And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead. A History Of Odran Yates enters Clonliffe Seminary in 1972 after his mother informs him that he has a vocation to the priesthood He goes in full of ambition and hope dedicated to his studies and keen to make friends Forty years later Odrans devotion has been challenged by the revelations that have shattered the Irish peoples faith in the church He has seen friends stand trial colleagues jailed the lives of young parishioners destroyed and has become nervous of venturing out in public for fear of disapproving stares and insulting remarks. A Ladder to the A Maurice Swift is handsome, charming, and hungry for fame. The one thing he doesn’t have is talent—but he’s not about to let a detail like that stand in his way. After all, a would-be writer can find stories anywhere. They don’t need to be his own. Working as a waiter in a West Berlin hotel in 1988, Maurice engineers the perfect a chance encounter with celebrated novelist Erich Ackermann.

I'm probably in an absolute minority with my rating as I've read very few negative reviews. First apparently it is not well researched in the political and religious history of Ireland..something I can't debate upon as I'm lacking in knowledge about this subject in Ireland.
The most important part for me is the reading. I've never read a book with so many expletives in the first 50%...one just doesn't go around talking like that every other line...it got so tedious I nearly dropped the book.
Secondly...it just didn't reach the 'heart'...the main character I found simple to the point of stupid and the only one I really connected with was Maud Avery.
The writing construcción was monotonous and repetitive on a delicate subject..sometimes to the point of vulgarity. A good description of the so called humour would be corny...blasé...and bland.
I finished it and found the ending laughable.
This book has been referred to as a 'masterpiece'..but I much preferred
A Place Called Winter-Patrick Gale Fingersmith-Sarah Waters Come To The Lighthouse Virginia Woolf Trespass-Rose Tremain
All in the same genre and all 5 stars IMHO.
A book has to be well researched...well written ...feasible and capture me to the soul...this one didn't.
We follow Cyril and his life as a homosexual in Ireland back when it was illegal. The thoughts and feelings of his unrequited love for Julian, the struggles with his identity of being an adoptive son and having his adoptive parents blatantly disengage with him, and finally the memories of people who have come and gone in his life. I thought it was well written, and witty at times. The leaving Alice at the church joke got a bit repetitive but I guess that was a defining moment of his life when he finally broke free.
Unfortunately didn't draw me in enough to move my heart but still an enjoyable read with likeable characters.
I struggled to get into the book, but eventually it was hard for me to put down! I enjoy a long book as you really get to know the characters & this didn’t disappoint. Great characters, great story of perseverance and loss. So much tragedy but the wit kept the book from feeling too heavy (but it was heavy). Only one item about Julian eluded to but buttoned up left me guessing.
A Heart's Invisible Furies is one of my favorite reads of 2024. The story is not only captivating and heart felt but the character development throughout the book is absolutely amazing. Anytime I pick up the book and read the last few pages, I begin to tear up. A must read!
This book stood the test of time, just as good as the first time I read it. Cyril's story of growing up adopted and gay in Ireland in the 1960's will break your heart, and Boyne's classic Irish dialog will leave you laughing despite yourself. Excellent Book!
