When a fire rages through the premises, killing the owner, Danny is caught in the middle, not knowing who to trust. As he struggles to unravel the mystery of his employment and what he might be expected to do for his money, he is forced to return to the isolated boarding school that continues to haunt him…
This book starts off sounding like a ghost story, and to be sure, there are a few spooky moments. Mainly, though, it’s a murder mystery with an amateur sleuth thrown in at the deep end, flailing about trying to untangle an increasingly complicated web of lies and deceit. The plot is a complex one and with a pace that varies (almost coming to a stop when Rebecca makes an appearance), and dialogue that is a bit repetitive, I often wasn’t sure what was going on. However, the latter section is good fun, with lots of car chases, guns, explosions and double-crossing villains.
A bit long-winded in places, but generally a jolly good romp.
Danny and Katie, classmates from boarding school, ran into each other by chance one day and the thriller begins. He is offered a job at a failing boat yard and realizes the company’s wealthy business partner really wants him to spy on the workers and the workers view him with suspicion. A fire breaks out at the boat yard killing the owner. Danny doesn’t know who to trust and struggles to understand the real reason he was hired.
This book is a murder mystery with a novice trying to untangle an increasingly complicated web of lies and deceit. The plot is a complex. The writing is well done with detailed description that enable the reader to easily envision themselves present observing each twist and turn.
Today is my stop on Dancing with the devil blog tour. Danny and Katie, colleagues from school, met by chance one morning and that moment changed everything. Pandora's box was open!! With small chapters, clever writing and all elements of suspense present during the narrative, I really appreciate all the detailed descriptions written by the author that helped immensely to understand, imagine and feel the atmosphere of each scene. This Thriller was a very pleasant surprise! Thank you so much to Matthew Jones and @rachelrandomresources for a paperback of this book.
I wasn't sure about this book at first, then by the middle of the 1st chapter I found it hard to put down. In fact I was reading well into the night. I hope there is a follow up to this book as will be clear to others at the end, I need to know! Apparently this is this author's first novel. I sincerely hope it's not his last. C Love.
Ok. I confess. The author is a friend and relative, so I'm not an impartial judge. However, since it's release this book has been averaging five stars on Amazon Unlimited, so I'm not the only one who likes it!
I enjoyed Dancing With the Devil, it is a fast moving and engaging story with relatable characters. Most importantly it satisfies the essential requirement of a thriller, you HAVE to know what happens next and there are enough plot twists and turns to keep you guessing what that might be.
A fantastic read. Captivating, thrilling and full of twists. The antagonists are dark and shady, the protagonists are underprepared for their challenges and the combination causes an edge of the seat ride through rural Lincolnshire.
Such a fast-paced thriller I haven't got my breath back yet. The twists were constant and i never knew what was happening and the ending blew my mind, This was such a great book and im desperate for a sequel. @matthewjones @irishbookish
My Thoughts: this one took me a while to work out what was going on, it started off very slow paced.
But once it gets going, the action doesn’t stop, it’s fast paced & exciting with a whole host of unreliable characters that provided us with twists and turns galore to keep us guessing and ensuring we kept turning the pages.
The story had hints of supernatural which added an element that you don’t often see in a thriller.
I’ll be honest and say this isn’t a book I would’ve picked up on my own, but it’s one that’s definitely worth the read.
