I love short stories. I love the characters in these stories. Maratse is seemingly simple in an increasingly complex world. I appreciate that so much. He’s also done what many have a hard time doing, which is to adapt his profession to the world he inhabits in order to try and make it work for everyone. There are costs for him in this equation (mostly his time) but it seems to balance out. I love this. He’s dedicated to his community in so many ways. As I read more stories with Maratse as a character, I wonder more and more about his backstory. I’ll keep reading and hope to stumble upon it.

I like the way Christoffer writes, it reminds me of Jack London's books. Even though this was a short story you got the feeling that the man who was the writer was a misfit and had things not go his way. Maratse was a man of few words but said them with feeling. The Katabatic winds played a part in what was said or not said in finding Aqqalunnguaq, the writers mistakes gives us an unusual ending that fit with the old timers of Iceland. This story can be read in an hour, it's interesting to follow the writer throughout the story.

As someone unfamiliar with Greenland and their practices this book was hard to understand in some parts. Mostly the words or terms used in their cultures. I enjoyed the journey that I was taken on while reading. It was interesting and terrifying. I don't believe that I would ever be able to survive such a journey.

That being said. I enjoy this authors dedication to the people of Greenland. To the culture traditions that they hope to rid themselves of. It is a new world. Mistakes happen. Some worse than others.

As someone who has attempted myself, it saddens me to learn of their cultural practices of retreating in shame often to end their life. It does not have to be that way anymore. Times have changed. Their dangers have not. Snow, Ice, Polar bears and countless other things are problems they have to deal with. Outdated practices should be retired. The struggle to survive is hard enough. It saddens me to think that they do not have the care available to them. I know I wouldn't be where I am today without mine. I hope one day soon they receive it

Tragic Thought Provoking

Katabatic, is as it was designed to be, thought provoking. It is a story that will inspire discussion.
Katabatic, is a short story that is fast paced, eventful and keeps you guessing. It packs a lot into just a few pages. After reading this I am sure that I will spend many hours in deep thought and many more sharing those thoughts and recommending this tale.

This book is different from others I have read by this author. It is told from the viewpoint of a reporter who is an outsider in Greenland. The book gives us some insight into the detective featured in other books by the author and shows a stark contrast between the thoughts of those who grow up in urban comfort and those who struggle to survive in a harsh environment.

If you like works by this author, you will enjoy this short book.

3.5.

This was a whole novel crammed into 70 pages and I wish Petersen had given himself more pages to work with. It is an interesting novella because I learned about a culture that I knew nothing about.

I got this novella free during a free Kindle book event.

The author has a hands on knowledge of Greenland, the people, and the culture. His Arctic Shorts are wonderfully graphic, gritty, and enjoyable.

Even in this short book the author can create a real sense of the loneliness, isolation and desolation of much of Greenland. This is matched with a good story line.
