Charleston Pirates #5

Loving the Linebacker

Rate this book
Muscular, tattooed, and bearded, Ace Carney is intimidating as hell and my opposite in every way.

With his piercing gray eyes and gruff demeanor, he reminds me of the wolf shifters from my favorite romance novels.

Unfortunately, this is real life, not fiction. There’s no way one of the NFL’s top linebackers would fall for a klutzy future aerospace engineer—I’m not that lucky.

With graduation only months away, my focus should be on maintaining my grades. Yet, the moments Ace and I spend together prove that below his grumpy exterior lies the heart of a gentle giant.

We’re at different points in our lives. He’s approaching the end of his career and mine’s about to begin.

I shouldn’t let myself fall in love with the linebacker. But falling never felt so good.

No one writes sports romances better than Jacob Chance. This is the fifth book in his Charleston Pirates series and it may be one of my favorites.

Ace and Mariko have many things stacked against them, but the 13 year age gap seems to be the biggest one. But Jacob has written such a beautiful story with these two, watching their emotional connection grow is going to have you so addicted you aren’t going to be able to put this one down.

This series is filled with different couples with their own HEAs so you can start with this one, but I promise you will love the experience if you read them all!!

Let’s just say Mariko isn’t the only one who is going to be “Loving the Linebacker!”

I loved the character development in this story. Though we have met Ace and Mariko, Chance really allowed us to truly get to know them. The story does have a slow start because you’re getting to know both individually and then finally we start to see them come together! This really allows their relationship to bloom into what it become and really helps them when it’s needed!

I loved how honest and upfront Mariko is. She is 100% herself and that’s what draws Ace in! Ace is a giant of a man, with an intimidating scowl but the most loving heart! These two definitely have my heart and made for a very enjoyable read!

Jacob Chance always delivers such a sensational story. You really come away feeling awesome. That’s what you will get with Ace and Mariko’s book. I loved everything about it. The storyline developed perfectly, you really feel everything along with these characters.

Together Ace and Mariko are easily one of my favorite couples. Even with the age difference between them, they get along so beautifully.

I really can’t say enough about this story and couple. It really blows me away every time I finish a book by Jacob Chance. They just keep getting better and better.

This book is definitely a must read as well as the rest of the series!!

At first glance Ace and Mariko couldn’t be more different between the 13 year age difference and the fact that they are at different places in their lives as she is ready to begin her career as an aerospace engineer while he has a time limit on his career as a professional football player.

Their connection to each other goes far beyond the physical as they relate to each other in all aspects of their lives as they take us on a romantic, humorous and emotional ride which will have you invested in their story and their relationship with each other that you won’t be able to put down.

This story was a slow build to a beautiful fire. Ace and Mariko know each other since he's the best friend of her sister's man but they don't really KNOW each other. This book invites us in on their build to burn relationship and it's lovely. I loved how genuine and real they seemed, like actual people you'd enjoy hanging with. And I love "big" Delaney, Knox and the other teammates. I also really enjoyed the insight into the very real and scary consequences of playing the game so many love.

Awesome quick read!

This book was SO good. I loved how Ace & Mariko's relationship started, developed and where it lead them.

This book is an age gap, but I never felt their age difference. Mariko is wise beyond her years, and you couldn't help but love Ace, regardless of his age.

Jacob is known for hysterical one liners, and he did not disappoint in this book. What surprised me was all of the history that he incorporated in this book. Job well done.

I also loved seeing old characters from so many different books. It's always a good time when those guys are together.

When I say I didn’t want this book to end I really didn’t want this book to end. This series just keeps getting better and better and Ace and Mariko’s story was nothing short of perfect!

I absolutely adore Jacob’s books. His writing has everything I adore in a romance book and all you’re left with is a big smile and a heart full of the feels by the time you’re done. Ace and Mariko’s book felt like all that and more. It felt deeper and emotional…relatable in many ways. I loved everything about their journey together.

It was full of love, fun, laughter, amazing side characters and a perfect story! This was an absolute amazing addition to this series. I highly recommend it along with the others.

I couldn't put it down!!!!! This is an age gap sports romance and let me tell you it was GOOD. Jacob Chase did an amazing job writing this book especially with the characters and their relationships. I loved how they went from strangers to friends to lovers. It wasn't rushed at all, Jacob wrote them in a way that gave them time to get to know each other and build a deeper connection.

The side characters were also amazing. Everyone was written in such a way that makes u love every single character and has u praying they get their own book.

There's a lot of funny moments as well as sweet ones. Ace and Mariko are polar opposites but are perfect for each other

The Linebacker and the Book Nerd

He's in the twilight of his career, a linebacker with the Charleston Pirates. She is a book nerd, studying for her dream career as an aerospace engineer. With a thirteen-year age gap they shouldn't work ... but this is a Jacob Chance novel, so of course they do. LOVING THE LINEBACKER is another beautifully written story from Jacob, with endearing characters, a relationship that develops and evolves naturally, and a storyline with many laughs and a few tears.

Mariko and Ace are perfect together. It's strange, but I never felt the age gap was a factor in their friendship, yes Ace did question himself sometimes, but other than that it didn't exist. I loved that they naturally gravitated toward each other, nothing between them appeared to be forced or calculated. I enjoyed the special moments they shared together, whether it was sitting on the deck or visiting a bookstore (Ace deserved points for that one). Ace was a gentle giant, protective yet huggable, while Mariko was adorable and quirky, a woman with a heart of gold. Don't get me started on Albert ... yeah, I want an Albert in my life too. While it's not all a bed of roses for Mariko and Ace, Jacob had to include some drama to make our alpha male come to his senses when he begins to have second thoughts ... boy did he save himself with an awesome grand gesture!!

Jacob Chance is one of my favourite, go-to authors. He knows how to touch the hearts and emotions of his readers, making them laugh and cry, something he definitely did with this latest story. Mariko and Ace have become my new favourite couple from the Charleston Pirates series, but if I know Jacob, he will more than likely change that.

LOVING THE LINEBACKER is a fun, quirky, witty, enjoyable read. Another terrific addition to this series.

Sacking the doubters!

Ace Carney is a linebacker for the Pirates Football team and at 35 he's not sure how long he has left to play. When he meets Mariko Delaney, he finds himself drawn to her but at 13 years older than her, he thinks the age gap is too big. Mariko finds herself fascinated by Ace and her attraction to him grows as they spend time together. Can they both find a way to see past the differences and just see each other? When Ace gets hurt, will they come together or will the hurt crush them?
This was another great read from Jacob. I loved that Ace owned an animal shelter and that Mariko loves to volunteer there. The chemistry between them was beautiful as was the love they have! I can't wait for the next book!

*rounded up from 3.5*

A football story complete with Instalove. The football player even started and runs an animal shelter! The storyline seemed like it was going okay, and then once they kissed it went from 0 to 180. And then not long after that they had the drama. I felt like I had a little whiplash because it felt like it happened so quickly! Overall a good story.

Mariko is in college, studying to be an aerospace engineer. Math + books? Nothing could make her happier. Until she goes to dinner with her sister and her neighbor. Her neighbor is the kicker for the local football team and just happened to have a friend over. This friend is a mountain of a man with a big gruff beard, and tattoos all over. And he the linebacker for said team. She feels an instant attraction, but there’s no way he would, right?

Jacob Chance and sports romance really are the dream team. I just love this football series. Loving The Linebacker captures everything that makes this series so addictive and charming. The fun antics, the magnetic romantic chemistry, and the delicious heat paired with real emotions, swoony moments, and unforgettably lovable characters. I loved every minute of this age-gap, opposites attract romance between Ace and Mariko.

These two. I loved both of these characters, and as a couple—they couldn’t be more perfect. While they might seem like total opposites, they actually have so much in common, I just adored how this love relationship developed, how they peeled the vulnerable layers off of each other, and falling in love in the process. That turned into a beautiful relationship, with a bit of light drama, mind-blowing chemistry and a whole lot of feels.

As always, we have a vast array of enriching secondary characters and familiar faces, who all add to this butterfly inducing, swoony romance with just the right bite of heartache and angst. Jacob Chance never disappoints, and Loving The Linebacker is among my most loved of this series. I love this world!

Mariko (22) and Ace's (35) story was another enjoyable addition to the series, yet is easily followed as a standalone. Told in DUAL POV's, with a good mix of LOL moments, their relationship developed gradually, and the storyline also touched on a serious side to a sports condition, without giving too much away, it's another well written, with great attention to detail story that I got fully invested in right from start to finish.

I Loved it!

It's not you it's me

After reading the first 4 books in this series (which I loved), and meeting Ace and Mariko in Coaching the Kicker, I made the mistake of going into this book with a preconceived notion of how it would play out. I think that's where I went wrong. Though it was written well, it just didn't fit my reading mood.
Unlike the first 4 books where the MMC's were overly confident, Ace was a little insecure and quite sensitive. The MFC, Mariko was actually the one who made the first move .
The angst in the book was basically Ace sifting through his emotions to figure out what the future holds for him.
This book had a lot more sweet, where the first four books were heavier on the spice. Again, there's nothing wrong with a sweet story that has a stronger heroine, and Jacob Chance is a great story teller. It just wasn't what I was expecting.

Yet another fab edition to this series but could also be read as a standalone if you wanted to jump straight into this.
Ive loved each and every one of these couples but this one did hit me in all the feels with everything that Ace is going through.
I loved how this was quite a slow burn, loved seeing how their friendship started and their journey together began.
Despite the age gap these pair were meant to be together.
Hard hitting subjects, cultural greatness, laughs, tears and lots of fun this story has it all jammed packed into one book.
Practically read in one go its so good!

What a great combination! A tiny, big hearted, quick witted, beautiful engineer and a tattooed US football player with a huge heart and physique to match. Ace is not to be underestimated. He is clever and thoughtful, having to face upcoming changes and new directions in his life while Mariko is studying hard ro get started on her career in aerospace engineering.
The wit and heart in this book is strong and I loved taking the journey with this delightful pair. Fabulous! 💖💖💖💖

Loving the Linebacker is book five in the Charleston Pirates series...hello Football Romance 😍

Mariko is focused on school and becoming an aerospace engineer. She has a passion for romance novels..but doesn't see herself having that book level romance.

Ace is a football star and he is open to love but just hasn't met the right person..and he's not getting any younger.

Once he meets Mariko he just wants to get to know her. They become friends and end up spending a lot of time together...without either of them realizing they want more until one of them decides to make a move!

If you like:
🏈friends to lovers

I would highly recommend this book! It was such a quick and fantastic read, I couldn't put it down!

I absolutely love this linebacker! (pun intended) Was so excited to read this story about Ace and Mariko after starting to get to know them in Coaching the kicker. Ace was already one I thought had a great personality. I’ve always loved a strong silent type. Throw in some hot tattoos and a beard and I’m there for it! Mariko is so stinking adorable and I relate to her well with being a short person with the love of books. I devoured this story and didn’t want it to end!!

Loved it!

Every time I read a book by Jacob, I know that I will be thoroughly pleased. He always has the most down to earth characters that you immediately fall in love with and this time is no different. Ace and Mariko are so great together. They are full of laughs, fun and good times, but also can be serious when its called for. My only complaint is that the story does not go on forever. Guess I have to be patient for the next one!

“I’m scared of burdening the person I love more than anything in this world. You.”

This story was so cute. I was drawn in from the very beginning. I loved the fact that Mariko was a fellow book worm. Also loved seeing Mariko and Ace go from friends to lovers. And Albert finally got a home🥰 There was some funny scenes in here that had me cracking up. Also some that were heartbreaking. But it was all worth it by the end. That ending was so sweet. I loved every minute of this book. An amazing sports romance. Highly recommended it.
