BETH MOORE: The Surpassing Value of Knowing Christ: A Study of Philippians | Paul the Apostle | Resilience in Faith | Trusting God | Bible Study Guide | Pursuit of Jesus | Christian Lessons

Rate this book
The apostle Paul was an extraordinary individual by any measure. From the moment he was introduced to Jesus by name in a blinding flash of light to his final days chained like an animal in a Roman dungeon, he relentlessly pursued Christ and preached the gospel entrusted to him. Paul’s fervor could not be starved, smothered nor drowned. No slander nor accusation could sideline him. No beating with rods could silence the melody of his midnight song. The power of the Holy Spirit that first came gently to Europe in a riverside prayer-gathering soon burgeoned into an earthquake beneath a jailhouse, loosing the chains of every prisoner and dousing a jailer and his household in the waters of baptism. What kind of mindset makes a person like Paul: unstoppable in love, faith and good works even in a steady flow of frustration, conflict and opposition? What keeps a person from becoming cynical when people are notoriously exploiting the gospel and preaching Christ out of selfish ambition? Paul’s brief letter to the saints in Philippi may well capture the mindset that set him apart like no other piece of correspondence from his pen. The book of Philippians is exhortation driven by unabashed affection, inviting the reader to join in imitating his joyful, single-minded pursuit of Jesus. Come along with Beth and Melissa in this four-week, five-session study of Philippians. By the power of the same Holy Spirit who took the gospel to Europe by way of Philippi, discover what Paul magnificently called, The Surpassing Value of Knowing Christ.

4.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My first completed Beth Moore study and couldn’t be more in love with her knowledge and ability to teach and preach scripture. I think the greatest lesson learned is that there truly is nothing more valuable and needed as knowing Christ, through prayer, study and community.

I just finished going through this Bible Study with several ladies at church. I always appreciate Beth Moore's passion for the written Word of God and the depth and research you get in each study. The videos are long (leaving less time for group discussion in a traditional Bible Study timeframe), but I do think that is where her teaching skills shine and they are worth the time. The study itself is pretty good but I didn't love how it was organized - lots of fill-in-the-blanks and leading questions that are pretty hit or miss to me. The homework each week is pretty hefty (took me 30-45 minutes), but you don't really need to do anything outside of the book itself for the study. This is definitely a study you get more out of when you do the homework and reading which really is the point of Beth Moore studies - to get women in the Word!

I was encouraged and challenged through this study. Loved learning more about the historical context and connecting narratives in Acts & Philippians. It also had me looking at familiar words/ verses in new ways. No matter how many times you have read Philippians, you can learn something new and draw closer to the Lord. What a gift that the Word of God is living and active!

Finished this study with tears running down my face this afternoon. It is a four week study which I actually finished pretty much on time. It is also the first study by Beth Moore in which I purchased the weekly videos that are not required. They are $10.00 a piece so I spent Fifty Dollars on the videos, plus the cost of the manual, but gosh, I am so glad I gave them a try this time. Her last video especially concluded the study of Philippians so powerfully and tenderly.

Philippians is only four chapters (and I hand copied the whole book!) but what a balm for a tender heart. Beth taught that many theologians say the theme of Philippians is rejoicing. (My study bible did point this out)! I was also so impressed to see how Paul spent so much time in his mind--after all he was in prison--but he rejoiced--an active verb!

Beth always leaves me feeling like I have been taught by a fellow sister, in Christ. I want to know Christ and this study left me feeling full of love for Him. Highly Recommend.

I cannot recommend this study highly enough. It is dense and deep. It took me 5 months to do this 4 week study, but that was just a reflection of how crammed my data are. Each day’s study takes an hour to an hour and a half, so it was difficult for me to get get more than a couple of days done each week. But every time I sat down with it and finished a day’s study, I felt full. At the same time, it made me even more hungry to know Christ intimately. The joy of the Lord that Beth and Melissa both have shines through.

Beth and Melissa did a great job with this study. I’ve completed dozens of Beth’s studies. This one was awesome. It was a pleasure to facilitate and I so enjoyed women from all walks of faith have “a-ha” moments throughout. I’ll remember the Philippians nuggets for along time. Thank you Beth! Can’t wait for the next one.

Another great study be Beth and Melissa. My only complaint is she does use big words sometimes that I have to stop and lookup which breaks up the flow of the study, just wish she would keep it simpler.

Beth was way over my head. Bible study group said same. Her DVD was good& she is a talented speaker, but manual was hard. This was probably the 3rd book of Bible study.

I love the way Beth and Melissa connect the dots between Philippians and Acts and Paul's different letters. This study got me thinking about some familiar words in new ways.
