German Egyptologist and novelist Georg Moritz Ebers discovered the Egyptian medical papyrus, circa 1550 BC, named Ebers papyrus, at Luxor (Thebes) in the winter of 1873/74.

Ebers early conceived the idea of popularizing Egyptian lore by means of historical romances. Eine ägyptische Königstochter was published in 1864 and obtained great success. His subsequent works of the same kind—Uarda (1877), Homo sum (1878), Die Schwestern (1880), Der Kaiser (1881), of which the scene is laid in Egypt at the time of Hadrian, Serapis (1885), Die Nilbraut (1887), and Kleopatra (1894), were also well received, and did much to make the public familiar with the discoveries of Egyptologists. Ebers also turned his attention to other fields of historical fiction—especially the 16th century (Die Frau Bürgermeisterin, 1882; Die Gred, 1887)—without, however, attaining the success of his Egyptian novels.

Don't let my lengthy reading time fool you into thinking this book was a dud....it definitely is not! But I lost a few weeks reading time just as I got started with this wonderful story so it seemed to take forever to finish.

Lovely young Uarda is the innocent catalyst for a complex series of plots, intrigues, and romances that bring ancient Egypt to life. I still feel as though I am in Thebes, wandering from the temples to the necropolis to the small hut where Uarda lives.

Those days have always fascinated me, and I learned a great deal through this book and the footnotes the author included which cited his sources for certain elements he introduced at various points in the story, such as in a battle scene drawn completely from ancient sources.

At a certain point I could guess where all the plots and skulking around by some of the characters would lead, but that in no way detracted from the pleasure of seeing the many threads woven skillfully into a very thrilling ending.

I will certainly be reading more Georg Ebers in the future.

This is a historian's love story. There is a great history of Egypt in the time of Moses, down to the social details. Great descriptions of places and traditions, gods and people. However, it's not the best love story; the story is predictable. The adventure is written better, but you'd expect that from a male Egyptologist of this time period. I liked t it best as a snapshot of daily Egyptian life.

Good book for those, who have a deep interest in ancient Egypt. This book is more for school reading rather than a mature reader.
