The Harvest Festival has come to Kern Creek again, and farm girl Maisie is excited to take in the sights, sample her favorite fall treats, and enjoy the evening. But when her out-of-control boyfriend Daniel crosses a line in a drunken rage, she flees into the dark of the cornfield to save herself. Exhausted, scared, and somehow lost in the very fields she grew up exploring, the full moon reveals an unexpected addition to the a scarecrow she's never seen before. No mere decoration, old druidic magic has given the strange straw man - Corbin - a sentry's reprieve on equinox night. The dark bargain he offers in turn is as intoxicating as Old Man Walker's cider and twice as sweet - but will Maisie dare accept it?
This wasn’t bad. The story and all was fine, but I just loved the writing itself. Almost more than the content and even the sexual encounters. Maisie is our lead here and she is very young, in an abusive relationship with Dan, who is an overbearing, drunk, loudmouth wife-beater. Enter Corbin and there is some definitive resolution to Maisie’s issues. Not just with Dan, but also a little something to scratch that itch of hers. You get where I’m headed? Now, in all honesty, I was so hoping that Corbin’s penis was going to be a corn cob, still in the husk. It made so much sense. And it would have made for some hilarious internal monologue from Maisie. So, aside from that minor critique, it lacked some much needed story and character development, all because it is a very short story. This tends to be why I avoid such brevity, but some stories are too interesting not to read. Again, the star here was the writing, which was crisp as a brand new dollar bill.
I enjoyed this book more than 'Unhinged' also by Vera Valentine. It was a nice slow burn and I liked the concept way more. But I felt so bad for the main character in the beginning because she had to act a certain way for her boyfriend to like her. But I'm glad she was able to end the relation ship with him and date a scarecrow I guess. 😭 The cover of this book is deceiving because not once was the scarecrow actually attached to the post he was a human the whole time. But what I liked about the scarecrow that he respected the main character the whole time and stood up to her boyfriend for her.
Overall this was another book that I enjoyed by Vera Valentine and I can't wait to see what I will read from her next.
“No. Never your fault, Maisie. The fault of weak character in lesser men that do not deserve your attention.”
Probably one of the best scarecrow romances I've read - and you all know I've read several. Corbin is a totally devoted servant to Maisie (I think her name is a corn pun lmaoooooooo), he has a corn cob d- [foghorn sounds], and he puts her abusive, misogynistic ex in his place. Literally. Loved this.
“Puny mortal. All these riches, all this growth and prosperity, and you act like this? You dare raise a hand to the most radiant?”
I soo wish this was longer, because I simply have not had enough of Corbin and Maisie. Dan did ruin the moment for me though, so I wish we got more of just the two of them after he was dealt with.
Well….that was fun. I’ll never be able to see or eat corn on the cob the same ever again😂
If you want something less than 50 pages, a scarecrow come to life with interesting anatomy, a hot fuck in front of your ex boyfriend to show how he should have been treating and pleasing you, and a read that doesn’t take itself too seriously give Hayseed a try! I am quickly learning with this being my second Vera read, that when I want an out of the box kind of monster romance, she is the one to do it and do it so incredibly well.
4⭐️ 3🔥
TWs: physical abuse (the FMC gets slapped by her boyfriend in the beginning and she then proceeds to punch him in return)
Good leaving abuse story - c*ckholding isn’t for me though
I’m an unapologetic monster smut reader and the monster aspect wasn’t what made me uncomfortable with this book. A scarecrow is pretty mild TBH. What was difficult for me was the cuckhold aspect that, while deserved, took away from the magic of the moment. However, that could just be a personal taste thing. The FMC had an awful relationship with her boyfriend and the scarecrow was clearly a better choice. I liked the empowerment that May experienced when she was with him. Because it was a short story, it was short on backstory. Corbin was still mostly a mystery to me at the end of the book. But I had hoped for a little more spice to compensate.
Spice: 3/5
Triggers: slut shaming, domestic violence, emotional abuse
- This girl fucks a scarecrow but the weirdest thing I read in this book was that the girl took a shower with her dog. And not like a werewolf dog not a boyfriend woof woof dog. A canine of the pet kind. I’m a dog person & this isn’t a good look for us. - Corn dick - No like literally his dick is a corn in a corn husk - And it oozes sweet liquid (butter perhaps?) - He called her my radiant harvest like I’m sorry what - He got magic powers like he can control plants ok poison Ivan - He’s using his plant powers for bondage as he should
A very short story. I’m surprised at how much I enjoyed this. Who knew I’d be fine reading about corn. 👀 After all the alien stuff I’ve read I don’t think anything fazes me anymore.
I came here for some spicy crazy scarecrow romance to read on Halloween. I left disappointed. The start of this short story was good. I was getting into the book. Then it just kind of went downhill extremely fast. I just didn't love the story or anything about the book. I know it was supposed to be a quick read, but I was honestly shocked that I was done. I was questioning where the rest of the book was because I just felt like the ending was a little rushed. I wish this would have been better, especially since I've loved this author before, but unfortunately I just didn't love this book.
A naughty little take about a small town farm girl and the scarecrow who saved her from her asshole boyfriend. And if that scarecrow gave her more than she bargained for… more power to them!
This was sort of a monster-lite monster romance mostly because Corbin was WAY less of a monster in his actions than Maisie's douchey ex was. In fact, Corbin was downright worshipful and gentlemanly is you disregard how he almost took out Maisie's ex for trying to hurt her. Which, let's be honest, is a totally reasonable reaction to seeing the woman you adore above all others being threatened.
Anywho. Maisie finds herself in a bit of a pickle when a switch suddenly flips in her and she pushes back against her abusive boyfriend (which is what makes him her ex). She hides in the cornfield to escape them when they decide to teach her a lesson and she ends up stumbling (not literally) over a total hunk of a man who is complete catch compared to her ex. When things turn a little confrontational between her and her ex, Corbin does what any supernaturally enhanced individual would do and protects the woman who is the center of his world.
THINGS HAPPEN (in front of her ex) and Maisie realizes that getting it on with a hunky stranger amongst the corn (I have so many innuendo-y things I want to say here about corn and Corbin's cob and all that, BUT I WON'T!) is probably the best thing that's happened to her in a while. GOOD TIMES!
Honestly I shouldn’t be surprised, Vera is an absolute wizard at weird & s3xy content — but here I am, almost dumbfounded at how she managed to make this SO good. Didn’t think I would ever want a scarecrow monster man to r@il me in a cornfield, but again… here I am 😂
As always with Vera’s work, this is a complete story with a full story arc and an HEA included. The shorter novella length doesn’t detract from the quality at all and while I could absolutely read more about this pairing I don’t feel like I was cheated out of a longer story. It was the perfect bite-sized festive story and I highly recommend it if you’re a fellow connoisseur of weird & steamy stories! 😏🌽🎃♥️
I have 1 critique: it is mentioned that the FMC and her ex-boyfriend graduated high school a year ago, then 2 paragraphs later says she is 21. I mean, I guess she could've gotten held back...twice.
Hayseed by Vera Valentine ⭐⭐⭐✨🌶️🌶️🌶️ Single POV • Paranormal Romance • Fall Vibes • Emotional & Physical Abuse • Drunken Behavior • Dark • Slut-Shaming • Threats of Violence • Gagging • Bondage • Forced Voyeurism • Corncob Genital • Pumpkin Fracking • 48 pages
This one starts heavy with our FMC stuck with a manipulative, abusive, drunk of a boyfriend. (Not a sentient turd, but a human-sized one nonetheless.) Luckily, he’s not the main focus and he gets exactly what he deserves.
Enter our druidic magical scarecrow, Corbin, and his glowing jack-o’-lantern pal Jack. One trip through the cornfield later, you can guess where this goes… and our girl finds out EXACTLY how a man (er, scarecrow) should please her. And yes, food-item genitals are involved.
Now, despite the premise, this isn’t written as campy humor. It’s dark, heavy, and surprisingly empowering. While yes, there are… creative food-item anatomies, the story is more about her reclaiming her power and stepping into independence after abuse. And she does so while getting multiple happy endings under the harvest moon.
Honestly? This is one of those feral reads where you come for the chaos but stay for the character growth.
“Someone needed to be the voice of reason, and it probably wasn’t going to be the murderous, weirdly attractive scarecrow-made-flesh that had been trying to seduce me all night.”
This is a short one, so I’ll simply mark a few observations.
1. Corbin is masterful with epithets, both affirming & degrading. “My radiant harvest” is 💯
2. I’ve discovered I love revenge smut. Idk what to do IRL tho Bc there aren’t monsters lurking around prepared to worship me as I arouse & enrage my exes. I guess I’ll have to get creative.
This book had me questioning myself but Just like all of the other vera books I've read I've fallen in love again I absolutely love this! Can't wait to read more
"I had decided, even before we’d had sex, that I had no intention of letting Corbin go back to being a scarecrow for another long year. The trick of it was that someone needed to remain a sentry in his place."
"no goddess of mine sits in the dirt."
Corbin was the man we all need now I need to know what it feels like to be fucked by a scarecrow
The past tense really made this a big harder to read than I had hoped for. Transitions got really jammed together to make it shorter, the Dan x 🎃 mashup definitely deserved more attention. By the end I hated that guy so much, yuck. Love love love me some Corbin the scarecrow though💖
I borrowed this book from Kindle Unlimited. I enjoyed this book. It was so fun to read. I liked reading about Maisie taking her power back and getting revenge on her abusive ex boyfriend Dan. I would recommend this book if you’re looking for a fun monster romance to read this Fall.
This was not as weird as I thought it was going to be, and it turned out pretty cute. Some things took me out of the story: the ages (they just graduated high school, but they’re 21?) and some of the word choices and idioms.
The switching of places is what I was figuring would happen. I just wish Dan got a harsher punishment than he did.
