Misbehaving Billionaires #1

The Billionaire's Beagle

Rate this book
Above all else, Letty detests liars. A good girl through and through, she’s always tried to walk a straight line, which hasn’t been easy given her father walked a crooked path that led him to prison.
Wes is attracted to Letty the moment he meets her. One of the things he loves about her is she thinks he’s just a beach bum working at the local hotel and she’s okay with him just as (she thinks) he is.
But when Betty the beagle gets kidnapped, the budding romance goes off the rails and Wes and Letty are forced fess up to their lies and exaggerations before their problems (and beagles) get completely out of hand and off leash.
Romantic comedy fans and dog-lovers will enjoy this sweet beach-side romp by USA Today bestselling author, Kristy Tate.

Dr. Seuss was my first love. When my mom left me in the children’s section of the library I’d find Horton and the Cat. My mom hated the good doctor and refused to checkout his books. He was my secret, guilty pleasure. Eventually, I read about Narnia, Oz and Green Gables.
When my mom grew too sick to visit the library, a friend brought her a stash of romances which she kept in a big box beside her bed. Weekly, this good friend replenished the box. My mom didn’t know I read her books; it was like the Seuss affair, only sexier. Reading became my escape from a horrific and scary situation. Immersed in a story, I didn’t have to think about the life and death drama taking place on the other side of my bedroom wall. Books were my hallucinogenic drug of choice. In college, I studied literature and fell in love with Elliot, Willa and too many others to mention. (This had no similarity to my dating life.)
I’m no longer a child living with a grieving father and a dying mother, nor am I the co-ed in search of something or someone real, nonfictional. I’m an adult blessed with an abundance of love. I love my Heavenly Father and His son, my husband and family, my dog, my friends, my neighbors, my writing group, the birds outside my window.
Because I’m a writer, I also love my characters. I adore their pluck, courage and mettle. I admire the way they face and overcome hardships. But, as in any romance, I sometimes I get angry with them and think that they are too stupid to live. At those times, I have to remind myself that they live only in my imagination, unless I share. Writing for me is all about sharing--giving back to the world that has so generously shared with me-- because I learned a long time ago that the world is full of life and death dramas. Sometimes we need a story to help us escape.
And we need as much love as we can find. That’s why I write romance.

3.5-4*

This book premise kept catching my eye and when the author was offering advanced copies through her newsletter I requested one.

The opening scene was pretty comical but Letty, the main female character, had me wondering if I would connect with her or end up not liking the book. There were a couple swear words in that scene as well and with not having previously read many other books by this author, I again wasn't quite sure what to expect.

Let me tell you that I changed my mind the further into the book I read. The more information that was revealed, the more I understood Letty and Wes' characters. The motivation behind their actions and choices.

This book had some hidden (or rather unspoken/unclarified identities) within, dealt a lot with being truthful and honest, deceitful people, trying to prove oneself and finding the healing needed after some life situations.

I laughed, I cringed, I cheered on Betty the Beagle. Ok, I was rooting for Wes and Letty (the human) as well. Overall it was a fun read as well as one that made me think about relationships and actions as well...oh and forgiveness.

I've got several of Kristy Tate's books waiting for me on my kindle and I'm looking forward to finding some more time to enjoy them. Did I mention that opening scene? Let me just say I might have been frozen in shock, mortified and unsure what to do. Letty's best friend was my hero in that scene. Oh and the whole play on Betty the Beagle and the not Betty the Beagle. Hysterical. I was highlighting some of the lines/scenes. Funny, funny, funny! And Letty's mom and her mom's friend who owns the cafe...cracked me up with their antics.

Grab a copy if you enjoy some fun humor as well as some sweet romance. Wes was a great character. I kept cheering for him and hoping Letty would see the real him.

Content. Clean. There are a couple mild swear words at the beginning but I don't remember any more throughout the book. Nothing more than kissing.

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Read to the 50% point

Stopped when we got to the part where the poor, working nurse, just realizes the man she has come to care for, is unbelievably wealthy.
So, she does what all the poor girls do in every romance book, when placed in that situation. She runs away. I have no idea why. It seems to make sense only to these ‘romance’ writers. It eludes me.
It is such an overdone story line, I have just stopped reading when I reach the ‘“Well you should know I’m rich” ...and she runs away,’ point. In every story.
Just once I’d like to see the girl be excited, she has found love, and a billionaire in one fell swoop. You know? Without the whole struggle to come to terms with the apparently painful fact that she has not only found love, but that money problems, will no longer BE a problem. Just once. I’d love it.

What did I miss?

The storyline was progressing well, there was growth with the characters... And then suddenly the next page feels like I missed a whole chapter! I'm not sure what happened. Perhaps the author suddenly needed to wrap things up, or meant to come back and add some depth but forgot, but in either case the story didn't feel complete and the ending felt very rushed and unbelievable.
There were numerous great quotes and passages along the way. Many things to ponder.
Not sure that this read is worthy of a repeat however.

First in the Misbehaving Billionaires cozy romance series and revolving around a confused young man and a bitter young woman.

My Take
Yes, it was cute and sweet with two separate story lines that Tate brings together early on with Betty's inciting incident. Naughty doggie.

Wes' story arc discovers the truth about his ambitions...with a mention from Grandfather and a tip from Lincoln. I do like that Wes has his own sense of who to treat right. Meanwhile, poor Wes wants to meet someone who is more interested in him than his money.

Letty has an even bigger story arc, getting past her father's misdeeds, although she does have some excellent insight on her own and from Wes and her aunt and uncle. I can understand why Letty wants to meet someone who doesn't lie...I do like how she slaps Leo down, lol. Jerk. Even Barbara has her own helplessness to get over. Blogging? Who knew.

Tate could have really brought in the tension — she certainly sets us up for it what with Lincoln possibly being a vampire. As for Lincoln's dog duplicitousness, that could've been mined for more. In either direction. There's the too-easy kidnapping, the beach party, Nessa's hostility, Leo, the lost wallet, etc., that could have been expanded.

Mom and Floe are way too obvious in their "stealth" plotting, and it makes me wonder what kind of nurse Letty is when she's so unobservant. I'm also confused about where Letty lives. It sounds like she's near her mother who lives near the beach, but Tate mentions Irvine...which is not near the beach. In fact there are a lot of places mentioned but I have no idea how any of these connect or how close they are.

Wes is kind of a wuss. He just wants to float along in his chosen, unpaid career. He doesn't want to work at his grandfather's hotels, but he does enjoy the money from it all. I did enjoy that red herring when Grandfather tells Wes he's to look after Betty. Talk about a panicky moment, lol.

That "reveal" by Wes was not well thought-out — and left another jump in the story. Yet Letty is quite the hypocrite who does not want to consider another's perspective or that one's behavior may change depending upon the situation. Oy. I'm rather suspicious of Letty's dad's sudden turnabout. It seems too easy, too fast.

And we've been learning all this from third person dual protagonist point-of-view from Wes' and Letty's perspectives. I do wish that POV would explain why Letty pops into Wes' suite near the end. It's another jump in the story.

Hmm, I'm going to assume that Tate meant San Luis Obispo.

All in all, yes, it's a fun story, but Tate could have done a better job connecting events in the story.

The Story
Above all else, Letty detests liars. A good girl through and through, she’s always tried to walk a straight line, which hasn’t been easy given her father walked a crooked path that led him to prison.

Wes is attracted to Letty the moment he meets her. One of the things he loves about her is she thinks he’s just a beach bum working at the local hotel and she’s okay with him just as (she thinks) he is.

But when Betty the beagle gets kidnapped, the budding romance goes off the rails, and Wes and Letty are forced to 'fess up to their lies and exaggerations before their problems (and beagles) get completely out of hand and off leash.

The Characters
The distrustful Felicity "Letty" Ashton is a nurse, about to no longer be sharing an apartment with Harper. Barbara Ashton, Mom, is depressed about Dad's embezzling and addiction. Dorkie is Mom's Yorkie. Harper, Letty's sister, is getting married to Chet. Marmmy is Letty's maternal grandmother, who lives with Aunt Glenda in Mesa, Arizona. Dad had been a mutual fund manager. Letty has an aunt and uncle who live near Morro Bay. I think they're Shari, a professor, and Matt, dad's older brother. Cousin Ida is going to edit a podcast for Barbara's Bites.

Claris, a dog trainer, is Letty's best friend. Courtney is Claris' sister.

Dr Weston "Wes" Connor (PhDs in history and literature) doesn't want his grandfather's business; he simply wants to write his alternative history Civil War screenplay. He lives on his boat, The Seabird .

Wes' grandfather is the owner of the Montlake chain of hotels. Betty is Grandfather's way-too-fat beagle. Lincoln is Grandfather's attorney. Carl is Lincoln's nephew, a Marine home on medical leave. Wes' mom (Ellie is Grandfather's daughter) is a librarian in Oregon and married to Tom, a sociology professor at Oregon State. Sounds like they're both a couple of hypocrites as well.

Floe's Café is where Mom works for free. Floe is the bohemian type owner married to Dan. Monique is one of the waitresses.

The gold-digging , know-it-all, gossipy, snooty Vanessa "Nessa" Walgreen is from Wes' social crowd. Henry Rollins is an old friend of Wes'. Jordan, a realtor, is a friend from Wes' writer's workshop. Whit Dodd, a mutual fund manager, is the friend with whom Wes went marlin fishing. Diana "Diana Disaster" McCallister, a neighbor of Whit's, crashed her sailboat.

The Montlake Crew
The Montlake employees who help out include Max, Kade, James, Marc, Holden, and Carl. Marco is the head chef and his crew includes Gemma, Hollister, Leonard, Gabby (she makes the salads), Hernandez, and Chuck. Mitchell is a lead waiter. Mark Hart is the head of marketing. Elaine is head of accounting. Jack is the real estate manager. Bill is the concierge. Lucy is head of the cleaning crew.

Leo Ellsworth, a commercial realtor, is an ex-boyfriend of Letty's. The rehab center is Leo's mother's second home. Jerry, Chet's Barbie of a cousin, is an insensitive wedding planner. Sounds like Cheater Charlie is another ex-boyfriend.

Hacienda Hot Springs is a healing and recovery center. Mrs Hendricks had been an unhappy client at one of their hotels. The fussy Donald is catering the wedding. Mr Cronk is one of Letty's patients. The dogs in Claris' class include Gloria Halleluiah, a poodle puppy; Bruiser is a boxer; and, Fido is Claris' dog. Jenna had been a model and fellow student in high school. Art du Coeur Studio is an art gallery owned by Gus. Mayor Hildebrand.

Emerson and Emily are the three-year-old twins who arrive five years later.

The Cover and Title
The cover is a lightly distressed, warmish pale gray background with Wes on the left in a deep blue suit and unbuttoned white shirt, leaning up against the wall, one hand fiddling with his cuff and one ankle crossed behind the other. On the right is Betty in profile, sitting on the sidewalk. The title is in a gradated navy to light royal blue to the right of Wes' head. An info blurb in a thin black is below Wes' and Betty's feet while below that is the author's name in a thicker black.

That title is all about The Billionaire's Beagle that crashes the wedding and provides the inciting incident.

I found the book to be funny and sweet, and a book that I would let my teenage daughter or my mom read without any embarrassment. I loved the loyalty the grandson(Wes) shows to his grandfather and his dog in a time when Wes needs to step up and help. I liked the naivety of Letty about some things and how she was more knowledgeable than her mother about other things. It is a light hearted book that will give you reason to laugh, to sigh, maybe sniffle, and to cheer. It will entertain you and at the end you will have a smile on your face. Doesn't get much better than that when you need a reality break!

This is an enjoyable read about Letty and Wes. When Letty first meets Wes, she thinks he’s just a beach bum. He doesn’t enlighten her, lol. Letty despises liars because her father is in prison right now. When his grandfather has to go away for treatment, he tells Wes he’s going to move into the hotel and work every position and take care of his beagle, Betty. Hijinks ensue and someone ends up stealing Betty. Will they find her before grandfather returns? Will Wes be able to keep Letty in his life once she finds out who he really is? No spoilers, so grab your copy. I will say, I really enjoyed the ending.

Funny

Letty was dealing with her sister getting married, her father in prison and her mom having to sell their home. Wes has been called by his grandfather to see him, he is but nervous, his grandfather is a tough cookie. His grandfather wants him to work at the hotel and take of his dog while he is in treatment after a heart attack. Letty & Wes meet when Betty the Beagle wants some of Harper's wedding cake.

Cute

Cute little romance and story about beagles. Would have liked more romance and some chemistry between the characters though. The ending seemed rather rushed.

3.5 stars - flawed but fun

I enjoyed this amusing romance with its beagle-centric premise. The main characters are well written and sympathetic. The connection between Letty & Wes wasn't really developed well enough, so we just have to take it for granted that there's substantive reasons for their attraction to each other.

Towards the end of the story, things started to get choppy in the telling. For example, the aunt & uncle are looking at Letty's mom's blog laughing - and we never find out what was so funny. It just moves on and we learn a little later that her mom started a cooking blog.

And the development of the characters is a little hard to follow at the end. We're barely given a glimpse of Letty's mindset from her visit to her dad, and then she's ready to forget everything and go back to Wes.

In part, it's the choppy way that the narrative jumps around in time, but I can see why other reviewers say that the ending felt rushed. The story wraps up before all of its threads are tied up.

Still, a pleasant afternoon's diversion and I'm looking forward to the next book.

Clean romance level: sweet kisses

It felt rushed and undeveloped

This book felt like it was a first time effort. I liked the story, but it wasn't fleshed out enough. People were just thrown into the story and we didn't know anything about them and why they were part of the story. The same thing happened in the preview to the next book. There were no follow -throughs. We never found out what happened to the psycho stalker girl, the best friend was hanging out with everyone she met (or so it seemed that way, since there were so many random people thrown into the story I couldn't remember who was who!), and the spelling, grammar and punctuation were terrible. It's like the author just sat down one evening and decided to write a book all in one sitting. The ending and the events that led up to it were, again, rushed through. We never really got the details of how Letty and Wes worked everything out. It just doesn't make sense to write a book that is so careless and unfinished, and it's not satisfying for the reader either. I'm sure Kristy is a very nice lady and some people will enjoy it, but it wasn't substantial reading because the characters weren't substantial.

Kristy Tate's "The Billionaire's Beagle" is a great diversion from daily life. It's sweet enough for my granddaughters to read and it's a rom-com for me. I wasn't aware how much I was laughing until my husband asked what was I reading. Guess my laughter was a bit too loud.
The female lead character Letty hates liars and she is angry with her jailbird Father. The male lead Wes lives on the water and is as happy with his life. His Grandfather has different plans for Wes. With the help of his assistant, Lincoln, Grandfather wants Wes to take over the family hotel business. Wes will learn each job from the bottom to the top. Wes will have an even more task that includes living onsite. Betty Beagle, Grandfather's overweight pet, needs someone to care of her while her owner recovers from a heart.
The meeting of the lead characters leads to the usual rom-com complications; but TBB is worth reading. I will be reading the rest of this series.

Finding love 💘 and double the trouble?

Wes is put on the spot by his recuperating grandfather to learn how to run the hotel conglomeration if he wants to remain as the heir, and care for Betty his grandfather's beagle. He meets Letty at her sister's wedding reception on the hotel grounds when Betty gets loose and decimates the wedding cake.
Lincoln, his grandfather's attorney, gets another beagle that matches Betty in case something happens to the original one. They get a surprise the night 🌙 of the earthquake when Betty #2 gives birth. When his grandfather shows up a few days later, he's angry and upset with Wes until he finds out how Wes has stepped up and coped so well with the hotel especially in the aftermath of the earthquake and that the original Betty is not the mother of the puppies.

Letty meets Wes and becomes very attracted to him. Wes’s tells her the Beagle dog is named Betty, and it’s his grandfather’s dog that he is taking care of. Letty wants someone she can trust since her dad lied to her and her family . Wes is attracted to Letty but wants to make sure she is not after his money. Wes is working at local hotel which his grandfather is owner of all the Montlake Chain Hotels. Letty’s mom works at Flo’s Cafe and they are both trying to arrange Letty and Wes together. When Letty finds out why Betty is so important to Wes and that he is a billionaire will their friendship last or is Letty just after his money?

I Don't Like Rom-Coms but ---

There's something about this one. I enjoyed it. It is good romance but it's also full of truth as well as romance and humor.
Wes wants to be ordinary.
Letty wants her father not to be in prison for embezzlement.
Neither can change the truth. They promise not to lie to one another. But each lies by omission.
How do they reach each other?
You'll have to read the book and find out.
Tate creates a believable tale of woe and reformation.
Recommended for readers of realistic rom-coms, which up until now I would have considered impossible.

The Billionaire's Beagle

An interesting story. When Lettie encountered Wes at her sister's wedding reception, after Betty (the Beagle) ruined the wedding cake, she had no idea he was wealthy. Wes's grandfather had put him in charge of looking after Betty and proving he could be responsible enough to take over the helm. Lettie's mother was pushing her, which only confused her more. She needs to come to terms with her father before she can trust her feelings. Enough interesting events to keep you interested. I would give it 5 stars

Cute light romance. Fun escape. Discussion of secrets and how they can hurt a relationship, even if hesitancy is part of it.
Always enjoy a cute read. Loved how Letty and Wes opened up to each other and learned a little bit more how their attraction was a good thing, even if they both weren't exactly forthcoming with all of who they were. Cute fun read and lovely sweet heartfelt romance with two honest hearts.

Juvenile characters

I kept forgetting that the main characters are supposed to be adults in their 20s. They are so immature that they come across as high school students. It is difficult to believe that either of them can occupy positions of responsibility. I feel dislike, frustration, and annoyance at the vapidness of the female main character, and the male isn't much better. There are better books out there. Skip this one entirely.

‘The Billionaire’s Beagle’ was entertaining. Its plot involved big-time transgressions, proving to be inheritance-ready, a grave mishap at a wedding, a beagle, humor, using nursing skills, another beagle, visiting the incarcerated dad, making amends, reconnecting with the granddad, and falling in love. Also, I liked the author’s vivid word choices, which communicated a lively tone. Overall, I liked the amusing narrative.

This is a funny, lovable story about an old hotel owner leaving his grandson Wes in charge of the business and his beloved beagle Betty!

Letty and Wes meet when Betty escapes and does something naughty at Letty’s sisters wedding!

What follows is a story of let downs, untruths, heartache but also a lesson in forgiveness and love!

The Billinaire's Beagles

The story line I enjoyed. At times it was hard to follow as it jumped and I felt chunks were missed, especially as chapters didn't specify times or a lapse to time. The beginning I had to read twice to understand how people fitted together. Your editor may need to learn English as gun and gone are very different. This was not the only grammatical error.

What's Betty Eating Now?

Enjoyed this full length story about a dog named Betty! Betty lent toward the humor in this book and lovey how author gave Betty, the Beagle, a personality. The story's main characters were fun as well. Of course there were problems to solve, but love won in the end.

An interesting, funny story with two characters working through their feelings about family problems and slowly getting to know each other. It did seem like the story could have been a little longer, as it feels rushed before the epilogue. But I was happy that Lettie finally got over the fact that Wes was super rich, which was good as he is basically an easy-going, down-to-earth guy.

Beagle On The Cover

To be honest, the beagle is what got me to read this book. This was a cute little Rom com about Wes and Letty and some beagles. Wes is, or will be, a billioaire. Leftie thinks he lied to her about who he was and so she becomes standoffish. There are a few other little family scenarios to sort out as well. All in all a very enjoyable and quick read.
