The Crossroads Series #2

In the Service of Shadows

Rate this book
Logan has never wanted to hear the dead. He wants nothing more than to ignore the haunting whispers and the strange things that only he can see. But he can’t ignore a woman in danger, and the enigmatic Salome Trasmoz is undeniably haunted by an evil spirit that seeks to do her harm.

No good deed goes unpunished, and in helping Salome escape her spiritual stalker, Logan discovers not everyone shares his reluctance to meddle in the supernatural. Some seek out powers beyond their control, and don’t care who has to die along the way.

Logan is back in this worthy sequel to Call From the Crossroads. Some months after recovering from injuries incurred doing his adventures in the previous book, Logan tries to get his life back on track and recover some semblance of normality. While he would love nothing more than to live a normal life without the whispers of the dead, his sense of duty compels him to watch over Salome, a woman with a fascination with otherworldly forces, from her supernatural stalker. Glenny is very dearly missed as she makes only a few appearances but Logan’s dynamic with Salome, his main companion for this story, is fun to follow and we get to spend time with Logan’s family.

While much of the book revolves around demonic spirits, the whispers of the undead and people with murderous intent, the main source of drama though understated is grief. Unresolved and suppressed grief can be difficult to pull off without coming off as whiny and petulant but here, it is sympathetic and complex, illustrating the withdrawal from support systems, lashing out, and vulnerability that can come from loss.
The action scenes are well done, exciting and easy to follow. This engrossing page turner has plenty of “oh shit!” moments that catch you off guard and I look forward to seeing what comes next for Logan.

I received a free copy of this book via BookFunnel and am voluntarily leaving a review.

In the Service of Shadows brings back Logan and Glenny and introduces us to a host of new, very well-defined and interesting characters. It delivers a creepy supernatural plot loaded with twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my proverbial seat. I am pretty sure I held my breath for one entire chapter. It certainly felt like it. If you are looking for rapid paced, non-stop thrills, you will love this book.

Even better than the first book. Less of a murder mystery and more a supernatural intrigue, ItSoS takes us to Austin where Logan spots a malevolent presence stalking a young woman. When he intervenes in her defense, he proves that no good deed goes unpunished and that, in this strange new world, nothing is as it seems.

You can see it, can’t you…

It started with voices, voices from the dead begging to be heard. Now he’s also seeing… something, something purely evil. And Logan can not just stand by, he follows the woman that evil is after, but can he help this time? He has no idea what he is getting into…

Logan is back! I enjoyed reading this second instalment in the series. This time Logan is not just hearing the voices of the dead but also seeing evil. Trying to show his family that he can function independently, he looks for work that will not drive him crazy. But when he is offered a job after saving a woman, he is in more trouble than he realises. This instalment has voices of the dead, demons and sacrifices. He doesn’t have Glenny’s support this time, his family doubts his mental stability, and he is not even allowed to drive!

Logan’s sarcastic humour is even better this time around. The dead man’s voice also becomes annoying in this book (by now I’m pretty sure it is intentional…), and I still feel for Logan having to cope with everything. The author makes it easy to have sympathy for him, and although I thought the story left with some unanswered questions for me, it was still a good one. This was just published, so I’ll have to wait a bit for a new book, but I will definitely read it.

Paranormal ghost story; multiple ghosts repetitive calling is annoying but fits into story well. Logan is a vet and has learned to take a punch but also suffers from PTSD. This 2nd in series is Not as good as first in series. Purchased this edition on November 15, 2023, from Amazon for $3.99 plus .43 tax.

Book 2 of the series dives deeper into Logan's mental health issues. He begins to see into the other world, which makes his vision as untrustworthy in the real world as his hearing has been.
In the Service of Shadows is a fun ride, if darker than book one. We get less of the fun banter with Glenny, only seeing a bit at the beginning and the end. Once it gets into the meat of the plot, it takes a hard left turn into the macabre.
I was okay with that, but it is pretty heavy.
The rough part of this book for me was the pacing. It starts slow, with the first five chapters feeling like a transition between books one and two. It's setting up Logan's circumstances, which eventually lead him into his next big challenge. It just takes a bit too long to get there.
Then we have fifteen chapters hunting the unknown antagonist, with the tension building steadily up to the threshold of a climax... and then it fizzles. Logan goes home, the tension drains, leaving us with some sludge at the bottom of the pool and a vague feeling that it can't quite be over yet.
Then we get three chapters of mundane family politics, before being presented with a twist that begins to rebuild the tension. But again, it builds slowly, feeling like a whole new storyline at the end of the book.
The new thread builds to a climax, and we are left with a not-quite-cliffhanger, just an unresolved thread that points to book three.
I enjoyed the read, and will continue the series, but readers should be aware that the structure of this one could be frustrating. If you can get past that, I think it's worth reading.

While I didn't read Book 1 of this series, I enjoyed Book 2. This is a story of ghosts and demonic spirits who are haunting Logan Dalguerre. He has just been released from psychiatric care and doesn't want to go back. The spook factor is high in this story. The characters are well written and the plot is interesting. I received an advance copy of this book via the author and this is my honest review.
