Let go of your past... or it will be the death of you...

When a man's body is discovered crammed into the boot of an abandoned car in a remote location, DI Tom Janssen and his team must unpick his life to find out how he came to be there.

The victim was a local man, popular with some although hated by others, and he had a habit of making enemies, enemies that any sane man would seek to avoid. For once, the team do not struggle to find a suspect or a motive for his murder, but with several to choose from, how can they determine who delivered the killing blows? Those who despised the man are unrepentant and as the investigation develops there seems to be more going on than a simple act of vengeance. What did the deceased have to hide and who was so intent on keeping their own secrets that they were prepared to brutally kill to do so?

With a killer at large the public are restless, reassured only by the suggestion that the murder is an act perpetrated by figures within the criminal community against one of their own, but when a troubled teenage girl disappears fear takes hold in the small coastal town. The only potential witness is an eccentric homeless man who comes and goes as he pleases, often disappearing for months at a time. Who did he see? What does he know? Will he be the next to be silenced?

What looked like a simple revenge attack will turn into a race against time for Tom and his team as they try to protect the innocent and reveal the guilty... only no one knows with any certainty who belongs in which camp.

Jason Dalgliesh was born on the south coast of England and grew up in Hampshire, UK. He has worked in the power transmission industry, the retail sector, call centres and as a night-owl in a bakery. His greatest challenge of all is ongoing, as a stay at home parent.

He is presently writing the Dark Yorkshire crime-series, featuring DI Nathaniel Caslin.

The novels are set in Yorkshire, England. The medieval City of York is Caslin's home town and the plot lines take in some of the UK's most rugged and beautiful landscapes, from the windswept North Sea coastline and across the stunning North York Moors.

Penned in the style of the Crime Noir genre, Caslin is a deep character, as flawed as he is brilliant, battling his own demons as much as those he is pitted against. Readers who enjoy gritty, atmospheric thrillers will find the series a must read.

Having spent time abroad, Jason has lived and worked in various parts of England as well as the Scottish Highlands. He currently resides in the East Riding, with his wife and two young children.

Read late into the night. Page turner.

13th book in the series and still makes me sit and read It late into the night. The characters are well developed and have a real depth and understanding of each other. Over the series we have got to know their work and family life balance and trials and tribulations of both.

The crimes committed are diverse and being in rural Norfolk all the more difficult to manage with a small team and the higher powers that be want policing centralised.

The story also makes you pause and think what may be going on right under your nose and neighbourhood with out realising. As well as how we judge others from appearance and the way they live. Never pausing to think for the Grace of god...

The procedural police work is well handled and paced showing the difficulty of piecing it all together. Just the right thread end needs pulled and things start to unravel and fall into place.

Running through with the crime and police work is how it affects the friends and family of the officers working the case. Long hours on there own with loved ones even at home switched off and totally immersed in work. Missing family events, plans changing at the last moment as well as wondering if they will be home safe that night?

The book also touches on mental health issues, grooming and rough sleepers. Handled with care, foresight and understanding not just a throw away line here or there.

Recommend this series that needs read in sequence to others that like police procedural with crimes committed but not over dramatized. Characters with depth, humour and flaws s but a strong small team that has each other's back.
As well as wonderful descriptions of rural Norfolk and North Norfolk coast line and surrounding area.

If you like Ellie Griffiths, David Blake or Joy Ellis give this series a try.

Into the next one.

We hear lots more about the officers' private lives and their interactions with each other in this volume. It almost seems as if the plot is secondary. A man has been stabbed to death at an out of the way location and in a particularly gruesome manner. It appears at the outset to be the work of more than one person. The solution to the crime has many holes in the logic and is thus not very satisfactory. Suffice it to say that this not the author's best work, although I continue to enjoy the subplots which deal with the detectives' various domestic issues.

A story of child grooming, drug deals & of course murder. That as always tells only part of the tale when you read a J.M. Dalgleish story. The character's are the main story & the manner in which the author has built these personalities throughout the DI Tom Jenssen series is exceptional.
Whilst all the books hold their own as stand alone investigations, the more of them you read the more involved you become with the individuals. Janssen himself with his wife Alice, her daughter Saffy & even Barney the dog leap off the page into reality with the subtle writing expressing humour, joy & the realities of family life. This is balanced throughout with the business of dealing with serious crime.
Almost all the characters are written equally well, DC Collet & his wife Becca & their troubles. The DCI Tamara Greave, her partner David & her relationship with her parents. The new DC Danny & PC Marshall (aka Sheriff) all have their part to play. Much of the story in this book is taken up with the investigation with Eric Collet & Cassie doing much of the heavy lifting. Throughout the characters personalities are maintained & they react as their personality dictates they should, whilst going about the daily life of a police station during a serious crime investigation. This is almost like a soap that you become completely immerse in & want to know what happens next.
I should point out that the story is also exceptional & unique making the total package unmissable. The score of 4 stars is only because I think the reader needs to have read the previous books to make it a 5 star book. I have written this for those who have not experienced the Hidden Norfolk series before. If like me you have I'm sure you'll think this is worthy of a 5 star rating.

Another fantastic book by JM Dalgliesh with a gripping storyline and plot, with strong characters, plenty of twists, and turns and revelations. I never saw coming.
The descriptive is so well written that you can visualise the characters and what's happening in the storyline.
I have read all of the series, which can be read as a standalone. To say they just keep getting better and better is an understatement.
This book captures you from the very start, and you are glued till the end. It does keep you guessing as you read to a surprising out of the blue conclusion.
Although I always have these books on pre-order, I would like to thank the author for the advanced copy.

Always a five star read

Love this series with Tom and his team, always an excellent read, love the character's and team dynamics, and can't help having a soft spot for Eric, so I was thrilled with the ending as he's been like a lost puppy. A bit of a sad tale this one, with no particular winners but keeps your interest the whole way through and an outcome you wouldn't predict until the end. I would thoroughly recommend all of J M Dalgliesh's books and really, as is best with most series, you are best of starting at the beginning to get an insight into the character's and their journey.

I really enjoy this series and I am always looking forward the next book. I like the characters and how their relationships changes and develops. However story-wise you do not have to read the books in chronological order. It is ok to skip one and not get the solution in the next, like in some series.
Also the story telling is catching and I got really hooked into this one. And I certainly did not see the solution coming at all! But I admit I felt sorry for one person in the whole story, because he did not deserve it, he tried to help, but he paid the price.
The book is really good and I can recomment it.

The episode deals with a very modern crime. The plot is well structured with good clues and good red-herring characters. The main characters are developing nicely, so my interest remains. Everything about this is a good, solid, cozy detective mystery novel. Again, it doesn't earn a 5 because it is just that -- a cozy!

One thing that Dalgliesh does really well, however, is write a clear, action-packed climax. When he includes those I marvel at how well he keep the action moving without losing his reader in the ruckus. Although, I don't NEED action, I do enjoy reading his because they are so clear. That still doesn't earn him a 5, but it gets closer to a 4+.

I killed him, no I killed him, no I'm Spatacus...

The great team in the Hidden Norfolk books get their man again, or men or maybe women. I am glad I don't have to decide because I think it was one of the dead guys. Or possibly all of them.
J M Dalgliesh only needed a walk on part by Poirot to have closets full of skeletons bursting open to confess.
Twists, turns, red herrings, mum, dads, foster parents, friends and Katy all make this a book that I could not put down. It had me captivated from first page to last. A great read.

Good story

DI Jansenn and the team are back. The mystery in this one is a bit murky, if I'm honest. I never did get a solid feel for the motive of the murder and that is probably because we don't really get a clear murderer. It's all a bit, murky. That's probably how it is in real life sometimes buy in books you get used to clear cut answers to such critical questions as who, exactly, is the murderer in a murder mystery and why did they do it. Having said that, this latest installment is well worth the read.

Family ties.

So a young girl runs away from her foster parents, or was she taken?
Tom and his team have a murder case as well. A disliked bouncer is stabbed and strangled. His thug of a brother is out for revenge, and has no boundaries.
The young girl, Katy, has been in care a number of times, as her mother is both an addict and schizophrenic. When she has an episode, she can be violent.
That's just the start. A good read, believable characters and many threads, which baffle the team.
Are the two cases connected?.....

4.5⭐️ rounded up! Such a roller coaster. Took me a while to get into the book, but around 10% in I was hooked. Found it a little hard to keep track of some of the ancillary characters (maybe because they were British, maybe because I was tired 🤷🏻‍♂️) but that didn’t take away from the twists and turns that prevented me from putting the book down! I thought the transition from the climax point to the end was a bit rushed or cheesy, but overall still REALLY enjoyed this author and will likely read other books in hidden Norfolk!

A solid storyline in the next chapter

My only gripe was the topic around grooming was so light tough, I spent the first half of the book thinking "grooming for gangs/county lines" rather than anything else, as the brothers were drug dealers.
Personally I prefer a more direct storyline.
Danny definitely needs to be taken down a peg or two, and I will be sorely disappointed if Eric stays with Becca, as I have only just accepted Tom & Alice are a permanent pairing! (Was hoping Tom & Tamara would eventually get together........

3.5 but rounded up.

I seriously dislike the new DC Danny. He's an ass and just not very good at his job.

I think I like PC Wilson, Sheriff. However, these two new characters are almost interchangeable in my mind. Both are introduced to expand the cast but not enough time to get to know them enough and keep them separate. I admit this could just be a 'me' thing.

The storyline is good and moves along but ends up being rather big and ends/wraps up too quickly and easily for the type of crime that is revealed.

Great Book!!

I just finished Dead to Me. It was fantastic! I have said it before but I’m saying it again. J M Dalgliesh writes absolutely thrilling stories without the distracting bad language. They grip you and keep you reading. Tom and his team are the best! The story will keep you reading and guessing from the start. And the ending! Wow! I highly recommend this book. Beth P.

Another Norfolk crime drama

DI Janssen and his team are back trying to solve a murder and a missing teenager. New team members have joined up and there is a,new Superintendent who doesn't seem too keen on his team, Tamara is concerned he may split them up.

Coupled with a difficult time in his personal life DI Janssen is juggling the needs of his job with finding time to solve the latest crime.

As usual things are not as they seem and there is a twist in the tail.

A Curates egg

I've enjoyed these Norfolk yarns until this latest effort. The opening 60% was quite frankly boring, the book at no point grabbed my attention, in fact I nearly quit this read because it just didn't match up to my expectations. It did improve towards the end with the final exchange between Tamara and Cassie being the highlight. I hope his original drive and invention are recaptured for future exploits and this effort is just a blip on the road to future success

Superb!

I am never disappointed with Jason's books. And I always find that as soon as I've finished one, I'm looking forward to starting the next. This book was eventful and current without being unpleasant to read. The team were kept really busy with what appeared to be two separate cases. A missing teenager and a murder of a very unpleasant man! An excellent read and I can't wait for the next book.

Another great read from one of my favourite authors.
Tom, Tamara and the rest of the team are chasing down the murder of a most unsavoury character who’s body is found in a remote and unlikely place.
Story moves along with pace, twists and turns and an ending which allows the reader to make his own judgement. Wouldn’t want to be a juror in those trials. And the new Superintendent is lurking….
Looking forward to the next one already.

Dead to me -

Another great book in the series. As usual Tom and the team go about trying to solve a murder of a man left in an unused scrap yard. Also a young girl has gone missing, are both tied together? A would only say I felt the ending was slightly disappointing, but didn’t spoil the book. 4.75 out of 5. I would have like to have seen a more conclusive ending to give 5.

I usually love this series and fly through these books. The plot in this was unbelievably boring - I couldn’t believe how drawn out it was. Usually there is a lot of character or relationship development but nothing in this one. The big ending and resolution just didn’t quite make the mark for this series.

Annoyed because this got me into a bit of a reading slump when I adore this author, series and characters typically. Hopefully the next one is better.

Dead to Me: A Hidden Norfolk Thriller (Book 13). J M Dalgliesh

Another book I couldn’t put down, which is a shame because the enjoyment doesn’t last as long. As many times as I have tried reading this series I have never been able to break the link between the major players until it’s played out in words. This means the books are well prepared, well written and so so good to read. I can recommend you start at Book No 1. Here’s to your enjoyment and thank you J M Dalgliesh x

I'm sorry to anyone who actually enjoyed this book, if I'm honest I skimmed alot because it was alot of unnecessary information. like also I don't want to admit it but I thought this was by a different author so that's the only reason I read it. idk if ur motivated to read a book you could generally enjoy it but for me personally I did not feel like reading this when at chapter 2 I realised the writing battles was different to the author I usually read crime from.

These Hidden Norfolk thrillers seem to get better with each book. Maybe it’s the familiarity with the characters.
Dead to Me is well-done, no wasted words, a credible plot and an exciting climax. I enjoyed it very much.

Another cleverly crafted murder mystery by Mr. Dalgleish. I thought I had the murderer(s) pegged before the ending but again, I was mistaken. After reading the prior twelve segments, I expected to get this one. The character development of the investigating officers continues and the story is intriguing. My only regret as I read the 14th segment is that this is the last of the series. Don't start the series unless you plan on reading all 14 segments.

Another interesting Hidden Norfolk mystery. Nice characters and a story that moves right along. As far as I am concerned, usless characters should be written out of the series. Tamara's mother needs to go away and why, at this late date in the series is there Danny who really doesn't fit in with the rest of the team. When the family dynamics were introduced, it really wasn't that hard to figure out the culprit. A not so tidy ending but the Eric/Becca scene at the end was nice.

A body of a male is discovered in a breakers yard in the village of Fring, brutally murdered. Who is later identified as 32 year old Simon Shears. But what could be the motive and will this be the only death. Meanwhile habitual absconder Katy Roper has gone missing from her foster home.
D.I. Tom Janssen and his team investigate both cases.
An entertaining well-written modern mystery. Another good addition to this enjoyable series with its cast of likeable and varied characters.

Amazing book, has it all

I have read every book in this series. this has to be one of the best story lines in the series, can't wait to read book 14. my family book club jas so enjoyed the series. What would make it better is if all the books were in audible when released. Several of the book club members only fo audible books.

Another great book in the Hidden Norfolk series and DI Jansen and the team. Lots of twists and turns, plots and sub plots and an unpredictable ending!! Thrown into that mix is a new member to the team as well as the side stories of the established team members. Great series and already looking forward to the next book in June!!

Wonderful book

This intriguing book keeps your interest to the end. The lives of our investigators are as interesting as the murder. The obvious overkill of a man stuffed in a trunk of a car is just the beginning of this who done it with plenty of possible suspects. Interesting characters make this a worthwhile book to read.

I enjoy this series a great deal yes. I Amy guess who the murderer is but the story leading up to it is tight and pleasantly descriptive. I seldom skip over paragraphs since each contains a tidbit leading into the discovery. I would love to see this in a tv series.
